opinion and Mr Ashleys are quite different I think everything was done fair and I think the judges gave the first prize to the man that deserved it for I think Mr Stewart played what would be termed old time music Im sure every piece ne played was played fifty years ago And I think if Mr Ashley could hear some of the real upto date music ho would see quite a con trast between that Mr Stewart played and what is called late music Mr Ashley was like myself play ing for the f25 but I knew when I saw Mr Stewart in Cloverport that we had all as well lay down our fiddle and bow for I had heard hint play enough to know what he could do Im perfectly satisfied myself over the contest and if they ever have another one Im going to enter for I enjoy such sport a+ well as a man coull I have hoard that they are aiming to have an old fiddlers contest at Hnrdinsbnrg and I hope they will and I hope Uncle Fuller will become reconciled over the one they gave at Cloverport and be ready for the one at Hardlnsburg if they give it and maybe he will be the successful man provided he is allowed to select some of the judges As ever yours Jonn H Elder Hnrdinsbnrg Ky Work Finished at Cannery The worn of Site For a City lu the World Constantinople looks much better from the water than It does when viewed ashore The tourist who touches at the port remains on board and sees the city only from the sell retains an entirely dlffviunt Impression from that of him who goes ashore Seen from the water Constantinople Is very beauti ful Seen from the shore It Is the apotheosis of everything that Is filthy and foul I do not suy that It Is un worthy of a visit but I do say that he who stays on board will take away a much moro picturesque Impression The site of Constantinople Is Ideal There Is probably no finer site for a city In the world It Is situate on the Bosporus between the Mediterranean and the Black seas It lies between Eu rope mid Asia for Scutari Is part of Constantinople and Scutari Is on the Asiatic shore It is cut off by natural boundaries Into municipal divisions for the Golden Horn divides Stamboul the Mohammedan from Oalata the Christian city So the Bosporus divides Scutari the Asiatic from Con stantinople the European city yet nil of these places make one great city under the general name of Constanti nople And this great city Is guarded also by nature It has the sea of Mar morn close at hand with fortifications at either end of this great water high way rendering the city unassailable by sea It has a peninsular conforma tion which also renders it properly for titled impregnable by land as well as by sea It is as If San Francisco were to have batteries of heavy artillery all around her water front from India basin to the presidio from the presidio to Lake Merced and then across the neck of the peninsula from Lake Mer ced to India basin With all these fac tors In Its favor no wonder that Con stantinople hits always been looked upon us an Ideal site for a city News WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 25 1003 GROWTH TOLD IN STATISTICSDe- velopment of the Nation in Last 100 Years a Romantic r Story A FEW INTERESTING STATISTICS The growth of the United States in the century from 1800 to 1000 in hest illustrated by figures published by the Bureau of Statistics of the Depart ment of Commerce and Labor They tell at n glance the romantic story of the development of the nation of its increase in area in population In wealth in resources agriculture in manufacturing in minerals in com merce and in education To the casual observer this remarkable century of growth told in plain matter of fact figures illustrates the unchecked ad vancement of the nation from a few millions of people skirting the Atlan tic coast to one of the great powers ot the world unequaled in wealth and resources It shows what has been accomplished by an alert progressive energetic industrious inventive con structive and Indomitable people in a period covering only a small part of the worlds history It is a record unequaled and which needs no adorn ment to add to its interest Our greatest development has been of course in the last three decades of the century In many instances figures for the first half of the century are not obtained because prior to 1850 the statistical records of the government are comparatively meager Yet they are sufficient to furnish a most Interesting basis of comparison- In 1800 onr area was only1 827844 square miles and our population 5UOS 483 In 1000 our area not including Alaska andpur insular possessions was 3025000 and onr population 70 303m In the beginning of the nineteenth century there were only 041 people to each square inilt but while our area had been more than quadrupled when the twentieth centu ry began the number of inhabitants to each square mil had increased to 2522 or a little more than four t ti mes that in 1800 There is no record of the arrival of immigrants prior to 1820 when but 8385 were admitted Compare that witn the total of 448572 in 1000 or that of almost a million in tne fiscal year which ended with June 30 last The total wealth of tho nation in 1850 when it was lint recorded was 7133780000 or 307119 for each in habitant In 1100 it had increased to the enormous sum of 04300000000 or 123580 per capita n fourfold in crease in the average wealth of each individualThe national debt in 1880 in eluding both interest bearing and non interest bearing obligations was fS2 070204 a total per head of 1503 The debt had almost been wiped out with the end of the fiscal year of 1840 when it aggregated only 3573344 or less than that of many a corporation Vt the pre ent time The debt of 1810 epresented an obligation of 21 cents saytheresI statement then there are uncommon colds colds which are dangerous i for many a fatal sickness begins with a cold If we could tell the common cold from the