This paper said n writer of the day was ItS full of witti cisms as one of Thnckoniys dreams nftur a light supper and as for its editors Straws and Phnzmn they are poots who eat talk and think rhyme The Picayune contained a poem ud drossed to Miss Carew written by Straws in a cozy nook In the veranda at the Lake land with his absinth be fore him and the remains of an elab orate repast about him It was then quite the fashion to write stanzas to actresses The world was not so pro sale as it is now and oven the president of the United States John Quin- Cy Adams penned graceful verses to a fair ward of Thalia One noon a few days after the opening performance several members of the company were late for rehearsal and Hnriips strode impatiently to and fro glancing at his watch and frown Ing darkly To avenge himself for the remissness of the players he roared at the stage carpenters who were con structing a balcony and to the supers who were shifting flats to the scenery room The light from an open door at the back of the stage dimly illumined the scone Overhead in the tiles was intense darkness while In front the auditorium yawned like a chasm In no wise suggestive of the brilliant trans formation at night Ugh I said Susan standing in one of the entrances It Is like playing to ghosts Fancy performing to an nudlonco of specters Perhaps the phantoms of the past really do assem ble in their old places on occasions like this Only you cant hear them applaud or laughAre ou looking for admirers among ghosts remarked Ilawkes ironically Dont she returned with a little shlvor So ladles and gentlemen you are all hore at last exclaimed Barnes inter rupting this cheerful conversation Some of you are late again today It must not happen again Go to Victors Moreaus or Miguels as much as you ploaso If you have a headache or a heartache in consequence that is your own affair but I am not to be kept waiting the next day Victors Indeed retorted the elas tie old lady As Ir Xo ono supposed Art flrtt And the rehearsal began It the audience were specters the performer moved apparently without rhyme or reason mere shadows on the dimly1 lighted stage enacting some semblance to scenes to mortal life their jests and gibes unnatural in that coniiMintlvely empty place their voices out of the semidarkness like those of spirits rehearsing nets of long ago In the evening it would all be come an amusing bright colored real ity but now the barrenness of the scenes was forcibly apparent That will do for today said the manager at the condition uf the last act Tomorrow ladies amid gentle gathering up Ills manuscripts Oh I dont know about that re turned Miss Susan with n defiant toss of the head as she moved toward the dressing room where they had left their wraps It was a small apart ment fairly bright nail cheery with here and there a portrait against the wall Above the dressing table hung n mirror diamond scratched with hlero glyphic scrawls among which could be discerned a transfixed heart spitted like a lark on an arrow timid an etch- Ing of Lady Gay Spanker with cork screw curls Ttigllonl in pencil carica ture her limbs divinely slender gyrated on her toes in reckless SusansI outward demeanor sweetly solicitousI and gently sympatnetlc tier miuu passing in rapid review over recent events dwelt not without certain satisfaction upon results True every night FUO was still forced to witness Con stances success which of Itself was wormwood and gall to susun to stand in the wings and listen to the hateful applause but the conviction that the sweets of popular favor brought not what they were expected to bring was in a way an antidote to Susans dissatisfaction A little knowledge is a dangerous thing and can sometimes be made an noying In Susans case it was n weap on sharpened with honeyed phrase and consolatory bearing for she was not blow to discover nor to avail herself of the irritating power this knowledge gave her Constances pride and reticence however made it difficult for Susan to discern when her shafts went true Moreover although harboring no suspicion of Susans dissimulation she instinctively held aloof from her and remained coldly unresponsive Perhaps in the depths of Susans past lurked something Indefinable which threw Its shadow between them an inscrutable Impediment and her inability to pene trate the young actress reserve how ever she might wound her awakened Susans resentment But she was too world wise to display her Irritation She even smiled sweetly now as con fidante to confidante and turning to her impulsively said Let me help you on with your cloak dearOut of the quiet deserted theater Isolated from external din to the busy streets where drays went thundering by and Industry manifested itself In resounding clatter was n sudden but not altogether unwelcome change to Constance Without waiting for the mnn ages who paused at the rear entrance to impress his final instructions upon a stolid looking