earnest pushing young minister Henry N Faulcorier has succeeded in establishing in what we firmly believe will be the greatest blessing the town has Had He went to the young men of the town and laid before them the many social healthful and best of all spiritual advantages to bs derived from the Young Mens Christian As sociation Those talked to grasped tie idea and as a result thirty young met in the Masonic Hall Friday night to perfect the organization G Brjght Swinebroad was selected tem porary chairman and Louis Landram temporary secretary Rev Faulconer again stated the plan and the were unanimously chosen as permanent officers Henry Faulconer president Kenneth Postel vicepresi dent John E Stormes secretary and W H Kinnaird treasurer A was appointed to arrange for place of next meeting several enthusi astic addresses were made and the meeting adjourned prayer by Prof Postel These organizations have been put on foot at other towns but a have fallen through To keep the interest up and hold the together it is the intention of the young men to erect a building Now this sounds like most too big an but it will be done Dr Kin naird offered to donate the lot where his office now stands and five hundred dollars in cash His only consider tion is that he be allowed an office in the building A young gentleman can do so and never miss the money says he will give one thousand dollars We know another party who will give five hundred dollars Now this has come unsolicited When aid is asked it is safe to say enough will be subscrib cd to put up one of the best buildings in the state It is the intention to have a library large reading and lecture room and bath rooms A janitor will be regulaaly employed to look the house The young men have absolutely no place to go at night or Sunday and in ninetynine out of one hundred cases they get into bad habits by loafing in places which far from being Sunday Schools or Prayer Meetings The library will be kept supplied vith choice literature the gymnasium and bath rooms open at all times and any young man be perfectly free to use them services will be held every Sunday afternoon and every member will have a chance to take part It will be the stepping stone to going to work in ones church The average young man while he feels that some day he will settle and take an in church matters yet he shrinks from the idea of appearing in public One of the chief objects of this order will be to ease up to the point where a young fellow will be qualified and most of all willing to take part in church affairs So far about fifty have signified their intention to go into the and we never saw anything start out with more favorable prospects We want to say here that this is not only for the town folks but any young man in the county is to come and they are wanted Another thing Some may think they are too worldly to go into this Dispel that idea young object is to get hold of worldly men purifythem first so cially and bodily then work on him spiritually To put it in other words If you want to get straightened to live an honorable upright life this the channel to enter to get up to that point The first meeting will be Sabbath afternoon at 3 p m in the Odd hall Prof Postle will be leader Benefits Religious Intellectual So cial and Physical We want to meet with the club organized by Dr McKee for our would take a low place in the hierar chy of professions Those professions which deal with the ends which alone make life worth preserving such as that of the law of religion phyloso phy and of fine arts would in such a case regard our occupation but as a higher kind of farriery The glory of our profession from the hour when Hippocrates in that wherewith like a trumpet the notes of which re verberate still through the ages sum us to take our place in the fore front of the tight has been that we are concerned not only for mankind but for ideal side of a physicians life is he brings healing or solace to his man fellow The Greek philosopher like the modern socialist would man to state the priest would sacrifice man to the church the evolutionist would sacrifice man to the race Yet while all these ele ments of cooperation and of aspira tion work together for good we see that after all the tendency of civil evolution as of Christian is to use society as a means himself as a means to purify and to elevate the individual soul The physician then is more than a he is the not only of humanity at large but of man Thus it is that the humblest of us and lie who labors in the darkest and most thankless parts of our cities and towns is more a drudge in the sight of the angels he is illustrious by the light of his service to men and wo men T he man of science can tell us things about buds flowersand wild life for all life is various and touching he can tell us queer and un comfortable things about our inside amazingly useful things about steam and electricity but at bottom when the moral is over or the material won all this grows stale Ideas concerning the harmony of thespheres concerning comic evolution concern ing the inhabitants of Mars are they may uplift us sometimes with a sense of the greatness of inheritance but alone they are cold and unsatisfactory The child of his age feels that a sonnet of Wardsworth a flash of Brownings lamp into mans heart an Idyll of Tennyson gives us thoughts worth more than all the bill Ions of whirling stones in the universe In strengthening and cherishing life of his brother or sister hap ily the physician alone among them all holds sacred the lamp of its per sonal life for its own individual sake lie alone forgets church state nay the human raceitself in his tender care for the suffering man and for suffering Temperance Union held a public in time Masonic Hall Thursday afternoon from two to four oclock The occasion was in honor of Mrs W A Yantis of Paragould Ark who WitS visiting in this city Mrs Yantis is a zealous member of the organiza tion and has done nobje work For God Home and Native Land She was a member of the local Union when a resident of Lancaster A large num her of ladies were present at the meeting all delighted at the opportunity of again meeting their old friend and coworker We will take occasion to use here the article prepared for our souvenir edition but was crowded out It is a brief HISTOUY OF LANCASTER UNION The Womans Christian Temperance Union is doubtless more widely known than any othor organization of women in this and possibly in any other country t was organized in 1874 one year after the great temperance Crusade which swept over the land This cru at the time was denounced in bitterest terms by its foes and looked upon with suspicion by friends but time has proven the justice of the cru nOdes cause and methods Desperate diseases demand desperate remedies Time had come to act and the women singing Give to the winds thy fears Hope and be undismayed went forth from their own bright tire sides to face scathing criticism and bitter abuse yet knew not themselves how great was the tower to be erected on the foundations which they were to lay For the Crusade could not last always and out of it grew its Sober second thought the C T U which although an organization of less than twentylive years existence numbers its membciS by hundreds of thousands and carries on forty of work along moral and social lines But not content with home work alone Round the world missiona rics were sent by our National organ izations to every continent on the globe and to the islands of the seas to educate and organize A worlds W C T U was the result and now many other countries mire bound to our own by white ribbon bands which loin indeed belted time globe A delegate from California at the recent St Paul Convention illustrated the aggressive spirit of this organiza tion when she urged that her own state be the next meeting place of the Convention and added aa a pleasant ry that as unions would soon be or ganized in Cuba Porto Rico and the Phillipines California would be the center of the nation and of national temperance work and therefore the proper place to hold the Convention The death of Florence E TVillard for nineteen years president of the National was the severest blow the organization has ever had to meet It is needless to eulogize in this short sketch a woman for whose death the Hags at our national capital were hung at half mast Her loss is inestimable but her work will go on Mrs L M N Stevens the newly elected dent is a woman of most noble quali ties and will doubtless win the dcvo the followers whose banner she holds aloft and inspire in them fresh courage and zeal in 1SS5 Mrs Lucy A Neild in Lancaster time first union of settlement and though not empower ed with the privileges of the ballot it is doubtless largely due to the labors of these Christian women that the open saloon is no longer a menace to time boys of ourtown Five presidents have stood at the head during its existence Mrs Fowle Mrs Yancey Mrs Sweeney and Mrs Gill The present are Mrs Gill president Mrs Farm Rec Secretary Mrs Royston Cor Sccy Mrs
