New York publishers brought out very quietly a translation of The Simple Life At first the book did not attract much attention except among the literary few but among the literary few was President Roosevelt On him the little volume made such an Impression that he referred to It in one of his public ad dresses as follows Tho other day I picked up a little book called The Simple Life written by an AlsatJ n Charles Wagner and ire preached such wholesome sound doctrine that I wish it could be used as- a tract throughout our country To him the whole problem of our complex somewhat feverish modern life can be solved only by getting men and women to lead better lives lie sees that the permanence of liberty and democracy depends upon a majority of the people being steadfast In that good plain morality which as a national attribute comes only as the result of the slow and painful labor of centuries and which can be squandered in a genera tion by the thoughtless and vicious lie pfea States who was the author of a book that seemed lithe very antithesis of The Simple Life aroused public curiosity and Inn very short time there was a large demand for the volume Charles Wagner is a popular evan- S gelical In Paris and it seems the height of incongruity that such a work should come from such a source As Grace King says In her biographical sketch From the great metropolis and sov personal as well as ethical The early career of this noteworthy man is Interesting He Is the son of a Lutheran minister of Alsace born at Wlbersvllle in the Vosgcs on Sunday morning Jan 3 1852 while his father was preaching in the village church He was only seven years old when his father died and yet he was the eldest of five children The family moved to Phalsbourg and there Charles labored In the fields and studied for the min istry lIe wns sent to Paris at four teen and took a degree at tho Sorboniic In 18C9 He was n student of theology at the University of Strasaburg during the FrancoPrussian war and there he underwent n sort of spiritual revolu tion losing his religious faith lIe road Spinoza and found in that philosopher something to compensate for what he had lost but two simple incidents led to the restoration of his religious life One was the first sight of the Alps The mountains seemed to him Gods witnesses The other event was something that has happened to nearly ev erybody simply the sight of his moth er on returning home utter a long ab sence Sue was there loyal to her duo ty doing her dally work with tranquil energy never wearied and never dis couraged nnd the very thought of her brought quietude content faith lIe went from StraHsburg to Got tirien In 1875 and from there he returned to Alsace and became assistant pastor nt the foct of Ste Odllle mountain Hlf native place had been taken Into the Prussian territory his pastor ate was within the new German frontier nnd for the first time the political change began to weigh ou him There was no sense of political oppression but a consciousness that intellectual Independence was not possible for him In the conquered provinces Ho set to work therefore to master the French language accepted a position at HeI miremont in the French Vosges and in 18S2 went to Paris where he en tered upon a successful career as aI minister and a literary man The Simple Life Is the best known of soy oral works that he has written though Youth and Courage and The Better Way are fairly well known to Ameri can readers After President Roosevelt spoke In complimentary terms of Time Simple Life such Interest in the book and Its author developed In America that Rev Mr Wagner came across the Atlantic to lecture One of the first men he ooh ed upon was President Roosevelt and concerning the visit he wrote the fol lowing for Success magazine I was particularly struck with time simplicity of the home life of the presl dent To one accustomed to viewing the pomp and ceremony which sur round the rulers of Europe there seems to bo something notable In the entire lack of ostentation In the Roose velt family I was surprised at Mr Roosevelts habit of inviting to his pri vate dining table those who are doing good work In the world quite regard less of what their power or social position may be He looks to the man him self rather than to his appurtenances and this Is a brushing away of the superfluities which is rare in men of his position In Washington I saw his boys starting to a public school and one of them did not even bother to wear a hat This of course was a email matter but it Impressed me In Europe the children of a ruler with not onetenth of the power of Mr Roosevelt do not go to school at all much less to a public school They have a corps of private tutors and rarely ven ture