property man she turn ed quickly Into the noisy thorough faresOn and on her restlessness led her conscious of the clangor of vehicles and voices and yet remote from them past those picturesque suggestions of the one time Spanish rulers in which the antiquary could detect evidence of rev mote oriental Infusion past the silken seductions of shops where ladles swarmed and hummed like bees Ground the luscious hive past the idlers re sorts from whence came the ratatat of clinking billiard balls and the loud er rumble of fulling tenpins In a window of one of these places a club with a reputation for exclusiveness a young man wns seated news paper in hand a cup of black coffee on a small table before him and the end of a cigar smoking on the tray where he had placed it With a yawn he had just thrown aside the paper and was reaching for the thick dark beverage his hand thin and nervous when glancing without he caught sight of the acv tress in the crowd Obeying n sudden Impulse he arose picking up his hat which lay on a chair beside him Yo order am ready in a moment Mr Mauvllle said a colored servant hurrying toward the land baron as the latter was leaving Ive changed my mind and dont want It replied the other curtly And sauntering down the steps of the club with 111 concealed Impatience he turned in the direction the young girl had taken keeping her retreating figure in view now so near her In tho crowded street he could almost touch her then ns they left the devious ways more distant but ever with his eyes bent upon her lie had almost spoken when In the throng he ap proached within arms length but something he knew not what restrain ed him and a press of people separated them Only for a moment and then ho continued the questionable pleasure of following her Had she turned she would probably have seen her pursuer but absorbed In thought she continued on her way unconscious of his presence On and on she hurried until she reached the tranquil outskirts and lingered before the gate of one of the cemeteries At the same time the land baron slacken ed his footsteps hesitating whether to advance or turn back After a moments Indecision she entered the ceme tort Her figure receding in time dIll titmice wai becoming more and more Indistinct when he started forward quickly and also passed through the gate Time annual festival of the dead following All Saints day was being ob served In the burial ground This commemoration of those who have de parted in the communion described by Tertulllan in the second century as an apostolic tradition so old was the sacrifice was celebrated with much pomp and variety In the Crescent City Women dressed in mourning bore to the tombs flowers and plants trays of Images wreaths crosses anchors of dried immortelles and artificial roses Some were accompanied by priests and acolytes with censers the former Intoning the service A solemn peace fell upon the young girl ns she entered and she seemed to leave behind her all disturbing emu tions finding refuge In the supreme tranquillity of this ancient city of the t aoaa tine wqs surrouuuea uy n nsigned grief a sorrow so dignified that it did not clash with the sweeter In fluences of nature The monotonous sound of the words of the priests har monized with the scene To many the words so mournfully intoned brought solace and surcease from sorrow Tho sisters of charity moved among the throng with grave pale faces mere shadows of their earthly elves as though they had un dergone tho first stage of the great metamorphosis which is promised The little orphan children heard and heeded no more than the butterfly which lighted upon the engraven words Dust to dust and poised gracefully as it bathed in the sunshine stretching its wings in wantonness of beauty Now Constance smiled to see the little ones playing on the steps of a mon I nent It was the tomb of a great jurist n man of dignity during his mundane existence his head crammed with those precepts which are devised for the temporal well being of that fabric sometimes termed society and again civilization The poor waifs with suppressed laughterthey dared not give full vent to their merriment with the black robed sisters not far away ran around the steps unmind ful of the inscription which might have been written by a Johnson and ns unconscious of unseemly conduct as the insects that hummed in the grass Hush whispered one of the sis ters as a funeral cortege approached The children wide eyed In awe and wonder desisted In their play It is an old man who died last night said a nun in a low voice to Constance noticing her look of inquiry The sliver crucifix shone fitfully ahead while the chanting of the priests winding in and out after the holy symbol fell upon the ear And the young girl gazed with pity as the in their glory There are many theories as to the origin of April Fools day April WAS in the old Roman reckoning the see ond month of the year but it is counted in the