SAYSHIT WAS SUDDEN 1 WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN of Nebraska for President ADLAI E STEVENSON of Illinois for VicePresident The chief center of interest on the glorious Fourth this year was the assembling in convention of the Democratic forces at Kansas City Large crowds were in attendance and there was but a dull time experienced It had been hoped that the nomination of Bryan for President would occur on that historic day and so make one more thlinkin the chain of liberty by forging another blow for independence but plan was frustrated by a wrangle among the members of the 3 committee on platform which caused some delay reallIfigTit was keynote campaignimperialism and all the antis or free silver Bryan from his new front porch at Lincoln manipulated the wires He would stand 4 on free silver or nothing and the silver tongued orator who from his w Tantage point of eloquence and a years ceaseless striv to win the hearts of his party carried his point by one vote Free silver will be the paramount issue again and over this well worn and outofdate campaign cry will the Republicans ride to victory on the safe and magnificent steedprosperity apr r pears in this issue It is clear and to the point It is antieverything 1 rltndmakes the free silver again an all important issue It is the 96 Chicago platform emphasized On Thursday William Jennings Bryan was placed in nomination by Oldham of Nebraska This motion was greeted with prolongedap planes and the nomination was made by acclamation Mr Bryan was r lot present and received the news quietly at his home at Lincoln Thursday was spent in an effort to secure a VicePresidential nom 5 inee which was effected at half past two in the afternoon when Adlai Stevenson of Illinois Grover Clevelands running mate was given the i honor of making the race with Bryan Stevenson Hill Towno Pat eloquentkseconding speeches were made David B Hill of New i have received the nomination but in a brief but decisive speech he LFurged the convention to recall his name For personal reasons and he believed it best for the party he declined the nomination After Hills refusal the convention nominated VicePresident Adlai Steven son on the first ballot Htevenaon was at the home of his his soninlaw Rev Martin Hardin at Lake Minnetonka when wired of nomination He remarked that he had not been a candidate but would accept the nomination Woman Suffrage Amendment In Oregon Not Overwhelming ly Defeated DAY ATCHAUTAUQUA The statement has been sent broadcast that the suffrage amendment iu Oregon was overwhelmingly defeated This wee taken advantage of by the opposition and all the other defeats of Woman Suf frage propositions added to it as proof that Woman Suffrage was losing ground While tho returns from the vote on the Woman Suffrage amendment in Or eton are coming in slowly the last ac counts show the amendment is ahead The official returns are now in from nineteen counties and their aggregate vote is Ye 12323 No 11278 Of the nineteen counties only six failed to give a majority for the women Of these six one Lake was a tie another Yam Hill went No by only one vote and a third Umatilla by three votes The bulk of the opposition Is said to have been in Mnltnomah county where the vote of the slums was cast solid against Woman Suffrage There are fourteen counties yet to hear horn Oregon suffragists be lieve that all but three of these will give the amendment a majority The report that it had been defeated by an over whelming majority was without founda tion The vote was so close that t is even yet impossible to will again let my friends and the readers of the NEWS hear some news from Texas We are having some very dry weather just now Corn is suffering for rain but farmers are having a nice time for threshing About onehalf of the grain has already been threshed in the county Oats are making seventyfive to one hundred bushels per acre and wheat is making twenty to forty with an average of about twentyeight bushels per acre I have just threshed nlnteen hundred and six busbels from eightythree acres of land and sold the same for 116263 The cotton crop has been damaged some by web worms which have taken the second trial at it and in many places have almost destroyed the crop The estimate on the present crtp is four to five million bales against Ine million last year and thirteen million year before last The present crop Is expected to bring a fancy price also the crop of 1001 If any of the boys In old Kentucky ever expect to come to Texas to farm I would advise them to come this fall Come early sow wheat and raise a cotton crop next year The people have sold about all their surplus horses and mules to the government for cash and the great grain crop is now going on the market with a good 1900 NR r f FOR A FAIR t ILAWasera appointed by the maeameeting of citizens of Louisville March 5th WE send through the State printed matter urging the repeal of the Election Law and the adoption of a fair election law None of us are politician officeholders or ofllceoeekere This committee has nothing to do with elthtr party or the Honest Election league or any corporation or any politi cal organization We are simply private citizens who feel interested in the peace welfare and good name of the t tate Most of us are Democrats but we all believe that the Goebel Law is essentially undemocratic that it has already brought great trouble upon our people that so long aa it stands we shall have no peace that