8V 8S 1 illC a l A S E SUITS THE FARMERS During the past month over a dozen local unions of the American Society of Equity have been organized in this and adjoining counties and more are being formed every weed Among other places Ithere are local unions at Patesville Dukes and Victoria iIn Hancock county Haynesville in Thin county Shumates schoolhouse in Meade countyand McGavocks school house Hardins schoolhouse Persimmon Flat Hites Run Pisgah and Bewleyville in Breckenridge county The union at Hardins schoolhouse was organized by Messrs Richard Sapp and TE McGltvock the HitesRun union by Felix Carter and the Per simmon Flat union by Fladge Carter The other unions were organized by farmers in the respective communi ties who are continuing the work Among these are S J Baker ol Pates yule who has peen arousing interest in the movement among the farmers in the southern part of Hancock county Messrs Sapp and McGavock are also at word forming new union After a union is termed two members of the union elected by vote can go to communities otner than their ovn snd organize unions In tnls manner a perfect network of unions Is spread ing over the country and the Society although only a little over a year old is rapidly increasing its influence Each local union has a president and secretary the national union being at Indianapolis Ind J A Everitt of Indianapolis is the National Pres- Ident and L N Staats of St Jacobs Ill the National Secretary There la also a national treasurer counsel organizer statistician board of direc tore and thirtytwo vicepresidents who are scattered all over the country The official organ of the Society is Uptodate Farming published semi monthlyat Indianapolis by J A Everitt The Society has its own books circulars badges etc nearing its emblem so as to advertise it and be a notice to the world that farmers are independent faotorj in the nusl ness world- The object ot the American Society of Eqnityin brief is to secure Pro fitable Prices for all Products of the Farm Orchard and Gardento build warehouses and elevators so that farm products may be held for an advantageous price to secure equitable rates of transportation to improve highways etuin a word to make prices more equitable for farmer buyer and consumer to make the farmers position less unbearable to en title him to the rights he deserves and not at the detriment either of other two Cooperation is the plan adopt ed for securing these desired ends The purposes of the society are undoubted lv worthy and as long as it Knows no mans politics or religion which is one of its promises it will accom plish great good and not be detrimental to the farmers interests as the granges of the past have been A representative of tho News has interviewed a number of the farmers of the county and alt have expressed themselves as well pleased with the new farmers combine they have joined That the time IIB coming when farmers will have to organize and cooperate like all other classesI of workmen in order to live they cannot deny and all believe that the American Society of Equity will rapidly grow In influence and accom plish the ends for which it is several motions to strikeout J parties to the action for misjoin J der and also a special demurrer to j several paragraphs of the petition Those various motions and demurrers J were argued at length by counsel for J both sides and the case was snomltted j on these points j The fourteen indictments against the j Louisville and Evansville Mail Co j for selling liquor in violation of the J local option law in force in the j Cloverport Magisterial district were J sustained and the prosecutions die J missed except one which the Comtshs J Atty Mr Layman will appeal to J the Court to Appeals The point at J issue was whether or not the magis J terial district extended across the J river to tha Indiana shore or was I bounded by the low water mark on J the KentucKY side J In the action of F W They returned only twelve j indictments most of them being for J minor offenses They also returned a J J report stating that the county property J was kept in good condition and the prisoners in the furnishing liquor to a minor was had on Wednesday The jury brought in a verdict of acquittal- On Wednesday J T Drape was adjudged to be insane and he was ordered to be conveyed to the Lakeland asylum The prosecution against the Louis yule and Evansville Packet Co charged with suffering gaming on boat was tried Thursday The jury nnder the Instructions given brought in a verdict of not guilty The taming a common public nuisance was dismissed on demurrer Circuit Court will probably con tinue into the third week of the term Perhaps the most important case tried thus for at this term is the suit of the Breckenridge Bank vs A J Gross The trial was entered into on Friday afternoon and went to the jury on Monday afternoon The amount involved was about 1500 The case was instituted in 1897 has been tried three times and the court of appeals has passed upon it onco The Bank obtained a judgment in the two pro ceeding trials The main question involved was whether or not the Bank nad notice of the withdrawal of Gen A J Gross from the firm of Smart dt Co which firm formerly was engaged in business at Olovel ort Upon this point many of the most prominent business men of that town testified The attorneys for the Bank were R A Miller and Gen D Rr Murray and the defendant was repre sented by Col B H Young and Judge Mercer The jury after delib erating fora short time rofnrned a A Matter great political chief at the family apartments in the Arlington Hotel at Washington after an illness of nearly two months that finally drifted into typhoid fever At times he apparently recovered bu t relapses followed and left him in a condition too weak to withstand the attacks of the dread disease He was kept alive by stimu lants and ny will power for hours after hope of his recovery hall vanish ed from anxious watchers at nis bed side Death came peacefully and his last words were a pleasantry Mrs Hanna is bearing up bravely under the ordeal and shows calmness and braverySenator Marcus A Hanna had in his makeup that which compelled es teem and admiration from his politi cal opponents and many Democrats as well as Republicans mourn his death He was the best friend adviser promoter and champion of his party and his place will be Kara to fill In private life he was a klndlt and generous man and had hundreds of friends Politically Hannas death was not fortunate for Roosevelt or at least the Democrats think tto Funeral services will be held in the Senate chamber at noon today at which the President Cabinet Con gress public officials and friends will bepresentFor period in the forenoon the body will bu in state in the marble room After the services special trains over the Pennsylvania railroad will curry the body the family the friends to Cleveland where services will be held either at the home of Senator Hanna or his son Dan Hanna on Fri day It is likely that Bishop Leonard of the Northern diocese of Ohio ofI the Episcopal Church will conduct the services Protracted Meetings The Methodists and Presbyterians at DUkes are holding a union protracted meeting Rev W H Foreman pls- tor of the Metnodist church is conducting the meeting The Methodist held their second quarterly conference- at Dukes Thursday and Friday with Elder J D Walsh presiding kiev A1 Bennett of Yelvlntgon was in the city Monday en route to Patesvllle to assist Rev G B Gal loway of Fordsvllle pastor of the M E church at Patesville in conduct ing a protracted meeting Tne continued cold weather is seeping the tooacco in the country and the deliveries to the local marKets are not averaging three loads a day verdict for the Bank The suit will probablv be appealed The court sustained the demurrer in the indictments against LD Addison charging him with violating the local option law in force in the Hardlns burg magisterial district Orders in three cases were made over the tele phone to Mr Addison for whiskey and the court held that as the con tracts were made whore they were ac cepted which was at Addison it was nerofore outside of the Hardinsbnrg iistriot JAPS RUSHING THE RUSSIANS In the far eastern imbroglio the sturdy little Japs are rushing the Russians in naval battles but the Czars troops are getting the best of most of the land tights Japans naval victories over Russia during the first twc days of the war show seven of the letters best ships sunk damaged on captured Japan followed up these victories the latter part of last week by sinking several more the Czars ships ofChh ese ports and a late dispatch received in this country sends unconfirmed rumors that the Russians lost eight vessels sunk and ten captured in another engage ment at Port Arthur and that a great land battle is momentarily expected Japan has landed 19000 men at Chemulpo and both countries are massing their armies oh the Yalu river Russian cossacks have sabered several hundred Japs in land battles President Roosevelt on Thursday issued a proclamation declaring the neutrality of this Government in the RussoJapanese War and Secretary Hay hay issued an identical note to the foreign powers asking the pres ervatlon of neutrality in China which it is believed that many of them
