the people in the bht1Oensot with the training of the scholar and the breezy accessibility of the ranchman a man of the library and a man of the world an athlete and a thinker a soldier and a statesman a reader a writer and a maker of history with the sensibility ofa poet and the steel nerve of a roughrider one who never did or never could turn his back on a friend or an enemy A man whose merits are so great that he could win on his merits alone whose personality is so engaging that you lose sight of his merits Speech of John Hay Jackson July 0 1004 And in contrast to the above is Col Wattcrsons view of the man Hoar him From Theodore Roosevelt wo ask no quarter lord expect none He is infinitely a worse enemy of the white man and woman in the South then any of the radical leaders of the past Because not only that he entertains certain crude experimental ideas about the negro the testing of which will prove equally hurtful both to the blacks and the whites but also because perverted by the sense of being rene gad e to the Southern blood that courses in his veins there burns within him the blind intolerance of tho bigot keeping alive and warm ing the hatred of the man in the wrong Infinite harm he has done already More of the satire sort we expect r TIlE AFTE1MMT11 1JD TILE MORAL The following from the Memphis Appeal strikes us as being the right thing and tho proper way to look at the result The South ought to get away from its fool prejudices and get down to business Mr Roosevelt is going to do the right thing for the South as well as all the people The Appeal says The victory of President Roosevelt is of such a character as to stagger the country There is no trying to account for it In every election one side wins and the other side loses The Democracy has I lost and that is all there is to it The people of tho United States havo declared that they are in favor of militarism that they are ad dicted to protection that they dont care a continental about the Con stitution and that with them it is to hell with economy and civil service reformSo far as we arc concerned we can stand all of this With the ex ception of eight years the South has been living under a Republican administration over since 1800 Wo do not derive all the comforts of home and the pleasures of life from tho man who happens to be in the White House Ho is not tho Lord Bountiful from whom all blessings flow Ho does not control wind and tide Ho does not fix the price of cotton and wheat and corn He does not dispense tho sunshine or make the ram Of course tho Presidents office is the most powerful in the land and an unsafe man in that high place can cause no end of trouble If ho is a fanatic ho may bring on a race or industrial war If he is an anarchist ho may disturb society If ho has a glare in his eye that reaches his brain he may upset the financial system of the country If ho is an iconoclast he may jar the institutions of the Re public If ho is overambitious ho may usurp tho functions of other branches of the Government and be a menace to the liberties of the peopleBut under the ordinary President we are all safe in our lives and properly Wo can enjoy our usual privileges wear about the same clothes that we customarily wear eat our three meals a day havo the same protection from winters cold and summers heat read such books as we desire enjoy tho theater and meet our friends just in the old sweet way We do not imagine that because Roosevelt is elected there will be any diminution in marriage or giving in marriage Tho world is not going to como to an end There has been in the South a forceful and passionate opposition- to Mr Roosevelt This has been partially because ho has revived tactlessly or intentionallywe do not pretend to decidethe race issue But the Souths opposition has been based mainly on his surrender to the protected interests and tho trusts to his disregard of the Constitu tion and to his promotion of extravagance in administration But he is elected and it seems to us proper to say a few words to the people of tho South with regard to their attitude toward him Our own interests arc indcntifisd with the Southand wo can speak as one having a certain measure of authority Tho menace to the pros perity and welfare of this section lies in the negro question Let us bo the last to revive it The Commercial Appeal of yesterday contained a declaration of Mr Roosevelt that under no circumstances would ho accept a third term as President It is to our interest to accept that declaration as sincere The same issue of this paper brought to the people of the South the declaration from a personal friend of the President that he has seen a light as it were and that he would not make an issue of tho negro question Let us accept that declaration also as sincere and do nothing to resurrect the negro question The whites constitute twothirds of the population of the South They can easily rule this section legitimately by right of their majority- If the negro question is to be revived it must be by the Republican majority in Congress Wo all know how the sectional issue and the Bloody Shirt have affected our politics They have resulted disastrously to tho Republicans Let the onus be upon Republican Congressmen of giving new life to sectional hate If our representa tives remain quiescent Mr Roosevelt can prevent the renlis ance of that issue Why not give him a chance to prove that he is not our foe The Commercial Appeal has fought Mr Roosevelt as vigorously as it knew how Ho has been marvelously victorous Let us accept the facts and conform with the situation The transisthmian canal question has been settled Rightly or wrongly the Government is committed to the building of the Panama canal The Commercial Appeal favored the other route not from sen timental reasons but because to it all the arguments seemed to favor that route If any wrong has been done the South is not responsible and at any rate an overwhelming majority of the people have indorsed the Presidents action The Panama canal will be built The South will be tho greatest beneficiary of that big enterprise Let us drop the negro question go in for industrial development and only when war has been declared against this section meet the enemy with the best fight we can put up In tho meantime let us have peace A Good Complexion Sparkling been prolific of important lessons says UpToDate Farming Price making and market ing have been studied by the rural population as they never were belore and it bus been proven that the producer of farm products can control the marke and make and maintain prices The remaining lesson to learn is the best way to do it The American Society of Equity is not a stickler for methods It set out to prove that the farmer need not trail nlong after all other classes that no need not look from ills toilworn fields to see every body else putting prices upon the work of his hands while he alone must toil on aimlessly almost hopelessly and accept for his products whatever the buyer chose to offer We have accomplished that purpose We hnve proven that the farmer though a toiler is abreast nf other toilers that lie possesses every right that belongs to others and that from the very nature of his products food and raim ent for the race this is the vocation which mattes all other vocations pos- sIble and witnout which none of the others could be We have demonstrated that by a simple act of ordinary business he can secure these rights whichhe has so long waived in the interest of others and for himself make and secure profitable prices upon whatever he ptodnces that may be needed by his fellows or their domes tic dependents It only remains as we have said to determine the best way to do movement looking to the formation of a new party He says in part The Democratic party met with an overwhelming deleat Questions for consideration this time are what will the election teach and what of the future The defeat of Parker should not be considered a personal one He did all well an he could under the circumstances He was a victim of unfavorable conditions and mis taken party politics by socalled con servative Democrats who caused de feat in 1800 and in 1100 to the party because ot the position on the money question but dropped it entirely yet putYIsuffered Wig Democrats Lost The defeat was due to ths fact that the Democratic party attempted to be conservative in the presence of condi hone which demand radical remedies The election has opened the eyes of hundreds of thousands of honest and wellmeaning Democrats who a tew months ago favored the reorganization of the party These men now see they must either go into the Republican party or join the Democrats of the West and South into making the Democratic party positive and aggressive and progressive There must be no middle round Bryan says ne will assist those who desire to Iptit the Democratic army once mote upon a fighting basis He will assist in organizing for the campaign ot IOUs Bryan continues It does not matter so much who the nominee may be during the next three years Circumstances may bring into the arena some man especially fit ted to carry the standard He declares the party must continue to protest against the large army for the independence of the Filipino tar iff revision and must maintain a position in favor of bimetallism It can not surrender he says Its demand fur the use of both gold and silver as a standard money of the country but that the queston must remain in abeyance untii the