un common we could feel quite safe But we cant The uncommon variety is rarely then introduced the President whose address might well be entitled The American of 1H08 The Predld nt said Mr Justice Lot me first express the appreciation that all of us feel to Prof MoMusters for his exceedingly interesting address and the address showed what he oan justly claim to bethe historian of the people of the United States For what he has told us was what the people didnot mere 1r what the outward forms and ob servance were but what the life of the people was a century ago And Mr Justloe I think that the recital has left in the winds of all of us the feeling teat wliIe we No generation can ulaiiu as nil rxeBBtt for failure the fact that it is not guilty of the sins of the proceed ing generation It wasp surprise to- weI suppose it was a surprise to many of WIto realize that a hundred years ago in the days ol the fatheiz the lot of the poor deutor wan so hard It fceetaa incredible to us now that there could have been such callousness to the undworved human suffering country if he could sit in Abraham Lincolns pew und not feel the solemn sense of the associa tions borne In upon him and I wish to thank the people of this church for that reverence for the historic past for the sense of historic continuity which has made them keep thin pow unchanged and I hope it will remain unchanged in this church us long as our country endures We navn not too many monuments of the past and let us keep every little bit of associa tion with that which was highest and best of the part as a reminder to us equally of what we owe to those who have gone before and of hOW we should show our appreciation This evening I sit in this pew of Abraham Lincolns together with Abraham Lincolns private secretary who for my great good fortune now serves as Secretary of State in my Cabinet Applause If ever thera lived a President whodurlng his time uf service needed all of consolation and of strengh that he could draw from the unseen powers above him it was Abraham Lincoln and patient mighty LIncolnwho worked and suffered for the people when he hud lived for them to give his life at end If ever there was a man who practically applied what he taught in our churches it was Abraham Lincoln The other day I was reading on the suggestion Mr Hay a little speech not often quoted of his yet which seems to me one ol the most remark able that ne over made delivered right after Ins selection I think to a body of serenades ho had come if mv memory is correct from Balti moro Md and called for an address from him from tho House It is extraordinary to rend that speech and to realize that the man who had just uome successfully through a great political contest in which he felt that so mnuii was at stake for tin nation that he had no time to think whether or not anything was at stake for himself The speech is devoid of the least shade of bitterness There is not a word of unseemly triumph over those who had been defeated There is not a word of glorification of himself or in any improper sense of bin party There is an earnest appeal now that the election is over now that the civ ic strife has been completed for all decent wen who love the country to join together in service to the country and in the speech he uses a thoroughly Lincolnlike phrase when- h says I hi v Cnot willingly j hinted a thorn in the breast of any man thus trying to make clear that ho had nothing to say against any opponent no bitterness toward any opponent that all he wished was that those who opposes him should join with those who favored him in working toward a common end It would be trite to say anything about Lincoln and yet I am going to point to one thing In reading his works and speeches his addresses one Is struck by the fact that a he went higher and higher all personal bitter ness seemed to die out of him In the LincolnDouglas debates one can still catch now and then a note of personal antagonism The tuna was In the arena antI as the blows were given and taken you could see now and then that he had a feeling against his anta gonist When he became President und fatal the crisis that he had to face from that time on I do not think that you can find an expression a LlncolnsI notion to thIS cause was to treat that ho neither could nor would have feel Ing against any individual- In closing Mr Justice let me say In thanking you of this church the church so closely kindred to my own Dutch Reformed Church In thank ing you for asking me here let me say how peculiarly glad I am that In the chair sits one man a Justice of the Supreme Court and that I could be escorted hero by another man who has lust served his connection from one of the highest places in the nited States Army both of whom you Justice Hnrlan you Gen Breckenrldge both of whom had en jjed the wonderful privilege of J i1 hllt proving by their deeds the faith that was in them in the days that tried mens souls both of whom did theIr part in holding up the hands of mighty Lincoln and both of whom were born in the Stato of Lincolns birth Applause Justice Harlan then requested Sec retary Hay to speak Mr Hay spoke of his association with Mr Lincoln of the memories called up by a return to tho pew in which he so often sat beside the great President and paid n notablel tribute to the memory of the martyr After Mr Hays address the congregation arose an sang My Country Tis of Thee and In good hu mor so every toady grinned and every courtly Ilunky swore In the billings gate of that profanely eloquent period that the actress was a monstrous flue womanWith rare discretion and spirit had the latter played a queenly figure In that ribald gross gathering She had reached the scene where the actress turns upon her tormentors those noble ladles of rank and position and launch es the curse of a soul lashed beyond endurance Sweeping