Charles Sipes Thursday Nights Contest The contest Thursday night opened with a talk by Chas E Lightfoot who stated that the judges were scat tered over the house and were unknown to the audience He requested that the audience keep quiet during the playing so that the judges could tear the music well and be given a fair chance to make their decisions Following Mr Lightfoota talk was a number of selections on the i pianola by O T Skillman who is an expert operator of this machine The pianola played a number of se lections during the evenings enter tainment and Mr Skillmana still in handling the pianoplayer was com plimented by land applause The old fiddlers were seated near the stage and one fiddler was on the stage at a time Each man was given fifteen minutes to play and the selec tion of his own piece Argatbright county Mr Argabright played The Girl I Left Behind Me Weevily Wheat Dixie Love Among the Roses and Rye Straw He had an odd way of ending each piece that elicited much pieces correctly and gave much pleasure to the audience When Mr Elders time was up the judges retired and on returning an nounced that MrStewart was the best oldtime fiddler of the evening The loud applause following the decision showed that the audience agreed with it During the evenings performance- a number left but this was on ac count of the excessive heat of the room Several hundred seats were full and the available standing room Friday Nights Contest Friday night there was ti contest between the new fiddlers and then one between the best fiddler of Thursday night and the best fiddler of Fri day night W B Oelze operated the pianola on this evening us Mr Skillman could not be present Chas Lghtfoot introduced the fiddlers as he did on Thursday night All of them were home men and needed little in troduction Mr Lightfoot referring to each as one of our old citizens Each man was allowed twenty minutes and the choice of his pieces Chas Furrow came upon the stage first amidst a wave of applause He played Cauliflower Flower of Edin barghHaste to the Wedding Wagoner A New Married Lady Shippingport Betty Hayes in F and Devils Dream His notes were very clear and pleasing- to the ear His playing is more fully described under head of Difficulty- of Decisions Price Graham the next fiddler itartea off with Bill Cole He then charmed his audience with Dixie with variations A Scolding Wife Gray Eagle Money Musk Leather Breaches and Wagoner His Scolding Wife was simply fine being alternately soft and shrillllke the title piece He was fine with the short bow Owing to the regularity sweetness and soft tone of his music ho was a close contestant for the third prize HILI music was truly good and thorou jhly enjoyable Mr Lightfoot in Introducing Jas W Johnson who came next said that he bad played all over Cowheel forI the last twentyfive years Mr John ions playing probably worked on the motions of those present more than that of any other fiddler He played some set the I 4 audience wild When Mr Johnson had finished the judges retired to decide who was the best fiddler of thd second night They conferred this nonor upon Chas Furrow and suggested that he and Mr Stewart should be given forty minutes that both be seated upon Ute stage and play alternately the pieces of their own choice the best player of the two to receive the first prize This was accordingly done Then the fun began in earnest At the outset Mr Furrow with tne permission of the audience threw off his coat and botn got down to busi ness The audience cheered and the fun had begun Everyoody was in terested and leaned forward eager to hear every note Those present wore mostly nome people but no partiality in words of praise and encouragement were shown Mr Furrow over Mr Stewart Cloverport people dont do that way they are too generous Mr Stewart led off with Money Musk then Mr Furrow followed with Forked Deer Then from Stewart came Devils Dream and from Furrow Flshers Horn Pipe Then Wagoner in B fiat Natchez Under the Hill Ladies in the Ball Plckaway Straw Bonnet in different key from that played by Joe Stewart Arkansaw Traveler and Jenny Lind The forty minutes were up and the interest of the audience was at its highest point The judges retired Mr Lightfoot read the decision It stated that in their judgment Mr Stewart was the best fiddler and en titled to the first prize of f2il They also decided that the second and third prizes of feach should be given to Mr Chas Furrow and Mr Jonh Ball The decisions were applauded to the echo and many in the audience went for ward to congratulate the successful contestantsDifficulty of Decisions The judges in making their decisions took every point into consideration age ot music manner of playingnian ner of holding bow and violin etc They admitted that it was a very difficult question to decide between Stewart and Furrow Both were ex perts in handling the bow Furrows playing was excellent time regular notes clear but he made a few minor errors Stewart gained over Furrow not in tone but Incorrectness of notes While Stewart was a little fast ale notes were all correct as far as the judges could discern The contest between Mr Ball and Mr Graham was very close the judg es say and it was with difficulty that they decided which was