Condition Contributed to Make the Ma sons Second Annual Barbecue a L Big Event FOUR THOUSAND PEOPLE IN ATTENDANCE t Tho barbecue given Thursday In- Se llImans Grove just east of the city by Cloverport Lodge No 133 I F A was a big event in severy respect and eclipsed the success of the Masons First Annual Barbecue of last year Every con dition contributed to its success and r a more suitable day for the affair I could not nave been selected Conser vative estimates of the attendance place it between three and four thou sand and the number of outoftown peoplo who came was decidedly great er tuan it was last year Everybody seemed to be having a good time and not afraid to spend their money The best of order was preserved by Marshal Willis and a force of depu ties The day was clear and bright I The Masons took in a big sum of money and were much pleased with the success of the day The merchants did a big business throughout the day and were plensed too The people who attended the barbe cue returned to their homes content ed with the enjoyment of the day and hoping they would have the opportunity to attend the Masons Third Annual Barbecue next year THE PEOPLE WHO CAMK People from the country back of the city began to arrive as early as 7 oclock in the morning and by 10 oclock the vacant lots near the bar becue grounds were literally covered with vehicles of evrey description j The 045 eastbound passenger train over the Henderson Route brought about two hundred people from Skillman Hawesville Cannelton and I other points below here on both sides I ComY mercial Band also came on thisI I train The band made a fine ap pearance in their green uniforms and after marching through town went to the barbecue grounds where throughout the day it delighted the big crowds with a continuous concert of popular airs The excursion over the branch from Fordsville came between 10 and 11 oclock with about 800 people The five conches were full and sos crowded was the train that ma- nytrodo on the steps and between the t I I ImmedlI 1010 westbound passenger train On It came Col Morris B Belknap L Republican nominee for Governor and another crowd of people who could not find room on the excursion train In a private car were Supt t HcCracken of the Henderson Route nnd others from Lonlsvilb t tTHEDINNER J tThelarger part of the crowd that came on the morning trains and drove into town went to the barbecue grounds on reaching the city Nearly TheIi meats which were prepared by those famous caterers Hill John Beaviu and Uncle Dick Carter were excel ently cooked and nicely served FIELD SPORTS AND CONTESTS In the afternoon the races baby show and other contests took place as advertised These attracted much attention and required most of the afternoon TUB Roans IIAt 225 oclock the races began The spectators had previously taken up their positions to see the field sports and were eager for them to bet gin The first race a 50yard da- shtwas won by Joe Champion of Tobins Ind Mr Champion is well n as the fastest runner In this r section of the country and the result of the race was not a surprise The prize for the winner was a pair of fine shoes given by F Fraize The second race a 50yard dash for boys under sixteen years of age was won by Vivian Pierce of this city He easily distanced hit op ponents and was given a target rifle by Conrad Payne Co The potato race and the sack race it e attracted a rood deal of attention and enthusiasm In the potato race Fred Newton of this city was the first to place all bis potatoes in the sacS and received 50 pounds of Golden Crown Flour from Oelze Pate Little Fred Pierce was the victor in the sack race over nine other entries who were all older boys At the first few steps most of thu runners tumbled I over setting the spectators roaring with laughter When twothirds of the course was covered Fred was in the lead and without ever falling won amid great enthusiasm TUB SOAPED PoLE About the time the races began somebody attempted to climb the soap ed pole at the top of which J C Nolte Bro had placed a 500 pair of shoes io be given to the winner A dozen men antI boys amid cheers of enthusiasm and much laughter made unsuccessful attempts to reach the coveted shoes Each one in turn would by hard efforts get a third of the way up and then slide to the ground in despair Finally the successful climber H Blair of near this city reached the shoes and won the praise of the Interested and amused spectators After several had tried to climb the pnleit was thought best to lower the shoes a few feet from the top When this was done Mr Blair climbed higher than anyone else and got the shoes The climbing of the soaped pole was one of the most interesting attractions of the day and drew the attention of every body on the grounds TILE BABY SHOW After the field sports the baby snow took place The age limit was eight een months and the babies were ex hibited on the band stand before three judges and hundreds of specta tors The first prize a solid gold ring given by W B Oelze was awarded to Mr and Mrs J 0 Stevens little daughter of this city and the second prize a bottle of perfumery given by A R Fisher was taken by Mr and Mrs James E Buckebys twin children BRat PRESERVED OLD LADY W T Tilford as was announced on the program was to crown the ugliest man on the grounds with a new hat but no candidate for that honor could be found The best pre served old lady was decided by the judges to be Mrs John McGavock of near this city Mrs McGavock was presented with a pair of gold spectacles by Short Haynes POPULARITY CONTESTS The contest to decide who was the most popular young lady and the most popular farmer on the grounds aroused much interest The Bank of Cloverport had a