societies and organizations whoso members were presented to him at the White House WTbo first was a Gorman singing society The President t began hw remarks by talking about music and followed with a t meeting was held in the Toblns port High School building which will peat several hundred A large num ber of people from all parts of Perry county and some from Breckenridge county were present At most of the sessions the building was well tilled and much interest was snown loathe discussions and talks by the farmers The talks were of value mull interest to the farmer and with un excellent musical program made all the ses sions profitable and entertaining to those who attended One of the pleas ant features of the institute was the generous hospitality extended to the visiting farmers and speakers by the good citizens of Tobmsport The in stitute was conducted by J J Wheeler of Rome Ind the county chair man The other officers of the Insti tute were D H Weatherholt Vice chairman and J 0 Ryan Secretary both of Tobl nsportIFriday Morning Session This session was opened with the song My Country Tie of Thee whlcn was followed bv the invocation by Rev Abel Powell The first subject The Pasture was assigned to Philip Smith of Prospero Mr Smith said that it is a poor busi ness to winter more lean common stock than one has pasture provided for in the spring Plenty of spring pasture be said is beneficial because poor cattle go begging in the market crowd out the better cattle and cur tail prices The pastures undoubt edly a blue grass sod and the longer it is the better Not much should be expected from an old field unless you give it something to make it produce ties A 0 Lockridge of Greenpantle Ind in speaking on The Fertility of Our Farms gave his plan for obtaining such He depends on nature as far us possible to keep up the fee tility of his farm In the fall he sows wheat and then clover in the spring He keeps his manure in a compact form to prevnt loss of strength and finishes up manuring with clover as it Is an excellent agent M bring ing fertility up through the toil roots of the common red variety having been found six and seven feet deep After blndar gots over the field the weeds arecat and his clover springs up In order to have fertile land it lis necessary to have blue grass and this he sows on his worst land One good way to get fertility of Mil is for the farmer to Keep his land in a good crop ill the time J H Gwaltney of Poseyvill came next with God Hover Crops and How to Secure Them The first Important thing ho said is to secure u good stand by having clean pure seed full of life not allowed to lie in windrow or swelled or weakened The best time to sow he said in when the earth is frozen just enough to be honeycombed early in the morning because the seed goes rolling into little holes and are covered up by the soil when it thaws An impor tant thing during wheat harvest is to cut the stubble as high as possible so as to leave plenty of mulch to feed tb clover during dry weather But the most linporat thl ng at this time Is to cut the clover blooms with the mower because clover stops grow lag when the bloom is matured and there is a period when it rests When the ono m is clipped there is oppor tunity tor more root growth which prevents heaving up If manure is not at hand good results can be obtained by mulching poor points with as to the friends of Mr Tilford along the Branch and main line of the L H and St L railroad as to little Conleys relatives Jrsse Conley Tilford was the oldest son cf J J and M K Tilford He was born March 7 1887 and died March 14 1001 of spinal affection at the age of fourteen Twelve of these years he was afflicted with that painful disease which terminated his young life From a small child he was remarkably fond of military display He delighted to see the glittering uniforms of the soldiers and iothing pleased him better than for a military man to i5ItI him in full uniform and to hear an old soldier tlllk of the battles ot his youth and those that had read it were reminded of the poem of the farmers son who Horn to wear a uniform Hear drums and sew u buttle He liked the music of the snare drum and the Grand Army men used to please ihim with music on that instrumentI For some years be was a prominent person in his handcarriage on the streets of FOr lsvllle and during theI SpanishAmerican war to please himI his father bought him a uniform on theII order of the fatigue uniform of a soldier I of the United States army at that time But this was too tame clothing for him ffor what he wanted was a full uniform like that of the commander of the Grand Army Post at FOrlsv11leo At that time young as he was he didnt ttalk like a boy but like a well informed man on the general topics of the times I He was of an even temper of mind I uud during the years I knew him I inever saw him other than in n good I humor and I never saw him relax from ithat stun dignity ofa strong and com mandingi mind To the many who stopped to speak to him as he sat in lis carriage on the public thoroughfares he answered their questions politely and always said that he thought his health was improving Months before his death he was confined to his room and though gradually growing weaker his mind was as strong as in good health To note the passing events of the day he had his bed moved to a front window where he saw all that passed and at night his notes of the days oc currences were like they had been col lected for the public press He was well posted on all public affairs and his bed was nearly covered with the latest pa persHe was tond of military paintings and portraits of inilitaiy men were taken to his room and hung on the walls where he could see them At times he would tell his visitors some interesting event and at otbers he would whistle ns merrily as a farmer at work in his field and in this manner he lived till the last moments of bis life and was conscious when tbe summons came All that medical skill fond parents and kind friends could do for him was done all of which he appeared thankful for He died on that awful night to the people of Clorerportand as he breathed Ids last the northern horizon was lit up with the glare of the