the bet ter fiddler Betides the three prizes given to Messrs Stewart Furrow and Ball 1 each was given to Tbos Etherton and Jas Johnson Their playing was more quaint than that of any of the other fiddlers and furnished the greater part of the real amusement for the audience As To Its Success The Lives on a Shanty Boat and Has a Pet Spider NOW IN CITY ON BUSINESS Lives on a shantyboat is worth thousands of dollars has a huge pet spider has had a varied and long ex- perIence us a riveruian The story of Millard F Brown while familiar perhaps to a few is unknown to many people In this city and county Although this mans home was once only a few milo from this city and although he is now living on a shanty bOlt on the Ohio river just below this city little Is known to the gen eral public of his life and eccentric ities While his case is not of an ox traordinary nature it is one among a thousand and will probably be of interest to the readers of the News A representative of the News paid Mr Brown a visit In nis shantyboat one day last week and had an hours pleasant conversation with him during which he learned much about his life as a riveruian and some of his eccen tricities Mr Brown has acquired the larger part of his education from experience and in conversation im presses ono with Ins simple and yet instructive expressions When he tells u story he throws his whole soul in to his words and his face beams with pleasure at the telling Mr Brown has had an experience as varied perhaps as that of any rtv erman in the couutry He is an adept in two trades that of boat carpenter and shipyard carpenter and he has served at various times as mate car penter and watchman on a large number of boats He has also spent sever al years railroading and in this way came into possession of the small fortune at his command In 1872 he i saw his first service on the Ohio river as fireman on the Samorr one of the American Cannel Coal Companys boats at which time he was learn ing the engineers trade For nearly n score of years after this he boated out of Cairo illon the towboats of differ ent companies For a long time he was watchman on the old Chas Brown which was towing coal out of St LouisI then carpenter on the Harry Brown which belongs to the same company After tnis he served on the Mississippi Valley Transporta tion Lines boats part of the time as watchman and part as second mate At one time he was mate of the Jennie Campbell of the Barrett line which was towing around Cincinnati and litter mate on the Jack Frost which towed logs for a firm in St Louis After this he w as mute on the Louis Hook which was towing railroad ties out of St Louts When he left the L aU Hick hi was employed on tie Hnntiugtou St Louis towboats omm thm the Jaax Heathuigtou Friable and Wash Shonsell The last towboat Mr Brown served on was the T H Davis which plied the Tennessee river In lUO and towed ties trom Waterloo near the source of the stream Besides serving on the towboats of private companies he was employed several years on Government beats towing conk for river Improvements Among these were the Emma Ethridge Minnie Tonka and the VidetteMr was never employed on packets and hiring the summer months whIm the large towboats could not run he would put in his time railroading At one time he worked for the Big Four as bridge carpenter and in 18U2 received timber for the Cotton Bolt Route which was a good paying position While working for the Dig Four he was badlyI hurt by some falling timbers while work ing with his crew He was laid up for two months and then brought suit against the railroad for damages This was in November 1880 and in 1800 he won his suit and received 17500 damages Last spring he sold his farm near Tobinsport Ind to Dan Parish formerly of this city for fl600 Mr Brown has been very saving with his money but strange to say no one knows where it is and he wont tell them either Although having sufficient money to build him a com fortable home and live in comfort the rest of his life be choosey to live all alone on a small shanty boat And this is one of his eccentricities An other ia his pot spider which he calls Frank He think as much of Frank as you or I would thinkof a pet cat or dog Frank is one of the P l largest spiders of hie kind found in this part of the country When Frank is in a good humor his master lhats him go where he pleases over the furniture of the room and over his hands and arms When Frank is in this mood Mr Brown gently strokes him on the back and things FranK is a tine fellow When Frank is In a bad way Mr Brown makes him run away Into his hiding place One of Franks favorite pastimes Is killing flies aud Mr Brown prides himself on the number he can kill In a day He has no use for screens and fly paper when Frank is at home Mr Browns father and mother Mr and Mrs Crawford Brown are both dead and he is now having JE Keith Son of this city erect a handsome monument at their grave He has a sister Iliving near Tobinsport who is his only near relative in this part of thA country He intends to go on his shantyboat in a few weeks to Padu cah to get WOM on a to wboat This life suits him best he says and he wants to return to it Before going he has some business in this city to attend to and several
