securing an other line of rail road are very bright Since last report the Southern purchased the Air Line which from Louisville to St Louis and West This gives them several miles of road on the other side the Ohio river Now with Southern lines running from Middles boro on to the sea board it is reasonable to infer that a road between these two points desirable The Southern already the Louisville Southern which from Louisville to Burgin The dis Burgin to Middlesboro ninetyseven miles and the route would take the road through counties offering the richest coal and timber lands in the state Thousands acres of the finest virgin forests would be opened up in addition to the South ern completing a trunk line from the south to St Louis The building of this road would be the best thing that could possibley be done for Gar rard This being the the closest town to the coal and raw timber we could by putting in a system of waterworks be prepared to offer most inducements to manufactures As to the advantage to be derived from having lines for freight its no use to waste time speak ins If the line is built it will more than likely go by the survey made several years ago for the Louisville Southern and pass through Bryantsville Camp Nelson Lancaster and on out to the Rockcastle line We do not see why there should be any trouble whatever in securing the right of way as every man can readily see the tenthousand ways in which the county and town will be benefitted It seems to us that the thing to do is every fellow to put his shoulder to the wheel and lets give a united pull to get the road If one will stop ad think a moment he will come to the natural conclusion that unless we do take advantage of this golden opportunity we had as well fold our hands and become reconciled to be behind the times henceforth and forever It will not increase taxation whatever dont let anyone crowd that idea into your head The law now prohibits the voting of a tax to help railroads All we will have to do is to secure the right of way and this we firmly believe can be done as the road runs over the lands of men who are for progress and besides can see thegreat to be derived frog the road Ifo mans land can possibly be damaged as much as benifited by the road pass ing through it and every landowner can more than afford to donate the right ofway It should be remembered that under our new constitution not one dollar can be appropriated toward railroads and no one need fear that there will ever be a vote to issue bonds for any such purpose We are Inform ed that the road will be a CERTAINTY if owners of land through which it passes will give the right of way But the railroad company cannot pay thousands of dollars for rgihts of way and then spend the estimated two million for construction of the road A later report says Samuel Spencer has made a proposition to lease the Cincinnati Southern railroad from the city of Cincinnati to be run in with the Southern railway He offers to give 1000000 year and 4 percent on gross earning above 4500000 which goes to prove that the Southern is anxious for an outlet to the south Now is the time to strike and go after the road to get it It is gratifying to see the interest people in other counties are taking in the matter Mercer guarantees the right of way as has also three other counties on the other side of us The main thing to be done is getting the right of way here in Garrard and while there is a possibility of some slight opposition yet we hardly think it probable We cannot see how any man with a thimbleful of increase the army to the new limit and and I received a telegram Friday or Saturday asking what was the best plan to hurry recruits into the army to fill out the regiment and I judge that every recruiting officer in the country ed a similar telegram All the officers are keeping their clerks busy enrolling recruits and it seems that no difficulty will be in filling out the army And by the way Kentucky will be well represented if there is any more fighting at Manila I enlisted about 200 men from theSecond Kentucky the Twentysecond infantry and I see that regiment has reached the Phil ippines m Mr Pllcfaer Here Mr Thos Pilcher of Nicholasville wos in town Saturday and being an old newspaper man came up to watch the boys stick type and talk shop with us He established the Nicholasville Democrat many years ago and did effective work through its columns for the advancement of his partys interests Having been in a newspaper office since early boyhood he has naturally acquired much of men and matters He is a canidate for Rail Road Commissioner for this district and while in our city met with much encouragement Mr Pilcher is the first candidate Jessa mine has offered for a state office That county being a next door has always stood up for anyone Garrard ever offered and in several conventions put in timely licks for Garrard entries Mr Pilcher is not tied
