your last issue seeks to expose my scheme for destroying the English Sparrow and deals with it as if it were a trivial affair The destruction of that bird is more desired by the far mers of the country than anything else and to then the question more momentous than the annexation of the Philippines the tariff issue or the question of a silver dollar being made a standard dollar at the ratio of 16 to 1 The farmers will never vote for to a man who seeks to destoy the effect of my invention I believe X Y Z is allowed the title of Captain for services in the war between the North and the South I believe that he is a lawyer a politician and the o witii ism and sarcasm I think tiit he is the man said that he saw several that would weigh 90 pounds and that the musquitocs were so large in a certain locality that a great many of them would weigh a pound These statements are tu but misleading Of course sev eral h g 903 pounds and a great many mmquitoes will weigh a pound If I am correct as to the iden tity of X Y must confess that he is my frienJ and that I admire his hermanhood and his talent but his article will dfeat him for any office to which he mi ht as the farmers will Lucinda B Stephens was born in Jessamine county Kentucky on the 25th day of November 1814 Her age therefore at the time of her death was 84 years and one having celebrated with a number of her aged and lifelong friends her 84th just twentyfour hours before she fell asleep in Jesus She was married to William Greenleaf in the year 1830 and shortly afterward removedto this j town where she has lived a con stant source of blessing for years There were only two persons in town older than she and there are not more than one or two who were here when she came They had only gotten fairly started in life when her husband was taken from her and she was left with five little children to battle with life single handed and alone For fortythree long years she has bravely faced the future and grap pled with present duty and died with a spuit sweet and a heart as sunny as a June morning Not far from sixtythree years a she gave herself to Christ and always acknowledged his unreserved master ship over her life and to this fact is to be traced the secret of her great usefulness and blessedness in this com munity the days of her extreme fee bleness she was an angel of mercy in every home where sickness was to be found in all the town One of ou old est citizens who has known her since 1843 says that in this nev er saw her equal During the scourges of cholera swept over the town in and 1873 she bravely stood at her post not afraid to serve her God and humanity in the vary face of dan ger and what seemed to many almost certain death Daring the civil war she ministered to the sick and dying w th unstinted hospitality and even out of her poverty she gave to supply the wants of the hungry footsore and homeside soldier Her house was even turned into a hospital where scores found relief and sympathy in her motherly ministrations Sister Greenleaf was a remarkable woman in many respects This town has not witnessed for many a day the departure of a more really distinguish el and remarkable citizen than she 1 She was remarkable in that she attained to so great an age She had passed her fourscore years and while they were to her years of labor and sorrow they had never dimmed the brightness of her mind or the cheer foulness of her spirits Only by can we take in this long sweep years The events of the year 1814 read like ancient history now The world has moved so rapidly that the space seems almost infinite and yet this life just closed on earth spans this long period Sister was born amid the strife and turmoil our second English war just a month and fourteen days before the battle of New Orleans She lived therefore under the administration of twentytwo of our twentyfive lived during the lifetime ALL of bat Washing ton for Adams and Jefferson did not die until she was a girl of twelve the year 1826 She lived to the population of her beloved grow from eight millions in 1814 all of eighty millions in the year 1898 She knew nothing in her young days of our modern conveniences The steamboat had been 1 the stormy main 1 he old stage coach was the fast express of those days and the Railroad train still slept in the inventors brain The old tallow dip and the waxcandle were the best il luminants the finest country palace could afford The electric light was an undreamed of possibility The steel and flint were the parlor of that time and the thousand and one conveniences that make our mod ern farm commercial and domestic life a comparative luxury were un known to the hardy and struggling heroes and heroines of those primitive days 2 She was remarkable in the pos session of a strong and vigorous No observant persons could come in contact with her without the tion being forced them that were in the presence of a most markabe mind which do pits its was ed the of the 4 ly not She how by be cate the Her the dren and ized vain the to out ure the and go pect of the highest culture Hers was one of the best minds and she possessed or was possessed of the most unbounded commonsense was remarkable for her stri king personality her independence character While not imperious she was imperial while not hers was a dominating character She was born to rule While possess of the kindliest of natures her will was her sceptre Her judgment was almost unerring enabling