countys call Obituary Having stated in our last issue that the life and character of Mr John L Arnold deceased deserves a buller mention than was then given we note the following lIe was born January 23 1S33 being 05 years old at the time of his death He had been a suffer of asthma since 1855 but being possessed of a strong nerve and great will power he succeeded well in life and reared a large and highly respected family lIe was a man of fixed convictious on every subject either in private or life and always had cheerful word for everybody with whom he came in contact no difference what was his condition in Ii e lIe was an indulgent father an affictiouate husband a kind neighbor and a consistent member of the Christian church Being ever ready to lend a helping hand toward any enterprise that had in view the elevation and cultivation of his fellow man he will be missed in this com munity and wherever he was knowr In fact his character should ba emu lated by the rising generation there by improving and bettering mankind He was not only distinguished for his noble qualities in times of peace but following his honest convictious he enlisted in the Confederate army about the beginning of the late war and was one of the valiat members of the 3d Ky cavalry under General Uano until the close of time war Many men who had become attached to him during that struggle as well as in the road is one of the finest in the country its being perect in every detail The track is ballasted with broken rock and gravel and is entirely free from dust The heavy steel rails make the road as smooth as a billiard table The coaches are of the most modern pattern and are simply moving pal aces Leaving Danville at 1110 a m you are whirled along through beauti ful mountain scenery and mailed in Chattanooga for suppar Chattanooga is a good size place and we were sur prised to see so much energy as is displayed in the little city The mobi lization of troops at Chickamauga vast amount of business to In HOi appointments ar t I hash P Chattanooga anl many thousands of are being left with the To get to Chickamauga you take a train leaving the Q C station being about thirteen miles to camp it takes about thirty minutes to make run The station is named Lytle and is in Georgia Arriving at this station you are not with our boys by any means The camp of the Second Kentucky is about two and a half miles further A great lot of hacks stand ready to haul one to any part of the park for twentyfive cents and the rivers both black and white almost ull a fellows clothe off to induce him to ride The drive to the park is uautiful A continual stream o army teams line the road and the rat tIe of the wagons together with the oaths of the drivers make the place anything but lonesome Chickamauga is one of tile grandest military in tho world It lies to the east of Missionary Ridge and embraces more than fiitocn square miles of The aggregate length of roads forming time approaches is thirtysix miles These are all fine macidamized roadways built and maintained the expense of the National Government There has been no work done in the Park for merely decorative purposes but the field has been restored as near ly as possible to its condition at the time of the battles The projectors o this enterprise among whom were some of the most famous Generals oi the North and South intended at first that the Park only the field of Chickamauga and in 1S89 the Chickamaga Memorial Association was organized with that end in view The following winter however II V the author if the ject conceived the idea of enlarging Mountain and Missionary Ridge in the Spring of 1890 this idea was out and the whole established as a National Park and placed under the control of the Secretary of War who appointed as the two civilian members of the Commission Gen Joseph S Ful lerton Chairman and Gen Alex P Stewart a leading exConfederate with Stanford C Kellogg of the Fourth United States Cavalry as the Army Officer provided by law who was also appoited Secretary the Commission Gen II V Boynton was appointed Historian and Mr E E Betts Civil Engineer The eleven Southern States that had organizi tions in the battles soon after Commissions and made liberal ap propriations for the erection of mon uments varying from 300 to 95000 There is at this date upward of 300 monuments in place on the field most of them very handsome ones besides hundreds of markers and tablets There have been erected five steel observation towers seventy feet hIgh at prominent points in the Park and along the Ridge They arj all in sight of each other and the series of observations when combined com mand the entire field The Second Kentucky Regiment of which the Lancaster company is a is located on an elevated which makes a very desirable The tents of the twelve compa run parallel the officers quar being about thirty feet to dollars merchants It the reservations territory shouldembrace emIand carried and of appointed time f GenIi Boynton t front To the rear are the cooking ovens To the front of the line offi cers tents the regimental and staff officers quarters The camp is cleaned each morning by the old guard The old guard means the fellows on duty the night before The guard house occupants are made to do this work mostly but the boys are bc having so nicely that seldom is there a man run iu The boys are kept pretty busy all day and seldom have time to loaf The reveille is sounded at 530 a m Then at C15 the compa nies are drilled for two and onehalf hours This over an officers held for one hour Then the non commissioned officers go to school for an hour After dinner nothing is done until 333 when tho lions are drilled for two hours At 030 the dress parade is given and at t 30 taps are sounded which means every must roll up in his blanket and go tosleepThe company known as Co L now has seventyfive men all told It will be recruited to 103 imme diately We found the boys in good spirits and full of lie and fun They have been uniformed and are indeed a fine body of men They have a num They have plenty of blankets and the tjnts being well ditched they well fixed as soldiers could expect to be Of course they sleep on the ground but being healthy men this will not hurt them though it would go pretty hard with a mamas darling The men are as well drilled as any in
