uown a few items that I suppose the most of your old citizens of Lan caster are familiar with In 1801 the late civil war between the North and South was the establishing a recruiting and on the farm of Kichard Robinson in Garrard county in charge of lien Nelson and known as Camp Dick Robinson This place was occu pied until some time in 1862 when the recruits were sent to the front Then Camp Nelson was organized and locat in Jessamine county just across the Kentucky river near the camps and the preparations for war created quite an excitement in many of the leading citizens Men of prominence had different in regard to the cause and justification of he Southern states rebelling the government was this the case with some who were most active and outspoken in denouncing he These men were the kind who with all their expression of patriotism and love of country failed to offer their services tothe government to help put the re down whilst many others from isense of patriotic derson and told him that he was a rebel and that he had better get out or that community Lusk used very rough language which so alarmed An derson that he called on me to give him a body guard to send him home appointed the guard who saw him safe at Anderson was go alarmed at the throats mado against aim that he left his home that night for the southern army At tae time Mr Lusk had a similar warrant issued against J T McQuerry who was then under guard and his trial was to come off the next Monday At J oclock of that morning I took my boos and writing material and to the courthouse and just before I entered the door saw lien J Landram coming toward me lie said release of Anderson he said that he had heard a great deal said about it and as 1 now had to try McQaerry if I did not hold him in bonds tie feared that I would have trouble I undei stood from this that 1 would likely be mobbed I now very well recollect the impression this made upon me at the time 1 of course was and looking the General in the eye I said to him if it is my duty to fry 1 will do so to of my judgment and if I think the law and e win justify in holding him in bonds I will so decide But if I think the charges are not sustained according to law then 1 will dismiss the prosecu tion at the risk of my lie And n w Gen Landram I want you to say to those who have been making tueir threats that I set them at defiance and if at any time in future 1 should be come so trammeled with fear that 1 can not decide a case as my judgment might dictate then 1 will have nural courage to resign my office and let fail ing to do their duty and that the time had come when the law abiding citi zens would take in their own hands that rebels against time govern he was through I reviewed the testi mony and decided that there was noth ing it that would Mc Querry in bonds and dismissed the case There was then quite a in the house that rather alarmed me That afterwards learned was complimentary to my decision On the next I met Mr Lusk and spoke to him as usual and he did not recognize me further than to give me a look of scorn He was then ing part of my office but he moved out at once from that time did not speak only in court on business 1 treated him with as much res pect as other member of the bar In the fall of 1864 I was standing in the door of my shop and saw Mr Lush coming toward me on the side walk and before he reached me he spoke calling me by name and said I want I have said a great many things about you during this war that I am now for Your course t find right while mine was wrong and
