first to enlist from Garrard county He was just twentythree years old and enjoyed good health nearly 11 his life At the Chickamauga camp he contracted typhoid fever and notwith standing the fact that competent physicilns did all in their power to check the dreaded disease he grew rapidly worse and died Friday night Johnston was a son of the late Joseph Johnston and a halfbrother of Johnston who clerked in Robin sons hardware store for many years he was universally liked and popular is shown by the fact that ev ery business house in town was closed and the citizens turned out en masse to attend the funeral The remains were brought here and placed in the vault Friday night and the funeral took place Saturday morning Elder Jesse Walden and Rev Henry Faul conducted the ceremonies the were re ceived from 14S correspondents repre senting 95 counties WHEAT Development of the wheat crop dur ing the mouth of June shows the results in the great wheat growing States of the Jlississppi Val ley In Ohio and Michigan the crop is fair both in yield and quality In Illinois Missouri an 1 Kansas the crop has suffered greatly during June from rust and chinch bug and the qualilj will be poor owing to damage from these sources The quality is greatly impaired by the presence of an un usually large number of smut heads Where threshing has begun the 3rield is very disappointing In Iowa and Nebraska winter wheat varies from very fine in some sections to poor in others In these States sj rng wheat is threatened with rust owing to the rank growth of the plant In Kentucky the excep tonally Cne showing of June 1st has not been maintained and the crop is fully from one third short of what was anticipated The most frequently ed cause of damage is rust which seems to have been general The
