saidtI they had no objection to Mr Yerkes but it was the crowd that was trying to boost him and carry everything by storm In other words Mr Royalty said that the party in thisI county were getting ADDRESSES FARMERS IN THIS CITY J A Everett National President of the American Society of Equity made an interesting talk about the objects of the Society at Oeizes Hall Saturday evening to the formers and business men of this city and vicin Iity In response to many letters re ceived at Indianapolis Ind the headquarters of the Society Mr Everett came to Western Kentucky to speaK in its interest and organize I local unions Before cowing to this city Mr Everett spoke at Morganfield Dixon Henderson and Owensboro At chess places he was greeted with enthusiasm by the farrrers and the newspapers in the sections he visited devoted much space to praising the merits of the Society and urging all farmers to join it This city was Mr Everetts last speaking point In the State and the trip was the first of the kind he has made since he found ed the Society Besides being the originator and president of the Amer ican Society of Equity Mr Everett is the editor of UpToDate Farming the official paper of the Society fir Everetts Speech Mr Everett was introduced by E B Jglesby a prominent local organizer of the Society He did not speak as a fluent orator but in a plain busi nesslike manner By request he gave especial attention to the tobacco question There is no reason said Mr Everett why the farmers should not be independent against the tobacco trust When all farmers have organ ized he said it will be the greatest union in the world and organized as- a class it can do anything it wants It is wonderful to contemplate the growth of the American Society of Equity since its foundation sixteen months ago said Mr Everett It now hay 100000 members who reside in every state in the union and in Cann da also One year ago it hud about 25000 members At this rate Mr Everett predicted that it will have 000000 members by the end of 1004 Wfl are working for 1000000 mem bers said Mr Everett but 1000 000 is not the limit There are about 8000000 farmers in the country We will organize until we have 8000000 yes 10000000 members But with 1000000 we can accomplish anything we want to The plan of the Society is simple and made for business said Mr Everett There are two features the national union and the local between which there is direct communication There are no state or county organ zatlons There are no politics in it The object of farmers societies in the past was to tear down other Kinds of tbusiness to a level with the farming business The object of the American Society of Equity said Mr Everett is to build up the agricultural in dustry to make farming the best profession of all a profession which the town people will go into the country to seek The farmer has first in his possession the stud which all other classes s havent got and must have All the So ciety expects its members to do to se cure profitable prices on their products said Mr Everett is to control th market let the demand come out t the farm and seek the supply not the supply seek the demand as in the old waVeIn the old way he said the supply was damped inon the demand and covered it up making it a club with which to beat down prices and biting other classes than the farmer control and manipulate the market In speaking of the doubt expressed by some as to the farmers sticking together Mr Everett ailed that he be shown a man who would not stick to that which makes him money as ho knows the Society will eventually do Mr Everett spent several minutes in telling what the Society has al ready done for the farmers of this country About a year ago he said the ISociety told the American fur mer that Ins IDoa wheat was worth one dollar a bushel Tins was published as news through the papers of the country and attracted much at tention The object was to make the demand look for the supply and put wheat up to oue dollar while it was in the hands of the farmers This plan failed for several months but the Society kept it up and last February dollar wheat was reached To prove that tho Society through the farmers put this price on wheat Mr Everett stated that cash wheat or real wheat was live or ten cents above speculative wheat in February and the specula tors were continually trying to bear tne market This one act on the Tart of the Society was worth mill ions of dollars to the farmers of the country said Mr Everett Many farmers had held their wheat crop until the Society got tne price up to a dollar and then sold at a profit Not only this but the action of the Society andits result nowheat nod the=elfect if holding up the price on corn oats potatoes and other commodities Mr Everett said if this could be done with wheat wny could not the Society do it with tobacco Tobacco he said is the most necessary luxury in the country and if those people who use it couldnt get it for less than four thces the present prices I they would have it even then The Society is not antagonistic to the To bacco Trust he said but only wants to tell the farmers how to put their own price on their tobacco He said that the Tobacco Trust could just as well pay the farmers of Kentucky more for their tobacco because they could add the amount to the consum ers end of the transaction who would pay it In order to get his favorite luxury He paid he could not explain why the Trust does not pay the farmers of Kentucky more for their tobacco unless on the theory that corporations have no Souls The Society he said has the most ex cellent system of crop reporting in the country From the local unions re ports are sent to the national union as to the quality and size of the to bacco crop By these reports the minimum or equitable price for the whole country is fixed and sent back to each member through the official pa per At present Mr Everett said the Society will not put a price cn to bacco but will do so later When the Society has a million members and states to the Tohacco Trust its price on tobacco it will have to buy at that price or not at all Mr Ev erett denied that there is an overproduction of tobacco and stated that when the farmers put their own price on the crop the demand will readily seek the soewhenothe proper time arrives Already hesaid the agitation over the tobacco question throughout the State by the American Society of Equity and in dependent unions has had the effect lately of bringing up the prices on the crop The speaker made it clear how the and gets an imitation buying there is moneybutis beyondprice Remember these fads when buying baking