Although a young man Mr Richardson is well posted on matters and the good people of our neighboring county will never regret it if they send him to Frankfort as their representative Very Gratifying The fact that our citizens stand rea dy to patronize a firstclass entertain ment liberally is well demonstrated by the large sale of seats for the Schu bert Symphony Club and Lady Quar tette There is INDICTED Insurance Companies Are hauled the Charge of Coiisitlrlcy As anticipated the grand jury re turned indictments against nearly all fire insurance companies doing busi ness in Lancaster Only those that are members of the board were includ ed in the batch the entire numberbe ing fourteen The indictment is as long as a wellrope and if put in type would make nearly two columns The sum and substance of the charge is that the companies have unlawfully conspired by persuasion etc to free competition among fire insurance companies and unlawfully creating a pool for the purpose of and fixing rates premiums etc among the fire insurance compa nies doing business in Lancascer The indictments are of the same character of those found in other parts of the stateThe companies claim that in order to fix their rates in an equitable man ner it is absolutely necessary to have these boards in each town in order that all companies can know the exact na ture of all risks they are asked to take The business men drew up and sign ed a petition to Commonwealths At torney Sam Owsley stating that as they paid the premiums they desired to be heard on the matter but the in dictments were returned just the sameIn another county where similar indictments were found the companies were tried and convicted but the mat ter has been taken to the court of and Mr Owsley tells us the cases here will not get to trial before the higher court passes upon the matter Ofcourse decision in those cases will cover the ones here and if the higher court reverses them it will knock these indicemens into a cocked hat Circuit Court Much civil business has been ed of in court this week and a number of little Commonwealths cases none of which were of importanca to the general public The case against Houston Clark charged with shooting at Henry Barlow was set for trial on Wednesday but was continued until next court on account of the absence of an important witness Owing to the bad feeling existing between the parties Judge Warren deemed it ad visable to take steps to prevent trouble during the trial and ordered the Sheriff search every man be allowed to enter the Court room Sanders distribution of the assets of such associations in the hands of an in proportion to the amounts paid by them respectively in their stock The decision was handed down in the case of J K Sumrall and others against the Commercial Building Trusts assignee and others appealed from the Jefferson Common Pleas Court and is an affirmance of the opinion of Judge Emmet Field of that court The action grew out of the as signment in June 1897 of the Com mercial Building Trust to the Colum bia Finance and Trust Company of Louisville and the question was in a suit brought for a of the estate and the lower his own denomina iton can enter the pearly gates A great many are members of particular denominations for the same reason they are democrats or republicans Cause Pa was one and that is the only reason they can give But there are cranks however vIio firmly believe that only members of their particular church are to pick harps on the other shore Such people have about a much genuine religion as can fiture events to present anything new under the sun in Lancaster would be a task as difli cult as finding a needle in a hay stack but I have a right under all stances to tell the like Unde George Washington I do it and desire to state a few impressions that have been formulated in tliQ last few days while in Lancaster on busl ness pertaining to secret orders and if I tlwny a few bouquets I hope the recipients will keep them watered by memory and remember that these flowers of truth cost hem nothing There are as many gentleman Q the square inch in Lancaster I have been hanging around in ma ny a day I had not been here an hour before I had three invitations to Go home with me and I dont think I received the invitations thro sympathy as I have gained 25 pounds in four months and hardly look aslank and lean as HonRevProfJudge tallow Dawson Hughes but in the spirit of hospitality that pervades the air in Lancaster The young they will make even the gray hairs of an old man change to the original They are out of sight to use one of the signs at my command and though like Adlai Stevenson says of William Jennings Bryan we have UeanJ of then in tlie past anil vt of thom tgain J am constrained to use the language of trio Queen of Shoba when visiting Solomon and say the half has never yet been told I have not seen a single young lady in Lan caster who has not had at least 25 of marriage Good looks and pro posals go hand and I will Iwo no trouble in sustaining the assertion in regard to the number of to many It is a splendid idea to look before you leap My wife will tell jou