MOORS i J H STEWART- A T WOOD JAMES DENTON LAWSON RENO c J J J GOV W S TAYLOR GIVEN AN OVATION Gov W 8 Taylor in response to aI unanimous call spoke as follows FelloI citizens t am deeply moved by this de monstration on your part We bave all suffered and toiled together in the cause of human liberty aud to that sacred cause for you for our children and for our God I swear eternal allegiance Liberty cau not and shall not die from the fair land of Kentucky aa long as man hood lives within its bounds The bal lot box the corner stone of every true Republican institution shall not be de stroyed and the liberties of the people shall yet survive Tyrants may triumph for a while wrongs may be perpetrated some time but they can not always tri umph Somewhere and in some way godly manhood will assert itself and tri umph over wrong and the banner of the free will be unfurled again in this fair land of ours The frauds that have tak en your liberties from you and over turned the liberties of our people are a stench in the nostrils of decency and ua long as time shall last it will be known of all men that a great wrong agalnet suffering people has been perpetrated It is the black spots that will not rub out aud wherever it is read wherever the truth is known it will alwav be said that the will of the people of Kentucky was trampled in the duet I know it shall not always be so and why Be cause 1 tell you now the ballot must be free or this republic will die This Union this compact of State can not exist many years with a part of them free and a part of them slaves The constitution of Kentucky in the bill of rights in the very Ark of the Coyenant guarantees to every Kentuckian that allelections shall be free nnd iqunl That provision of the constitution has been trampled under foot It has been disregarded but the men that trampled that part of the constitution under their feet will live to curse the day that they commit ted that crime When the State of this Union entered into the covenant that made them a part of this great nation they had a guaranty put Into that cove nant that every State should have aRe puullcan form of government and I want to say now end here that the na tion that will not keep its pledge and give to every State a Republican form of government is not worthy of life A voice Hit them again Gov Taylor In all the history of the world men have longed for liberty They have climed mountains snow capped to find liberty they have plowed the deepest and billowy oceanto find a heaven where liberty was They have gone on the dusty road and marched and tram ped and In the field of battle and in the roar of cannon they have given their lives for liberty Their bones lie bleach ing all over the sunny South all over this land that died for liberty We gave our boys and our citizars to cross the ocean and die for liberty in the far away Philp pine Islands but here in this your own State is an island our own dear old Ken tucky home that needs liberating and needs freedom worse than they Applause I And I appeal to the manhood of Kentucky to say whether or not we had better set our own house right and see our own people free rather than waste time so far from home But my fellow citizens I have already talked much longer than I had intended There are others here who have been battling for liberty also and I Want yon to hear them I will part with this pledge to you This is sacred this warfare must never stop Your dear old State lies prostrate bleeding now but m Gods name her noble form shall be lifted up under that flag Keep up tho holy warfare and never tire Go to the ballot box stand by it and watch IL See that every man that is entitled to a vote is allowed to vote And more see that that ballot is counted as cast It does look like a gloomy and stubborn battle but God knows the right can win itt I can not tell you how In fact it must win but I want to ask you one thing j I want you to swear In your heart of hearts that this warfare shall never end until it is won- EXGOV BRADLEYSSTRONG SPEECH ExGov Bradley was given an ovation when be spoke as follows Mr Chairman and Gentlemen of the Convention I cannot help on this occa sion but think of tbe difference in the condition of our country today and its condition four years ago Then its work shops were closed hbor only half re warded no market whicii was worth anything In the way of renumeratlon for the farmer Now when we stand here today andl eee the greatest prosperity that this nation has ever enjoyed we bave a rght to be proud that we are Republicans We were told in the campaign of 1800 that all ports of calamities were coming upon the people and that if we had a a war our monetary system would be the destruction of our country but we have had a war a glorious war where our soldiers aud sailors have added the very brightest chapter to our history The arrogant country of Spain with all of its persecutions has been humbled in the dust and the American flag has more respect than it ever enjoyed before Wherever it waves it represents free dom slid prosperity and the noblest and greatest country that God has ever vouchsafed to man