j suffrage work that needed special atten I tion in this State at the present time t l YAs nearly as I can remember my reply 11 ifollowsi conditions in our State i 7 are such thatI do not see how any woman with an atom of common sense can say that she does not want to vote b if some divine power would only rain taI down a little common sense on the wo fe men who need it any line of work i vld lead speedily to woman suffrage t but without that divine interposition no rtUne of work can possibly prove effective This sounds pessimistic but I do not feel r pessimistic at all I believe that woman 4suffrage is near at hand but It is going to be forced on the women of Kentucky by some unexpected combination of circum stances just as it was forced on the wo men of New Orleans The average wo manias no sense of justice She will have to learn the expediency of woman suffrage before she sees its justice When I wrote these words Id id not dream that their fulfilment lay very near at hand and that it would be written l in blood on the pages of Kentuckys history A few weeks later came the assassination of Goebel the climax of all Kentuckys bloody deeds The unexpected combination of circumstances had occurred at last A few weekslater still and the Louis r yille Courier Journal announced that i The Womens Emergency Association i would hold a meeting for the purpose of directing the attention of women to A importance and necessity of using 1rbtit influence in behalf of good citizen i ship1 Hero Was the fulfillment of my words Goebels death had not only reunited his party but It had awakened r =x the women of his State to realization of r their civic responsibilities The mass meeting was held and theti speakers were the most eminent among the citys clergy There was a great amount of eloquence and enthusiasm but between Bishop Dudley and Rev Carter Helm Jones the women of Ken i tucky will have a hard time finding out Who they are and what they are and where they are at in this political 4 crisis First came Bishop Dudley who said i that all the good qualities of man are due to woman and thatIItbe mightiest bravestt and best men in this country t have been wIdow sons and that itbo country la full of good men who never had a fathers influence to guide themI Then came the Rev Carter Helm Jones who declared that the men of Ken tacky are just as good as the women want good qualities of men are due to women what part does man play in the scheme of evolution It he tljo source of all ovllIIs he a mere nonentity capable of ceiving good but not capblo of transmitting it It is a new and queer theory of heredity that the Bishop presents and no woman who respects her husband or her father will be likely to assent to the proposition that all the good in hu manity Is derived from wpman Follow ed out to their logical conclusion Bish op Dudleys statements mean that the beet thing Kentucky fathers can do In to lie down and die and leave the rearing of their sons entirely to the mothers of the State which would be a very undesirabe condition for all concerned Let us see if there is not some middle ground be tween the eulogy of the Bishop and the depreciation of Mr Jones The attitude of these gentlemen to wards women in politics reminds me of Englands attitude towards her common soldiers asset forth in one ol Kiplings Barrack Room Ballads Oh itsTommy this ordered to the front and informed that we are the eaviours of our country I And it is darkly intimated that if we render our fellow men any assistance in their trouble it is no more than we ought to do since we are mainly responsible for It all You perhaps remember the protest of Tommy Atkins We arent no thin red eroea and we arent no blackguards too But single men in barracks most te markable like you And if sometimes our conduck isnt all your fancy paints Why single men in bflrricks dont grow into plaster saints We women are not the plaster saints that Bishop Dudley would make us out to be nor are we as bad as the other side sees us We are just plain human beings most remarkable like men And If sometimes our conduck Isnt all your fancy paints why please remember that you cannot expect disfran chised class to grow into heroes and patriots any more than you can expect single men in barricks to become plaster saints The Rev Carter Helm Jones finds that the Ideals of women are at the bottom of all this political trouble and if wo men will only raise their Ideals the millennium will begin right hero in Kentucky politics Undoubtedly wo men are wrong In a great many ways their women The most reasonable utterances at the maes meeting were front the men who questioned our civilisation rewe a 1 civilized people said Mr Temple Bodley while Rabbi Moses rightly de clared that we are in a certain s nse pagans To Mr Bodleys question there is but one answer It has been only a few years since the Equal Rights Association after ten years of hard work swept from the siatutn books of Ken tucky every vestige of the barbarous common law of England as it related to tho property rights of married women and there are still laws ofour statute books laws relating to women and children that would disgrace the pagans I think that centuries hence when a nobler race reads the dark page of his tory that Kentucky has recently writ ten for herself the comment will be But what could be expected from peo pIe whose ideals of womanhood were so low that their women were clasrd polite cally with minors idiots lunatics an I criminals HWanting that the ideals of women wrong and that these ideals have caused I all the political trouble in Kentucky