newspaper but he has settled down to the important and commendable business of raising a large and interesting family and tells me he has three to start on Mav he live long and prosper Bro Ed Bishop as Chancellor commander Bro Joe Haselden as of records and seal tile Knights of Pythias lodge is moving along The degrees are conferred in a faultless manner and in the work each participant is a warm baby if you will permit a little slang Bro Jim Dillon performs beautifully in the lodge room and as Master at Arms Bro Jake Joseph is a bright particu lar star while Bro Louis Landram puts on the finishing touches by music On the organ Quite a num ocr have been added to the this week One told me he thought the members that joined this rank had to have a uni form but a wooden overcoat is what consists of and when the member dons it his is paid from GOO to 1000 The members the Order all over the world are tak ing great interest in the Endowment Rank of the Knights of Pythias that the brightest jewels it garners are the tears of widows and orphans that its imperative com mands are to assuage the sufferings of a brother bury the dead care for the widow and educate the orphan to charity towards offenders to construe words and deeds in their least unfavorable light granting lion only of purpose and good intentions to others its laws are reason and equity its cardinal doctrines inspire purity pf thought and life and love of truth its intention is peace on earth and to all mankind These are the principles of the Order of Knights of Pythias briefly stated for the benefit of those who think that fun and frolic and getting straddle of the traditional billy goat is all goes on in the lodge room I noticed at a prayer meeting the other night that brotherly love exists between the various denominations In talks before the audience during the evening each had kind sympathy for the other and that is what I call religion The of the various Lancaster are not as old as Mathuselah in fact three of them Revs JIassey Powell Clark are quite young in years but old in knowlegc of Him who died that we might live and like Bro McKee they tell the old old story in a quite entertaining as well as in structive There are some splendid singers here and the worship of God in is an interesting part of the serv ices The fact seems to be generally known that Bro Jim Crov Dillon is worth a heap to any town He works well in any kind of traces and the people tell what he pleases The Graded School here is an honor to the city and the school facilities of Lancaster are equalled in but few towns The teachers know their and act well their part there all the honor lies I was particularly struck with the kindergarten presided over by Miss Margaret Murphy She is George aint in this time If I know kicking when I hear it I hereby proclaim the fact that some loud long and high kicking is on in Lancaster as to the probability of the insurance naming to fold their line picture of Capt AV C McFarland formerly of this city has many friends here anti some of the company are remembered by many Lancaster people we reproduce a part of the article which is as follows We had passed El Pozo about a mile when we first came under the Spanish tire and from this point to theSan Juan River our way led through a dense jungle When about six hundred yards from this stream our regiment tiled to the right and funned in line of battle Although the enemys bullets could be heard clipping through the bushes of whizzing over our heads and occasion ally striking a man we could not sec the Spaniards nor did we their position Anyhow we pushed forward each company separately breaking its way through the heavy underbrush and wading the river along the further bank of which our line was reformed in a sunken road which ran nearh parallel to the San Juan Hill time crest of which lined by the enemys earth works was five or six hundred yards away As soon as we began to appeal along this road the Spanish lire of artillery and smallarms which hac been going on as we advanced became now very much more severe and accur ate In this slightly sunken road we threw ourselves tint on the ground ti ourselves as well as was for we were not permitted to the fire of the Spaniards whost straw hats we could see bobbing up here and there along the line of theirearth worksaway off on the crest of the hill In this position we remained fo probably a halfhour until it began to look as if there were no orders for us to do anything either to move forward or to retreat After we had been in this position a few minutes either by reason of some misunderstanding of orders which were construed to mean a re treat across the river or a false alarm of some kind just to the right of our company a number of men started to break to the rear Owing to thequick foresight and prompt action of Captain McFarland who rushed in between the men and the river and assured them that there was no order to retreat and that every thing was all right that we were going forward to take the hill what bid fair to be a stampede was prevented Our entire regiment quickly ran to the and soon clipped the tangled