Applause Shall this continue The American people will soon decide and it will be a decision which will be so perfectly certain and eo overwhelming in number as to surprise us all The Republican administration will be upheld and the Republican can didate for President will be elected and prosperity will continue in the future as we have enjoyed it in the past But my friends not only have the Republicans of this Nation those who are in office given you a magnifi cent administration but thoce whom you selected more than four years ago to take charge of your state affairs have given you an administration of which you may well be proud Goy Taylor has told you something in1 regard to the condition of Kentucky affairs Island here today to denounce in most unmeasured terms the assassin who shot down Senator Goebel Whoever he is he deserves condign punishment for a deed that can have neither palliation nor excuse but mean as he is he is not onetenth as mean as the scoundrels who through the newspapers have under taken to assassinate the character of the manhood of Kentucky Let the guilty man be punished but in Gods name let not the innocent suffer A public press that has hounded your Governor with a venom and spleen that would do credit to a rattlesnake and not content with that has even dragged the name of his wife Into the public press Hisses and cries of enamel And when he was called to the grave of his brother still this malice pursued him and that he was fleeing from the State A sister died and when he went to her funeral again they said he was fugitive from justice Now I say that this scandalizing of a public man in Kentucky this thing of bringing into these foul prints the name of nearly every leading public man of the State this attempt to blacken and eras sinate human character is far more con temptlble corrupt and mean and devil ish than any murderer or assassin that takes human life They say that the Republican party has conspired to murder Senator Goebel I say that Is a lie The Republican party of Kentucky would scorn to steal an office they have not been elected to and let me tell you an assassin who takes lifo is mean and degraded beyond description and the assassin of human character is even meaner but there is another sort of a man that Is meaner than loth and that is the man who tramples upon the will of the people of his State in order to steal an office he could not be elected to They tell you the Republican party la dead CONFIDENCE IN THE SUPREME COURT A voice A very live corpse Gov Bradley The Republican party will nover lie as long as liberty lies a votary or freedom of men It came Into existence in the cause of liberty It has fought the great battles of liberty It Is strong now in the State of Kentucky There was a time in my young manhood when I first entered politics that we hag in this state of ours only 30000 votes but now we have polled as many as 277000 and I have no doubt on Gods earth that Gov Taylor at the last election polled that many or nearly that many votes Toe arrangement was made to count him outthe arrangement was made to de fraud the people and to corrupt the bat lot box but even with all that they could not beat him and then when they could not beat him they deliber ately stole the office But my friend mark my word for it they wont keep the office they stole I have no infor mation as to how the Supreme Couft will decide this case That court does not tell what it is going to do Applause But my friends I have confidence in an overwhelming Provi dence I have confidence in the right and I have confidence in the honor justice manhood and ability of every Judge who sits upon that magnificent bench If these things can go on in the State if there is no power in this nation that can stay the hand of the robber then I think instead of taking up our time to try to do something in the Philippines we bad better hire a few missionaries call them in from foreign lands and see what wo can do hero at home My friends it may be that Kentucky stands today in shame It may be that today the clouds are dark It may be that lien light is hidden but as sure as there Is a God who reigns over this world just so sure shall her manacles fall aud she shall stand forth redeemed regenerate and disentitled Well did Gov Tay lor say Let the holy war go on for it is a holy war When you are struggling to maintain your freedom when you are struggling for liberty when you are struggling to maintain those things which were bought by the blood of your fathers and sanctified by the prayers of your mothers you are indeed engaged in a holy war Let not a man be found who will tamely or idly surrender his manhood Let us stand forth for free elections for an honest election and let us call to our assistance those magnifi cent Democrats who have so bravely stood by us In all this great struggle that we have made No Republican and no man who loves liberty should ever forget such men as Breckeurldge Yost Knott Stewart Sweeney and a host of other Voices And Duckner BROWN DEMOCRATSCOMPLIMENTED By Gov Bradley Yes the grand old Confederate hero Simon Bolivar Buck nero and last but