tobacco grow ers and the buyers representing the I tobacco trust Is growing warmer and more interesting every day Local f methods employed by both forces may r be taken in a certain sense as indicative of general methods that are or will be employed Ihe subject of the tight of course is the price that the buyer shall pay the grower for his to bacco The grower wants 3 round for dark tobacco and 12 for light tobac i co the prices set hy tbe Lynchburg convention and all of them are hold ing for these prices The buyers dont want to pay these prices and are trying to induce the growers to sell at lower figures As far as is known to local members- of the American Society of Equity jonly one crop of tooacco has been sold on the local market This belonged to- E Masonof Hancock county and was sold last week to J D Brashear local layer for the American Tobacco Co at 0 U and 2 Mr Mason sold his crop bOJ use he intended to move away from bis neighborhood had no y1place to store interesting statistics relating to Indian affairs pensions education etc are given in the annual report of the Secretary of the Interior The report in part is aa follows Forest Reserves There are now fiftynine forest reserves created by presidential procla mation under Section 21 of the act of March 3 1891 embracing 03703404 acres Indian Affairs Marked advances toward civiliza tion have been made by the Indians of the United States during the past year and the number of those who have engaged in earning self sap port has materially Increased many wholly supporting themselves aud- families The Indian population has varied but slightly from previous years the number being about the same as reported last year 270000 Of this num ber about 180000 occupy 156 reserva tions in the various States and Terri tories containing about 55127000 acres outside of the State of New York and the Indian Territory Indian schools to the number of 253 were in operation during the fiscal year 1104 us against 257 in 1003 Pensions The report of the Commissioner of Pensions shows that during the fiscal year ended June 30 1004 the total number of pensioners on the roll was 1043011 and the number remaining on the roll at the end of the year was 004702 a net loss of 1783 from the previous yeai The gans to the roll during tne year were 44246 new pensioners and 3128 restorations and renewals a tola of 47374 of this number 320 were pen sioned by special acts of Congress The losses to the roll during the same time by death were 43820 and trom other causes 5337 a total of 40157 a net loss for the year of 1783 The number of deaths of soldier pensioners for the year was 31728 and of this number 30071 were volunteers of the Civil War The pension roll at the close of the year contained the names of 720315