her to form her decisions quickly and when once ormed she was not easily moved from them She was therefore a woman of deep and abiding convictions There was never anything biting or spiteful her wor s but she always said what she pleased Strange to say we loved her the more because of this This striking feature her life drew hearts toward her Very few old people especially those who have been practical invalids for years and years kept in perfect touch with old and young like Aunt Lucinda as she lovingly called Her hold on the people was remrrkable The old lov her and the young revered her As shadows of her eventful life lengthened she did not become angry with the world nor soured at man kind but like a golden sheaf of wheat mellowed and ripened by the sunlight heaven she was gathered in the richness and wealth of her years into heavenly garner She was remarkable for her strong faith Her hold on God was preeminently sublime Poverty ear struggles separation from her ba loved children even death itself could dampen the ardor of her love for Christ or disturb the even flow of the river of peace that transformed her heart into a garden of bloom and beauty and fragrance and fruitage has frequently told me that she never permitted nerself to doubt the inspiring truth that All things do work together for good to them that love God In conversations with her often have I been put to shame the simplicity and childlikeness trust in God and her complete rest on the promises of His word In such faith she found complete from worry and to this fact must traced the lone life that was vouch safed to an otherwise frail and deli body She lived as God would have her live and was given to see length of days and the goodness of Lord in the land of the living declining years were spent under kindly ministration of loving chil with every care brushed away every want supplied They real during her lifetime what a rich treasure they had in her so that their after years need not b filled with regrets because they knew not day of their visitation and failed pour upon her the libation of their love She went as she prayed to go in the twinkling of an eye doubtless with a struggle or a pain out of dark ness into light out of pain into pleas out of the frailty of the animal instinct- I have often been urged to ask your acceptance of the following which goes far to prove that instinct in animals and reason in man are VIT much alike It was seven years that while walking in the ground about my larie hall Lan dudno now a convalescent home in the occupation of the Birmingham hospital fund my attention was ar rested by three thrushes who were lying excitedly to and fro in front ol me and so close that I could have caught them Following their meats I noticed that their path was always over my little dog a fox terrier pup about ten months old which was lying in the grass and each bird as it passed struck at him with its wings Going to the dog I found that it held between its mocili and feet a youn thrush fully fledged but not quite able to fly I took the bird quitr un harmed from the dog place I it in the bush gave the little scolding went my way and thought ro mor agent it Next morning seated at breakfast 1 heard the cluttering of a bird outside a door which opens into a terrace garden This flour is par tially glazed and looking through a I saw thrush hopping about it I opened the door and walked slowly forward The bird hopped a yard or so in front I retraced my steps walk ing backward The bird followed Thinking this might be nitre coinci deuce I repeated each movement So did the bird Then calling my sister inlaw from the table suet ficcom panied by her I followed the bird It kept the path n very narrow one as before until opposite the steps There it turned a right angle and after hop ping a yard or two jumped upon a rose hush and waited a moment Then it flew down the steps and kept the short leads on to the drive Once upon the drive its course was freer and it lew a Muttering zigzag course close to the ground The view to the left was hidden by a high hedge of lanrustinus but after going down the drive about twenty yards we were free of this obstruction to the view and there in the grass about ten yards further and exactly where I had tumid him with the bird the day be fore I saw my dog again I only un derstood what the bird wanted and bolted for the dogwhich sure enough had hold of the sane young bird or another of the same nest Again quite unharmed I took It away held it on my linger the mother hovering about placed it in tIll tree The distance traversed was about sixty yards and the time from may first hearing the call outside the door until I reached the dog was at least five min utes The bird had evidently reasoned that the man who rescued its young llje day before would do so again if could he called out It knew too that I trust travel by paths and so it never left then The terrace garden quite unfenced and the direct line was not in the direction of the steps As I have said it was seven years ago and so some may think there is room for questioning TSut within a week 1 told the story half a dozen times am it had taken the set form in which it is BOW given I ought to say that flU dog had often been corrected for attempt to worry young rooks that had fallen from the nests Lotuloi Snectafor Delays are Dangerous Many of our friends or people whom you know of have contracted consump tion pneumonia