By no means least our distinguished exGov John Young BrownI know what Is going to become of this democratic party All the brains that they used to have have left them Brecklnndge Lindsay Buckner and Yost end all these distinguished menA voice And Carlisle Gov Bradley Yes A voice And Bill Owens Gov Gradley And my friend Bill Owens and a good man he is You talk about the abuse that is heaped up on the republican party of this State they have been abused for every thing on earth that was mean and that men could lay their tongue to Even the other day as I am told there appeared In an Eastern paper a picture of that good man John S Sweeney There is a man who for more than thirty years has preached the word of his Master oyer this state a man of spotless character a beloved minister of the Christian church and yet they have published his picture In a newspaper and charged that be was present at a crowd of men in which it was agreed that Senator Goebel should be murdered I say that hell is not half hot enough for such people But my friends I do not desire to detain you There are others here to speak others who are entitled to be heard but I want to say one thing howeyer to the Republicans of Kentucky If there bo- one of you who is despairing hold up your head and be a man In the vocabulary of that great party there is no such word as fall We will carry this State this fall by a majority of 20000 and It will be counted My friends I want every man to go away from this conven tion with a determination to do his duty by hit party and by his country Let every one of us go away from here feeI- ng that it was good that we met here Let us go away with renewed life and vigor and zeal to fight tho battle of free dom They cannot beat us 9 Now my friends I thank you fur your attentionA We want you for Vice Free dentGov Bradley Gentlemen I ain afraid that in your day and reins we will never lire to see a Vice President come from south ef the Ohio river We will con tent ourselves however by voting for andelecting a President north of the Ohio river and while we cannot expect to enter this charmed circle of holding the office of Vice President we can at least be high privates in the rear ranks and fight tbe battles of our country I thank you for your attention H MR R W KNOTTS SPEECH Mr Richard W Knott editor of tht Evening Post spoke as follows Mr Chairman and Gentlemen of the Convention I Pave consented as a cit izen of a disfranchised city to welcome youthe representatives of a disfranchised party Until every political party in the State of Kentucky has all rights ac corded to any other political party I can steak for myself and for my fellow citi zone and promise to a diefranchlebed party the vote of Louisville and Jeffer son county Applause I can not speak to you as a Republican and I will not today speak to you as a Democrat I speak only to the manhood Kentucky pledged here for a renewal of tho battle for freedom in Kentucky I care not on what field this battle is waged I care not what offices are 0 be filled I care little who are to be the leaders in this strife but wherever the foes of liberty are there they should be met Four years ago the State of Kentucky was disturbed and the parties in Ken tucky were shattered on a great national issue I am told that issue had been settled New issues have arisen but there is one issue and one alone in Ken tucky and that is whether ever again this State one of the first daughters of the American Unionehall again partici pate in the councils of the nation Kentucky can speak only by her chosen officers I care not whether It is in the Congress at Washington whether in the executive department at Frankfort or in the Legis lature or in the City Councils the people can speak only by their chosen repre sentatives and I pledge to the Republi can patty the support of all lovera of freedom not because of your party platform not because of your national can dictates but simply because your fight is the same as our fight it is a fight for civil liberty These gentlemen have talked to you about carrying on this holy war until the battle has been won That battle was fought out in the last campaign and was won and won for all time The difficulty in the way is to have that victory recorded and we are fighting simply for the public records we are fighting to have the courts and journals of vuur legislative bodies declare what the people decared that W S Taylor was elec ted Governor of Kentucky Mr Chairman that is all I can say That is all I would say to vou except that no battle was ever won yet against an organized party in power by a disor ganized mob Your volunteer armies are all right They are animated by the spirit of liberty and by an unconquera ble devotion to the flag but at last you have to win the fight by organization All of you can remember that when the Civil war broke out the government ofII the United States asked for ninety volunteers but you will remember that thn battles were won by the three year volunteers by the men who enlisted for the three years of the war Now fellow citizens the men who went out of the Democratic party have