Society of Equity ut Indianapolis Ind that this society will send organizers into the tobacco grow ing districts at once to organize the growers to demand and receive a profitable price for their 1901 crops The work will begin in Western Kentucky Four meet ings are already called at Morganficld Union Co April 16th Dixon Webster Co April 18th IJcnderson Hcnder son Co April 20 Owensboro Davicss Co Virginia North Caiolina Maryland Penn sylvania Connecticut Now York and Wisconsin aro organized The plan of this farmers society is different from any former one The American Society of Equity proposes to organize farmers to regulate marketing and thus compel the price It believes knows tho world must have what the farmers growall food and clothingsupplies It organizes the farmers and teaches them how to market their crops over tho whole year instead of dumping them soon after harvest so that other people hold and manipulate them It be lieves in farm storage rather than city storage It proposes to make thn demand seek the supply instead of the supply overwhelming the demand It knows under the oldsystem that when tho year is around all 6f the crops are at prices made by nonproducersspeculators consumedIItrusts and middlemen without any reference to cost to produce them It believes under the new system of controled marketing and price making on the farm that there will be even greater consumption because prices will be equitable to both producers and consumers and that when the year is around the granaries and storehouses will be emp ty and the indispensable goods of the farmers will have been sold at the farmers price This is not a society for tobacco growers alone but it is for every crop grown by farmers one society for all agri cultural interests It is organizing in every state in the union also in Canada It is the society that fought for dol mar wheat and won It proposes to carry on its work until every crop brings a profitable price and until the grower takes his profit first before the middlemen and trusts can touch his fine products Until farming is elevated to I1nIequality for profits with the best business in the and farmers como to tho front where they In this call to farmers to organize belongIIplaced on its importance to small cities and Therefore tho merchants are invited to building up of agriculture which means prosperity for all Merchants want farmers to gut good prices in fact farmers X cannot prosper without the merchants prosper hence their interests are mutual If the farmers and merchants join in S this movement to rescue the tobacco industry and put it on g more than its old time prosperous basis it will bo tho great v cst industrial event in the history of the localities affected 2 The Hawesville Bank CHRISTINB TKRHUNB HERRICK Author ot Cradle and Nursery First Aid to tholYounff Housokfopor Houso keeping Made Eusy What to Eat In City Tents Etc Copyright IIJ04 by Christine Terhune Herrick The American woman has evolved an outing costume that is far ahead of that worn hy the women of any other nation The English woman is devoted to sport but in the joy of this she Is so heedless of hr appearance that her dress is usually n synonym for dowd Iness The Frenchwoman cares comparatively little fir out door sports but she indulges in them because one must keep up with the times Use fulness of costume for such occasions she sacrifices to beauty and sets out to play golf and tennis in hiKh heeled shoes and unsuitable garb But the American girl goes at hur outdoor pursuits in a business like manner wnioh makes sensible dress necessary and to this adds n touch of charm that gives her costume a style of its ownThere are very few lines of athletlo exercise and wholesome sport that are closed to the gill and woman of today She onnnot afford a suit tor each one of those and she must generally com promise on something that will serve for all or nearly all of them The main part of the costume is the skirt Time was when a titled waist Iwl lo be made to go with this but even in horse bnok riding now it IB permissible to wear a shirt waist and the chief attention can be expended upon the skirtIf the girl is rational she will econ omise in some other ways and co to a good tnilor in search of the sKirt The perfection of this will make or mar her appearance and it is a mistake to save here in order to spend somewhere elseLet us consider in the tirst place what Kind of sports tho girl is likely to follow She will bicycle of course Some other out door occupations she might not have the opportunity to attempt but her wheel is something she mn tied a oluuioa to use almost anywhere So tho first thing to con eider about the skirt Is how it will answer in bicycling There was a story going the rounds in the days outdoor life mid roughing for young women were just becoming popular of a girl who went to her dressmaker to Women as Well as Men Are Made Miserable by hardly credible Primitive man a weakling in comparison to modern ma was able to conquer the huge mon sters of thousands of years ago such as the Mammoth and today they are dead forever yet the mosquito and fly have neverbeen conquered It is now time for the scientist to devise methods for kill ing the mosquito and fly so that they will go to join the mammoth and the monster lizards The mosquitoes and flies are dan gerous enemies of man because they spread contagion The mosquito often carries the germ of malaria with his bite The house fly spreads germs of disease over our food These bacterial germs ever hunting for the weak spot find a place in our blood and then we suffer from grip catarrh con sumption or malaria Dr R V Piercer chief consulting pltfsi- clan to the Invalids Hotel and Surgical Institute at Buffalo N Y says There would be no grip epidemics the germs of consumption or malaria would find no place in the human economy if the blood were pure if the lungs heart and other organs were fed on good blood Poisons should not be allowed to accumulate In the body to be safest is best to take a gentle laxative at least once a week Such a vegetable laxative as Dr Tierces Pleasant Pellets contains nothing which could harm the system For putting the blood in order and as a tissuebuilder and tonic for those weakened by coughs colds catarrh grip nothing will build one up quicker than Dr Tierces Golden Medical Discovery This is a med icine made entirely of roots and herbs without the use of alcohol Dr Pierces Medical Adviser is sent free on receipt of stamps to pay expense of mailing only Send si onecent stamps for paper covered or 31 stamps for cloth binding to Dr R V Pierce Buffalo N Y I give her Summer orders and insisted upon having at least one costume that would look well against a rock The girl of today when fitting up her outing garments must choose a skirt that will lOOK well ona wheel Such a skirt is made unlined of one of the heavy materials that will hang properly