PRESENT One of the most enjoyable events of the season was the dinner given Mr Gardner Hawkins by his daughter Mrs L R Atkieaon on toe fifteenth of the present month it being the 74th aunt vereary of his birthday The party consisted of his nine grAndchildren The dinner was made up of all that goes to make a meal tempting good thingi enough to tickle the palate of a Vanderbilt The table was artistically arrang ed and covers were laid for ten Twc lovely bouquets of flowers were placed at either end of the long table In the cen ter was placed the large birthday cake looking like a little mountain of snow around the base of which were the words Grandfathers Birthday composed of evergreens on a white background At the plate of each of the little ones was a tiny snow white cake encircled by a green wreath the cakes bearing the Initial of each child Then there were candles nuta fruits and lemonade When dinner was announced the Grandfather led the way followed byes pretty a eot of little ones as is often seen Seated at one end of the table was the Grandfather next to him on hia right and left were his two oldest grand child dren Lslla Bille Hawkins and Hewit Dix Next came Pauline Hawkins and Cecil Dix then Harold Hawkins and Nancy Lee Hawkins and Gardner Hawkins Jr and Marion Dix At the Other end of the table seated in his high chair like one having authority was Sherman Hawkins the ten months old baby of Mr and Mrs Hewit Hawkins It was a happy occasion and only one thing marred the perfect enjoyment that beingtbe absence of one of the grand children Jamie Owen Hawkins who was off at cchool Each little ono brought hie dear grandfather a present in token of their great love for him among the many little presents was five dollars in gold from one of the little boye Mrs Atkisaon was assisted by her sIs- ter Mrs Uewit Hawkins in serving It was a day of great pleasure and will never be forgotten I think it is so nice for these milestones in our lives to be re membered and made a happy spot to which memory can turn with pleasant thoughtsHow memory will turn to the dear mother who has long been folded in her last sleep and how she alwayaremem bered our birthdays The cake might not have been better than other cake but the fact that it was our birthday cake gave it a flavor surpassing all others Years may pass and brothers and sisters may be scattered and best known cltlzjns died at his apartments in thin city Monday evening at 030 oclock after a brief Jllnesa The deceasedwas In the 70h year of his age and has been closely associated with the business interest of Uuioutown since first locating here in the year of 1870 Although quite an old man he was re Althoughhenumber ofyears he was thought to be hi comparatively good health Last week at tend the burial John 0 Martin was born in Stuben ville Ohio on the 21st day of August 1821 After gaining an excellent educa tion at Augusta College in Brackin county Kentucky he went to Cincin nati where he engages in business He remained in Cincinnati till 1839 when be fitted up a trading boat and started down the Ohio and on down the Missis sippi into the Gulf He continued in the store boating business until 1847 He then settled in Cloverport Ky and there engaged In merchandising until 1800 He moved to Hawesville in 1802 and there remained untll1874 when he went to Newburg Ind and remained there two years In 1870 he came to Uniontown where he has since resided a respected citizen The deceased has been connected in a business way with manv local enterprises At the time of his death he was acting as a pension agent for a number tf years he has done quite a large amount of business in this line The deceased is survived by a widow and three children The children are all grown and reside elsewhere Capt Martin as he was familiarly known in Uniontown will be missed by Isis many friends here and the memory of one who has so long been associated with this community will live on mid same city of such renown getting a regular ninteenth century move on her and voluntarily pledging to pay into the treasury of the Republican Committee one hundred thousand dol lars for the party campaign fund There is always a spirited contest between dif ferent cities for the location of a conven Uon It seems that a substantial con tribution to the party campaign fund cuts a big figure of late years and almost every dollar of Philadelphias pledge has been paid I have a very distinct recol lection of the conventions of 1680 84 and 92and a vivid one of 00 In the Re publican convention of 1880 the nomi nation of a presidential candidate almost turned upon the settlement of certain contested cases The unseating of Grants delegates made his nomination impOEsible and Garfields nomlnationre snlted in 1888 there were several con tested case contests that often engender bitter feelings Igueea all of us who took any interest in the campaign of 1800 remember the delegates whose seats were contested over a hundred in the Republican Convention and we all re memberiwbat an important part the Ne braskan contest over rival delegations played on the Democratic convention of 180C It was this contest from his own state between the gold and silver Democracy that gave the gentleman from the raging Platte prominence in that convention How quickly all eyes were turned towards him