into tho streets except in elabo rate equipages The observance of complete sim plicity in his personal and family life by the president of the United States one of tho most powerful rulers on earth has a wholesome Influence not only upon America but also upon the world at large When ho landed In New York not long ago Rev Mr Wagner said- I love the American people 1 want ed to see them In their own country and tq know them personally To ob tail that end I learned their language and here I am He referred to the kind of English he was about to spook sayjng he had studied the English language only a r Continued on pages DEATH IN THE FLAMES Two Children Dead and Mother Will Not Live as Result of Burning- of Letcher Browns Home PATHETIC DISASTER NEAR SAMPLE Probably the most pathetic disaster in the history of the county was the burning 01 Letcher Browns home near Sample iast Thursday atternonn and the suosequent loss of lite One child was burned to death in the tire another died Friday afternoon from the burns it received and Mrs Brown is so badly bnrned that her physician says she can not live The charred bones of the child which lost its life in the fire and the remains of the child which died FrI day were placed in one casKet and burled at Sample yesterday after noonThe house occupied hy Mr Brown and his family as a dwelling was about one and a fourth miles west of Sample and between the Ohio river and the LH St L railroad It was composed of three rooms two of which were built of logs When the tire occurred Mrs Brown was washing near the house and Mr Brown was at work on a county road a mile or so away ae overseer of the Stephensport distrIct The two children who were burned and another child a flveyearoM boy had been left alone in the bouse Two older children wore atschoolIt about 2 oclock in the after noon when Mrs Brown received the first knowledge of the presence of fire in the house The fiveyearold boy was pounding on the inside of the door to the living room and crying for his mother When she opened the door a mass of flames swept out The oldest child ran out of the door and thus escaped from the burning dwell ing but on the bed lay a little boy of three years and in its cradle a twomonthsold infant both asleep Unhesitatingly the mother rushed into the room picked up both children and tried to make her escape through the dining room nnd kitchen the back part of the dwelling Her clothing and that of the children was on tire the smoke and heat Choked her bnt un linchingly she pushed on passed on through the dining room and into the kitchen But here suffocated be yond human endurance she fell And the last she remembered WAS that who was tolling out of the kitchen and in to the yard And as she wentbut how she knew not she dipped the baby in to a tnb of water and then clasped it AT HARDINSBURG M E Church To Be Rmodeled Mr Hook Patents Tent Pole Items Of Interest Hardinsbnrg Ky Dee 6Spe- ciaiThe board of trustees of the M E church have decided to remodel the church early next spring A bell tower will be erected at the north west end and a room built on the south side Enough space will be out off the main building to make a large Sundayschool and class room The cost of the improvements will be about flOOO T J Hook has recently patented a tent pole It is constructed with a spring so that wnen the tent becomes wet the Increased weight will lessen the length ot the pole and thns obviate the necessity of letting out tine guy ropes Mr Hook thinks it is a very valuable invention A musical was given at the M E church South on Friday evening Dec 2 for the benefit of the church The program which was rendered by Mr Fazzard Mrs Lewis and Miss Reid wasinuoh enjoyed by a large and appreciative andiene Next Saturday there will be an ex amination conducted by Superintend ent Joel fl Pile at this place for the purpose of maKIng appointments to the Normal course of the State Col lege at Lexington Jour annual npr poimments can be trade to her breast But one other oabyoldei bnt as dear to her was left behind and as she lost consciousness she heard it crying to her to come and get It- The above is the story the mother told of her awful experience when she had regained consmousness late Thurs day evening True she told part of it soon after she escaped from the dwell- Ing but it was inooh rent and inter rupted by neartrendering cries for her child who was burned almost before her ej es- Neighbors of Mr Brown Jno Mc Joy J C Bennett AJ Bennett and others saw the burning dwelling and heard the agonizing shrieks of Mrs Brown as she escaped into the yard and they hurried to the rescue When found Mrs Brown was lying out in the yard with her baby in her arms Her back and arms wore horribly hurnedher