newspapers announce spurthat in a recent speech you were pleased to ineer at my conduct ats ag the battle of Fort Donelson more1 yothan fortyone years ago Tiie provo cation which seems to haf6 elicited this expression of your Indignation rvr appears to have been some remarks of mine addressed a short time ago to the citizens of my county whose voters of all parties you sought four Ayears ago to disfranchise My remarks were purely historical in character Thsy were intended to show the ill effects upon a free gov ernment of the usurpations of a political machine absorbing nil the powers of the State parceling out among its members the different offices of government denying to the people the nght of free choice in the select rtramplingrmen I think my statements were fully established by the evidence of your own avowed supporters- I do not understand that you have called in question tine correctness of Ieanyof these allegations but you rise = in your majesty to annihilate the tea allegator by the supreme logic of a gubernatorial sneer I This courteous notice which you have been pleased to give me demands a tilting ncsnowl dgement The oct of which you disapprove was a public act and therefore like ynpr own public acts is a tit sub V ject of comment Rut there are several essentials requisite to form a just criticism In the first place the critic must kuow something of the subject he is talking about Then his mind must bn free from prejudice and not irritatedi by passion or wounded vanity But above all his judgment must be so tralnea that it is capable of reaching just conclusions from established pre mises How far you may be wanting in these requisites a discerning pnbii c must judge- Concerning the Surrender of Fort Danelson The facts In relation to the action t which you criticize are recorded in the arhlves of the country and can m be changed either by my asser dons or by any novel form of logic employed by you Briefly stated they are these Of the three senior officers at Fort Donelson I was tne junior in rank and subject therefore to the orders of my seniors I urgently advised against placing ourselves within the light entrenchments to be invested and counseled operations outside the works My seniors overruled me as they had a right to do We were completely invested as might have been foreseen and after several days of combats a council of war 1severewas held I then urged a sortie of the garrison as the only remedy left My advise was adopted The sortie was made and was completely success ful My division was Jar beyond tile entrenchments in position to cover the withdrawal of the whole army through the open country behind it when to my amazement I received an order first from one of my superiors and then from the senior commander to return to my former position with in the lines Against this I earnestly protested as meaning the loss of the army But the commander reiter ated his order and I had only to obey 1 returned a distance of three miles to find that a portion of my works had been occupied by the ene my in my absence and it was only r after a severe combat that I held an unfortified line within the works tc At a subsequent council of war it was the unanimous opinion that the con ditions were so desperate that a ca pitulation of the army was an absolute necessity to avoid a needless massa rere by an overwhelmingly superior t forceAfter this determination my two l senior commanders against whose i patriotism and gallantry I have no word to utter thought fit to effect theirs escape on a steamer lying at the wharf taking with them such troops t as could be embarked leaving to me the execution of a painful duty which they had pronounced n necessity The same avennd of escape was open to me but considered it my 1imper- ative duty to taste of the mIsfortunes as I had shared the hardships and dang ers of my gallant comrades The Con federate States government which il might be thought was an Interested party in there transactions saw fit to retire my two seniors from all active duty and to promote me to a higher grade or what they supposed was my proper action on that occasion You evidently dissent from their judgment If your infantile prat thugs could have reached the ears of the Confederate authorities they might perhaps have saved them from the commission of this error Bnt unfortunately yon were not then born nor had flaming comet or other miraculous message informed the world of your approaching advent and the wisdom which would then enlighten- It The Value of the Governors Criticism Your military criticism might nave been more authoritative if it had been fortified by some experience in warfare You might readily be par doned for not taking part in a war which had closed before you were born but after you had attained your May of youth and bloom of Ins iihood with no domestic ties to bind you to your hearthstone your country appealed to her sons to enroll them selves under her banners and to defend her honor against a foreign foe Your competitor promptly responded to the call but no answering echo came from you While he was engaged in extending the area of free government inroad you were associated with a hand of machine politicians who were seoking to restiict It at home Instead of stepping forward to render patriotic service to your country you seem to have found it a more congenial em ployment to criticize those win Ud- And by this style of criticism you are waging what you call an aggressive campaignIndeed the stumps of the State are groaning under the oppressive weight- of your machine orators who may bp seen with oscillating forms und arms md legs swinging with a violence that threatens dislocation while from the distorted features that adorn the center of these gyrations there issues a stentorian voic- eBeuftingfncts by strength of lung And slaying foes with venomed ton gueII The picture if not sublime is at least picturesque It would be a I musing if we did not know that under cover of these oratorical gymnastics there lurks a sinister design It- Is the custom of the juggler when Lie wishes to perform his slight of land tricks to direct the eyes of the spectators to some