yet no party home They are simply your allies but I believe I can speak for that great host of Kentucky Democrats who did the thing last year and promise that these ninetyday volunteers have reenlisted for the three years Ap cam paign from the very word go on a higher plane of civilization than ever before especially that of 1890 which was one of bitterness and malevolence and will go down into history as such No one should shirk responsibility socially or politically Every man should take a position and maintain one side or the other in all issues that interest the peo pIe at large but with the same consider ation for others in feeling and opinion that he would ask for himself An Intellectual discussion of affairs is needed and every vote cast if it were possible shbnla be an intelligent one without prejudice and from conscientious conviction Of course the Democrats should get together and if the Hon John B Thompson of Kentucky who has been a life long Democrat and who was manage er for Wat Hardlns canvass were heed ed or his suggestions they might Sure ly they are not undemocratic or unfair still one wing condemns his ideas While not endorsing all each Is worthy of consideration The Republicans may be divided on some Issues such as the Puerto Rican Bill the Canal Bill Ac but watch them in November 1000 The Democrats will squabble over more than one issue and never try to get down to an intelligent idea of expansion They confound it with imperialism The south had better find out the difference for expansion true expansion means volumes to her The monetiry elephant will cause the biggest division as in 1890 Strorg Minded Women in last issue of the NEWS by a brilliant Kentucky wo man Mrs Lida Calvert Hall was sweep ing in its denunciation of women who are not In favor of suffrage for the rex Any woman with an atom of common sense she savs will not say she does not with to vote while such political conditions exist in our State She wants some di vine power to rain down the commodity on Kentucky womunso that any line II their work will lead to woman suffrage She believes suffrage is near at hand but that it will be forced upon ui like it was in New Orleans One accusation I resent warmly by that Kentuckian whose article appeared in a Boston pa per vzWoman tins no idea of jus tics On the contrary I want to say in stentorian tonesWomau thy name lid justict I would like for Mrs Calvert to point out how in the name of all thats good and holy woman suffrage could have prevented the assassina tion of Mr Goebel Does she believe honestly that women would or could purify politics It is not necessary for us to array ourselves against any one set of men or any particular short coming but against the general deficiency which is felt at every turn in politics We can accomplish it more effectually by our in fluence outside than in the active arena We can thus assist voters to pledge themselves to higher standards and a patient effort to create it The writer in question eays Mr Goebela fearful un timely death united his party If the chasm isnt deeper and wider than be lore I have failed to read between lines aright and if women required such a tragedy to arouse them to a sense of civic responsibilities they are to be pitied and certainly do need a rain of something fire and brimstone perhaps The only thing the matter with Ken tucky is that she happens to be last in the calendar of political eruptions which have occurred elsewhere and North of Mason and Dixon line as well as in the South Vesuvius Is now in a state of eruption belching out lava Just so ever pod limon political par ties undergo a similar state when the revolution and eruption subside and only I a little smoke ascends Women get ting into the mesa would not exting utah the lUmes any sooner or cause the explosive material to subside any quicker Let their influence be wielded outside as always and men will revere hon or and respect and heed their counsel far more readily than by voting with him side by side Let us glance over at Boise Idaho how the men were fought on their own ground The women were out in full force the polls were surroun dad by them Two of them of opposing parties had a betted argument became excited and called each other all kinds of names then came an actual collision Are they purifying politics Do men have tho same desire to defend and pro tect such disputants A jury was Impaneled to try the case when another scene occurred behind closed doors and the sheriff interfered We cannot han die pilch without soiling our hands We cannot enter politics without becoming entangled in the very quintessence of mannish proceeding I want all women to read up and be acquainted with the mportant issues of the day All women could be patriotic Every womau should love her State her country honor her flag and have a preference in political questions but I have never been able to see why she should wish to vote or get into active politics As to the necessity ofh1he Womens Emergency Associa tion to direct the attention ot women to the importance of using their influence in behalf of good citizenship I pity any woman or