the defendant Messrs Homer Batson and Robert Davidson were made examiners for Garrard county on Tuesday Colonel Coffey colored was fined 75 and six months confinement in jail to work at hard labor for willful and malicious shooting and wounding Herndon and Tomlinson appeared for the defendant The case against William McCoy for murder was passed till next week George Smith who is under indict ment for forgery failed to appear and his bond was forefited The grand jury has found eleven in dictments seven for felonies and it is likely that more business will be done term than during any term for some time past John Simpson for concealed weap ons by default judgment was given 30 days in jail and fined 100 The grand jury indicted Porter Wearen and Edwin Clouse for murder and their trials are the beginning of the regular work Miss Mary Mayfield of the Ladies Home Journal was given and presented the merits of her paper The first subject of the day was Spelling was opened by Miss Claudie Arnold who was followed by a number of others presenting ous methods of teaching spelling and also some of the difficulties arising After the close of this subject A F Caldwell presented the subject of Wri ting and was fallowed by B F Brief addresses from these and others brought out the fact that is very much neglected in the schools Prof P W Grinstead of Lexington who was present and made an excellent address at the close of which the Institute extended him a vote of thanks The meeting was then adjourned to meet at 139 p m After the usual opening Mr C D Lewis of Eubanks and representative of various Educational gave a talk emphaszing the fact that every teacher ought to be supplied with one or more firstclass education al journalsComposition was then introduced by Miss Knapp West in a brief but in teresting talk She was followed by Mrs Mary Anderson Mrs Amon and others each one discussing some par ticular phase of the subject The Con ductor then closed the discussion wl a review of the entire Grammar was the next subject and was merely introduced by Miss Mittie Dunn Prof K F Postel followed with a somewhat lengthy discussion setting forth some new ideas as to how to get the pupil to really like to study it After a short recess the subject of Diagraming was briefly presented by A F Caldwell Next the subject of Parsing was taken up and discussed at some length by Miss Allie Dunn Prof Lumley then gave a review of the various subjects under Grammar and showed conclusively that he re garded diagraming as being of little value The Institute then adjourned to meet at 845 Thursday THURSDAY The Institute convened at 915 and was opened with song Bible Reading and prayer the devotional exercises being led by Rev Campbell pastor of the Baptist church The first subject of the day was Dis cipline and was opened by E W in a 10minutes talk after which it was pretty thoroughly discussed by the Institute Summing up the ideas advanced Good order or Discipline is that condition and line of conduct that will enable both teacher and pupils to do the best work possible The subject of Geography was then presented in a very interesting way by Mr Postel Mr Evans and Miss Wor rel also gave some helpful ideas and methods of teaching that difficult branch Prof Lumley closed the sub ject with an address showing that to teach geography successfully one must not confine himself or the pupils to the text book but on the contrary must teach it very largely in a and independent of the text book The Institute then adjourned until 130 THURSDAY VEXING After opening the Institute with song the subject of Mental was merely introduced by Mr lIen drickson and Practical Arithmetic by Miss Ida Duncan after which the Con ductor gave a most practical talk on the subject Following this Miss Lusk the County Supcrintendentgave a talk for the special benefit of trus tees in regard to the late changes made in the Common School Law The subject of History was very briefly introducad by Mrs Gulley who was followed by short talks from of the teachers and also by a final exposition of the subject by Lumley Prof Lumleys address sug gested the propriety or impropriety of teaching all the history of our coun good and bad The differ ence of opinion among the teachers caused the most animated discussion of the week some holding that only the good should be given the others that lIe have imparted to him a full good and bad The whole discussion did not destroy the truth of the saying that A man con vinced against his will is of the same opinion still and hence the Institute adjourned to meet again Friday FRIDAY After opening with the usual song service Bible reading and prayer were led by Prof B S Gowen The first subject for discussion was Civil Government and was presented by Mr Postel of Sandusky Ohio in a very plain and practical way He was followed by Prof Lumley in his usual ly interesting manner Next the subject of School came up for discussion and began in a very promiscuous way quite a va riety of opinions and methods being given as to how to manage the school A short recess was taken and then Mr Wilford Caulkins of Chattanooga Tenn took up the subject and made a very interesting and instructive ad dress In fact one of the very best of the entire week At the close of Mr Caulkins address Miss Virgie Worrel introduced a prop osition in regard to Normal schools and certificates She was by Miss Amanda Anderson j and also by Mr C D Lewis After some desulto ry and ineffective crossfiring which lasted until the noon hour Institute until 130 p m After opening the Institute with mu Mr Canlkins offered a nice book to the first one who would correctly the following question Is unconstitutional for the President ana Vice President of the reading of the resolutions on motion of E W Baker it was agreed they should be taken up discussed and passei upon separately Following are those adopted First Whereas Mr H R Postel and P W Grinstead have given to the In stitute information on the methods of teaching which we deem of the value Resolved That the special thanks of the Institute are hereby tendered them and resolved further that our thanks are also extended to Prof Lum ley for his ready able and efficient service as our Instructor Second Whereas The inequality cf beginning the schools throughout the county rise to some dissatis faction Resolved That the trustees and teachers and County Superinten dent are hereby requested to make an effort to have all the schools begin at the same time and also that the teach ers Institute be held during the week before the opening of the schools Third Whereas we the teachers in Garrard county believe that we would derive more benefit from County Nor mals than from the county Institute as established by the present law of KentuckyResolved 1st That the present law ought to be so amended that County Normals will be substituted for 2nd That the County Institutes ought not to be dispensed with unless the County Normals be substituted in their place 3rd That the said Normals should be held for not less than ten days and that the expenses be pail out of the Common School Fund 4th Resolved That county certifi cates ought to be abolished and only State certificates be issued by State authorities Also that we in every way possible urge and assist our and Senators in securing this legislation- We also urge the teachers of other counties and all others interested to aid in securing the passage of such a law and we appeal especially to our own Superintendent Miss Elisa Lusk for her aid and empower her to call upon any or all of us for our coope ration in this direction After the adoption of the resolutions Prof Lamley gave a very pleasant talk after which the Institute closed by singing My Country tis of Thee INSTITUTE SPARKS The two young men from Wallace ton without doubt the most handsome in the whole lot were at first so care ful of their health as to be afraid to come out through the rain to the Insti tute but be it said to their credit that before it closed they not only were but were decidedly very much interested in quite a number of the teachers individually- One of the lady teachers who since last year has doubled a mans expen ses and her responsibilities became so deeply interested in the work of the institute that she actually failed to answer at roll call and afterward con fessed to the secretary that she had actually forgotten her name for the time being At one time during the session two of our oldest teachers of opposite sex and both still enjoying single edness passed such compliments upon each others ability and they were received so gracefully that Prof Luniley found it advisable to refer to them as bouquets in order to pro ceed the real discussion Now we dont blame any young singlelady teacher for taking advantage of any opportunity that presents even a pos sibility of a chance to better her way of making a living and enjoying life we do think that B F Evans ought to know better than to shy his bouquets during Institute One of the lady teachers was heard to make the complaint After the la marry they still dont think that is at all hope that when this good woman enters doubleblessedness she will not have to find out what some of the others have viz A man sometimes wants a teacher for a wife in order that she reported July 1st TOBACCO Tobacco has not fared well during July The wide difference in the of the early and late set was reaccentuated during the month and it now appears that a very little of the late setting can be counted up on to make either a good yield or a good quality of the article So are reports on these points that it may be set down as assured that the anticipated large crop will
