found It necessary to wear a button In order to do business The saleswomen In large establish ments were provided with buttons and every customer who did not wear a button was reminded thatono was necessary to make purchases The streets soon glistened with the white celluloids and the bearer of the dinner pall and the occupant of tho brougham were equal In this they owned stock In convention hall and wore buttons to prove It By this and many other schemes the money was raised and the hall built On the night of Feb 22 1800 It was opened Fully 20000 stockholders In the hall heard the first crash of Sousas band from the giant sounding board In the north end of the halL When the concert was ended the chairs and can vas covering were removed from the arena floor In 14 minutes and 1000 that It should be as nearly fireproof as possible that It should be rebuilt n time for the national Democratic con ventionWhen convention hall burned the company had 10000 cash In bank By the evening of that day this amount had grown to 10230 On Thursday the next day a mass meeting was held and the amount grew to 43000 by vol untary subscriptions Another mass meeting was held on Saturday and the Oloverport and this re calls to my memory many eoclal and business events connected with his per sonal life and business career On the 7th day of December 1855 I was employed by the Breckenrldge Coal Company at Bennettaville now Vic toria and was in the service of this com pany four years and three monthe and about one half of this time I was in the Oil yard Oloverport I was airs in the employ of Gulley Rodgers after the coal and oil company suspended business Previous to my first visit to Oloverport in December 1855 Mr Mar tin had erected a large two story brick building on the southwest cornerof Wall and Elm streets now the BRECKBXRIDCIE NEWS office and this was at that time considered a bold undertaking for a small town merchant of limited means The first story of this house had two store room one of them was occupied by Mr Martins general supply store and the other I think by P V Duncan Cox The second story was fitted up for a public hall and for years was used for roll gious meetings school exhibitions shows public speaking etcl in all of which Mr Martin took a deep interestt During the summer of 1850 I think it WM the friends of ex President Millard OTlmore at that time a candidate for reelection gave a barbecue in honor of him The picnic ground was in a grove on the bank of Clover Oreek above the steam mills of Pierce and Sattctflold Col Humphrey Marshall and Major Hancock were the orators of the day Major Hancock spoke first and after he had addressed the people about an hour Col Marshall arrived at the stand accompan led by an escort of horsemen which John 0 Martin had organized and which be called Lighthorse Mr Martin bad after organizing his company marched to the hotel and at the appoin ted time escorted Col Marshall to the stand Just at the close of Major Han cocks speech Aa Pol Marshall moun ted the stand the cheering voices for Gapfc Martin and his men drowned the musIc of the Cannelton braes band MajJ or Hancock introduced Col Marshall and Rev April Oth 1802 t waa wounded by a 12 pound bomshell which ruined the eight of my light eye and burned my face in a most hideous manner I was takell off the field blind and bleeding and led on- board steamer crowded with the woun ded which took us down the river to Savannab Tenn where I received the best of medical treatment and in a week I secured permission to return to my regiment to be treated by our own sur geon About two weeks after the battle of Shiloh while standing under the shade of a large oak tree in our camp Isaw Capt Win Davidson of Company B an orderlySergeant Samuel K Cox of for they all stopped and looked at me Sergeant Cox now President of the Ohio County Bunk spoke to mo and said VellEddie how is your wounded face 1 told him that it was improving slowly and as I spoke I saw that the gentleman in black was John 0 Martin that I had known years before at 01overport Ivy and I said in a loud voice How do vou do Mr Martin He did not speak but started towards me and though I knew him to be a brave man he looked horror stricken when he came to me and saw my frightful looking lace and the lred blood stain on my military Jacket for I was yet a private soldier I talked to him or our many dealings at Oloverport and how often we had seen each other and of the many people I knew there but I could not make him recollect ma He talked in a very friend ly and interesting manner to me as only a well bred and Intelligent gentleman can and told me that one of the ladles was Capt Davidsons mother of Hawesville and the other was her sister Mrs Capt Sawyer of Cloverport and that Sergeant Coxs mother was a sister to them which accounted for him remaining 9n their company while they were in our camp Mrs Sawyer before she married Capt Sawyer was the widow Lamar and John 0 Martin was her son Inlaw Mrs Sawyers youngest son John Lamar was a confederate soldier and she had heard that he had been killed wounded or taken prisoner at the battle of Shiloh This they afterwards learned was all a mistake as he was at that time with the confederate army at Corinth Miss Mr Martin talked with me some time told all the news he had from Clover port wished me a speedy recovery from my wounds and a safe return to my Ken tacky home and after pressing my hand in friendly farewell he rejoined his party at the tent of Capt Davidson I dont recollect seeing Mr Martin but once since we met on the field of Shiloh apd that was on the streets at Clover port during the summer of 1860 He was there on some business and was walking fast when I met him andsaid How do you do Mr Martini He stopped turned round andasked who I was and after I had told him I asked him if he didnt remember meeting me In our camp on the field of Shiloh and at the same time showed him the scars on my face He said he had no recollection of seeing me at Shiloh or any other place and appeared to regret not recollecting me as a citizen or soldier though he told me all about his visit