po- wderROYAL BAKING POWDERABSOLUTELY PURE betterment of the farmers condition through the Society will benefit nil other kinds of legitimate business and tnat the Society IB antagonistic to none It will help to maintain the integrity of the bankers investment s- itI will enable tho physician to collect better fees ana more readily than formerlyand so on All classes said Mr Everett will help the far mers to organize when they fully un derstand the movement Mr Everett said that tho farmers should not depend too much on Con gress for relief at present but should give their attention to organizing un til they had a million members when Congress should be compelled to listen to their demands and they could get anything they wanted by reason of their great power Mr Everett spoke briefly but in a sensible way about independent or ganizatlons of tobacco growers which have sprung up all over the State in the past few weeks It is a piece of folly he said to form such organiza tions even if they cover the whole State unless they join the national union He said that the independent tobacco growers organization is much less powerful than the national anion and for this gave two reasons The independent organization is working for a profitable p ice on to bacco alone In Kentucky In this there is danger of neglect ng other crops and overdoing one crop The national organization is working for profitable crops and will not overdue any one of them Again the tobacco growers in the national organization when seeking legislation in their be half are more powerful than an in dependent organization of tobacco growersAfter Mr Everett had finished talk Ifag a number of questions were asked by some ot his audience The most important was How can a man hold his tobacco fern better price when he is not able to do soY In answer Mr Everett said that the movement pro posed by the Society might not worK out perfectly right at first because the days of miracles is past He said he expected a few farmers will have to deliver their crop at once But there are many who will not have to soil at once and these will make H better market eventually for those who cant hold at all In a short time as will he readily seen all will be able to hold their crops until the proper time to market them1 To Whom Credit Is Due To Messrs T E McGavccK and E B Oglesby local A S of E enthusiasts and organizers is credit due for Mr Everetts visit to this city Mr Everett had appointments to speak at Morgan Ald Dixon Hender son and Owensboro only When Mr Oglesby heard that Mr Everett was to be at the above cities he wrote a letter at once to Mr Everett and urgently requested him to speak in this city or at Hardinsburg while on his present trip Un last Friday after noon Mr McGavock went to Owens boro and in person added his request to that of Mr Oglesby He persisted in his efforts until he made Mr Everett believe it was his duty toconw this city After Mr Everett spoke at Owensboro Friday afternoon he was accompanied by Mr McGavock to this city on the accommodation train While in the city he was the guest of Mr and Mrs E B Oglesby He left for his home at Indianapolis on Sunday morning Continued on Page 4 + L EXCURSION HH- toFORDSVILLE LOUISVILLE and Return SATURDAY MAY 14 1904 loo the Round drawing a long deep breath after this is done and then proceeds to tighten the laces She does this caretully drawing the lower ones first and then those above the belt line Never must she make them too tight for comfort As soon as she does this she injures her figure as well as tier POLITICAL COMMENT be He Its Origin The Parker boom originated in the United States senate among true blue them under the garter on the left side and tie them there The great advantage of thus tighten ingr the corset laces every day is that the figure can tie humoured There are days when a women feels that u tight corset is more than she can bear Then she leaves the laces boo at first and araws them up later in Iloo day when she has touched the point where n little closer compression will be grateful to her I can hoar the protests of busy wo men over the time it will take to got to this trouble But iit really takes less time than one would tin nit At Hist before one is accustomed to the process it may require n few minutes more than one lure been in the habit of granting to ones toilet but as the habit grows upon ono of lacing the corsets daily it will be done more quickly and become a matter of course And even if it does take n few minutes more is not the game worth the candle When one sees theI good figures that have been evolved from shapeless forms by the use of good corsets does it not seem that little extra care is a very small price to pay for the gain The corset once on the woman must proceed to live up tg it She will findI that it helps her to keep her shoulders straight had her body erect She must learn to poise herself properly throwing liar weight on the balls of her feet and resisting the temptation to sway backwards That is n tenI denoy which grows upon woman as they advance in years and in flesh If they do not stand so straight that they lean the other wiry they letI their shoulders droop until the middle of the back is like a hump AllI about the country one may see woman in the late fifties who have hent their thoulders until they look almost as though they were deformed This could have been spared them if they had taken n little pains early in life And even an elderly woman can doI much to correct such n stoop if she is willing to give herself trouble about it To stand straight is neither to bend backwards nor to droop forwards The prominent abdomen is as unsightly I us the humped up shoulders The woman with n trend towards either should exercise herself everyday standing in front of a mirror She wise if she follows the advice of one sensible housekeeper and hangs looking glass in her kitchen where she can see herself as she steps back and forth about her work and bring herself up with around turn if she slips into say slovenly trick of car riageThe corset will give a good figure for n time but a woman must work keep it If she is too thin for Beauty the task will be simpler for her than for the woman inclined to put on flesh The latter has her work anead of her The thin woolen may lave to inks exercise as the stout one must do but she has less to carry l about with her while she is doing it j For both it is essential that exercise should be taken in doors and out The latter is vastly preferable for obvious reasons But the exercise indoors is far better than nothing One woman who would be called old if her years were
