enclosure on public days This order will be strict ly enf rced It is a nice move for the lots are ran over grass trampled down and I e sides ifj a horse runs away theres no telling what damage would result Loungers Marshal Walker has been ordered by the Council to keep the little negroes off the streets This is a wise move and now if they will issue a similar order in regard to loafing white boys and men who lounge about the streets all day stare at ladies and discuss oth er peoples affairs the Council will be given a vote of thanks by the commu nity at large Some of the white loaf ers arc Lexington have been greatly exaggerated They have been well treated and fed While of course canarybird food was not hand ed them on silver salvors yet what they got was as good as any soldier ought to expect Their uniforms and guns have not been issued but these will be furnished at Chickamauga The Show Cooper Cos circus drew only a fair size crowd to town Friday the weather bluffing off the people The show carries no fl abitten dyspeptic and loudsmelling animals but gives its undivided attention to the ring show The performers were the best we ever saw and some of the featS were remarkable Of course the band was circus ever had a poor band Those who attended got drenched by the rain but they were amply repaid by the excellent per formance Another Circus We understand Harris Nickelplate soldiers both Coufederate and Federal will meet in the Masonic Hall Monday at one oclock and march from there to the Court House where speeches will be made by prominent men At the conclusion of the the veterans will march to the Cemetery and decorate the graves of all soldiers buried there Those ii charge request all who will contribute flowers to send them to Masonic Hall before dinner Monday and also ask the good ladies to come then and ar range the flowers into suitable bo quets All old soldiers are expected to join in and assist in these ceremonies In Fine Shape Mr J Mort Rothwell came down from Dripping Springs Saturday and tells THE RECORD that the work of re building at his resort has about been completed All the old houses were torn away and splinter new ones erected The hotel proper has many large airy rooms and broad verandas extend around the entire building Mr Rothwell has had ten carpenters at work for some six or eight weeks and the work was pushed rapidly He has purchased new carpets and furni ture for the rooms and no hotel will be neater or better appointed than wilMoe famous old Dripping Springs Mrs Rothwell will have supervision of the table which fact insures this department to be second to none in the state K P Decoration Sunday Garrard Lodge No 29 Knights o Pythias will hold its annual decorat ion exercises Sunday afternoon The members will meet at their hall prompt ly at 2 oclock and at 230 sharp will march to the Court House where the usual ceremonies will be held Rev Henry Faulconer will deliver the oration this year The public is cor dially invited to witness these cere monies and hear the oration At the conclusion of the Court House exer cises the Knights preceeded by the Lancaster band will march to the Cemetery and decorate the graves the brethren sleeping there The K P ceremonies are beautiful and the members are working now getting each part down nicely a speaking To Chickamauga The second Regiment of which the Lancaster is a member was ordered to Chickamauga and went to that point Wednesday afternoon the men had not received their or guns but will receive thesa at the new quarters M Farra who was here Sunday tells us the gen eral impression is the boys will remain at Chickamauga for at least three months and then probably be ordered to either Marila or Cuba He says that if the war is brought to a close even within the next month that U S troops will be needed in Cuba until a stable Government is established He says our men are all in good spirits and are delighted at the idea of going south He says the boys a e slightly disappointed at not getting their uni forms but they are happy as larks Death ofMrs Palmer A telegram announcing the death of Mrs J T Palmer at Richmond crea ted great surprise among the familys many friends in Lancaster Mrs Pal mer had been ill only for a few days and a surgical operation became She was unable to stand the strain and beathed her last at 1230 oclock Saturday The remains were brought to Lancaster Sunday after noon and funeral services conducted by Rev Faulconer in the Presbyterian church The deceased was a Miss Cochran and was born and reared in this county She possessed all the traits which go to make a noble Chris tian woman and was a great favorite with all who her acquaintance She leaves to mourn with her bereav ed husband two children They are Elsie 12 and John aged 10 Their heartbroken relatives have the sympathy of all in their sad affliction At the of the services at the church the remains were followed by a large procession of friends to the night lie was in a buck board with Tom Cecil and when near Hubble drove to a watering trough Cecil got out and removed the bit so the horse could drink The animal became frightened and Hamilton not knowing the bridal was loose jerked up the reins The horse started to run and Hamilton rolled out the back of the wagon He fell some distance and struck his head on a rock A deep gash was cut in the back of his head and he was rendered unconcious lie was brought to town and physicians worked with him all night The fall was severe and blood ran from Mr Hamiltons ear nearly all night before it its lovelist last week when the delegates arrived to attend the con vention of the 8th Kentucky district of the W C T U The cordial wel come which each received from the committee portended a pleas ant time which was fully realized as the days glided to rapidly by The convention began Tuesday May 17th with the first Grand Gold Medal Contest which has been held in the State About one hundred temperance recitations in various parts of the district preceeded this grand consummation of the contest work Young ladies from Madison Laurel and Garrard counties were in the contest which was conducted by Mrs R selind Nesbitt of Mt Ver non The medal was awarded to Miss Anderson of Lancaster The convention was formally open ed May 18th at 9 a m in the Presby terian church by the president Mrs May Patterson of Lancaster Devot ional evercises were led