forward to con front her adversaries about to face them her troubled glance chanced to fall Into one of the side boxes where wore seated a certain foreign marquis somewhat notorious and a lady of Insolent patrician bearing The anticipated action was arrested for at sight of the nobleman and his companion Adrienne swayed slightly as though moved by a new overpowering emotion Only for a moment she hesitated then fixing liar blazing eyes upon the two and lifting her arm threateningly the bitter words flowed from her lips with an earnestness that thrilled the audience A pallor overspread the face of tho marquis while the lady drew back behind the draperies almost as IIf In fear At the conclusion of that effort tho walls echoed with plaudits The nctrosa stood as In a trance IIer face was pale her figure seemed changed to stone and the light went out of her eyes She fainted and fell and the curtain descended quickly The woman by a drizzly day in the Shad en go valley A mist had settled down upon the old inn lost to view was the landscape with Its varied foliage Only the immediate foreground was visible to a teamster who cane down the road the trees with dripping branches and the inn from the eaves of which water fell to time ground with depressing monotony the well with its pall for watering the horses and the log trough In whose limpid waters a number of speckled trout were swimming The driver drew up his horses before the Travel ers Friend as the place was roamed and called out imperatively Hello there No one appearing he leaned over and Impatiently rapped on the door with the heavy oak butt end of his whip Still there was no response Again he knodiisd this time louder than before and was preparing for un even more vigorous assault upon the unhospltablo entrance when the door swung buck and the landlord a tall gaunt indi vidual confronted the driver Well I heard ye he said testily Are ye coming in or in disguise A nobleman said the other with ill concealed contempt My name is SaintProsper plain Ernest Snint Prosper I was n soldier Now Im an adventurer There you Kara it all in a nutshellThe surveyed his guests figure with undisguised admiration I Well you look like a soldier he remarked You are like one of those soldiers who came over from France to help us in the Revolution This tribute being silently accepted the landlord grew voluble as his guest continued reserved Wo have our own troubles with lords too right here In Now York state he said confidentially We have our land barons descendants of the patroons and holders of thousands of acres and we have our bolters too who are making n big stand against feudalismThereupon he proceeded to present the subject In all its details to the 10- 1dlerhow the tenants were protesting against the enforcement of wheat tier now deemed unjust claims and woe demanding the abolition of permanent leaseholds how they openly resisted the collection of rents and had Inau gusted an aggressive antlrent war against tyrannical landlordism His lengthy and rambling dissertation was finally broken In upon by a rumbling on the road as of carriage wheels drawing near and the sound of voices The noise sent time bonifaco to the window and looking out ho discovered n umbering coach drawn by two heavy horses which came dashing up with a great semblance of animation for a vehicle of Its weight followed by a wagon loaded with diversified and gaudy paraphernalia Some troopers I guess commented the landlord In a tone which indicated the coning of these guests was not en tirely welcome to him Yes he add ed discontentedly theyre stage folk sure enough The wagon which contained several persons was driven into the stable yard where It was unloaded of drops and wings representing a street a forest a prison and so on while tho stagecoach with a rattle and a Jerk amid a flourish of the drivers whip stopped at the front door Springing to the ground the driver opened the door of the vehicle and at the same time two other men with their heads mufiled against the wind nnd rain leisurely descended from the top The landlord now stood at the entrance of the Inn a sour expression on ids face Certainly if the travelers had expected In him the traditional glowing coun tenance with the apostolic Injunction to use hospitality without grudging writ upon It they were doomed to dis appointmentA skirts and there emerged from the interior of the coach first a little dried up old lady whose feet were Inclosed in prunella boots with Indian embroidered moccasins for outside protection second a young woman who hastily made her way into tho hostelry displaying a trim pair of ankles third a lady resembling the second and who the landlord afterward learned was her sister fourth n graceful girl above me dlum height wearing one of those pro yoking quilted silk moods of the day with cherry colored lining known as kiss me If you stead of protruding elegantly n good three or even four Inches their glory had gone and they lay ignominiously flattened upon the bosom of the wearer A white choker rivaled In hue the toothpick collar of the melancholy individual The taverns stable boy immediately began to remove the trunks into the main hallway This overgrown husky lad evidently did not share his employ ers disapproval of tho that tender consideration for others which belongs to humanity for she turned to smiletremoving from his shoulders the wet Petersham overcoat and placing it on a chair regarded him with a look of filial anxiety Yet their appearance be lied the assumption of such relation ship lie was hearty florid and sturdy of English type while she seemed a daughter of tile south a figure more fitting for who in a largo voice remarked- A haven at last Arc you the land lordYes maam testily replied that per sonI am pleased to meet you sir exclaimed the melancholy individual as he extended a hand so cold
