wish him a safe age Decoration Day Tuesday was observed by the old soldiers in Lancaster both Federal and Confederate They assembled in Masonic Hall and marched to the Court House where Letcher Owsley delivered one of the best and most ap propriate speeches we ever heard Letcher is a born orator and when given a good subject cannot be sur passed by many of the oldest and ex perienced speakers At the conclu sion of the speech the old Vets march ed to the Cemetery where many graves were strewn with freshly cut flowers A Lady Candidate Miss Mary Towles Sasseen who is a candidate for the democratic nomina lion for Superintendent Public was in town Monday in the interest of her race She told THE RECOUD that if elected she would de vote her entire time to the office and instead of spending the time in the olllce at Frankfort would travel ovei the state and visit points where she could be of any assistance in building up the schools She is a lady thorough posted on school laws is well educated and would doubtless give the schools much better attention than they generally receive Mrs S C Pollard formerly of this county died suddenly at her home in Danville Friday morning She was widely connected in Garrard the fam ily being one of the most highly re spected in the county The Danville Advocate says Mrs Pollard up and ate breakfast but fell as she started to another room and died after an hours unconscious ness The deceased who was Mr Pol lards second wife was fortyfour years and a most estimable woman She leaves no children in Funeral services were conducted in the Christian church and the remains interred in the Lancaster Cemetery Saturday afternoon Fine Work As mentioned briefly in last issue MrHenry G Sandifer and his splendid team of the Danville Masonic lodge came over Thursday night and con ferred the third degree in the Lancas lodge While it was generally un derstood they were coming yet the exact date was not determined until very short time both gray and blue showed marked Capt Stone during his stay Lancaster A Great Speech Capt W J Stone candidate for the democratic nomination for governor addressed a crowded house in this city Monday afternoon Capt Stone is a Christian gentleman in every sense of the word and it is a pleasure to be in company He is a man of fine personal appearance notwithstanding is minus a leg which was lost in the Confederate army Capt Stone devoted the first part of his speech to national affairs setting forth the principles of the democratic party and comparing them with those of the opposite side He then came to state affairs and for probably an hour gave views on questions before the peo of Kentucky He said he had been reported as having voted for gold bonds while a member of congressbut produced a copy of the Congressional Record which showed plainly the ut untruthfulness of the charge He a said If any man will show that Icast such a vote I will withdraw from this race and immediately to work years she never before entered the State Tour naments which are held every year Prof Patterson made up his mind some time ago to have the school and last week a number of pupils went to Somerset to take part against those who have had in such matters and show what our school can do The Progressive Home Journal of that city prints a lengthy account of the Tournament from which we take the following ex tractsOn Thursday afternoon No five brought to our little city one of the most interesting assemblage of people that has ever honored us with its pres enceBetween two and three hundred young ladies and gentlemen from the Graded Schools of our Central Ken tucky towns came here to contest for the beautiful medals and the high honor of being best in the various de partments of scholarship music and athletics The bright happy and in telligent faces of the manly boys and beautiful girls made one long to be a child and live over those happy school days again They came for a three days visit and went first to the Opera House where they were assigned to our citizens to be entertained at their homes After dinner which was of course a special order of business the first thing on the program was a ball game between the teams of Som erset and Harrodsburg The final score was 22 to favor of the visit ors On Friday afternoon the game of ball between Lancaster and was played and after a great battle up to the seventh inning Lan caster left the earth and Richmond won an easy victory by a score of 14 to 3 For Lancaster M Denny played a great game and made every score that his team got across the plate Every man in the team from Rich mond did well and each had a promi nent part in winning the victory On Saturday morning immediately ter the contest at the the crowd