secondary object BO that under cover of their distracted attention he may execute hie most astounding feats In like manner wade the spectators are amazed at the fantastic gymnastics of the stump jugglers the machine is quietly at work forging tho political fetters which are to bind them like slaves to the car of their masters- It was Tony Lurnpirin who said that while he could read the superscription on his letter he could not decipher the contents though as he sagely remarked he believed that the inside of the letter is the nream of the correspondence Democracy and Its Executioners The car of your machine is labeled ill over Democracy Wnat is withI In Y What sort of Democratic cream does it enclose Lifting the painted veil which hides the contents we see within only the grinning skeleton of the stately form of Democracy sour rounded by its executioners the Goebel election law time Music Ball convention tho campaign of the voters of the State the falsification of the legislative records the pretended primary so skillfully engineerd by the machine blood money packed juries and subservient courts halters to strangle men judi cially murdered nothing but false pretense fraud violence and corrup tion I And this is what your machine offers to the people as the essence of w Jeffersonian Democracy I Your own pact in this contest has not been an inconspicuous one A Speaker of the House in the Legisla ture which enacted the iJoebel oleo tion law niul for the passage of which it is understood you were an earnest advocate you must bear your full share of the odium which it excited It all just and generous minds As mi of the chief beneficiaries of the fraud perpetrated by the Music Hall conven tionthe fitting offspring of the Goebel lawyou must be held to your shore of responsibility for disfranchising one third of the Democrats of the State in order to force upon them candidates t hey dm not desire- Democratic Statecraft But your masterpiece of Democratic state craft was reserved for the con tested election When in spite of the frauds perpetrated under the inlq utes of the election law an indig nant people had rejected your ticket and your own partisan board had cer tined to the election of your opponents Instead of abiding by the result you demanded as a means of overthrowing the will of the people that the votes of the people of forty counties which had cast majorities against you should not be counted on the flimsy pretext that the ballots were on paper which was not quite aj thick as you thought it oncht to be yet the votes of a dozen other counties which had given you majorites and which were on the identical sort of paper used by the others anti were furnished by the same contractors were deemed good enough to be received In other words you claim that the State gov urnment can forbidthe people as it nas done to cast their votes in any other way than on the ballots furnish ed by the State and that the citizen utter having exercised this right in the only way that is permitted him may bo robbed of his vote by the caprice of a partisan legislature or a partisan board provided that he rotes against the interests of the machine but if he votes to support- It his vote may bo counted however mat In effect your claim is that the government established to protect the people in the enjoyment of their liberties is nothing but a fraudulent engine to rob them of their dearest rightsIs your Jeffersonian Democra jyt Is this your jealous care of the rights of election by the people Is his your acquiescence in the decisions jf the majority Is this your lidea of right and justice Is it a pretense Ivan to common honesty t The Record of the State Administration I do not care to dwell upon the nokenlng details of the faults cha rged against your administration upon the scandals attached to your benevo lent institutions tne unusual fees paid from the public fund and from the pay of soldiers to favored counsel mad the encouragement of crime by gravestsot be expected that an aduunlstra Jon installed by the fraudulent methods employed could have any regard for the public interests or attain to moral excellence in any of its departments But the latest proposition that you have made is the most mar velous of all your acts As the chief executive of the State the people have assigned to you in a judicial capaci ty the duty of finally passing upon the guilt or innocence of those who may appeal to you for clemency It happens that three men are under sentence of death Their cases are still pending on appeal in the courts They have never come before you for adjudication You cannot possi bly know anything of their guilt or innocence But as you have made the life or death of one of these men a political Issue you promise to with iold your pardon from two of these men and call upon your competitors to declare in advance eveu of an elec tion whether he will pardon the other In effect you propose to gamble for the votes of the people the stake being the blood of men whose cases still pending in the courts nave never been brought before you and who for aught that you know may oe in nocent of the crimes charged against them A proposition moro repellant to all sense of propriety and public duty was never conceived by the bruin of man I I have been induced to refer to sone parts of your political career becau you eeeui to consider that there is some mysterious connection between the attle of port Donelson whit occurred fortyone years ago and your aggressive warfare today aRiiim every principle of Democracy- I attributed my inability to IURcover this connection to my natural ol tusonefis But on referring the question to gentlemen of known anng sty and general understanding in the neighborhood I find that they equally with myself were unable to explain your conundrum I trust yo will take an early occasion to roliev the anxiety ot the people always cage for instruction In such abstrne proli Jems to rend the riddle you here propounded for their consideration I have been advised by some friends whO disapprove entirely of the nab of your machine that I should never theless give them my support n the hope that they may hereafter re