Julian calendar as tne fourth In many countries of Europe England France and Germany the first of April has for long been ap propriated to a facetious custom for which no very satisfactory origin has been assigned To send an unsuspect ing or ignorant person on some boot less errand is the great endeavor of the day In Scotland the unfortunate snoject of the trick Is called a gawk which has now though the words were probably at one time diffeient the meaning both of fool and ouckooand the mischievous errand sending is hunting a gawk In France the dupe is called pisson d Avril or April fish One remarkable theory traces the custom to Noah as sending out his dove on such a quest i it is also referred to in the mir acle plays representing the sending of our Savior from Annas to Caiapbas and from Pilate to Herod or to the ohangA in France in 1564 of New Years day to the first of January which left the first of April destitute of anything but a burlesque of its for mer festivities and more recently an Breckenridge News WEDNESDAY APRIL 0 1904 APPROPRIATENESS IN DRESS Part 1 BY CHRISTINB TKRHUNK HERRICK Author ot Cradle and Nursery FlrtAId to the Young Housekeeper housekeeping Made Easy What to Eat In City Tents Etc Copyright 1001 by Christine Tvrlmno Herrick Never yet was there n normal woman who did not wish to these well What dressing well means fIP determined by eaoh one for herself In the early stages It probably mean unlimited fig leaves and a little later a new pelt from this or that animal or a new style in a garment woven c the bark of trees Such simplicity has unfortunately come to an end The point has been reached where a women cannot dress ns she pleases but must please to dress like the majority of woman It is a blessed dispensation that she usually likes to be in the fashion or somewhere near it and feels it no hardship to conform n prevailing modes In fact she usually lines it Her chief difficulty is how to manage to conform when she has not enough money to do it on Appropriate dressing should be an easy matter for the woman who has a generous allowance for her wardrobe Then it is her own fault if she does not havs suitable cc stamps for every emergency Appropriate dressing is also without complications for the women who never go anywhere except to church and whose needs are sup plied by working frocks and one gown for best liven such an one doubtless thinks she has her troubles but they are nothing to those of the woman who must ao to speak serve two masters or who in other words must till more functions than those of the housekeeper and church goer and must tress for these other tnings without exceeding a comparatively small sum Such a woman finds dressing well more or less of a problem usually more rather than less To women like this the fashion of sep arate skirts Iud waists has come as a I positive boon In the days when one must have a whole gown of one ma tenaldresslng was more complex even that It Is now Every OUA whose memory goes back to these times can recall how the waists gave out before the skirts and left one wits a supply of the litter in tolerable order mid a painful dearth of the former Now when one has a skirt of which the body tart is past worthy a shirt waist can be made to take place of the outworn garment Even with this expedient it is still DO YOU GET UP WITH A LAME BACK Kidney Trouble Makes You medicines advertised as tonics con tarn large quantities of alcohol Dr Pierce guarantees that his Prescription does not contain a particle of alcohol Dr Pierces Common Sense Medical Ad tampsforing Address Dr RV Pierce Buffalo N Y It is a good thing to keep Dr Pierces Pleasant Pellets in the house One Pellet is a laxative two a mild cathartic possible for women to make mistakes in their dressing One of the chief of these they commit when they buy conspicuous clothing I am speaking now of the woman win must wear one gown a long time The striking effect may be charming at first but before the frock or the hat or the coat is half worn out the woman WhO wears it and the friends who see her wear it are tired to death of it Another blunder that women make sometimes is in buying articles of apparel which will not go together well We all Know the woman who hits bought a snuff coloured gown and a drab jacket or a darn green gown and a hat trimmed with a blue that makes a discord of tints that set the teeth on edge The woman who must enconomize on her clothing must buy things that go together well and every piece of her attire must be selected not for its beauty alone but because it will harmonize with the rest of her costumeSimple styles should also be chosen by the woman who can have only a limited wardrobe Extremes in fashion should be avoided There is the same objection to these that there is to the startling effects to which I referred a moment ago More than this such a woman should study what suits her Becanne a certain garment IOOKS well in a fashion plate