Hold Out Repairs To Askold Stopped Q CZAR ORDERS OUT HIS RESERVE OFFICERS i p Washington Aug 24Consul Gen oral Goodnow at Shanghai cabled the state department that the Chinese taotal of Shanghai through the Brit ish consul has ordered that the re pairs to the Russian cruiser Askold and the torpedoboat destroyer Gro zovol be stopped The order was made through tho British consul because of the fact that the repairs were being made by the British dock company at Shanghai St Petersburg Aug 24 With all I Russia hanging breathless on the fate of Port Arthur even such a national event as the christening of the czare vitch is robbed of much of the promi nence which would otherwise be ac corded it and St Petersburg Is dim and silent with no sign of festivity Although the fairylike grounds of the P terhot are gay with flags and deco palaceLjkscene resembles more one of a weighty International conference than that of a gathering of merrymakers The capital Is filled with sinister ru mors of Port Arthurs desperate strips The superstitious are predict ing the fall of the fortress on the day of the baptism of the czarevltch but this is easily traceable to the fact that several big Russian reverses have oc curred on Russian fete days It Is reported that a messagewas received from Lieutenant General Stoessel which was sent from Port Arthur on the night of Aug 22 by way of Chefoo saying that a desper ate assault by the Japanese had been In progress during the previous 48 hours No confirmation of this report can be had While the general staff does not conceal its anxiety the best military authorities have not aban doned the hope that General Stoessel will be able to hold out This more hopeful view is somewhat borne out by an unofficial dispatch from Llao I Yang saying that in a two days assault on Aug 19 and Aug 20 the at tackers like their predecessors were beaten off with heavy loss The situation at Llao Yang itself is quiet but tho Improving weather pre cedes the renewal of military activity It is believed that If General Kuropat kIn is contemplating a diversion in favor of Port Arthur it will not be long delayed t Conservative critics while they are not Itozel tho great Virginia evangelist who in his day was one of the best known pulpit orators In the south Sam Hazel was a very big man and had a wide reputation for physical strength In his college days he came off the field of combat usually u cir cumscribed and secluded urea of tho campus wearing the laurel of victory on many occasions and after he became a preacher stories of his phys teal prowess were spread far and near Ono lily he went to n village to hold u protracted meeting The village blacksmith who was a very big man and who was recognized especially among the tavern habitues as n pugil- Istic wonder heard about the coming of Itozel and tho villagers did not fall to tell him all they had heard about tho size of the parsons arm and the length of his legs and of the con vincing way ho had of closing an ar gument with his fists All this nettled the smith consld erably so when Rozel reached the town he sought him out and asked him to fight Rozel of course said he did not want to fight but the smith kept ou insisting and finally Rozel became angry and agreed to gratify the fel lowThey fought Rozel literally wiped up the ground with tho big man When he had pounded him until the poor vanquished bully was gasping hard Rozel picked him up and threw him over a fence Tho blacksmith had not said a word since the affray began up to this point As ho rolled over on the other side of tho fence however ho culled out Say parson kindly throw my horse over too Im going away But Rozel followed the man to his home and had him sitting on a front bench at the meeting that same night to be present It was settled beforehand that General Grunt was to bo the Republican presidential candidate The great sol dier hud maintained a calm and noble dignity through all the trying days of conflict between concrcss and Andrew c M Johnson and was now honored almost as much for his diplomacy as for hs success at arms Indeed the mantle of sweet renown left by Lincoln would seem fo have been laid upon the shoul ders of Grant and he wore it with be coming grandeur and humility Realizing that the convention would name Grant as its choice Nast pro pared a little surprise for the event He painted upon a large curtain the White House entrance with two pedestals one on each side bearing the words Republican Nominee Chicago May 20 and Democratic Nominee New York July 4 respectively On the Republican pedestal was seated the figure of Grant while Columbia stood pointing to the empty place opposite Below were the words Match Him This curtain with a blank curtain before it was suspended at the back of the convention stage At the Instant when General Grunt was announced as tho unanimous presidential choice of his party the blank curtain was lifted and the great cartoon Match Him was suddenly exposed to full view The occurrence was so unexpected that the throng was silent for a mo ment taking it In then realizing that it was a spectacular climax the picto rial expression of n universal senl ment the assembled multitude gave vent to an enthusiasm that turned the great hull Into n pandemonium of exul tation Albert BIgelow Paine In Pear sons A Vnlnnlile Scrapbook To Young men he said when you begin to paint dont choose peculiar and uncanny subjects for your pictures Some of you though despite me will choose such subjects That has been the case with all my classes- A country lad painted under me a picture of Nebuchadnezzar eating grass The picture was intended to be horrible and sad In a guunt landscape j the king nearly naked crouched i on his hands and knees He was eat fug greedily of nblg bunch of grass that he held In his left hand His as pect was bestial and insane The plc1 ture wasnt badly done but whoever looked at It laughed Another student of mine once paint tlIveruncehis face turned skyward In grateful prayer The whale was disappearing Its vast bulk was sinking into the sea A young Australian painted The Pound of Flesh In this composition t the judge and the multitude of specta l tknifetp lock Shylock was howling with wide jopen mouth and arms stretched out In an appeal for mercy and the blood was beginning to flow from his side r When this pictures disagreement with Shakespeares text was pointed out to the young Australian he said smiling indifferently that an error of that sort did not Interfere with the pictures value as a work of art Among the queer subjects that my I pupils have chosen to paint there have been lepers snakes tombstones rats itI tailors worms skeletons and surgicalkoperations Pittsburg Press r The Judge SilencedrIn the famous trial of the dean of StiAsaph Mr Erskine the great English lawyer put a question to the Jury rel ative to the meaning of their verdict Mr Justice Buller objected to its pro fpriety The counsel reiterated his ques tion and demanded an answer The judge again Interposed his authority in these emphatic words Idntyt I r know it I Mr Erskiue with equall wafjntb replied I know my duty as wellii your lordship knows your duty I stand here as the advocate of a fellow citi zen and I Will not sit down The Judge was silent and the advo sate persisted in his questions o t w
