neither of us hud ever been before stopped suddenly to say When we turn that corner you will see on the right an Elizabethan hous partly surrounded by trees with a lake or large pond showing through them and In the middle of the water a little artificial island When we turned the corner we saw precisely what he lied described and yet he had never seen or heard or rend of the place The dual brain theory falls here since neither lobe of the brain had received an Impression of the place before we turned the corner Joan Jacques Rousseau In his Con fesslons says he foresaw In a revert while taking a solitary walk all the Incidents of the happiest day of his life as they occurred eight years later- I saw myself as In an ecstasy transported Into that happy time andl occasion where my heart possessing all the happiness possible enjoyed it with Inexpressible raptures withou- thinking of anything sensual I do no remember being ever thrown Into the future with more force or an illusion 110 complete as that which I then experienced What struck me most iIn the recollection of that reverie now that It has been realized is to have found objects so exactly as I had pic tured them If ever the Story Through Which General Are CrJtlclacil Unlike other Russian soldiers the Cossacks are very intelligent In mill tary mutters and do not hesitate to criticise their generals freely among themselves They have bitter tongues and n genius for satire There is a favorite story which has been told In Cossack camps for generations It is handed down from father to son tho names being changed to fit the lUlU tary commanders of the day Freely translated it runs something like this The war god of Russia was asleep in heaven one day when he was awak ened by the confused clamor of two hosts in battle on the earth beneath He shouted to the Angel Gabriel Look out and see what my Cos sacks are doing They are fighting the Turks and Prince Potemklu is leading them Oh thats all right said the war god Hes a good man So the deity went asleep again only to be awakened by another turmoil Whats that he asked sleepily They are fighting the Turks again under Suwarow ties a fine fellow Theyll do all rightAnd so the story goes on Intermina bly around the campfire each man adding the name of his favorite com mander until at last one of them makes the Angel Gabriel mention the name ofl some general who happens to be regarded by the Cossacks as a duf fer Then the next man makes the war god reply in accents of great alarmOh my beloved Cossacks They must be perishing under that man It is time I Interfered Hasten GabrielI and bring me my long boots for I must go down at once and save them Lion sign In EiiKliinil In the middle ages the country houses of the nobility In England when the owners were absent were used as hos tels for travelers The family arms always hung in front nf the house and gave it a popular name among travel ers who called a lion gules or azure simply red or blue As these were Intimations of good cheer and enter tainment Innkeepers adopted the idea Lions have always been and are now very favorite signs In England lions white black red brown golden yellow red being the most common Probably the Red Lion originated with the batlge of John of Gaunt duke of Lancaster who married the daugh ter of Don Pedro king of Leon und Castile and who adopted the lion ram pant gules of Leon to represent his claim to the throne Under Richard and John lions became the settled arms of England and were generally used by those who could find any claim I i i TRIALS OF DIPLOMATS They Were point there can be no doubt that the office of an American diplomatist In the days of the Revolution was no holiday pastime If he was not already in Europe his Journey to his post was beset with perils graver than those of the elements In the eyes of the British law American revolutionists were simply rebels the reprobation of whoso con duct was likely to be proportionate to their prominence a hard visaged dissipated looking Jefferson Guard about 45 years old used very coarse language and ru dely pushed the child off We all got thirsty but could not Und any place free except the lagoon the children were suffering and the day only half over so after a long time we got near enough to bee a man and two women serving milkred and clear soda water warm as dishwater in unwashed and often that since they have their friends she is not needed When she leaves the room in the evening because Bessie or Mary is expecting callers when she does not share in her daughters inter est in their new frocks or new com panions when she fails to join in her sons enthusiasm over base ball or footI hull and to listen with keen interest to what this fellow said or that fellow did when she comes to the point that she can no longer be a girl with her girls or n boy with her boys she is well on the way to a con firmed case of back nuuiberltis Her condition demands heroic treat ment and her children rarely darE apply itor perhaps It does not occur I to them It is an exceptionally clear sighted ton or daughter who does not accept the mother as she is without making an effort to change her Even when the effort does come from the daughter the mother doe not always respond kindly to it For one of the symptoms of back num bentis iis resentment of criticism And it must be owned that the ex perience is not one of unmixed grati fication We all ol us like to be well thought of And for a mother who has thought pretty well of herself lot yearseven it she has not owned it to be called to order by her young daughter for a lault in pronunciation or m grammar or for the cut of her skirt or the sort of stock she wears ot the old fashioned war in which she does her hair is not the perhaps sixty years old and has IE nor the possibility of being an attractive woman Her figure is somo what inclined to redundant but this seine fleshiness does away with wrinkles and her face ig as smooth and rosy as that of a child Httr hair which is still plentiful she wears in flowing curls because she wore them like that when she first met her husband ome forty odd years ago This gives her n rather singular acpoaranoe in this day of more conventional coiffures and her dress does not make ner look leas odd For one thing she indulges in shirt waists and this is an article of attire that the middle aged woman should deny herself if she is stout He waded out only a short desling down11nrather small boys with him pulled him lout with a fishing rod This accident ShOUld put an end to the
