received by the rhF venous candidates will be made by the State Election Commission on Mon day November 23 That is the day fixed bY the present election law of the State for the official tabulation of returns and issuing of certificates The official count of the vte in each coun ty was begun last Friday by the county Election Boards but was not comple ted Revised returns give Beckham an approximate majority of 27252 in the State election Revised returns in other states ahow that Massachusetts went about 85000 Republican Maryland 7000 Democratic Penn sylvania 224000 Republican Nebraska 10000 including a number of the young men of this place LAW BREAKERS STILL ABROAD Speck Beavin and Hovious Drown Held Over to Grand Jury For Assault INCENDIARY AT TOBINSPORT Barney Bohler was assaulted last Wednesday night about 10 oclock near Tom Bohlera shop bySpeck Beaviu and Hovious Brown colored their In tention being he thinks to ron him He had some money on his person but they did not get this as his cries for help frightened them away before they had time to secure it A little after 10 oclock Bohler left his shoe shop on Elm street and started down Main street on nil way home in the lower end of town As he turn ed around Hammans corner he heard two men following him When he had gone about half a block the men who were Speck Beavin and Hovious Brown grubbed at his cane and when he asked them what they wanted they said they wanted to Kill him He told them to quit following him and they dropped back a little They continued however to follow him and when he turned around Halls corner and got opposite Tom Bohlers blacksmith shop they knocked him in the head four times and wrencned his cane from his hand He atijnggled with them for a while but when he was felled to the ground he cried out that he was being murdered While he was down they searched in his pockets he says but before they got his money a light appeared in the doorway of a nearby house and they fled Bohlers head wan badly bruised and his back was hurt The examining trial of Brown was held Friday before Judge WillisBrown was arrested by marshal Willis on the charge of assault and battery with intent to rob and was tried before Judge Will Friday night The charge was then changeds- hadto assault and buttery and Brown a second trial Saturday morning when his bond was fixed at 100 He failed to give bond and was taken to Hardlnsburg Saturday afternoon by Marshal Willis and committed to the county jail Beavin gave himself up Friday night when he learned that the charge had been changed and he was tried Saturday morning and his bond placed at 100 which was given Another Incendiary Fire A barn and contents belonging toWIl lIam Suddartb who lives in the lower part of Tooius bottom in Perry county Ind was burned last Thursday night after 10 oclock The barn was destroyed before the family knew of the fire Besides other valuable prop erty two fine horses were burned It Is thought that the work was thatof an incendiary as no fire was left in the barn when the family retired The bloodhoundbolonging to the tar more of Tobmsport was sent for the next morning to hunt the miscreant who fired the barn It is the first in cendiary fire in Toblnsport since the farmers organized a league for their protection and bought a bloodhound Previous to the farming of the league there were five or six flresin succession and all it was thought were the wont of incendlarya The hound when put on the scent went to the home of Geo MoFalls John Robinson who Is under Indictment for several ugly crimes was making his home with MoFalls Kobin son was arrested and taken to jail but no warrant waS sworn out for the arrest of MoFalls It Is believed that either MoFalls or Robinson tired the barn Using Webster Stone Hardinsburg Ky Nov 10Spe- cialTne County Board of Election Commissioners convened at the court house in the county court clerks office on Friday morning last for the pur pose of counting the votes and issuing certificates of the successful candidates The Board is composed of the follow ing persons Frank P Payne who by virtue of his office is chairman Jesse Wnitwortb secretary and John P Haswell Jr Edward Dillon the deputy county clerk was made secre taryDuring the progress of the count it was discovered that there were forty eight rejected ballots locked np in the ballot boxes of various precincts Morris Eakridge as attorney for W S Ball appeared before the Board and tiled an affidavit and moved that the election officers of those precincts be summoned to appear and unlock the ballot boxes and remove the rejected ballots so that they might be canvass ed Mercer Mercer and Moorman as attorneys for Moore objected to this motion claiming that the Board had no authority to make such an or der The position of the Board was that they did not have the power to compel the election officers to open the ballot boxes but that if an oraer was obtained from the circuit judge to open the ballot taxes and canvass the rejected ballots they would com ply with such order Mr Ball de dined to do this as he did not wish to appear before the people as contest Ing the election and thereupon SirSome time ago I saw a copy of the News the first I have seen since 1880 Hhen I left the old Blue Grass state and it caused me to think of old times when I used to live back there So many names I saw in the News that I had almost forgotten yet they were so familiar to me I have been away more