upon his own request been placed upon the retired list He has been in the service thirty years The wounds received at the famous charge up Hill have caused him much trouble and his physician advised him to retire and enjoy a well earned rest The part he took in the San Juan fight has been highly com plimented by the War Department and the daily press that published of the fight Recruits for the Philippines The Recruiting Officer in Lexington has just received orders to enlist a number of white men for service in the regiments now in the Philippine Islands These men will be sent di rect to San Francisco from Lexington and from there to Manila This will make a fine trip for able bodied men unmarried and not over 35 years of age It will be a chance to see the world and possibly make a buildings on the site of the old house This building will cover the entire lot from the National Bank to Richmond street It will consist of four store rooms running full depth of lots and oflice rooms above The front is to be of Ohio pressed brick with trimmings of cut stone and the entire front of store rooms plate glass There are to be large fire walls each store and the entire build ing constructed in the latest and most uptodate manner The building will cost 10000 and is to be completed by fall The erection of this block will be one of the greatest blessings the town has had There is a demand for more store and oflice rooms and this building will fill a longfelt in Lancaster has been decidely too high and the additional rooms will we sincerely hope bring the prices within
