vote being cast on party lines that two democrats ElUott of South Carolina and McAleer of Penn sylvania voted against it and one re publican Linney of North Carolina voted for it while another republican refused to vote Representative Rhea made his maiden speech and drew fourth rounds of applause from the democrats and a storm of republi can hisses by declaring that if there was one place who has gradually and gracefully worked himself to the front ranks of Kentucky politics is Hon Sam J Roberts editor of the Lexington Leader and collector of the seventh internal revenue district He came to Lexington from Ohio a few years ago and started the Leader and despite the many words of and the uphill pull has made that paper one of the foremost in the state Mr Roberts has been very modest and is one of the few people who have moved into the state who did not immediately proceed to tell Kentuckians how they must act and what they must do From an humble editor he has risen to an important leader in politics and if we were after a job under McKinley we wouldVath er have the name of Sam J Roberts attached to our papers than that of any other Kentucky republican He has tackled one job lately though in which he will meet his Waterloo and that is in harmonizing the republi can party in the state There is no way under the sun by which he can succeed in the latter as long as there is pie and honna sah to be divided among the wouldbe bosses IT is evident from her letter to the February Ladies Home Journal that Miss Lillian Bell finds much in Pars to interest and amuse her Among other things that are rather novel to an American one sees she writes the comical sight of a French bride and lridegroom in all the glory their bridal satin veil and orange through the streets in open cabs and hugging and kissing each other with an unctu ous freedom which is apt to throw a conservative American into a spasm of laughter Indeed the frank and can did way that lovemaking goes on in public among the lower classes is so amazing that at first you think you never in this world will become ac customed to it butyou get accustomed to a great many strange sights in Paris It a kss and break this on the hand some vessels prow as it glides into the ocean While not much of a howl had yet been set up over using whisky yet the longfaced old sisters would most certainly been heard very much fear the old saying A good beginning has a bad ending will prove true with the Kentucky legislature They started out by in troducing many needed bills but on the latter half of the term have Nelson was organized and locat in Jessamine county just across the Kentucky river near the camps and the preparations for war created quite an excitement in many of the leading citizens Men of prominence had different in regard to the cause and justification of he Southern states rebelling the government was this the case with some who were most active and outspoken in denouncing he These men were the kind who with all their expression of patriotism and love of country failed to offer their services tothe government to help put the re down whilst many others from isense of patriotic duty enlisted under he federal banner and served their country until the close of the war farmerivedlandling a lot of mules that he had een feeding for the Southern market I sent them down to Ten wrote a warrant for Andersons arrest with disloyalty in aiding and the southern rebellion and brought it for my signature as Couuty Judge 1 signed it and Anderson was brought before me as a court of think we were about two days getting through with the investigation Mr Lush making a long speech at the close of the testimony I gave the case as I careful attention The evidence showed no overt act upon the part of Anderson that I thought would justify a court in hold ing him in bonds so I dismissed the case and adjourned court and as was going out of the court house Judge fiaml Lusk spoke to An derson and told him that he was a rebel and that he had better get out or that community Lusk used very rough language which so alarmed An derson that he called on me to give him a body guard to send him home appointed the guard who saw him safe at Anderson was go alarmed at the throats mado against aim that he left his home that night for the southern army At tae time Mr Lusk had a similar warrant issued against J T McQuerry who was then under guard and his trial was to come off the next Monday At J oclock of that morning I took my boos and writing material and to the courthouse and just before I entered the door saw lien J Landram coming toward me lie said release of Anderson he said that he had heard a great deal said about it and as 1 now had to try McQaerry if I did not hold him in bonds tie feared that I would have trouble I undei stood from this that 1 would likely be mobbed I now very well recollect the impression this made upon me at the time 1 of course was and looking the General in the eye I said to him if it is my duty to fry 1 will do so to of my judgment and if I think the law and e win justify in holding him in bonds I will so decide But if I think the charges are not sustained according to law then 1 will dismiss the prosecu tion at the risk of my lie And n w Gen Landram I want you to say to those who have been making tueir threats that I set them at defiance and if at any time in future 1 should be come so trammeled with fear that 1 can not decide a case as my judgment might dictate then 1 will have nural courage to resign my office and let some man be appointed in my stead I then made the of Gen Lan placed in that it was for me that the evidence should be to writing by someone rather than myself He at first declined I told him I could not let him off and as a friend I requested it at his hand as he was with the pen and his report of the testimony would be above sus picion He then gave his consent aiji we at once commenced the but did not gtt through with the evidence that day e continued the next day and R D Lusk commenced his speech some time after dinner but did not through in time for suppsr The case had attracted a good deal of interest and after supper the courU house was well a good many ladies were present Mr Lnsk his and spoke until about 10 oclock making a very strong arraign ment of the officers of the law for fail ing to do their duty and that the time had come when the law abiding citi zens would take in their own hands that rebels against time govern he was through I reviewed the testi mony and decided that there was noth ing it that would Mc Querry in bonds and dismissed the case There was then quite a in the house that rather alarmed me That afterwards learned was complimentary to my decision On the next I met Mr Lusk and spoke to him as usual and he did not recognize me further than to give me a look of scorn He was then ing part of my office but he moved out at once from that time did not speak only in court on business 1 treated him with as much res pect as other member of the bar In the fall of 1864 I was standing in the door of my shop and saw Mr Lush coming toward me on the side walk and before he reached me he spoke calling me by name and said I want I have said a great many things about you during this war that I am now for Your course t find right while mine was wrong and lonely way She was dressed all in roses In her hand a Her face was glad and merry And her step light and quick On her head a crown of flowers On her feet golden shoes And the little wand she carried Wore the