by Mrs Ward of Livingston after which a constitut ion was adopted and the folloving committee appointed On Curtesies Mrs Romans and Mrs paper Shall we study the child which was very fino and widely dis cussod On Wednesday evening the Presby torian church was well fillel by an at tentive audience to hear the impres sive lecture delivered by Mrs Francis Beauchamp in her most graceful man ner She held the wrapped attention of her audience for almost an hour which the lovely children of the Kindergarten class rendered a song in which the Stars and Stripes figured prominently Miss Margaret Murphy their teacher should justly feel proud of her charm ing charges for the boy of tcday is the ma a of tomorrow Mr Volney B Cushing delivered a temperance lecture Thursday at the Presbyterian church and one upon The Lost Atlantis at the Friday evening An elegant reception was given the convention by the Childs Culture Club at the College Thursday after noon Mrs Eikin in her usual manner gave a talk pertaining to the work of the club Mrs McRoberts and Miss Shumate read papers and Pres Gowen and Miss Murphy gave an interesting talk After discussion of topics of interest all partook of the elegant refreshments served so grace fully by Misses Kinnaird and Shumate The officers chosen for next year Mrs May Patterson president people may k low what I have done and ulso I shrill mention before 1 finish this article spme of the things that lead to my retirement As you will r I came here three years ago to organize and take charge of the Graded School The were from many very few had ever worked together many had never worked at all there was no sort of regularity in their gra ding some were three jears further behind in some studies than in others I had to take all this raw material and make a school of it DJ you it was an easy task 1 say that I have done three years of the hardest work of my life getting the school in laying the foundation and really the foundation is not more than laid frwhat is three years in the life of a school Time first and most important lesson I had to teach was this you must work and it was a hard task By careful estimate the time I have out of school hours to pupils who had to have it or fall behind and time of course that I got not a cent for will amount to three and one if not four months and some of the other teachers can say the sum There was no discipline at all when I began The first week I was here I left my room to visit another and expected the pupils to behave in my absence but when I came back my room was in a perfect uproar a pandemonium only three 1 think out of forty who were not I speak of this to show the utter lack of discipline at Now I have pupils much younger and hence more likely to misbehave in the absencs of a teacher but when I leave them to visit other rooms I nev er have sudh a scene as the one I de scribed 1 trust them and they prove themselves worthy of trust Some individual members may have taken advantage when I have been out of the room but as a class or grado never I have returned to my room at all unexpected times not to never do that the other teach ers have came in to see me not I was out and visitors have come in nnder similar circumstances and the pupils have always been found be having behaving because t h o 3 thought it right not because of any threat from me This is my kind of kind that reaches the the conscience and takes hold of the life and controls it but if I cmt reach a papil this way I will some otheY he must behave no mat ter who he is I will not make distinc dont believe in having an aristocracy in school Treat all alike ts my motto whether rich or poor high or low makes no difference to me My head went off once for car rying out this policy but I continue to fplow the same plan even at the risk of tosing my head again When I came here I found the walls literally covered with names Written with pencil and charcoal These were all hid when the walls were papered and if there i one now on any of the walls written since I have been here I cant find it The desks by actual count showed over qne thousand cut and so on During my administration only two have been cut and both of these soon after I began Hundreds and hundreds of names were written and scars were made on the pianos with nails and hairpins not one has been done during my stay The attendance when I bejan was something fearful I have been told that pupils used to loaf around town instead of being at their recitations Such a thiwg has occurred only a few times duririg my administration and in every case but one parents have written me that it with their per The attendance in my room the first term was about 70 per cent This year omitting the weeks of scarlet fever scare my room whioh has pupils has averaged about 97 per months it has gone to 99 and only once below 95 The whole school has frequently av eraged 91 Our average for all the months this year including the weeks of fever scape will of course fall much lower than these figures for you we have had three fever scares one of mumps one of ton and some of them have cut us down onehalf for a week or more Not a school whose report comes tome Louisville St Louis Nashville Chattanooga Philadelphia can equal us on regularity this year in months free from the scares mentioned Some criticisms have been made be we have not more grown pupils If grown pupils dont want to work what do you want with them Do they the school No they hurt it Somt people like to boast of a big number quantity not quality is their motto Is a church any better because large If you increase the membership of a church by taking in swearers usurers extortioners card players dancars drinkers or gamblers is it anything to brag about Just so with a school if you get in material not suitable to make a school pupils without ambition out of with the school and teacher l hot for such pupils and they will stop Out of the forty in my grade at first less than twenty made it through for the second year I made them work they dilnt like work very well so they stopped Was that any fault of mine Some seem to think so This year out of thirty in my room only one has stopped and that was because his family moved away n j Now as to the school work done my class has this year read nearly three hundred pages of latin whereas the first year they read something over a hundred Besides reading near