Wednesday afternoon between GOO and 700 people lost their lives iu the burning of the Iroquois theater at Chicago The victims were mostly women and children An electrio spark from a broken wire set the scenery on fire and Im- medIately the draught swept the flames into the auditorium The asbestos curtain failed to work and in a few minutes almost the entire theater was in a blaze Scores were Killed by the fumes and hundreds were trampled to death in the stam pede which followed Many of the exits were found to be loosed and the aisles and stairways were quickly chokedMany arrests of the theater employ es were made after the fire as a start in the investigation of the cause of the horror The great Chicago holocaust is the worst theater catastrophe known in the history of the world respected young man of this city shot himself through the left breast with a thirtyeight calibre pistol Ho was in a secondstory room at his home when the deed was committed and was fonnd in a dying condition a few minutes after the phot wits fired Dr A A Simons was summoned an 1 arrlvea several min utes before the wounded man drew his last breath The physician mndo every effort to save his life butit was impossible as the bullet had passed through the body within a few inches of the heart and had lodged in the spinal column Mr toatterfield died about 1 oclock It is believed by the family and his friends that Mr SatterQeld was tem porarily insane when ho shot himself and they can assign no direct cause for the act He hart been in poor health for sometime and this seemed to have saddened him On Tuesday lie acted strangely on several occa sions and his family thought he was not at himself He ate little at dinner Wednesday and then went upstairs to his bed room The shot rang out a few min utes later Members of the family rusned upstairs to his room He was sitting on the bed with the pistol in his baud Before he expired he told them that he was forced to commit the act Near him was found an en velope on which he had written I was forced to it God bless the family I Hove them all The news of the killing was a shocking surprise as Satterfield was known as a model young man He was self sacriYcing in the extreme for hit invalid mother and several sisters whom he resided with His brothers nd sisters are Tom and Luther Satterfleld of this city Chas of Herrin Ill Jas of Pinenlle Mrs Lizzie Jackson of California Mrs Viola Jackson and Misses Laura and Rena Sattertield of this city Mr Satterfield was about thirtysev en years of age and unmarried For several years he had baun a member of the local A O U W lodge The funeral was held from the residence at 2 oclock Friday afternoon by Rev S O Christian of the Bap tist church The A O U W lodge then tooK charge of the body and