without the aid of stiffening ol any sort There are several such fabrics Not so many double faced goods are used as there were a season or so ago but the stuffs are no less attractive The length of the skirt is an important item especially if it is to be used for something besides cy cling As a general rule it is out to come about four inches from the ground The round skirt which was worn a good deal a few years ago has given way to the seven gored skirt with an inverted plait at the back and especial attention must be paid to the lit over the hips In fact the cut of the skirt must be most carefully su perintended A blunder in this will make the skirt hang awry and a droop Iin one part more than another will spoil the whole ettect of the garment Such a skirt as this if properly made will serve lor a variety of other uses besides wheeling It can be worn at golf at tennis or at basketball It is a little short for ordinary street wear xcept in very rainy weather but it is just what one wants for long rough walks or for boating It is really very little less incommoding than the bloomers or knickerbockers Iin which the Frenchwomen take their spins in the Bois and far less trouble than the overlong English skirts Even the Americans wear their out ing skirts longer than they used to do but they are still short enough to be comfortable on a wheel or the links or the tennis court With the short sKirt is worn the universal shirtwaist The material of tins is generally a matter of choice but for active sports there is nothing better than a light ilannnl which permits of ventilation and is yet warm The closely woven linen waists are not the best although the cotton cheviots which are loose and still thick answer almost as well as the flannel With either one of these it is necessary to have some warm outer garment to throw on when one is overheated and for this there is nothing tetter than the sweater Concerning the sweater one could say many things and all of them laud atory Gone are the days when it meant an ugly sort of shirt that n women could only put on by pulling it over her head thereby ruining her coiffure and making it necessary lor her to do her hair over again Now the sweater goes on like a packet and the only ugly thing about it is its name It comes in both light and heavy weights and in all colours It is knit by hOll or made by machine and although the former is the swell and expensive thing to have one is quite as comfortable in a sweater that is the product of machinery The sweater 6f either kind comes with a collar or without with sleeves or muchIless useful than the former The girl who has a sweater of any kind is in luck Her jacKet might bo injured by crushing Her sweater she may tie in n hard knot if she will and It IB none the worse or what is moro like ly she can roll it into a tight little bundle fasten it to the handle bars of her wheel and ride herself into a drenching perspiration with the calm knowledge that when she comes to the end of her run she has a little friend u to keep herfrom catching cold The sweater may not be very becoming to the over stout figure but to the slen der or medium size form it moulds itself most pleasingly and is good as well as pretty Th march of progress in attrac tiveness has not passed by the outing hat Time was when the only thing to wear for wheeling for ton nia or for anything else of the sort was a sailor hat This was a hard headpiece that almost always induced a hehdache sooner or latter As it was usually worn the sailor hat failed to shade tho eyes and was an uncomfortable thing altogether Some women wore boys caps or knockabint hats us a substitute for the sailor but of late years there have arisen outing hats that are charming as well as easy Soft felts bamboo and Manila straws that can be bent anyway so that they will not take the wind to3 much in riding a wheel or boating or fail to protect the eyis in tennis or golf are made in such becoming shapes that almost they per suade the nonathletic girl to plunge into athletic sports at once Such a hat is an indispensable part of tho outing girls equipment Thus far mention luu been made of the dress that would be used in bicy cHug anti in games When ono comes to horseback riding there must be something different Even here com mon sense has made its way and again the American woman may claim cred it for it No longer need one ride in a stiff fitted waist to match the habit skirt Such waists used to be worn regardless to the temperature and made in hot weather penance more than a pleasure Now the shirtwaist may be worn on the horse as much as on the wheel English women have followed the example of Americans in this respect and the old basque waist and the high hat have disappeared together except tor stately occasions Even in the Park smart looking wo men may be seen riding horseback in skirt waists and soft outing hats Also they may be seen wearing di vided skirts and riding astride Not so much in New York perhaps M anywhere else although even in New York the new fashion finds adherents But Boston the conservative com mends riding astride aa well as Chica go the radical All over the country the fashion is increasing and with it will come a big change in the riding habit Even where the side saddle is still used the skirt is only long enough to cover the feel well and is a great contrast to the old sweeping skirt The divided skirt must oe made with great pains and here again the good tailor is an essential If the skirt is not right it is likely to be a horror and Iit is almost better for n woman to refrain from riding alto gether than to go in a skirt so poorly made that she botn lOOKS and feels un sightlyThere is no fear that the taste for athletics is by way of rendering women careless of the daintiness of their appearance Because they dress in a fashion that makes delicate arrange ments of chiffon and tulle out of place they have not renounced pomps and neokIgear especial thtir outdoor occupations and the tailor made girl who goes in for ath letics of sorts is as fussy about her stocks and her collars and her ties as ever was her mother over jabots and Jace Tho girl who rides a wheel or plays golf or tennis has offered to her serviceable wash stomas the Ascot be- Ing the favourite as a rule These are made in plain and figured materi als in white or colours The linen collar which went almost entirely out of use for it while is in again but now it Is usually in the form of a little turn over embroidered or plain With this is worn a silk or ribbon stock All that IS demanded of the neckgear is that it Mould be simple and serviceable as well as becoming The cost of the stonks and collars and turnovers may bo great or small as the girls purso permits and her taste inclines But she can looic as well in an inexpensive stock anti in the highest priced coinfectlon of a fash ionable haberdasher B t How many feathers on
