says The victory of President Roosevelt is of such a character as to stagger the country There is no trying to account for it In every election one side wins and the other side loses The Democracy has I lost and that is all there is to it The people of tho United States havo declared that they are in favor of militarism that they are ad dicted to protection that they dont care a continental about the Con stitution and that with them it is to hell with economy and civil service reformSo far as we arc concerned we can stand all of this With the ex ception of eight years the South has been living theater and meet our friends just in the old sweet way We do not imagine that because Roosevelt is elected there will be any diminution in marriage or giving in marriage Tho world is not going to como to an end There has been in the South a forceful and passionate opposition- to Mr Roosevelt This has been partially because ho has revived tactlessly or intentionallywe do not pretend to decidethe race issue But the Souths opposition has been based mainly on his surrender to the protected interests and tho trusts to his disregard of the Constitu tion and to his promotion of extravagance in administration But he is elected and it seems to us proper to say a few words to the people of tho South with regard to their attitude toward him Our own interests arc indcntifisd with the Southand wo can speak as one having a certain measure of authority Tho menace to the pros perity and welfare of this section lies in the negro question Let us bo the last to revive it The Commercial Appeal of yesterday contained a declaration of Mr Roosevelt that under no circumstances would ho accept a third term as President It is to our interest to accept that declaration as sincere The same issue of this paper brought to the people of the South the declaration from a personal friend of the President that he has seen a light as it were and that he would not make an issue of tho negro question Let
