Uncle Sam and every man been furloughed for thirty days Col Gaither is quoted as saying he is done with military work forever Some people and the men think there were no hardships to bear and every time a man got a little sick he wrote home and his people com plained to the War Department and to me I had a message from the War Department while at Chickamauga sta ting that the citizens of Lebanon had hold a massmeeting and declared that their company should be sent there were but well men in it Upon investigation I found seveutyone well men and only three sick men Gov Bradley came to Chick amaucra when we had but eight sick men in the hospital and ten or twelve sick in quarters He took away near ly thirty including men who were as well as I or any of the others Men finding out that they had a chance to get home would wrap themselves up in blankets throw themselves on the ground and pretend to be sick Peo who go into the army should go with the determination of doing what they are told to do I never ventured to suggest to the Secretary of War what should be done with my regi ment since it was not my place to do so I started out to obey orders and did it uncomplainingly IT is believed that Germany has been scheming to take a hand in the disposition of the Philippines The authrities at Washington have learn ed that acting instructions from Merlin the German Commanderin chief of the Asiatic squadron has been investigating the coal deposits of the islands This has been considered of sufficient importance to be laid before the Peace Commission The President not propose to allow Germany to secure any of the Philippines or to permit Spain to dispose of any in the far East and has instructed the commission to demand of Spain reversionary rights in the islands for the United States Gov of Illinois has refus ed the petition of the Temperance Union to have the battleship Illinois christened with water lie says the sacrament the most solemn of the church is celebrated these mouse tracks the women would put in the same time trying to persuade poor whiskysoaked wretches to quit the evil of their way they would come nearer liviLg up to their motto IK his speech at Lexington Congress man Settle said Personally I am opposed to keeping the islands Eng land is desirous that we should keep the Philippines She hopes for an liance with us I believe that the Uni ted