than five years I first went to Brazil and I was there almost two years I started into railroading there and worked about six months and left the road for about one year and then went to KanviUe Illinois and got a job as fireman for the Chicago and Eastern Illinois R R I was with them almost two give another article and tell ot eomo of the advantages of i this part of the country f It will be remembered that this part of Oklahoma was cut off the Indian reservation some ten years ago by Un ole Sam and was given away in tracts of ICO acres or a quarter section and each tract was raced for and given to the lucky one who might be first I to set a flag on the piece of his choice whether they be male or female The f majority of these lucky ones after the race found themselves with a farm and nothing with which to operate or even make the least needed Improvements and this of itself was a great barrier in the way of progress and has not yet been entirely over come bo I will first speak of some of the disadvantages tbe farmer must labor under and toll of the city life later on i In this article I shall confine myself strictly to Noble county as this is the only county that I went over suffi ciently to describe While I passed through many others I did not stop to prospect yet I learn there are coun ties in Oklahoma that are more de sirable than Noble In my judgment the land is destined to become impoverished and it is a question of only a few years when it will be so if the present mode of farming is kept op The land ia a red sandstone soil and bign rolling prairie which makes It one of the worst dronth resisting soils we have This coupled with the hot wind that prevails in the months of July and August makes it impossible to raise many crops that grow well further east Indian corn for Instance cannot be grown to profit except along the water courses and then the yield is comparatively light Red clover timothy red top and blue grass which is o common in Kenli Kyhave no part nor lot on the land of an Okla homa Inrmer and never will as they cannot withstand the hot suns of the first summer after sowing With these prevailing hinderances the average farmer is compelled to grow wheat and oats year after year f or possibly here and there you find a man with a few acres of cotton So with the eye of an uptodate farmer of the central states it is not a nard matter to see an impoverished soil and that before many years Some of tho best farmers there have grown alfalfa to success and some few have even grown the noja bean and the cow pea out this is oy no means common Wheat in Oklahoma Is like king cot ton in the south The people rely on it as their only money crop While out in the fields on u Noble county farm I stood still in my tracks and a bout the city In Perry wages are wMi I oo ttm1gotta a ul t to JM Whiwi nosily averages about twelve or tttteeo bushels an aura and sold tail year at 55c IB the month ot JulyTle quality of tbe Oklahoma wheat ia good and ranch of It is used for export purposes A mill In the city of Perry not only exports wheat direct to Liverpool but grinds a great deal of It Into flour which is sold under contract to parties in Liverpool and London and never through the hands of a middle man But tnis will suffice along this line lest I worry your patience The nut great disadvantage I would mention is the scarcity of timber Fence posts black jacksell for 18 and 20c and will not measure more than 5 ft 6 in in length and are not larger than a common fence rail I saw a gentleman who hauled a load of such posts a distance of eighteen miles and paid that price Wood for fuel Is haul ed from five to twentyfive miles The blacK locust is being planted ex tensively by a few farmers which in the course of a few years will aid greatly in the way of fencing Coal may be had at any of the railway stations at f8 a ton which is about 35 cents a busnel The last disadvantage I would men tion but not least is the high rate of interest the farmers have to pay A gentleman told me he could lend all the money he could get at 18 per cent on cbattle surety though I think the banks lend it for some less yet 12 per cent Is counted a very low rate This coupled with the low price of wheat makes toe farmer have more than one hard row to hoe Yet wltn all these difficulties many of the early settlers have pulled through and are today In a good and prosperous condition while others nave been unfortunate made miserable failures and long since returned to the land from whence they came 5ome Advantages The land being high rolling prairie as I have stated witn plenty of pure water which may be had from wellj the mild climate and moderately warm winters make this one of the most healthful places in the west I saw but one graveyard while there and some one said they had to shoot a man to start that Though I cannot vouch for the truth of this statement yet I can say the people look strong robust and in the best of health So as health Is to be praised above all things else the people of Oklahoma surely have a boon in that And again I think it la one of the best locations for fruit in my knowl edge Apples pears peaches plums cherries and prunes All grow to per fection here and seldom ever fall Strawberries and other small fruits can be equally well grown as the peach or plum and the Inviting fields only wait development by a skillful hand And everyone who may engage in fruit growing should be careful to
