First Made a Hit APPEARS DEC 14 IN THIS PAPER Charles Wagner author of The Slim pie Life was practically made famous by President Roosevelt author of The Strenuous LlteEarly in 1002 certain well known New York publishers brought out very quietly a translation of The Simple Life At first the book did not attract much attention except among the literary few but among the literary few was President Roosevelt On him the little volume made such an Impression that he referred to It in one of his public ad dresses as follows Tho other day I picked up a little book called The Simple Life written by an AlsatJ n Charles Wagner and ire preached such wholesome sound doctrine that I wish it could be used as- a tract throughout our country To him the whole problem of our complex somewhat feverish modern life can be solved only by getting men and women to lead better lives lie sees that the permanence of liberty and democracy depends upon a majority of the people being steadfast In that good plain morality which as a national attribute comes only as the result of the slow and painful labor of centuries and which can be squandered in a genera tion by the thoughtless and vicious lie pfea hcs the doctrine of the superiority of the moralI to the material but he Insists as we of this nation should always insist upon the Infinite superior ity of the moral and the sordid destruc 41EV CHARLES WAOJJ1HU tlon which comes upon either the na tion or the individual It it or he becomes absorbed only In the desire to get wealth This public commendation from the president of the United States who was the author of a book that seemed lithe very antithesis of The Simple Life aroused public curiosity and Inn very short time there was a large demand for the volume Charles Wagner is a popular evan- S gelical In Paris and it seems the height of incongruity that such a work should come from such a source As Grace King says In her biographical sketch From the great metropolis and sov crelgu see of modern civilization from the worlds heart of sophistication from Paris the complex city comes this volume of little essays upon the simple life A limpid bubbling spring fresh and cool from Its forest source running down one of the boulevards would hardly appear more miraculous to the eye or more refreshing to the sense Is a noted man In Paths theXWagner l Jdn whom people stare after the streets Among the dapper and undergrown Parisians ho bulks large with his great height and massive varlIoustie mythology about his enormous ldnysical l strength and the teats sup posed to have been achieved by him In Ills peasant days For the rest he Is described as n man of singular sweets and straightforwardness of char meter with a strong personal ckarm Ho has a wide following personal as well as ethical The early career of this noteworthy man is Interesting He Is the son of a Lutheran minister of Alsace born at Wlbersvllle in the Vosgcs on Sunday morning Jan 3 1852 while his father was preaching in the village church He was only seven years old when his father died and yet he was the eldest of five children The family moved to Phalsbourg and there Charles labored In the fields and studied for the min istry lIe wns sent to Paris at four teen and took a degree at tho Sorboniic In 18C9 He was n student of theology at the University of Strasaburg during the FrancoPrussian war and there he underwent n sort of spiritual revolu tion losing his religious faith lIe road Spinoza and found in that philosopher something to compensate for what he had lost but two simple incidents led to the restoration of his religious life One was the first sight of the Alps The mountains seemed to him Gods witnesses The other event was something that has happened to nearly ev erybody simply the sight of his moth er on returning home utter a long ab sence Sue was there loyal to her duo ty doing her dally work with tranquil energy never wearied and never dis couraged nnd the very thought of her brought quietude content faith lIe went from StraHsburg to Got tirien In 1875 and from there he returned to Alsace and became assistant pastor nt the foct of Ste Odllle mountain Hlf native place had been taken Into the Prussian territory his pastor ate was within the new German frontier nnd for the first time the political change began to weigh ou him There was no sense of political oppression but a consciousness that intellectual Independence was not possible for him In the conquered provinces Ho set to work therefore to master the French language accepted a position at HeI miremont in the French Vosges and in 18S2 went to Paris where he en tered upon a successful career as aI minister and a literary man The Simple Life Is the best known of soy oral works that he has written though Youth and Courage and The Better Way are fairly well known to Ameri can readers After President Roosevelt spoke In complimentary terms of Time Simple Life such Interest in the book and Its author developed In America that Rev Mr Wagner came across the Atlantic to lecture One of the first men he ooh ed upon was President Roosevelt and concerning the visit he wrote the fol lowing for Success magazine I was particularly struck with time simplicity of the home life of the presl dent To one accustomed to viewing the pomp and ceremony which sur round the rulers of Europe there seems to bo something notable In the entire lack of ostentation In the Roose velt family I was surprised at Mr Roosevelts habit of inviting to his pri vate dining table those who are doing good work In the world quite regard less of what their power or social position may be He looks to the man him self rather than to his appurtenances and this Is a brushing away of the superfluities which is rare in men of his position In Washington I saw his boys starting to a public school and one of them did not even bother to wear a hat This of course was a email matter but it Impressed me In Europe the children of a ruler with not onetenth of the power of Mr Roosevelt do not go to school at all much less to a public school They have a corps of private tutors and rarely ven ture into tho streets except in elabo rate equipages The observance of complete sim plicity in his personal and family life by the president of the United States one of tho most powerful rulers on earth has a wholesome Influence not only upon America but also upon the world at large When ho landed In New York not long ago Rev Mr Wagner said- I love the American people 1 want ed to see them In their own country and tq know them personally To ob tail that end I learned their language and here I am He referred to the kind of English he was about to spook sayjng he had studied the English