Wednesday afternoon between GOO and 700 people lost their lives iu the burning of the Iroquois theater at Chicago The victims were mostly women and children An electrio spark from a broken wire set the scenery on fire and Im- medIately the draught swept the flames into the auditorium The asbestos curtain failed to work and in a few minutes almost the entire theater was in a blaze Scores were Killed by the fumes and hundreds were trampled to death in the stam pede which followed Many of the exits were found to be loosed and the aisles and stairways were quickly chokedMany arrests of the theater employ es were made after the fire as a start in the investigation of the cause of the horror The great Chicago holocaust is the worst theater catastrophe known in the history of the world In the arms of the loving cruet with the curtain descending than Barnes who like the immortal Alciblades Triplet could turn his hand to almost anything became furiously engaged In painting scenery A mar ket place with a huge wagon contain ing porkers and poultry was dashed oft with a celerity that would have made a royal academician turn green with envy The Tiddly Wink Inn was BO faithfully reproduced that the painted bottles were a real temptation while on the pastoral green of a rural landscape grazed sheep so lifelike that as Hawkea observed it actually seemed they would cat the scenery all up But finally sets nnd play were alike finished nnd results demonstrated that the mnnnger was correct in his csti mntc of such n drama which became n forerunner of other pieces of this kind The Bottle Fruits of the Wine Cup Aunt Dinahs Pledge and Ten Nights In a Barroom In due time the drama was given in ime town hall after the rehearsals had been wltncfrtcd by n committee from the temperance league who reported hat time play could not but exercise n ood Influence and was entertaining withal We recommend the license to be issued aid commend the drama to all Good Templars Therefore the production ras not only well attended but play nod players were warmly 10 cclTod The town hall boasted n fairly commodious platform which now serv the purpose of n stage and note worthy CrnnslnK the Feet Physical culturlsts say that the prac tice of sitting with the legs or even the feet crossed is a bad one nnd leas more to do with cold feet than most persons imagine It has this result principally through impeding the circulation of tho blood In the leg that Is crossed over the other The femoral veins are cramped w ith the consequence that tho blood is dammed back into the feet and above the knee inducing as well as cold feet a varicose condition in the veins of time calves Another reason why the habit should be discouraged is the fact that on general physiological principles It Is healthier to tilt squarely with both feet resting upon the floor whereas with tho legs crossed the weight of the body is thrown almost wholly to one side or the other A Chllru Logic A
