county charging them with conspiracy The companies indicted number about thirty and if each should be fined 500 as like companies were in Scott oun ty this will aggregate a considerable sum 15000 The insurance men are loud in their protests against this and claim that it will work great harm to the people as insurance policies protect many loans and if these are withdrawn the loans will have to be called in Pushing the Work Contractor Ryan is not permitting grass to grow under his feet and is pushing work on the hotel About forty men wield picks and shovels from sunup to dark while at least twentyfive twohorse wagons haul away the dirt and debris In a few days the foundations will have been dug and the large stones will be put in position to receive the brick walls Mr Ryan keeps as many hands at work as can conveniently move about the lot He is kept pretty busy as he has a big job on his hands and a and one matters to look after It is interesting to see the rapidity with which the work proceeds Mrs Kitty Leavell whose death was announced in last issue of THE RECORD was born in Madison in the year 1814 She was the daugh ter of Hon Jacob Huguely and was married to Squire T LcaveU Eight children blessed the union of whom two survive her Mrs Jesse Walden and S T Leavell both of this city In early life she united with the church and her life was spent in practicing the teachings of the Bible Her kind words of advice cheer and comfort will always be remembered by those seeking her counsel As a neighbor she was always ready to share with those about her and to strive to make their lives happy and cheerful She always had a kind word for everyone and ever ready to assist anyone in need In her death the church loses a zealous member and the community a noble Christian woman Alarge congregation assembled in the Chris tian church to pay the last tribute of respect Aypropriate services were conducted by Elds Jesse and W P Walden and R M Campbell after which the remains were interred in the Lancaster Cemetery The SmallPox Scare Mr Ed Walton of Stanford was here Mouday and told TIlE RECORD that Sowders the victim in that city was doing as well as could be expect ed and would recover He has been kept continually in the pest house and no one allowed to go near Mr Wal ton said there were no new cases in or near Stanford and no one feared a breaking out of the disease As iff the reports of its prevalence in county he said there was a scare about Deep Well woods but investi gation of a number of the reported ca ses showed them to be chickenpox As extreme precautionary steps have been taken there is absolutely no dan ger in visiting our neigboring town The thing to do is to watch out for strangers coming here especially ne groes The disease is holding full sway in Cincinnati and Louisville and there are many more cases in these cities than the newspapers re portOur citizens should be exceedingly watchful in this matter One case of smallpox no matter how mild or how quickly it is gotten out of town would completely paralyze business and kill the spring trade as dead as a door nail The thing to do is every fellow keep his eye skinned and harness up the first person who looks like he even dreamed of having smallpox in time saves making an entire cloth ing store Egg Famine The scarcity of eggs has become se rious The fruit can scarcely be procured at any price Some say the hens have formed a trust and are waiting to get their own figures A report says H D Miller of Ohio went to Pittsburg and quietly started in to buy eggs In a few days he had secur ed 1000 cases or 30000 dozen and now has the market cornered Before to Pittsburg Miller went out the poultry and found that the hens had been frostbitten during the blizzard As it to extend its line from Burgin to Middlesboro thus giving this great system a direct line of its own from Louisville to the south and the sea board The Southern now owns the old Louisville Southern from Louisville to Burgin A survey was made several years ago which runs the line through Garrard Eockcastle Jackson Clay Leslie Harlan and into Bell Information from reliable sources shows the Southern would like to have a line of this kind and those in position to know what they are talking about say the road will be built if the right of way is GIVEN The Mercer county people are very and will donate the right of way through Mercer The Lancaster Commercial Club has gone to work to get the right of way through Garrard and parties in position to know say the remaining countses will Stanford Opera House Friday night but owing to the small pox scare it was decided to cancel the engagement Mr Walton owner of the Stanford opera house telephoned here and arrangements were made to have the company appear in Lancas ter tomorrow Friday night the to be divided with the Lancas ter band The troupe will appear in the Court House and arrangements have been made whereby the show can be given as well here as in a regular opera house The troupe consists of twelve people and carries a brass band and full orch estra The company is now playing return engagements in Kentucky which goes to