there can bu no fair reason for retaining it upon the statute books and that all men should dtsire its repeal That the law is undemocratic ia plain upon its face It gives absolute control of the appointment of all election officers everywhere in the State to a Central Board of three State Election Commissioners Messrs Foyntz Yonlz and Fulton who were not elected by tile people who are not responsible to the people who can not be removed by the people It gives these three men also the supreme power to make the final count of votes in all contested elections and to declare who shall have the offices and who shall not The only exception to this rule is in the case of a contested election of governor or lieutenant governor which the Constitution provided shall be determined by the legislature but the members of the legislature get their credentials from county election commission ers whom the State Board appoints and may remove at will at any instant If one of the board dies or resigns the people eau not fill his place It is filled by tie other two If two die or resign their places are filled by the other one When Pryor and Ellis resigned Poyntz exercised the extraordinary power of appointing Fulton and Yonts to their places Ihb principle of the law is undemocratic and no amendment yet suggested can make it democratic No amendment can do so which does not realy amount to a total repeal It takes from the people of each county the right they always before had to elect their own county officer formerly their county judge to ap point the election officers for each precinct in the county Until the Geobel Law was enacted the people of each county upon discovering any unfairness or fraud in the appointment of election officers in that county always had it in their power to punish the fraud by defeating the man who committed it at tbd next election Un der tbe Gcebel Law that power is taken from them If theState Board wants fraud it has only to appoint men on the county boards who are willing to do Its bidding If they refuse the State Board can remove them at any moment In a word the Goebel Law subjects every election in every county in the State to tbe arbitrary power of the three members of the State Board and then makes them the final judges to say who is elected in every case save only in the case of Governor or Lieutenant Governor The Czar of Russia has not a more absolute power over his subjects than these three Election Commissioners could exercise over the people of Kentucky p 07 did they have the deposition to exirclsa stand are not afraid to do it Such a dependence of popular rights upon the will of three men however good and wise whom the people cannot elect must not only be abhorrent to every man who really believes in the most essential of all Democratic principles the right of the people to be governed by men of their own choosing but It is political slayer Will true Kentuckians approve it 7 Ought they do so Should not every manwho loves his State who believes in free government who would have the people of Kentucky a free people who believes in fair play use his ir fluence for the repeal of this law We make no appeal as party men In this emergency parties are nothing to us There are men who can not undertsand this sentiment We trust there are many who can and will We appeal to the moral sense of the people We accuse no one We defend no one We recognize the errors the wrongo the crimes of politicans of both parties But we believe that the great mass of men of both parties want what is honorable right and fair It la these that we earnestly urge to consider what we say and to use every endeavor to secure the prompt and total repeal of this undemocratic and dangerous election law It has already dote great harm If it is not repealed it will do far greater harm hereafter It was a Democratic measure and therefore our main appeal must needs be to Democrats We ask each of these to calmly consider whether the honor and I the peace of our State would not be furthered by the repeal of the law We ask him whether its retention will not be a plain confession of weakness by the Demo cratic party and prove that it ia afraid of the people on a fair vote and a fair count We ask him if it would not even prove that the Democratic party the party which in former years under a fair election law alwajs honestly carried the State by large majorities has been dragged down by its shortsighted and selfish leaders to the dishonorable practice of securing by a false count offices which they formerly won in battle If that Is not the purpose of those leaders who oppose the repeal of the law we ask every fair minded Ddmocrat why those leaders are unwilling to let the people of each county elect the man or men who are to appoint the election officers for that count Why do they want to leave power over elections in the hands of three men on the State board all of whom or a controlling majority of whom are DemocraU No amendment which does not amount to a repeal will leave tbe law anything but what it now Isdespotic The amendment proposed by Senator Blackburn and recommended by the recent Democratic Convention to the effdct that the Republic can partv shall be given a minority representation on the State Board is puerile It would not only leave complete control of the boards action in the hands of the Democratic majority of its members but it does not answer the objection that the board is not elected by the people is not responsible to the