maze of wire and broke across the field at full speed Leading the front of rush up on the enemy Captain W C McFar land at the head of his company E reached a position well in front of the remainder of the line With our bodies bent forward as close to the ground as posible few stopped to shoot although subjected to a deadly fire from the enemy who from their protec ted position emptied their magazines into us We made quick time to reach the foot of the hill where we would bo out of their range Most of the men who fell were shot between the road way and the foot of the ridge When we reached this safe point we did not stop even to catch orr breath but swept on up the hill following the gallant Captain McFar land who seemed determined to be the first man of all in the Spanish tren ches It was hot work under that July sun to make this march I protect possible return arise fence this swift long and r X r t she know then after this rush of several hundred yards to climb time steep sides of the San Juan hut it did not take us long to reach the brow or crest where we were within thirty or forty paces of the Spanish line The enemy seeing our head appear from below the hill broke and lied from their trenches and practically ceased Our own batteries from their station fully a mile in the rear did not seem to realize that the American troops were now so near the Spanish breastworks forjust as we wet o chasing them out of the trenches McPurkmd who had led the charge and pistol in hand was in the act of firing at the retreating enemy was struck down by a piece of shrapnel from one of our own guns which exploded immediately over our heads As soon as the peared in the distance we fathered around our fallen captain and had him carried to the field hospital where fortunately for all it was found that his wound was not mortal tare had gone into the fight with o men and had 11 killed and wounded our ratio of loss being near 30 per cent Jotter A WYETH you a cough ones before During the past few years when hors es were so cheap the people seemed to lose interest in the matter and very few good ones were raised There was a better demand for geldings than for stallions and nearly all the tiptop stallions were altered This lam is the principal reason for the scarcity of toppy horses now I know a man who recently looked all over this section of the state to buy a first class highly bred stallion and he to find one for sale I look for much breeding this season but it will be to only lirstjclass animals The plug horse is a thing of the past now and is not Etc We the American people inaugura ted a war in 1898 against Spain for the sole purpose of liberating Cuba from Spanish tyranny that we did iu a few short months with compara lively little expense and bloodshed In order to accomplish the desired end our navy under Rear Admiral Dewey under proper orders of course entered Manila harbor and destrdyed the Spanish fleet there stationed yliich wjs a good job well executed The destruction of that jleet was all that could be done there toward ac complishing the main object the of Cuba We did not propose to liberate the Filipinos from Spanish despotic was not part of the had no interest in that people and they none in us In that state of case our duty as a liberty people was to get out and away from there and lei that people work their own salvation with the nations of the world who by profin ity association and similarity in races habits and modes of life did have sums Interest in them and sympathy with them We made a mistake when we stayed there and undertook to set up a government over that without and con trary to their wishes We made an other bad mistake when we agreed to pay Spain twenty million dollars her right ill the Philippine islands We mado another mistake when we agreed to see the Spanish army safe out of and from the islands and into Spain But these mistakes have been made and the only question left to solve is how are to get out of the muddle pay Spain the 20000000 get the Spanish army out as best we can buy them from the Filipinos or any other way without fighting and then with draw our army and navy and come home It occurs to nie that the idea of Who will hafi down the flag is a mere catchpenny too feeble and weak to catch an intelligent people That we can conquor the Filipinos can doubt that we can whip them in battle on land and on sea is a demonstrated fact that we are not afraid of them is too plain to admit of a doubt that we are not afraid of any other nation interfering with us in our movements to subjugate those people Is i settled proposition Then why not haul down the flag 3STo one can say we did it through fear or cowardice and most certainly we can not make by fighting and conquering an half dressed in clouts and armed with bows and arrows We dont need the islands for any either their markets or their products Then why not haul down the and come home and save the lives of our poor soldiers from a miserable short life in the jungles and a horri ble death from burning sun and dot ble dyed malaria Haul down the flag and let that ignorant deople be free according to