clothes were nearly burned off ana she was unconscious The babys clothes were not afire but its little face was a mass of burnsand one ee was nearly burned out When help arrived the roof hadot yet fallen in and the neighbors could probably have saved the child left in the KIt- chen if they had Known it was there for the tire was confined to the living room and dining room The mother hnlfcnnaclous and in her agony pointed to the living and dining I readyIher other child was 10 there but no man could go there and smoke and flames kept them from noticing it in the kitchen And thus throngu a fa tal mistake of its mother the child was left to its death and the next morning its charred bones were found in the embers of the burned dwelling Dr W L Milnerof Union Star was summoned to the scone as soon as possible and attended the mother and Schild The origin of the lire is uncertain The boy who escaped said he put some wood into the stove in the living room and it is supposed he must have rake out some coalsin PO doing and have thus set fire to the wall wInch was composed of wall paper und paper sheathing and was only two fee from the stove The house and nil its con tents were totally destroyed and this only adds to the great loss of the husband who is almost crazy with grief I Mr William Brite has purchased a house and lot in Lewispwt He will remove there with his At Vanzant last Wednesday the re mains of AR Whalen one of the moat promising young teachers of the conn ly were buried Mr Whalen died on Tuesday of last week at Central City Ky Death came after only a weeks illness of pneumonia Arthur Whalen was born in this county twentyfour years AgO He se cured his education in the schools of the county and soon alter began his lifes work as n teacher He taught several terms of the Pisgah school the last trm about three years ago He was well liked by his pupils and pa trons and gave ceneral satisfaction His popularity followed him to Cen tral City where ae taught for nbont two years Two brothers W W Whalen and Chas Whaleu his mother and one sis ter of Vanzant survive Mr Whalen W Whalen who is a wellknown teacher was formerly principal of the Hardinsbnrg pull o school The Central City correspondent of the Owensboro Messenger pays a tribute to Mr Whulen in the following One of tho saddest deaths that has occntred recently in Central City was that of Mr A R Whalen one of the towns best known and deservedly popular young men He was ill only a weeKund his death came as a shook to the community He baa made Inns home here for only two years but by his many sterling qualities had endeared himself to the leople and particularly to the children over whom be had charge while assistant princi pal of the Eastside school a position which well as for his good qualities was Wm J Mattingly wno died after great suffering last Thursday Mr Mattingly was ill of consumption about a year preceding hiq death yet he worked daily at hill trade of photographer ut his gallery on Elm sheet He was about as well aa usual Thursday but suddenly in the afternoon hejjreceived a rupture of some kind in the lungs it is thought and died about an hour afterwards He was seated on a bench in front of A R Fishers drugstore when the udden illness came on It was noticed by a passerby that his condition was critical and he was carried into the rear of the drugstore where a physi cian gave him up after he had worked an hour with him He was carried to Ills home on Railroad street ana he died in a few minutes Mr Mattingly was thirtyfive years old He came to this city several years ago from Hardinsburg where he was born and reared His wife who with two little daughters survives is a daughter of Mr Thos Lewis of this city He is survived also by his rather Chas Muttingly of Harding burg one brother Hillary Mattingly of Terre Haute Ind and a sister Mrs Jno Pulliam of Louisville The funeral was conducted at 7 oclock Saturday morning from the Catholic church of which Mr Mat tingly was a consistent member Father Edwin Drury of Knottsville officiating The interment watt at St Romualds cemetery at Hardinsburg Father C Brey oQHoIatinK at the set vice at the grave CHAS MERRITT DEAD After an illness of eleven daye of pneumonia Chas T Merritt died last Friday morningat Stephensport Mr Merritt was about fortythree years of age and was engaged iu the timber business at Stephensport He leavus a wife and nine children Five brothers Cy John Willard Sand Wesley of the Stephensport neighborhood Ueo ot New Albany and one sister Mrs Lam Powers also survive The funeral was preached by Rev J T Lewis Saturday at the Baptist church of which Mr Merritt was a member The interment was at the Baaham graveyard on Sunday Mrs W R Emory Mrs JNat Tucker
