Considering the antiquity of the trumpet and the drum, and their obvious adaptability to sounding signals, it would seem as if field music must have originated simultaneously with That soldiers these instruments. marched and fought to their martin! strains in the most ancient times we know from passages in the Bible and the classics. But there is a difference between military and field music. The former is played by the regimental bands, and consists ehietly of marches and inspiring airs; the latter is played on the field of battle to fire the soldier's heart. Field music is "sounded" by the bugle, the trumpet, the drum or the drum and fife, and consists oi n system of signals by which, instead of bv'word of mouth, commands are conveved to the troop?. It is impossi of ble to discover when the first this kind orinated. Probobly it developed gradually. The fact that a trumpet or a drum can be heard much more distinctly on the battlefield than an olficer's voice, which might at the most important moment be lost in the din, is so obvious that signals for usual commands', "charge" and "retreat," must have come into use with the instruments capable of sounding them, other signals being gradual ly adde'd. Ihe bride holds it in her hand throughout the marriage ceremony, uring it to wipe away her tears. So soon as the marriage festivities are ended the young wife lays the handkerchief aside in her linen closet, and there it remains as long as she lives. Nothing would induce a Tyrolese wife to use this sacred handkerchief. It may be a century or longer before it is taken from its place to fulfill the second and last part of its mission. When the wife dies, perhaps a gray the loving hands of the next of kin place the bridal handkerchief over the face of the dead and it is buried with her in the grave. London o'eJti.