people and has power to nullify tbe votes of the people Again the law Is not only undemocratic on its face it is unfair To leave too partisans of one party the appointment of all the election officers of the State is plainly unfair It can not but result In fraud Such frands are sure to provoke more bad feeling and probably bloodshed The State must suffer It will take years for Kentucky to recover from the brd efieuta of what has already occurred under the Goebel Law It would be sheer madness for the great body of Demo crats to permit a few selfish leaders to prevent the repeal of a law which party policy as well as fair dealing and the peace and good name of the State demand Our regular judges under the Constitution are elected by the peopK The county judge Is elected by the people of the county If the county in Democratic the Judge will be Democratic If It to Republican he will be a Republican The J circuit judge is elected by the people of his circuit and will be of the party hav ing a majority in that circuit The same Is true of the Court of Appeals judges This is as it should be The judge being elected by the people Is responsible to the people and can be defeated for re election if they wish This is democracy true homerule democracy But although not called judges the most powerful judges l in Kentucky are the three State Elertlon Commissioners who are above the pee pIe and judge of elections Every judge in Kentucky will hereafter depend for his place on the certificate of these three men They can control the election of the legislators who life to decide contests for governor and lieutenant governor and every four years reelect Slate election commissIoners even more easily than they control the election of other State officer for all they have to do is to make the county election commissioners give certificates of election to a majorityof legis lative candidates who are pledged to reled them That majority can then decide who shall be legislators and turn out any man whom they can not control Not only are these three State Election CommUsioners the most powerful judges in the State whose decision upon the vital question of elections la final and not review able by any of the courts provided by the Constitution but they constitute the only court in Kentucky which the very object of the law is to make partisan To any man who has a sense ot justice this is appalling Suppose the Constitution of the State instead of allowing tbe people to elect them had provided that the judges of the Court of Appeals should all be Democrats or all Republicans would the fair minded people of Kentucky ever have ap proved it And vet we have seen that the State Board of Election Commissioners in the all Important matter of elections Is above the Court of Appeals That court holds itself powerless to correct any injustice or any fraud however flagrant which these three ell powerful State Election Commissioners may perpetrate The spirit of AngloSaxon liberty Is dead indeed in Kentucky if after all we have witness ed under tbis Goebel Election Law the people will longer tolerate itorany pre tended modification of It Not aa partisans but as citizens who have an interest In the State we appeal to you not as partisans but patriots to speak out like men Talk to your neighbors and demand of your leaders and representatives the unconditional repeal of this election law not merely as plainly the best policy of the DemocMtio party but as demanded for the peace on the subject given Moral social intel lectual executive enthusiastic courage ous persistent Truly a comprehensive outlook yet wanting as I believe a mc ments reflection will show in one so es sential that as may be said of charity among Christian virtues lacking this all else may be as nothing The quality to which I refer ia that of ConsecrationWithout yes a man may be emi nently moral may be able to say of the Commandments as one of old All these have I kept from youth up Pos sessed of social qualities and attractions Yes id a marked degree Intellectual Yes with mental gifts possible means the means which He Himself has provided through tho rich gifts of grace share jug His very nature in sacramental Union and by the indwelling of that Spirit the Giver of all life and power Lift every laborer pause and give room to the question How far have I laid hold upon these means and uniting my self thus with Him become in very deed a fellow worker with and for Him But it is distinctively to the work and office of u Superintendent that we are asked to apply at present our thoughts and to do this helpfully it is beet to ask definitely what is the direct aim and scope of that work la it notalwajs and in all things that of u leader And if so is it not iu this as in all things else an obvious maxim that to be a succesful Uuder one must in all things lead Let th Superintendent then but keep this aim wrlt in view and success as a rule is already aesurtd He strikes the note as it were to which the School as a whole will in more or less perfect meas ure attune itself Particularly is this true as pertaining to the teachers and officers under him for it is upon these that his qualities as a leader must most directly tell but his influence by no means ends with them If less directly none the less really is it felt and reflected to a certain extent throughout tie School for in the eyes of the pupil and in fact of tho world the Superintendent must ever stand as an epitome of all for which the School is