same yellow hues Will you walk into my garden Said her small silvery voice I will show you all my roses And you may take your choice I have only lately planted These rose trees of mine But their blossoms are as fragrant As the finest of the fine I will let you pluck a nosegay Yon may stroll thrbugc my bowers So come this way fair lady And see my pretty flowers fillwith marriedand position smallstick 1 young Then I could not choose but enter Through the gate opened wide So I went into the garden Of my sweet fairy guide She had twentyfive or thirty Little trees In a row And I smiled when I noted How the blossoms seemed to grow And was funny that the flowers Did not bloom out in full For she had Instead of roses Only Rosebuds to pull So I asked the little fairy How she made them so neat Row she kept her charming rosebuds So tidy and so sweet Said she Lady I will tell you I have known a long while With tears of joy I water them Their sunshine is my smile I stepped forth to take a cluster When the spirits golden wand Touched the trees and wonder Beneath my outstretched hand For a little girl came tripping From each tree on my right And on my left were little boys Driving roses out of sight On each leafy top were ringlets All of bright sunny hair And each tree was clad in garments That only children wear Now the sprite became a lady Quite as tall as myself All stallions report already a good bOlking and judging from the feeling among breeders con crning the inquiries about young trot ters the business is decidedly on the mend That the demand is great there can be no doubt still less is there any doubt that the supply is limited For this breeders are bound to anticipate the future and to do this they must get foals and there fore it is reasonable to suppose that many more mares will be bred this season than for several of those past The fact that so many large studs are soon to be dispersed does not mean the mares now owned in them will not be mated this year for their new own ers are more likely to breed them than their present ones That is what they will buy them for The large of brood mares in the State oi Kentucky are owned by breeders with small studs having an average of not more than five or ten mares or even and these men are as a rule farmers who having passed through a most successful harvest and seeing that the business is on the mend will mate their mares this year The younger generation of stallions will hive great opportunities this season Not only have many of them done well with their youngsters that have been on the tracks but thoughtful breeders are beginning to believe that a better bred better looking and faster son of bis sire will out breed the parent The successes of Allerton Axtell Bow Bells and other have incited breeders to look to the fast young stallions for the best results to be hud in breeding u IIIIItOO- L o o o J GlIb 3 S mders 2 Cincinnatia medical paid- a theyar mainlyupon suggest clover The honey bee is a meat ingeuious architect Christopher Wren among insects drawing hexagons and pentagons a freebooter robbing the fields of pollen and aroma won creature of Cod whose hi ography that everywhere the bees had arranged for their own protection and built before their honeycombs an wall of wax through which the bees might go to and fro but not large enough to admit tlu winged this luscious product was hanging in the woods of Itcthaveii the time of Saul and Jonathan Their army was in pursuit of an on emy that by Gods command must be exterminated The soldiery were forbidden to stop to eat any thing until the wcrk was done Jf they disobeyed they were accursed Coming through the woods they found a place where the bees had been busy a great honey manufactory Honey gathered in the hollow of the trees un til it had overflowed upon the ground in great profusion and sweetness All the army obeyed orders and touched it pot save Jonathan and he not know lug the military order about absti neuce dipped the end of a stick he had in his hand into the candied liquid and and tempting it glowed on the eud of the stick he put it to his mouth and ate the honey Judgment fell upon die Alas what multitudes of people in all ages have been damaged by forbidden hon ey by which I mean temptation de licious and attractive but damaging and destructive Corrupt literature fascinating but deathful comes in this category Where one good honest healthful book is read now there is a hundred made up of rhetorical trash consumed with avidity When the boys on the cars come through with a pile of look over the titles and notice that nine out of ten books are injuri ous All the way from here to Chicago or New Orleans notice that objection able books dominate Taste for pure literature is poisoned by this scum of the publishing house Every book in which sin triumphs over virtue or in which a glamour is thrown over dissipation or which leaves you at its last line with less respect for the marriage institution and less abhorrence for the paramour is a de pression of your own moral character The book bindery may be attractive and the plot dramatic and startling and the style of writing sweet as the honey that Jonathan took up with his rod but your best interests forbid it your moral safety forbids it your God forbids it and one tase may lead to such bad results that you may have to say at the close of the experiment or at the close of a misimproved lifetime I did but taste a little honey with the rod that was in my hand and lo 1 must die Corrupt literature is doing more to day for the disruption of domestic life than any other cause Elopements marital intrigues sly correspondence fictitious names given at post office windows clandestine meetings at parks and at ferry pure honey and I was not satisfiel until I purchased all his works at thnt time expensive beyond an easy to own them and with what lc light I went through reading his Seven Lamps of Architecture and his Stones of Venice it is impossible to describe except by spying that it gave me a rapture for good books that will last me while my life lasts All around the church and the world today tlseris are it roll over 1113 parched tongue and down my heated throat the sweet est the most inspiring the most de licious draught that ever thrilled a human frame To cure the habit before it com s to its last tages various plans were tried in olden tmes This plan was recommended in the books When a man wanted to reform he put shot or bullets into the enp of strong drink one additional shot or bullet each lay that displaced so much liquor Bullet after bullet added day by day of course the liquor became less and less until the bullets would entirely fill up he glass and there was no room for tile liquid and by that time it was aid the inebriate would be cured any ona ever was cured in that way I know not but by long experiment it is found that time only way is to stop short off aral when a man does that he needs God to help him Ad there have been more cases than you can count when God has so helped the man that he left off the drink forever and I could Count a score of them some of them pillars in the house of God One would suppose that men would take warning from some of the omin ous names given to the intoxicants and stand off from the devastating influ ence You have noticed for instance that some of the restaurants are called The Shades typical of the fact that it puts a mans reputation in the shade and his morals in the shade and his and children in the shade and his destiny in the