or on a figure in a show window it does not follow that it will do as much on every woman One would not believe the blunders which woman will make did not one see illustrations of such breaks on every side The stout women who wear light fabrics of large and flaring patterns the slim slanky women who adopt styles with long severe linps the short dumpy figures that cut themselves in two in the middle by conspicuous belts or by a glaring contrast between the hue of the stuff of the skirt and the waist encompass ns about on every si le- the tailor is the best friend of the woman who must he economical about her clothes A tailor made gown if the style in which it is fasnioned is carefully chosen is likely to suit almost any figure Its sim plicity disarms criticism and renders it appropriate for nearly any occasion ex cept one where tull dress is squired The woman who has a tiilor made sKirt and jacket of good cut can let her fancy go a bit in the matter of Shirt waists She may have them plain dud serviceable for morning wear dressy and frilly for colling or tho theatre or small social atlairs and she way seek a compromise between the two for a waist in wear to church or to lectures And with each nnd all of them there may be worn the same skirt and no one will comment upon the persistency with which it appears so long as the waist ID what Iit should be and the skirt its lf is not startling in colour or in style Black is a boon to the woman who can afford only one or two new cos tumes a year She must buy good black in the first place and then if she takes tolerable care of it it will look well always For the women who object to black and there are such women there are dark blue dark green dark brown and the other in determinate shades or mixtures that are plentiful With one good tailor made gown of heavy weight for Winter wear another of lighter material for Spring and Fall and shirtwaists plain and dressy at discretion a woo man may feel provided for even if she goes out a good deal Ono sensible woman of my ac quaintance makes it a rule not to have more than two ordinary gowns on band at one time As soon as the first one begins to lose its original freshness she buys another end takes number one into service for second best By the time this is wholly past worthy tho second gown is ready to retreat to a more retired position and to yield the field to a new costume The only objection to this in tailor made frocks is that the jackets are likely to accumulate until there are more on hand than one can wear out So it Is as well to break the sequence by an occasional skirt All thiu is for the plain house or street dress When one comes to oven lug dress tho matter is more compli cated Even hero the separate waist comes in as a respectable makeshift I know a woman who considers herself fortunate in owning a handsome black broadcloth gown which she wears on state occasions at receptions and teas When the goes to a dinner where full dress is essential she exchanges the thicK broadcloth waist for a low necked boice of chiffon and crepe de chine but the black broadcloth skirt is still worn If she could she wonld indulge herself in u heavy silk skirt bnt as she cannot She relies upon the combination I havA described The same spirit of compromise must be practiced all through the wardrobe of the woman of slender means The woman who is able to ride in her own carriage or to summon one from a livery stable whenever she goes out to dinner or at tie theatre may treat herself to a long light wrap to throw over her dinner gown Hut she who thinKs herself lucky if she is able t I allow herself a new winter coat once in two or three years must restrain her desire for such pimps and vani ties Her cold weatner outer garment may be long but it must be dark enough to make it suitable for street wear If she chooses to follow her fancy in the matter of dainty linings well and good but the outward ap pearance of the cloak must be sober and suhaued After all one of the best aids to appropriateness of dress is found in consistency A woman does not wish to order her clothing on the principle of the tramp wbo when asked what were his needs in the line of dress repliedI kin get along without a clean shirt but Im dyin for want of a buzzom pin There is something almost ludi crously out of place in seeing a WOo man in very elaborate street dress when one knows that her home cos tame Is woefully untidy and shabby A light or dressy picture hat is not in its proper locality on the head of n woman who must wear the plainest of ready made costumes Above all it does not pay to put so much money into dress that one must neglect cer tain things which would benefit the body that the dress iid tft clothe A woman must keep well beforo she can look well If she must choose be tween a new evening gown and the means to induce her to tads outdoor exercise she makes a big mistake when she decides for the finery and lets the