three times as much they have read it about five timesas well as they did at first and the other work has been fully as good and some even better Believing that the education of the heart is more important than that of the head we have not stopped with teaching the ordinary branches those prescribed by we have put the very best literature into the hands of the pupils time expense of all this has ben borne mainly but it would not be right for me not to give proper credit to that noble band of women the W C T Us when I laid before them my plan of educating the young instead of the old on the tem perance question they generously a nice little sain and so did one man with which I purchased a goodly number of books on temper ance and also on kindness to animals besides subscribing for a dozen or more copies of papers on these lines Many even of our younger pupils have read more than a dozen books this year can cultivate in boys a taste for good reading then loafing with all its attendant evils will not bo so When I first took charge nearly all the upper half of the school had that old false idea that pupils and teachers must be enemies That has been one of the harJest things we have had to overcome and we have not overcome it fully yet We still have a few pu pils who will not allow us to be their friends and they will not ba ours but it is not one fiftieth part as bad as at first But why have I said all this Simply in selfdefense How selfdefence Why this way My services are not desired any longer by the trustcesand of course there must be some reason for it One would think that perhaps I had not done my duty that my work was not satisfactory Therefore I have given you some facts that you may draw your own conclusions as to the merit or demerit of But some one may object that I Say these things o nyself and of course show thorn up to my own advantage let those who object show them up to their advantage where will they get their testimony During the three years of my princi palship only one trustee has ever heard me conduct a recitation and he heard me only once another came to see me on business and got in about one minute before I closed a recitation and heard me that long If they think they hays heard me more than that their memory is at fault What is true of my room is also true of most of the other room One of the teachers has never been heard a single minute and another not over five they tell me Still other rooms report to me about three visits of five or tea minutes each by one trustee none by the others What I mean by visiting is listening to the teacher conduct a recitation not merely going into a room as for instance to be out at chapel exercises or to make a talk or read to the pu pils either by invitation or without it Now Im willing to leave it to a sen sible public whether the board can know anything of our work except from hearsay when only one trus tee has ever heard us and he only once in three years In civil or criminal law do they a man on hearsay Then why condemn teachers But where pray does the hearsay come from From the patrons the masses From the pupils If so what pupils the good industrious obedi ent pupils or those who have got into trouble If they would come and see my work for themselves and then tell me it was a failure I could see some excuse for their course but I wouldnt a word of what they say for I have taught in the same school with men from the best schools in the cons of Alabama Union University Chicago Johns Hopkins and German they didnt consider my work a failure Do you suppose then that I would feel bad for a board of trustees to call failue No not even if THEY should so decide after careful inspection of my work Then should I when they condemn without any inspection I believe all will agree that there must b3 something else Perhaps I have not been a gool citizen It cant be religious prejudice for Im tod that the only two who are for me are not members of the same church Im a member of Unfortunately I have incurred the displeasure of some of the trustees of course they should not because of prejudice or dislike take out their spite in an official way this point is emphasized by all writers on the subj ict Chancellor Payne Geo ers on earth a reputation as disciplinarians and I would not fc r the verdict How many of my trustees read books on education or educational journals either those designed for teachers or those designed for trustees 1 do not know 1 make it my business to three of these Especially in my trustees journal which gives thi dealings of boards all over the United States I find condemnation of the very things my board has done If it is right my boarl is wrong if the board is rijrht not only am I wrong but so are all the school men of the country I spoke of two members stopping the wore to make a speech Later on one of them did that quite frequently in different roams not only without my invitation but without my knowledge or consent At the end of the first year a mem ber cams to me saying he had been sent by the board to cjnfer with regard to staying ihis is hs cbs ing sentence You can think over the matter and if you want time place for the next year you can report to Ill put the matter before the board and well sue what about itAlso lie said to me that lu thought there would be no change in the fac principalI the matter hadnt come in the right way that I had been hera a 3ear and they ought to know whether they wanted me so they ought to say so They said that was what they to do so in a few days another member came and told me the board wanted to know if I woul I teach for them again I liked that better agreed to stay Last year word came to me that if I wanted the place I must put in a teachers We answered t nit it to us an unnecessary niliation not imposed upon a single servant in this town It you want your cook for another year do you her to make ormal application in writing or ask for it in any way Dont you ask her to stay if you mean to hire her again 1fT safe for THEM to ap ply Wouldnt justice demand that they come to the rest of us and say it be safe fjr us to apply Some say Go on and apply if that will do them any good if it will make them feel big to be looked up to to uponBut we would be elect ed if we should apply Of course not otherwise why such secrecy why do they refuse tj answer when asked the pointed question Will they be elect ed if