jet of women who need an as soclatlon to awaken them to a proper knowledge of civic responsibilities Every intelligent good woman has an Influence in a community and it is ac knowledged and respected She wields it at the polls through tho voters of her home or her social circle Id like for Mrs Calyert or Mrs any body else to tell me what the Association accom plished Prominent men did all the talking at laat of whom Mrs Qalvert makes extremely lightliThe salvation of our country has ever depended in a great measure upon her women not as voters but in the training and rearing of voters Women have forethought eye tem care in detail discipline organiza tion energy and patience and a keen sense of justice and they have an inter eating way of their own in rising to the occasion when needed Any sympolum bearing on civic responabllity should interest them and does and their jIn flence is realized Once at the polls in the maelstrom of the scene itself her femininity her true womanliness will l diminish I Bales He never saw an ocean liner until his visit hero lie was interested and asked many questions The names of some of the big boats pleased him- laraRladS to see ho said that there is some sentiment in the business I am not a dreamer but I sometimes think the age is too commercial We even name our children for somebody who is expected to do something for the honor It has come to that in my state newell as in other states We have few steamboats now on the MIs- souri River but those few are named for individuals who presented a bell or a piano or a flag or something in consideration of their names haying been painted on the wheel houses of the boats lint it was not alwayo so There was a time when we named our boats from sentiment the same thing I see has governed the naming of some of these big steamersliners I believe you call them and one I saw was pointed out to me as an ocean greyhound One of the first steamboats I ever saw on the Missouri was named High land Mary That was fortyfive years ago But I know the owner called his boat that just because the name struck his fancy I dont suppose he ever heard of Bobby Burns Polar Star was the name of a favorite packet and her owner and captain was a farmer named Tom Brlerly He had a farm in Bucha nan County twenty miles back from the river and he lived there in winter He ran the Polar Star until she got to old to be safe and then he built another and a finer boat and called it the Morn ing Star But somehow that one was not as successful as the Polar Star and it quittheOne of the fastest boats on tho river was the Minnehaha She took the horns for making thejqulckest time be tween St Louis and St Joe It was some time though before tbe people of the river towns knew how to pronounce popularity Hiawatha but she was not the favorite the Minnehaha was and was soon trans ferred to the Mississippi trade The Peerless was what her name indicated and she beat the I1nnehahas time and took the horns We had the Twilight Cataract War Eagle Reindeer White Cloud and Silver Heels Finally a company of St Louis men built the James U Lucas The man for whom that boat was named was a millionaire in St Louis and as theLucas was the fastest boat of her time Mr Lucas presented her with a piano and a lot of silverware That was the begin ning of the breaking up of sentiment in steamboat nomenecature on the Missouri Moneyed men in the river towns invested in steamboat building and the rich eat man in the town was usually selected to bestow his name on the boat and I never knew one who refused Then they got to naming some of the boats for a town and the citizens in that case bought the presents and they would pa tronize no other boat if they could help it Once in awhile some sentimental Incident would govern the naming of the craft As for an example There was a young woman in Glasgow who was a uni versal favorite and her hand was sought by many A new boat was building which was to be captained by a young man who was infatuated with the young woman He won her and that was why the boat was named Kate Howard There was another instance where sentiment named a popular boat The captain of an old steamer was taken sick in one of the towns and was nursed by a widow who had a daughter The cap tain recovered and built a new boat He was a married man but he named his boat Martha Jewell for the widows daughter and because she used to bring him flowers when he was sick That sort of sentiment didnt bring in any pi ano but it made the boat mighty pop- ularN Y Sun After suffering from piles for York says a writer In Suc cess he had a clerk BO ungracious in manner that he frequently remained seated while callers at the capitol were obliged to remain standing as they attempted to transact business with him One day a delegation came from a city in the western part of the state to plead for the life of a condemned man The Governor was seldom known to grant a pardon but the visitors hoped at least that they would be accorded a proper hearing After the clerk had kept them waiting for two hours in the outer hall way he admitted them and accorded them permission to state