booth for the first contest and the Breckcncldge Bank for the last Each one cent paid at either booth entitled the voter to one vote Miss Mamie DeHaven received the highest number of votes in the most popular young lady contest and John McGavock in the most popular farmer contest To Miss DeHaven was given 500 in gold by the Banu of Cloverport and Mr Mc Gavook received 1500 in gold from the Breckinridge Bank The total receipts in each contest were donated to Cloverport Lodge No 133 F M A Al THE RUNABOUT RAFFLE y A li00 runabout for 25 centsI This was one of Chas Moormans favorite spells Lead pencils were sold at 25 cents each the purchaser drew a numbered ticket and his name was placed next to that number The tickets were placed in a rotary churn and shaken up Miss Donald Murray was then blindfolded and drew ticket number 071 from the churn Jas E Buckeby had pre viously purchased this ticket and was given the handsome runabout THE END UF TUB If UN The various contests were over about 5 oclock and then the merry making crowd began to leave The- M M si 9 t + excursion train lett on its return trip and Col Belknap and other Louis ville people left on the regular after noon train The Cannelton Commer clal Band did not leave until the 735 evening trait and rendered nn excellent selection just before the train pulled into the depot NOTES Candidates galore Hardinsbnrg turned out in force Are you coming again next year Did you get any confettiIn your mouthHalf a dozen barrels of ice Ovate didnt last long It will be a green spot in the memory of all present Sklllmans Grove is voted the ideal place for a barbecue The hot chocolate and hot coffee stand did a good business Remember the Masons Third An nual Barbecue next year People were here from every town in this section of the State Whistling pigs confetti and the voices of the barkers kept the air alive Everything on the grounds was sold down to the last box of popcorn Signs everywhere Ed Gregory put them up and the merchants got the trade The Masons wore white caps and their wives and daughters wore dainty white aprons Mayor Reid made it fine appearance in his white suit and was pursued by the camera fiend Who enjoyed the barbecue the most Why those who sat side by side upon the big hill Glendeane turned out beautifully More than a hundred came in on the excursion and many by laud The big ice create stand in the cen ter of the grounds drew a large pa tronage Seventy gallons of cream were sold The county candidates were easily recognized by their excellent photo graphs in J D Babbage Jr program and souvenir The Masons presided at the lemonade banana and pop stands and their sis ters wives and daughters daintly served ice cream lemonade candies fruits etcIof bags were bought and thrown in handfuls by the crowd no one caring who tne victim was and everybody laughing when a good throw was made Prof Bert Beavins Great Afro American minstrel show drew the crowd It could be seen half a mile Prof Beavins coat it could be heard nil over the grounds his speil ing for his show Col BelKnap with a pleasant smile and a good word for everybody was entertained by Capt J H Rowland and introduced to scores of prominent Republicans of the county He showed himself to be a man of the people and made many friends dur ing the day The Hon D C Moorman Demo cratic nominee for Representative Matt P Payne Republican nominee for Representative W S Ball Republican nominee for Circuit Court Clerk and Tom J Moore Democratic nominee for Circuit Clerkall were there shaking hands and making friendsThe program and souvenir for the Masons Second Annual Barbecue published and given away by J D Babbage Jr proved of great convenience to those interested in the contests and field sports and of much value as it showed where to best invest your money in Clover portW B Oelze drew the crowd and the trade by having phonographs on the grounds and displaying big signs The baroecue grounds made a beautiful appearance with the big crowd in holiday attire and the white signs and the refreshment stands against the background of the dark green shade trees and hills Pete Schumack an old timer who lived here in the sixties and now re sides in Little Rock Ark was on the grounds greeting old friends and having the time of his life Said he was awful glad to get back to the old town once more and to shake the hands of his may old friends Pete is a little grey but is a well preserve man for his age Confetti is greet sport Whats the matter with the Masons T A wagonload of light bread on the dinner tables No more beautiful grounds any where for a barbecue Never did greyhaired men and greyhaired women enjoy themselves moreLouis Ashley said he come over especially to shake hands with Col Beltcnap It was the remark of everybody that it was the finest looking body of peo pIe and the best humored they ever saw Ell Dean Jesse Moorman and Ferd Owen were some more oldtimers that were present and enjoying the dayProf Powell of Tobinsiiort said it was the finest looking and most orderly crowd of people he ever saw together The Masons are all happy They had a good time and the credit side of their bank account shows about 300 to the better Jim BncKebys twin babies were among the special attractions Two beautiful little girls and as much alike as two peas Alex Hambleton was another old timer who was nil smiles nail having a good time He met many old ac quaintances whom he had not seen in years Jerry Tilford is an ideal conductor He can handle a crowd with as much ease and as good natnredly as any man Handling an excursion train is no easy job- When the community the railroad and the newspaper get in touch with each other and all work together they can make anything