to Take Charge- of Central Baptist Church I at Chattanooga EXCELLENT WORK DONE HERE It t t Rev J F Vines resignation as 1 pastor of the Baptist church of this I city and of the Goshen Baptist church at Glendeane will go into effect Octo I ber 1 He has accepted a call from the Central Baptist church at Chatta Ih I Inoogs Tenn which has a member ship of a out 400 and is one of the I hest fields in that State The call was received by Rev Vines on August 23 and he accepted it as it pays a higher salary than the two pastorates f be now holds Rev Vines tendered his resignation f as pastor of the Goshen Baptist church t on August 30 and on last Friday even t fag he announced his resignation as pastor of the Baptist church of this city He will preach at Glendeane September 13 and 27 and will deliver his last sermon in this city in Sep tem ber 20 It is with extreme regret that Rev Vlnea two congregations have receiv ed the news of his resignation as they are loth to give him up He has done most excellent work for both churches and has won the esteem and friendship of the members of his congregations and of other denominations as well While Ill wish they could retain him yet they are glad that he has been honored with a higher call and wish him every sacc s3 and en courag ment in his new field Rev Vines took charge of the local Baptist church in June 1001 and of the church at Glendeane in June 4flU02 as the successor of Rev W B Rutledgu He came to this city from the West End Baptist church at Ash r ville N 0 to which Rev Rntledge succeeded him and attended the Bap tist Theological Seminary until June r graduatedrthe church at Glendeane nearly 100 new members have united with the 1churoh and n beautiful house of wor ship has been built and is almost paid for Gooa worn in the local church k also has been done The remainder of I the debt on the parsonage has been liquidated a tine vocalion for the church has been purchased and the membership increased by more than fifty Besides assisting n this gcod work Rev Vines took a vigorous and I i- limost helping part In Cloverports local option fight last year and in all move ments inaugurated for the public rood He is afluent and interesting talker an able expositor of the Scriptures and n mlnisetr of energy and power For a minister just out of the Seminary his record has been most excell ent and his every Master Car and Locomotive Painters convention of the United States and Canada The convention opened in the Victoria Hotel at 8 oclock Tuesday morning and will continue the remainder of the week Mr McCracKeu represents the Hender son Route at the convention as foreman of its paint shop in this cityHe has been a member of the asjociation for the last live vears and has attended all of the annual meetings during that time Last year he read a valuable and interesting paper on the subject of cleaning passenger cars before the convention His Ideas were original and have been adopted by a number Meredith and J B Cave were their uonasmen They returned to their homes in Grayson county Both will be tried at toe Novemoer term of the United States court Meeting With Success The Calor Oil Company which will pipe gas from Meade and Hardin coun ties to Lonisvllleis meeting with suc cess In securing the right of way Eighteen wiles of right of way In Jefferson county has been secured and practically the entire route In Meade and Hardin counties It will cost something like 500000 to build the pipe line to Louisville and the man agement expects to begin work on it In October Drilling New Oil Well H T Haynes of Brandenburg an experienced well driller Is superintending the erection ot the derrick tor the new oil well which will be sunk oy the Fowler Neighborhood Oil Co at Ellzabethtown By September 15 he expects to have the derrick completed and the necessary machinery set In po sition The tools and machinery will be of the best make and the new com pany will drill to nuion town formerly of this city left Tues day fur the sonthern part of Mississippi where she has accepted position ONLY ONE IS THE DEBTOR Judgment Given by Judge Wills Against Perfect Com bustion Co OTHER CASE IS DISMISSED The suits of twentynine former em ployes of the Patton brick yard against the Perfect Combustion Co of Amerl caand the Central Clay Product Co for wages for labor performed were tried before Police Judge Wills Monday afternoon A number of witnesses testified and the trial consunned two hours Judge Wills dismissed the case against the Central Clay Product Co without prejudice and gave judgment to the plaintiffs against the Perfect Combustion Co of America If execution has to be levied It will be on the Brice railroad tunnel kiln at the Patton yard as that is the onlY property there belonging to that companyGeo Patton nominal president of the Central Clay Product Co was present as its representative and had V G Babbage for his counsel In the evidence it came out that E C Brice Had sole control of the brick yard after May 12 as president of tne Perfect Combustion Co of America and that the claims against the two companies were for labor performed since that late To expedite matters Gus Brown and H C Murray attorneys for the plaintiffs admitted that Brice had employed some of the plaintiffs and tried to prove in their argument that Mr Patton was the agent of Brices company in order to get the Perfect Combustion Co into court as Iit had no representative present Mr Patton stated that he was not the companys agent but if by law Mr Brown could show that be had beenthough unwittingly on his part he would be willing as it was his desire also to get Brices company into court The case then rested with the court an l the above decision was rendered Investigation was made by the board of commissioners and also by myself In person and by my representative I found that In two cases attendants had used unnecessary force In dealing with patients and when discovered the two attendants were promptly discharged The principal charges made against the olllcluls there and about whose testimony so much was sold by the hostile press were made by two con vict patients Gorge Portwood and Mary Noble and to give some Idea of the character of this testimony 1 will tell who they are 1ortwood several years ago killed a man In Lexington and upon trial was sentenced to be hanged Qov Bradley commuted his sentence to lire Imprisonment He made application to mo for a full parton It was refused lie feigned Insanity and was tried on that question last winter Time Jury was deceived and authorized his transfer to tho asylum lie was taken to Lakeland but the doctors there Quickly discovered his purpose and that was to escape They took extra precautions with as to wilfully fabricate a story In order to reflect upon me that Raleigh fired upon this girl while she was n elng from him after he had improperly accosted her There never was a shadow of truth in this story mirt a baser falsehood was never uttered The father ot the girl would never have ask ed for the pardon If such had been true The late J B Marcum wrote a strong letter In the case asking for the pardon and stated that he did not believe that Raleigh bud fired the shot which killed the girl Ills statement certainly relieves the case nf any political nnorlne I merely cite this as an
