commenced Misses Mary Miller May Hughes and Dove Harris readily and cheerfullj undertook the task of soliciting dana tions for the spread The three noble ladies walked all afternoon in a going from house to house collecting the provisions At eight oclock that night a row of ta bles in the hall at the Court House were ladened with many kind of good things to tempt the palates of the young warriors We have never seen a more bountiful public supper spread than was there for the boys The ta bles were waited upon by Misses Ber tha Burnside Nellie Marrs Mary Mil ler May Hughes Elisa Lusk Altie Marksbury Bessie Bush Alberta An derson Dove Harris Lula Anderson and many others of Lancasters socie ty folks After ample justice had been done the supper the boys were ad dressed by Capt speakers frequently Too much praise cannot be shower ed upon the young ladies for the pat riotic work done by them weatl er was miserable and they ran the risk of a spell of sickness by plodding through the rain but they worked bravely through the entire afternoon and til ten oclock in the ngit to give the boys a good sendoff and show them that our people apprecia ted their bravery in risking WAR TALK Two attempts have been made to poison the water used by the regulars in camp at Mobile Ballance United States mus tering officer said he would rush the Kentucky men to the front as soon as equipments are furnished if he has to send one company at a time It is claimed that no material aid can be given the insurgents in Cuba until at least three bases of supplies are occupied then it would re quire weeks to mobilize the insurgent forces The Surgeons Board began the work of examining volunteers at Lex ington Tuesday Of 79 men in Compa ny G of Covington 19 failed to pass and 24 men will have to be recruited to fill the company The work is now progressing swiftly The men at Lexington are begin ning to complain of their quarters They say they would prefer the open field to the crowded buildings Many of them are anxious to go to the front and the news telling of the change in the plans for the volunteer army to le sent direct to the coast centers is peasant news to them There may not be a great naval bat tIe at present in Porto Rican waters unless information conveyed to the United States Government is errone ous Instead of the expected naval battle we are to have the bombard ment of Havana and San Juan and the military occupation of Cuba and Porto Rico sooner than anticipated In consequence of this plan for im me Hate t movement against Havana and San Juan the Thompson a candidate for renomination by the Dem ocratic party for Representative in Con press from this the Sth district Kentucky troops at Lexington were stirred up considerably Tueiday when they were told they would be ordered south as fast as they could be equipped Reports from Lexington say every one of the recruits so far questioned is wild with joy at the seeming opportunity to move forward They are eager for the quick arrival of the equipment ordered by Captain from Washington and which it is thought will be here by the last of next week at the furthest The soldiers are being put through a great deal of work Instead of the light drilling received last week in small doses they are now required to drill about six hours a day The men are in good health and spirits but are greatly perplexed at the snails gait in which they are equipped Capt Uallancc the army officer in charge of the recruiting in Kentucky was interviewed regarding the time necessary to get the Kentucky troops into the field lIe said We cannot leave here until they areequippedand I am afraid that will b3 a long time It is doubtful if the wool has been sheared for the Kentuckians uniforms and you know we cannot go into a campaign until they are properly uni formed We are getting along very slowly for all this work is new and we nave no precedents to go by J he same rules which were in force when the volunteers of the civil war were being mustered into service do not ap ply now and it is a much slower busi ness than it was in those days IT is hoped that the poor condition in which the state troops were found will have the effect of opening the eyes of our people ana causing better provision to be made for the guard It is impossible for an Adjutant General or Governor to keep the troops on fighting footing when the legislature fails and refuses to set aside money for the purpose A great many men have served as legislators who did not even know of the existence of a state guard The election of such men is tie direct cause of our troops being so far be hind other states when Uncle Sam called for help The adjutant gener als make reports after reports calling attention to what is needed by the guards but the average legislator slept through their reading the re ports were pigeonholed and that end ed it 1 he writer of this article was a member of the State Guard for six years and knows of the way the or ganization has been neglected No officers on earth can sustain good unless the equipments are forthcoming If the salaries paid a number of figureheads at Frankfort were applied toward keeping up the State Guard it would be far better for the Commonwealth If firstclass equipment was furnished the best ycung men in the state would enlist and we would soon have a guard equal to that of the other states IT has been clearly demonstrated that the Spanish gunners are a flat failure While it was to be expected that the best ships of Deweys squad ron would receive little or no injury at the hands of the Spanish fleet it is difficult to understand how his lighter vessels got away from the large Span ish cruisers without something to show that there had been a fight