supposed to stand an embodiment of all which it anus to teach Hence the need of having men in this position who while sadly con scious it may be of failure to realize in full this high ideal can say with an other leader of oldUNot as though I had already attained either were already perfect but I press toward the mark If this be his aim he will feel no ef fort too great to fit him for his high call lug no labor lost that will strengthen its influence or extend its scope Remem bering that young and impressionable hearts and eyes are about him he will cultivate every quality that shall command their respect and if it may be their admiration while seeking those which belong preeminently to the du ties of supervision and government It will be seen then that while we do indeed well to make Consecration the fundamental requisite in the high call ing of a Superintendent in this great work for God it is not all that Is requir ed By no means will it take the place of nor enable him to dispense with a single one of the qualities enumerated in connection with this subject when presented for our consideration Rather will it reveal their value and importance Surely will he first and all realize the importance of a moral life pure and above reproach as the outward and visi ble sign of service consecrated to the work of winning sonls for Christ Does it bear In any way upon the social life Yes necessarily for we know that none are different while the young are particularly susceptible to those qualities which go to make the outer man and are known distinctively as so clal Gentleness of manner refinement of speech and conduct a due regard to personal appearance and a loving heart writing Its characters as it ever will on the countenance are all just so many avenues for reaching others and 10 many opportunities for example and in fluence In fact it may be safely said A man who is morose and gruff in manner unsocial in disposition careless in mat ters of personal neatness hasty and harsh in voice and word whatever his consecration to his work will never make a successful Superintendent for such qualities are as repellant to the young as are bleak winds and hoar frosta to blossoms Surely consecration will never Imply that Its possessor may dispense with all that contributes to mental growth and Intellectual development As our cor respondent has said It is an age when the church and Christians demand tho best In all things He who would lead others then must surely see the need of cultivating every quality which shall fit him to guide and help those who follow him Fortunately for us moreover it Is an age of wonderful intellectual help and stimulus Nothing but supreme Indiffer ence or Indolence can leave ignorance supreme In this day of light Rather It ia difficult wisely to use the multiplied helps and not be bewildered by the ever increasing supply of literary and educational matter scattered almost broadcast through the land It Is more need to keep some definite aim and pur pose in view but the leader In Sunday School work will do well to remember that all that pertains to general know ledge and useful information In matters of general Interest will just BO far widen his Influence and his opportunities In the aid and guidance of others Surely again Consecration by no means implies that he who baa attained It may dispense with that Rift known as executive ability and which must eyer include that of judicialwiedom It lithe qualityrequisite above all others perhaps In the successful aid him in their etif jrre ment Nor will consecration take the place of enthusiasm though it would seem to largely to share the very nature of this cheery quality Such In fact should bo its character but it is notal wars so It is greatly to bo hared that truth will compel ua to admit that some of the most depressing people we have ever known have been In a certain sense the most crnsecrated They have seemed to mistake seriousness for sadness religion and reverence for all things melancholy It Is so often a fatal mistake in its in fluence on the young and even on more matured minds is certainly not aspiring And that is what enthusiasm is to dolt is to inspire first our own hearts and then the minds and hearts of others Without it the leader will fled it hard indeed to lead If he does not himself belieye in the greatness and the ulti mate success of the cause in which he labors he cannot inspire others with that belief neither can he bind them by any halfhearted halway hopefulness The genuine quality will shine from his very countenaace and ring in the tone of his voice and in so doing often will it kindle the responsive light in the countenance of others and awaken an echo in the voices around him Let us then seek the cheering inspiring uplift ing enthusiasm and when conscious that it is wanting within us let us ask it anew of him who as the God of all hope will not fail to give hope to them that ask And finding this will we not find like wise those kindred qualities which may indeed be reckoned among the requisites of the successful leader courage and per sistency Without them consecration willaccomplish nothing yet scarce can we picture the latter as unaccompanied unattended by them They may in fact bo called the hands and feet in every en terprise of human that la within us will ever and anon assert itself in vain regrets and longings and then those beautiful but sorrowful lines of Tennyson tend a chill through our aching hearts as we recall the