language only a r Continued on pages DEATH IN THE FLAMES Two Children Dead and Mother Will Not Live as Result of Burning- of Letcher Browns Home PATHETIC DISASTER NEAR SAMPLE Probably the most Two older children wore atschoolIt about 2 oclock in the after noon when Mrs Brown received the first knowledge of the presence of fire in the house The fiveyearold boy was pounding on the inside of the door to the living room and crying for his mother When she opened the door a mass of flames swept out The oldest child ran out of the door and thus escaped from the burning dwell ing but on the bed lay a little boy of three years and in its cradle a twomonthsold infant both asleep Unhesitatingly the mother rushed into the room picked up both children and tried to make her escape through the dining room nnd kitchen the back part of the dwelling Her clothing and that of the children was on tire the smoke and heat Choked her bnt un linchingly she pushed on passed on through the dining room Are Told How The current issue of Up To Date Farming official organ of the Amur scan Society of Equity contains the following appeal to tobacco growers inpartTo Tobacco Growers of America Elsewhere in this issue is an account or the National Tobacco Growers Convention Rend it carefully This convention hat established a price on the present crop of tobacco They have decreed that no delegate or tobacco grower represented by these delegatesI should allow a pinnd of their tobacci to be planed upon the maret at ai average price of less than 0 in Vir ginia or 8 rnKentuoky fardark tobao co and t12 for bright tobacco in Vir ginia and l2 for the Burley tobaccc grown in Kentucky Isnt it worth It Then why not get itl Remembm these are minimum prices No tobaccc should pe sold tor less Now friends it will only require R little patience a little determination a little persistency and II little cooperation to accomplish the objects of these associations Let UH consider the steps to be taken and all the while remember that there are nearly or perhaps over 20000 to cobao planters now organized The first thing to do is to make nr your mind that not a pound of your tobacco shall be placed in tho hands of the buyers at a price below the prices enumeratedThe thing to do la to go over and tell those neighbors joining farms with yours what you have decided to do and to asK tbem to do the same tiling The third thing is to keep in touch with the markets through the official society organs and to keep in touch with each other through local unions The fourth thing is to leave your tobacco pang in tne barns go to town and inform the warehouse men and the buyers tnut not a pound of your tobacco goes out of your barn until they guarantee you the prices above enumerated and then show them you mAan what you say by sticking to it Now dont imagine that this I means that you Vlll be compelled to sell your tobacco at tthose prices to the first buyer that oilers it Far from it It means that the buyer will be compelled to pay at least that mncn before he can secure a pound Dont imagine that buyers will pay no more for the high grade if they can get the low graded at those prices Finn tobacco will always bring higher prices than medium and low grade tobacco and when the low grades are high the high grades will go higher The men who attended the con yen tion were in earnest They meant all they said They intend to hang on for a just and equitable price for their crop If it were possible for every tobacco grower to be notified today that all his brother farmers would hold their tobacco until a profitable price be secured we would have the thing accomplished The quickest way to do this is to tell all your neighbors that YOU are going to hold and that 20000 other planters are going to hold CUBES STOMGliflTIlE Healthy digestion means pure- blood for the body but stomach troubles arise from carelessness in eating and stomach disorders upset tho entire and cheering the common people who have big hearts and a keen appreciation of justice John A Johnson is a Swede the son of a Swedish immigrant He worked his way up in the world and was honored by his fellow men His candidacy for the Governorship made him a political target He took his medicine like a man Finally the statement was made that ho allowed his mother to take in washing and that his father died in the poorhouse That mean lowdown story was investigated to the limit and hero is the truth of it At the age of 10 John A Johnson almost a baby left school to help his mother She did take in washing It required the united efforts of the pair to keep the wolf from the door The father wouldnot work He was a loafer Love for his wife and boy failed to move him and at last friends of the family Sent the man to the poorhouse Where he could no longer live on a woman andn child The boy kept on working Ho ran errands he did odd jobs He wore patches He carried a mans burden on his boys shoulders and never complained His one ambition then was to be able to support his mother and he did not rust until it was accomplished That story reached the eras of the voters of Minnesota As a cam Committee de dared in an editorial in the Owens ooro Messenger Friday morning that the nomination of Parker for the presidency was the must stupendous mist tke the Deuiocratio party has made since 1872 Mr Wcodson was one of the original Parker men in tile United States and had charge of Par kers campiiga in Kentucky before the State convention He says in part Tne figures show that it was not Roosevelts great personal popularity that caused the nocalled landslide but the refusal of many thousands of regular Democrats to taKe au interest in the candidacy of Judge Parker After his gold telegram to the St Louis convention the disappointing all ullge of his speech of acceptance and his failure until the last days of the campaign to make an aggressive light against the trusts and tariff protected interests Taking the country as a whole as we have heretufcre shown Rocse velt polled 4110000 votes more than McKinley received in 1000 not more than a natural increase while ParKer received 1150000 fewer votes than were cast for Bryan four years ago In nearly every state in the union thousands of Democrats stayed at Home thus giving Roosevelt an un precedented majority- If Bryan or any Suothern Democrat had been nominaed at St Louis who now doubts lie would have poll ed at least a million more votes than were cast for Parker We soy this not in criticism ot those who nominated Parker We were of them and with them Tnose who nouim ted him could nt tore see events that transpired after Ins nomination His selection then seemed wisest and best but it was the most stupendous
