Republican Convention in session at Philadelphia last week placed upon the Presidential ticket for the campaign of 1000 Vm McKin y President of the United States and Theodore Roosevelt Governor off New York This selection was made by acclamation before two oclock Fri day afternoon The nomination of McKinley had been cut and dried for some time but the boom for Teddy began at Philadelphia and created the chief Interest of thesessions of the convention It was thought at first that the brave rough rider would refuse the nomination that he was content with his honors asGovernor of Now York but such proved not to be the case However the only dissenting vote to his nomination was his own The array of talent represented at Philadelphia was wonderful The strongest men of the Republican party were present and some of the speeches among which were Wolcotts and DePews were marvels of force and eloquence The administration was approved and applauded and the issues of the day were fully exploited After the demonstrations of enthusiasm and L joy which characterize every national convention and when the convention hadadjourned tho meeting of the Executive Committee took place at which week who were delegates ta the first National Republican Convention which met at Philadelphia fortyfour years ago Temporary Chairman Wolcott the Colorado orator electrified the iI convention in a keynote speech outlining the isdies of the administration Governor Roosevelt wore his rough rider hat to the convention M Permanent Chairmen Lodge called this Republicans a paste of cheerful yesterdays and confident tomorrows Mark Hanna found his Waterloo at the Philadelphia convention Rev Charles M Sheldon whose name was on every lip a few months ago was an inconspicuous attendant at the Philadelphia convention One of the most conspicuous figures in the convention was William S Taylor of Kentucky whose brief incumbency of theGubernatorlal office al most brought about a state of ciyil of achievement and looking forward into a great field of duty and opportunity and appealing to tho judgment of their countrymen make theso declarations The expectation in which the American people turning from the Demo cratlc party entrusted power four year ago to trill Republican Chief Magis trate and a Republican Congrete bas been met nod satisfied When the peo ple then assembled at the polls after a term of Democratic legislation and ad ministration business was dead industry paralyzed and the national credit disastrously impaired The countrys capital was hidden away and its labor distressed and unemployed The Democrats had no other plans with which to improve the ruinous condition which they had themselves produced than to coin silver at tho ratio of 10 to 1 The Republican party denouncing this plan as sure to produce conditions even worse than those from which relief was sought promised to restore prosperity by means of two legislative mea sures a protective tads and a law making gold standard of value The poo pie by great majorities issued to the Republican party a commission to enact these laws This commission hM been executed and the Republican promise is redeemed Prosperity more general and more abundant than wo have ever known has followed these enactments There is no longer controversy as to the value of any govtrnment obllga lions Every American dollar is a gold dollar or Us assured equivalent and American credit stands higher than that of any nation Capital Is fully employed and everywhere labor Is profitably occupied No single fact can more strlklngll ell tho story of what Republican government means to the country thi n this that while during the whole period of one hundred and seven yaars from 1700to 1697 there was an excess of exports over imports of only 083028497 there hae been in the short three years of the present Republican administration an excess of exports over imports in the enormous sum of 1483537004 and while the American people sustained by this Republican legislation have been achieving these splendid triumphs in their business and commerce they have conducted and in victory concluded a war for liberty and human rights No thought of national aggrandizement tarnished the high purpose with which American standards were unfurled It wad a war unsought and patiently resisted but when it came the American government was ready Its fleets were cleared for action Its armies were in the field and the quick and signal triumph of its forces on land and sea bore equal tri bute to the courage of the American soldiers and to the skill and foresight of Republican statesmanship To ten millions of the human race there was given Anew birth of freedom and to the American people a now And noble responsibility McKINLEY INDORSED Y- ti We indorse the administration of William McKinley Ita acts have been established in wisdon and patriotism and at home and abroad it hiss distinctly elevated and extended the influence of the American nation Walking untried paths and facing unforeseen responsibilities President McKinley has been in every situation the true American patriot and the upright statesman clear in vision strong in judgment firm in action always inspiring and deserving the confidence of his countrymen- In asking the American people to indorse the Republican record and to renew their commission to the Republican party we remind them of the fact that the menace to their prosperity has always resided in Democratic principles and no lees in the general incapacity of the Democratic party to conduct public affairs The prime essential of business prosperity is public confidence in the good sense of the government and its ability to deal intelligently with each new problem of administration and legislation That confidence the Democratic party has never earned It is hopelessly Inadequate and the countrys prosperity when Democratic success at the polls Is announced halts aud ceases in mere anticipation of Democratic blunders and failures FOR TIlE GOLD STANDARD We renew our allegiance to the principle of the gold standard and declare our confidence in the wisdom of the legislation of the Fiftysixth Con gress by which the par ty of all our money and the stability of our currency on a gold basis has been secured We recognize that interest rates are a potent factor in production and business activity and for the purpose of fur ther equalizing and further lowering the rates of interest we favor such monetary legislation as will enable the varying needs of the season and of all sections to be promptly met in order that trade may be evenly sustained labor steadily employed and commerce enlarged The volume cf money In circulation was never so great per capita as it is today We declare our steadfast opposition to the free and unlimited coinage of silver No measure to that end could bo considered which was without the support of the leading commercial coun tries of the world However firmly Republican leulstetion may seem to have secured the country against the peril of base and discredited currency the election of a Democratic President could not fall to impair the countrys credit and to bring once more into question the intention of the American people to maintain upon the gold standard the parity of their money circulation The Democratic party must be convinced that the American people will never tolerate the Chicago platformiWe recognjze the necessity and propriety of the honest cooperation of capital to meet new business conditions and especially to extend our rapidly Increasing foreign trade but we condemn all conspiracies and comblnatina intended to restrict business to create monopolies to limit production or to control prices and favor such legislation as will effectually restrain and pre vent all such abuses protect and promote competition and secure the rights of producers laborers and all who are engaged in industry and commerce PROTECTION FOR AMERICAN LABOR We renew our faith in the policy of protection to American labor In that policy our industries have been established diversified and maintained By protecting the home market the competition has been stimulated and production cheapened Opportunity to the inventive genius of our people has been securedandwages In every department of labor maintained at high- with recitation or essay committed to memory by Mr Berryman and closed by Miss Agnes Soinx Dan Willett a handsome young Kentuckian on Famous Kentuckians won the blue ribbon in my opinion aqy how by reciting a synopsis of the most characteristic specimens of Kentucky brains from Clay down to dazzling minds of the present day The band falling to play Old Kentucky Home was the only regret Mr A 0 Burton delivered the diplo mas to the graduates in a neat brief ad dress He introduced Prof Kelley of Owensboro who made a most pleasing eloquent talk paying Mr Burton a glow ing tribute and referring to the dozen in a marvelously pathetic word picture of the life before them Mr Burton then bade an affectionate farewell to his friends pupils and pat rons not forgetting to mete out praise to the old