burning of their beautiful little city Though little Conley as he was calledwas fourteen years old be was hardly as large as a boy of half that pge He was very emaciated and there is no doubt that his strong spirit which contended so long with his fatal disease prolonged his life for a number of years His funeral was the most impressive ever witnessed in Fordsville Conductor Tilford his father spared no means to have his little sons funeral as imposing as he had been esteemed when ordodr heartte the entrance of the Fords vllle Cemetery and near the tall monu ment of John M Johnson His gnve is marked by a beautiful monumentt BnKeith Son of Cloverport These gentlemen spared neither labor or means to make it a firstclass job of workman ship worthy of the noble young spirit baseeof the monument is from Bedford Ind The die is Vermont blue granite and the roll at the top is of Scotch red granite imported by the Messrs Keith from Scotland The cylinder or roll ronI tains but one word Tilfordwhile the die has this inscription Jesse Con ley son of J J and M E Tilford born March 7 1887 arrived here from Lenvenwortb Ind about noon last Wednesday and landea at the lower wharf Wednesday atternoon the boats brass band marched through the principal streets and that evening Capt L T Nichols the leader o the missionaries preached at the Baptist I church to u large congregation The boat remained here over Thursday services were held by those who live on it in the Presbyterian church that evening and on Friday morning the Metriddo continued its trip down the Ohio The Boat and Its People The mission boat derives its name from the Hebrew word Megiddo which means Uod is in this placeI with a band of troops The mififiion boat is a threedeck steamer J05 feet long by 40 feet wide His propeled by 250 horse power engines and lighted by acotyline gasI and heated by steam There are tilty state rooms fortyeight of which areI 0 feet by 12 feet the other two being larger These staterooms are on theI the first second and Texas decks On the second decK is a large chnpel used as a meeting and sitting room The chapel is 20 feet by HO feet with seats to accommodate the seventrnino persons on board On th i first decK are two dining rooms Each family has separate cupboards in dining room and kitchen and some families have private alning rooms The Kitchen where thirty women do their own cooKing is 16 feet bv 30 feet Back of the kitchen in the rear of the first deck Is the engine room and machin ery for doing iron and wood worK r The boiler room is in the first compartment on the lower deck In the second deck are the greater number of the staterooms On the third deck I near the stern are the steam tubs for washing clothed and the steam drying roots Here also are found the pilots room and the schoolroom for the fifteen children on board The boat la a model of convenience and economized space but the staterooms are the most attractive and neatly ap pointed apartments There are thirty families and n statetoom for each tamily but more if they have children The staterooms are arranged some thing similar to those on a regulation steamboat but every one is furnished differently in everything except theI carpets All are neatly and comfort + bly pieces that Is composed off botn sexes On board are two organs a piano und a base violin which are reed in their services Inthe chapel Capt Nichol Sermon Capt Nichols and his band held divine services in the Baptist church on last Wednesday evening At tue opening and closing of thn services the brass band played several hymns It would play one verso and then the choir composed of the missionaries wonld sing n verse accompanied by the vocation The music and singing was good and highly appreciated by the congregation which filled the church I Capt Nichols preached about andI I hour and a half The general opinion of his sermon was that it was very sensible and orthodox In rain He gave no opinions of his own but merely quoted from the Bible to prove other quotations snowing that there are no contradictions therein The main purport of his sermon it seemed was to show that unless we learn and know the Scriptures we cannot have faith that wisdom is the principal thing the tree of life Capt Nichols said that he believes the time in near at hand when men will turn their ears away from truth and he and nis followers are now out in the dying world trying to get the people back We believe he said in the old ancient gospel of Christ and believe in preaching the word of trothIIt is not a question he said If ytJ are jn line with any church or denomination but in line with Jesus His object he said In preaching his doctrine le not to 11 people out of their churches bnSAj stir up their minds and get them load holier lives You cant come Jesus he said unless you learX the Scriptures Coming to Wfclle excluding his sermon he said th ithe had personally offended any r irson in the audience by his talk that their pardon was asked Capt Nlchl Second Sermo Capt Nichols preached to a large congregation at the Presbyterian church Thursday evening The services held were of the same nature as those held at the Baptist church the preceding evening but the sermon was far different Capt Nichols quoted a number of truths from the Bible and interpreted them in a way far from orthodox He never once told anything as his own opin ion but said that It was what the Bible said For argument he quoted some other verve or chapter to prove his argument Everything bo said was very convincing in the way he told it and many thoughts of a startling nature wore put before the poeple for the first time in their lives All were impressed wltn his profound knowledge of the Bible and none could deny that what he said was not in the Holy Book according to nis interpretation- Part of Capt Nichols sermon was orthodd and does not therefore neat much notice His more startling views are given in brief He said in substance tbat wan cant live in sin all his life and then at the last minute ask for mercy and be saved Adam was no more the drat man than yon are he said to the audience To prove this statement tie quoted from that part of the Bible which iays tbat thow in Heaven are without
