Temperance Union held a public in time Masonic Hall Thursday afternoon from two to four oclock The occasion was in honor of Mrs W A Yantis of Paragould Ark who WitS visiting in this city Mrs Yantis is a zealous member of the organiza tion and has done nobje work For God Home and Native Land She was a member of the local Union when a resident of Lancaster A large num her of ladies were present at the meeting all delighted at the opportunity of again meeting their old friend and coworker We will take occasion to use here the article prepared for our souvenir edition but was crowded out It is a brief HISTOUY OF LANCASTER UNION The Womans Christian Temperance Union is doubtless more widely known than any othor organization of women in this and possibly in any other country t was organized in 1874 one year after the great temperance Crusade which swept over the land This cru at the time was denounced in bitterest terms by its foes and looked upon with suspicion by friends but time has proven the justice of the cru nOdes cause and methods Desperate diseases demand desperate remedies Time had come to act and the women singing Give to the winds thy fears Hope and be undismayed went forth from their own bright tire sides to face scathing criticism and bitter abuse yet knew not themselves how great was the tower to be erected on the foundations which they were to lay For the Crusade could not last always and out of it grew its Sober second thought the C T U which although an organization of less than twentylive years existence numbers its membciS by hundreds of thousands and carries on forty of work along moral and social lines But not content with home work alone Round the world missiona rics were sent by our National organ izations to every continent on the globe and to the islands of the seas to educate and organize A worlds W C T U was the result and now many other countries mire bound to our own by white ribbon bands which loin indeed belted time globe A delegate from California at the recent St Paul Convention illustrated the aggressive spirit of this organiza tion when she urged that her own state be the next meeting place of the Convention and added aa a pleasant ry that as unions would soon be or ganized in Cuba Porto Rico and the Phillipines California would be the center of the nation and of national temperance work and therefore the proper place to hold the Convention The death of Florence E TVillard for nineteen years president of the National was the severest blow the organization has ever had to meet It is needless to eulogize in this short sketch a woman for whose death the Hags at our national capital were hung at half mast Her loss is inestimable but her work will go on Mrs L M N Stevens the newly elected dent is a woman