other thing go The body is a good deal more than raiment and there is more to a good appearance than fine clothes The woman who has trained her body and improved her complexion by athletic occupations by long walks by horse back riding by bicycling by snch games as golt and tennis and has known enough to take care of her health after she gets it is pretty likely to look well if she must dress simple Bearing this in mind she will come to the conclusion that she makes a better investment when she buys the right sort of an outing suit than when she puts money into a party gown What such an outing costume should be I will try to tell next wool A Thoughtful Man M M Austin of Winchester Ind knew what to do in the hour of need His wife had such an unusual case of stomach and liver trouble Presidents wish for a ne home for his horses has directed at tention to the present structure and the horses ponies traps and attend ants quartered there A striking feature of the Execu live MOWN is a negative oneno automo bile is sheltered there The President believes in the horse Mrs Roosevelt believes in the President and the Sec retary to the President knowing his little book finds horses good enough and fast enough for him The Presl lent has frequently thus expressed himself Thorn is no companionship in an automobile The locomotive is a great and useful machine but the horse is a faithful friend We ought not to turn our back on him The horse is all right Miss Alice Roosevel1 so the gossips say once wanted an automobile This was soon after she came to the White House She presented her request and encountered parental and president ial veto So wanting an auto was as near getting an auto as the charming young lady got The people of Wash ington generally are sorry that Miss Roosevelt wanting a steam carriage did not let one for the lady is popular being a friendtinker franc in her ways and democratic in her man ners Some women say she is very smart some say she is rather good looking and some say sue is quite plain But all who know her insist that she is very nice Wnen she goes shopping she jostles with the crowds in the stores ana deals directly with the clerks at the counter whereas many of the sweljdan es of the Capitol have the goods brought out to their carriage But our story is of the horses and not of the ladies ot ttie White House There are two opinions of Navy Background I everything discouraged threatened rider He would not be conspicuous in any group of tournament or cross country riders In Maryland or Virginia He would probably stay with them and that is enough to do The President does not ride the West Point seat that is with a very long stirrup heel lower than the toe I sine cockade of dark red dark blue and white The trousers are light colored material and are worn inside the bootleg There is nothing glitter lag in the livery The President em ploys n coachman and footman but it is only on formal occasions that the footman goes out with the team The driver and footman are colored young men it being a White House tradition that these employs shall oe black or brown In all the from Grant to McKinley they were black under the present administra tion theyare brown The Presidents favorite horses are his saddlers Wyoming and Bleistein and of these his favorite is Bleistein The President has ridden Bleisteiu about live years and the horse and rider are well acquainted Bleistein is a dark bay of strong frame ana middle size with high withers flat Hanks good grit and clean legs He is au easy horse and a good walk er He can trot a little gallop along WilY at moderato speed and is a strong and conservative jumper though ho does not take his hurdles high Ho is a bred horse of linn character and amiable disposition Lute so grips his horse with under side of the leg turns his toes ont keeping a good share of his weight in the sad die The President is fond of his horses but has the ret utatlon of being a hard rider He makes his saddle Horses run jump and work It is said under breath about the White House that too bronchitis from which his horses hava suffered this winter In due to strenuous riding Now a few facts about the general character of the Presidents horses The pair of carriage horses which draw Mrs and Miss Roosevelt on their calling and shopping tours and their afternoon drives cost the Presi dent X800 The reasons they cost so much are first norses are high second they are very well matched third because the President of the United States was the buyer They are light bays with a dun cast stand about fifteen and a half hands weigh about 1050 pounds and are kind and intelligent animals They are not especially toppy but they have style enough to save them from being ordinary lookers They are long coupled animals The chief defects in them are that they are leggy and J they do not girt well Their barrels are too slendT for coach horses and their legs are conspicuous These horses wearing