a success Cooperation it the key note of sue Jells There were more than a hundred visitors came over on the special from Fordsville Many of them had not been here before in years They all went home delighted with their tilt There were seven hundred and fifty people came in on the excursion from the branch A nice quiet orderly crowd and as fine looking people as ever the sun shined on They all love Cloverporl and never miss an opportunity to visit the old townIt an oldfashioned reunion for many of the older citizens who had not met each other for years To a reporter for The Herald a trainmaster at the Seventh street depot said last evening that never in the history of the Middle West had the traveling public been so largo as during the last summer and gave the high tide of prosperity at present enjoyed by the country as the cause Last Thursday he said a mew orable weekday record was established when an excursion train over the Henderson Route carried 750 people from Sundayschool Coaven tion adjourned in Lexington Thursday evening after the most successful session ever held in the history of Kentucky The noble band of volun teer soldiers for Christ the cream of the State thrilled the audlencess with brief accounts of work aone and the great international workers who had traveled many miles to attend spoke words of cheer and encouragement One of the most striking things was the great number of men and women busy in their secular a voca tions who told of marvelous work done by then in the Sundayschool cause One young merchant who had a small room used as a kind of holy of holies had in the past year through his personal efforts seen fwentynine young men confess Christ This example shows the great value of personal effort and contact There were 570 delegates present at the convention and with all these workers thoroughly aroused to the importance of the great work to be done Kentucky will soon be in the first ranks There were six delegates from Meiide county and still more tram Breokenndge county and all came home so full of enthusiasm that the Sunday school will no doubt take on new life The State Executive Committee in recognition of the 1857 is Free of Debt and Will Make Modern Ict IImprovements p 1AS BELOVED PASTOR IN FATHER BREY I J toJue growth of St Roses Roman =li church since Its establish VEJn this city in the year 1857 to its =I standing under the charge of 1G Anther Celestine Brey its res brightaleilll maKe several modern improve ments and has a pastor beloved by his congregation and popular among other denominations These excellent conditions are due to the several pastors of the church and the members of the congregation during the early history of the church and in recent years Especially is much credit due Father Brey and the present congregation as they have liquidated the entire debt the church In the year 1857 the first church in bt Roses parish was built by Father Power It was too small for the growing congregation composed principally of Irish families who worked at the famous cannel coal mines at Victoria and was replaced by a larger and more beauti ful church in 1857 by Father Rig jjgins The first church a small brick CHURCH structure was called St Malachi but the new frame church was dedicated- as St Roses church The first resi dent pastor was Father Jno Sheridan This church and parsonage was destroyed by fire in February 1604 but owing to the energetic adminis tration of Father Nichaus October 21 of the same year witnessed the dedication of the present house of worship a picture of which is shown herein Father Brey the present pastor took charge of St Roses Nov 1 07 Before hip was the late Father M M Carrol of Boston When Father Brey took charge the debt of the church was 2600 He at once devised a way to pay it By annual subscriptions on the part of the members the debt was reduced at fol lows Jan 1 00 2 JWO i Jan 1 1UM1000 i Jan 1 1C01 fIMO i Jan 1 1002 900 On Jan 1 1003 the remaining fOOO had been paid and the subscriptions of last year have been duplicated the money obtained in this manner to bo used in im proving the church Only a week or so ago Father Brey let a contract with Stratton Sterstegge of Louis ville for n Monarch No 3 X fur nace to be placed in the basement of the church The excavations for the furnace are now being made After this improvement is made tllA wood work onthe outside of the church will be repainted the woodwork on the inside will be varnished and the altar will be painted white Since Father Brey has had charge of the church new vessels for the altar candelabra new chalices oiborimus and one ostensorlum have been bought Father Brey was born May 6 1809 at Whitesville Ky In September 1884 he entered St Marys College He was here two years at Bardstown College one year at Ceollian one year at Ellicott City xMaryland two years and then graduated at St Marys University Baltimore Maryland in 1695 after taking a five years course On July 21 1805 be was ordained a priest by Bishop McCloskey of the Louisville discese and said his first mass at Whitesville His first charge was at Fancy Farm Graves county where he remained four months He spent one year at bt Marys Fenwick Washing ton county and then returned to Fancy Farm After tourteeu months more at Fancy Farm he was appoint ed to his present charge by Bishop McClosky When he first came he hadcharge df the old churcn at Mt Merino near Irvington He built K new church and then Father Mey eying took charge to be sn cceeded by Father Zoeller He now lint charge of St Rosas with a membership of about sixty families i Immaculate Con ception at Hawesville twentyfive families i and St Columbus at Lewis port twenty families The order of ser vices is as
