P.ivalry for a woman's hand caused Riley Bethel and a young man named Scrog-giu- s to engage in a duel to the death at Hillside, three miles from here. The encounter took place on the road, near the home of the young woman, who was the unwitting cause of the tragedy. Uethcl and Scroggins had both been paying attention to her for a long while, and were terribly jealou-of one another. They met, both en route to her home. A quarrel was soon on, and they engag-ein a rough, and tumble fight. According to the reports that have reached here, Bethel drew his knife and began cutting Scroggins.