form I cannot perceive the wisdom of this counsel I cannot understand what goof would result to the com immunity if u larg body of good amen were to attach themselves to a Laud of highwaymen and while preaching morality to them during the tiny aid them III robbing mid plundering al night This would not oe to reform the bandits but would enable then to perpetrate crimes which they could not commit without the assistance of their good allies Reforms or Rewards Nor cnn 1 appreciate the patriotism of those who seek to reform time per petrators of wrong by rewarding then for their political iniquities I would only be to perpetuate the power of time machine and encourage then in further aggression on tne rights of the people The only proper wa of dealing with such offenses is to bring the robbers to justice for their crimes und by the overthrow of the ring to place it where it will be hum potent of further harm It has afforded me no pleasure to comment upon your public acts In my youth and early manhood I learned to respect and honor sons of you STRONG TALK FOR HIS PARTY r Judge Kinkead Reviews Powers Trials and Shows Up Beck hams Pardons ROASTS HARRY YEISSINGER Judge It IX Kinkead of Louisville r spoke to the voters of CInverport last Thursday afternoon in H A Oelzes storeroom in interest of the Republi can State ticket It was a fairsized audience that greeted him and was composed of about tin equal number of Democrats and Republicans Judge Kinkead sp ke in a very forceful man ner and his remarks elicited much enthusiasm His stories and negro an ecdotes to illustrate his points were exceedingly well told and caused much laughter He did not use abusive language and when he hud finished his speech was favorably commented on by Democrats as well as Republi cansJudge Kinkead arrived on the 1010 morning train from Louisville He was met at the depot by a number of local Republicans and entertained during his stay in the city by Oapt J H Row land At 180 Jndge KinKead was in troduced by Copt Rowland and began speaking Ho spoko nearly two hours Judge Kinkead opened his speech by saying that ho was not speaking as a politician and wouldnt tae any State office that might ba offered to him He then referred to Col Harry Weis singer in a uleuxant and humorous way and that he would speak in this city Saturday Ho said that you would hove to catch Harry between breakfast and supper to tell which way he was going to vote and hint no one in Louisville takes Harry Weis singer seriously but Harry himself He then devoted several minutes telling what Democratic greed for Bee hall done for and in the State of Kentucky Among other things he said that it had brought Kentucky to her Knees determined that there should be no majority to rule in the State and had formed ono of the most Heinous conspiracies against human life and liberty ever conceived in the human mind to nang innocent men by appropriating 100000 for the conviction of Goebels murderers Present ocnditions in Kentucky were caused by the Democratic party he said and not f by the Republicans as the Demo cratic press asserts It has caused the Democratic lenders to take the bones of Goebel from the ground Dud rattle II IFor sale by r girls fleeing for the defense of their honor Judge Kinkead spent sometime re viewing the trials of Caleb Powers He said that he was one of Powers counsel in all the trials but the last ono and know whereof he spoke Ten days utter he had been made Caleb Powers counsel he loomed that Henry E Youtsuy alone tired the shot that killed Goebel Youtsey told him this in n confidential conversation and yet Democratic greed for ofHce prompts Democratic speakers to say that the Republican party is responsible for killing Goebel when they know that Youtsey killed him In Powers first trial in 1000 ne said Judge Cantrill excused the won he did not want out of 100 that had been summoned to serve on the jury In tnis manner he sifted 100 men to suit his own purposes In the second trial in lOOlCuntrill appointed three of the most rabid Goebolites in Scott county to put the names in the box Out of 200 names drawn from the wheel there were 105 Democrats Out of these only six men were secured as jurymen andCantrill sent the sheriff of Scott county over into Bourdon county The sheriff passed Republicans on the road and the homes of Republicans and summoned 10U men 101 of whom were followers of Goebel In the iast trial the jury was solid Democratic In concluding his remarks about Powers trials Judge Kinkead said There never has been and never will be a Repuolican set on the Powers case under Democratic rule unless they see fit to put him there If there is one pardon that will damn Beckham said Judge Kiukead it is the pardon of Ed Alvey the Louisville gambit who lias contrib uted thousands of dollars to tho Demo cratic Campaign Committee At 5 oclock in the afternoon he waj convicted and at U oclock certain Demo cratic officials from Louisville went to Frankfort carrying reasons with them why Alvey should he pardoned That same evening Alvey met certain ilern ocratio officials and said if the pardon uldnt come he would tell it all The pardon came next morning Alveys pardonJudge Kinkead said was one for political purposes He then spoke briefly of tho heinous crimes of Josiah Raliegh and the murderer of Mrs McClanahan both of whom Beckham pardoned although Gov Brown and Gov completed also to penitentiary which is known as the State Farm as they have a large farm of 2000 acres and they work the convicts on it Each county in the State also has a county farm and instead of having criminals to lay in jail to pay their tine they work there on tnis ounty farm I understand each farm is self sustaining and the county is not burdened with the tax of keep ing those criminals in jail Meridian is one of the best towns of the South rf rvr v v w for its size which is about 0000 Tt is upported on the North by farming ind on the South by the pine woods The pine woods extend from Meridian to the Gulf This is bringing more noney to the South than any other industry as the country is full of saw nils and turpentine factories and the iresent prices of lumber makes the in
