located at Web t ater consummated his project in getting up a cave party lust week and escorting them to the Mammoth Cave The party consisted of Messrs Thomas Lyddan J C Crutoher and Misses Norris Kurtz and Nannie Lyddan of I Webster Mr Jesse Herndon and wife and Miss Mary Wrather of Irvington i L L Bell and wife and Misa Ella Robertson of Guston i Miss Bernice Shacklett of E ron Messrs W DAshcraft Frank Webb and Misses Mabel Simmons Mary Price and Eula Dowden of Brandenburg Messrs Overton and Murray Blanford and Miss I es Anna Payne and Alberta Drurv of Bewleyville Misses Mary Elstca Har daway and Pansy Paris of St Louis and Lucile Henderson of New o Orleans who are visiting relatives near Guston and Irvington There were several who joined our party at 1t1le cave some from Georgia Tenn essee Ohio and Missouri making about thirty that went through the 1I1cave together tAlthough certain parts of the cave I are frought with danger our party traversed twentysix miles of it with out a casuality except the sprain genUetmen cave owners say there are X59 discovered miles of cavern in the Mammoth Cave The writer ha gone through both the Wyandotte cave of Indlaca and the Mammoth cave of Kentucky and as to beauty the r former has it but when it conies toI the immensity of the thing the Mam moth cave of course has got in her bluff The long route of the Mam moth is nine miles and not a single Y stalactite or stalagmite is to be seen while the Wyandotte cave has 1thousant13 of them But the short route ttof Mammoth cave has a great many k stalactites and stalagmites Of course one could write up a great many interesting things concerning rtheMammoth cave but there are so i many books pamphlets etc already h written that it is useless to bother our f good editor wIth more The old hotel 1 1too Is a curiosity within itself the y quaint old building some ofit prob ably three quarters of a century + old with an annex of log cabins i straight in a row for 500 feet each joined to the other has in front a porch the same length with solid wooden columns The hotel grounds and vicinity are filled with the 4Forost Primeval IIfor almost every imaginable variety of tree can be found there some of them seeming to measure three and four feet India meter The management keeps every thing immaculately clean and tries to please their guests in every particular Every one in our party seemed to be so well pleased that it is useless to say that a trip to the Mammoth Cave is well worth your time and money hut I would advise going in a party Mr Clint Crutcher is thinking of getting up a party for Niagara Falls and I want to say right here that if he does and taKes charge of it himself there will be neither care nor pains spared to make you enjoy yourself Each and home in Lewisport at 11 40 oclock Friday night after an illness of nearly three months Mrs Scott was past eighty years of age and belonged to one of the oldest and best families in Han cock county Her father Mike Scott came to Hancock county in 1839 She was a sister of the late George Smith one of the best known men of the county who died at his home near Lewisport several years ago She was a sister of Mr Levi Smith and Mrs Cattle Greathouse who now reside in Iewisport She leaves two sons and Jwq daughters They are Lawson Woolridge of Louisville George W Scott of Owensboro Mrs Sallie Hicks of Lewisport and Miss Mary Scottt who lived with her mother until her death The funeral was conducted from the home Sunday afternoon and the interment was in the Lewisport burying ground A RBass of Florida on Wednesday July SIe In the sixtyfifth year of his age William Lamb Huckeby a native of Indiana and son of the late Joshua Brannon Huckeby and Rebecca Lang Huckeby He was a resident of Breckenridge county for many years previous to his removal South having married Miss Nannie J Shrewsbury Pate of Walnut Hill near Bites Run by whom he was the father of two sons now grown A daughter by a former marriage Mrs John Allen Smart of Beaumont Texas also survives him and he leaves fifteen grandchildren Mrs Isabelle de la Hunt of Virginia Place Cannel ton is his only living sister remain- Paralysis t WOMAN OF EXEMPLARY LIFE Mrs Elisha B Gardner who for manly lived near this city died at her home in Union Star Friday at II1 oclock in the afternoon of paralysis She had been in declining health since lust January when she received a partial paralytic stroke The inter ment took place at Irvington Satur day morning at 0 oclock The funer al services were conducted by Rev J T Lewis of the Irvington Bap tist church assisted by Rev Hines of the Methodist church at Irving tonMrs Gardner is survived oy her husband BUll the following children Mrs Sandy Hendry of West Point Ida Will Newsoui John and Jesse Gardner Two children are dead In 1842 Mrs Gardner was born About 1S05 she was married to Mr Elisha Gardner They lived on the Scott Smart place in the Bites Run neighborhood a short time then in this city Later they novel to Union Star Mrs Gardner was a member of the yearstheand vicinity and was known and be loved by many acquaintances at Union Star She led an exemplary life in every respect was the mother of a family of honorable men and women and her loss Is deeply felt in the community in which she lived aid endeared herself unto others Died of Cholera Infantum Irene age one year and ten months the bright little daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Furrow of Holt died Friday of cholera Infantum The interment was at Merritts grave yard near Addison Mr Furrow is a son of Chus Furrow education No other city in the State is so well equippe along these lines The Eastern Asylnm the Reform School and the State Col r lege were nil visited by the member of the association in a body and the nnfortnnat creatures who are sent there The Reform school is certainly a great Institution and a revelation to person who are not acquainted with its meth ode of caring for the boys and girls The