their case to to the Governorall standing The ex ecutive reluscd to interfere and told his visitors so The spokesman of the little party was Grover Cleveland then a Buffalo attor ney In one year after the trip referred to he was himself elected Governor of the state When he visited the execu tive chamber a few days thereafter Gov Cornell showed him over the apartments and inquired if there was anything he wished to have done in advance of his inaugurationThere Just one thing you can do for me if you will said Mr Cleveland and that Is to remove theclork who kept me waiting outside so long when I was last here It may teach him a lesson in politeness The clerk was removed Cured A Running Sore I had a bad running sore on my breast for over a year says Henry R Richards of Willseyville N Y and tried a As Necessary As Clerks A well knownmerchant says I would as soon think of doing business without clerks as without advertising The fact Is that if he should not advertise he would not need the army of clerks which he now employs for there would be nothing for them to do Advertising therefore not only helps in the selling of goods but in providing employment for workpeople Ex Agents on salary of Industrial schools will be found everywhere Every joung man or boy should be skilled in some trade Id ID CM as in olden dyf should be punished as a crime Econo my frugality temperance truth hon esty and industry the basic principles of all religion make happy wise and contented people Give a boy a trade or profession combined with a good character and if he is too far gone in depravity to wake use of such fotce him to use them for the State We have too many schools now for the higher professions Of law and medicine What we need are schools where our youth can be taught to control and utilize the God given orces of nature and thus give him or her the grandest education he or she can claim This question is of more impor geueratlonlie looked alter and directed with wisdom by competent methods For the first time inlho history of the diocese of Kentucky tho openIng sermon was preached by a colored minister last Tuesday In Christ Church Cathedral at Louisville The Eplspocal church has done and is doing a big work for the colored people in religious life Dear Bishop Dudley a Southerner andaVirginian prsaches often for them in their church of The Merciful Saviour The social question Is easily solved by the Southern man The colored mans best friend is the South With all of the inflammatory articles in northern papers statistics show that there are more crimsH committed in proportion to population in the North by neproen than in the South The colored man was given the ballot without education or in formation The ballot is not always an educating influence even in our own race The South is in favor now of uni versal elevation ofall mankind It should be thoughtful kind and humanl tanIan and we all know the colored race needs manual moral and educational training We of th South are bound to accept our I resent situation The igno rant colored voters and the white ones too should be taken out of politics Theres no longer any plea for ignorance The black and white man must help each other Our colored people form the backbone of our labor system The colored man wants to Ret out of politics and turn his attention to Industry edu cation and morals Gov W B Taylor received a perfect ovation at the Auditorium in Louisville when be entered the body of the State Republican Convention Taylor and Bradley were chosen by acclamation as delegates to the National Convention June 10 in the Quaker City ExGov Bradieys speech was dramatic The audi ence went wild when Gov Taylor wanton the platform His party sticks to him like the Democrats did to Mr Goebel This is a free country remember I am glad Mr Bradley said We have had a war a glorious war with Spain and she has been humbled in the dust I am still glader that he saIdliThe American flag is today more respected than ever and that wherever it floats it represents freedom prosperity and the noblest country that God smIles on I am over Joyed that he denounced the assassin who shot down Senator Goebe I rejoice that ho as bitterly denounced any man Democrat or Republican who assassi nated the manhood of Kentucky The public press I want to say has no right to hound a man with venom and spleen and drag his name down because he opposes him in political belief Mr Goebel euQered thus and Gov Taylor likewise Such deliberate scandalizing of our public men is an outrage such attempts to blacken their character is a stigma upon the whole of Kentucky An assassin of character Is as mean and contemptible as the one who takes life be he Democrat or Republican and I want to applaud the exGovernor for his allusion to magnificent Democrats who have so bravely stood for free elections for honest elections Breckenridge Lindsay Buckner Yost Carlisle I want to applaud and encore and call them back again and again because those magnificent time honored glorious Jeffersonian Democrats were named even if Carlisle isnt an expansionist I reverence and honor him like I do ex President