still we women cannot justly be blamed for womens ideals have always beenI mauufactured by men Men have saidI to women Thus must you think thu must you speak thus must you act an women have obediently thought spoken and acted in accordance with the orders from headquarters Womans IiSiiral off government was framed by man her ideal of ideal woo man is one whose sphere is the home Wifehood and motherhood are the high est honors to which she aspires Sh I must be a good cook Bud a good seam stress and a good housekeeper She must keep the buttons sewed on and darn the socks and obey her husband I and always meet him with a smile and if she will only do this we men will at tend to everything outside tbe sphere I and all will be lovely The women oft Kentucky with a few unimportant ex ceptions have kept this ideal of womanhood enshrined in their inmost hearts They havo bowed down to fit and worshipped it dally They haveI kept within their sphere and they have shuddered with horror at the mere sug gestion of voting J and now if thelrideals s are to blame forthe murder the assassin atlon tho political anarchy that disgraces Kentucky let ua ol be just enough to go one step farther in the chain of cause and effect aud lay that blame on the shoulders of the men who framed these ideals and forced them on the hearts and the consciences of weak womenThe few unimportant exceptions who did not accept the manmade ideals were known as strong minded women I love that adjective atrong minded The whole story of the woman movement Is in that one word The difference between the woman who conservative and the one who is progressive between the wo man who accepts tho ideal man makes for her and the woman who prefers to make her own Ideals is that the latter is strongminded and the former Isnot And if the women of Kentucky are to save tho State by means of their Ideals aa tho Rev Carter Helm Jones tells them to do they must begin the good work by getting strongminded Elder Powell one of the speakers at the great moss meeting said that Ken tucky women must carry religion into politics How in the world are we to carry religion into politics when the cry goes eternally up from press and from pulpit You must keep out of politics Politics is not your sphere The home is your sphere and the State is mans The State rests on the home and If you manage the affairs of your home pro perly that will be service enough to the StateThe Courier Journal reporter said These 1600 or more women eat there and listened with breathless Interest while the citys foremost speakers among the clergy told them that the salvation of the State and Its politics de pended upon them that the civilization of Kentucya people and tho reputation of the State depended on their efforts and there was not a woman present but left the building firmly resolved to do all she could for the enlightment and betterment of the people of this dropped into the real estate office of Dr R L Newsotns Monday and waa ehovjn apiece of log three feet in length that came out of Hardins Fort erected one hundred and twenty years ago near Uardinsburg tho county seat of this county by the celebrated Indian fighter Gen William Hardin dorayedmany years yet There are a few of the old style nails projecting about three quarters of an inch on the outside As I this is the last ef the logs the owner przes it as a valuable relic Gen William flardln was a pioneer of this county and a frontiersman of the true type He and a few of his neigh bore among whom were the Claycombs Brashears Brnners Bargers H ynseses Rices Jollys Barre Deans Spencers and others penetrated the wilderness of Ken tucky about the year 1780 Gen liar din and three other companions the names of whom cannot be recalled wore in seaich of a suitable location for his colony They reached the falls of the Ohio but finding a settlement and the nature of the country was too swampy they reembarked and floated down the placid waters of the Ohio to the mouth of Sinking Creek where they anticipated the exploration of the adjacent country j Hero they embarked into the midst of a band of hostile savages The Indians allowed them the privilege of going some three miles in the country whenff they divided one party taking POf8 lon of tho boat while the other pursued the whites Signs of Indians were discovered and naturally they became on the alert realizing they were being pursued by a superior body of savages aud knowing the folly of the fight they pushed on to has been ex plored a considerable distance and has become noted for its coolness and pure air It lisa been stated that fresh meats have been stored away in the cave and known to keep for a period of years The entrance of tho cave is lined with wood and there yet remains the door One remarkable feature of it is a con stant flow of the purest water A number of cabins surrounded this Fort and It is a curious fact that a Sabbath School teacher rarely considers it poeslble for her to teach at home she feels it necessary to have the adjuncts of pastor church and superintendent to put her in the proper frame of mind to Impart spiritual truth Not so this mother her religion was within her inspiration was on her Godand herreward the benefit she bestowed upon her family With out any announcement even a word to open the exercise but informally as on any other day the young lady daugh ter seated herself at the piano and accompanied a hymn which all sang and it was succeeded by many more so that each enjoyed a favorite Finally the mother turned to her husband and asked Do you know I had not realized the exquisite beauty in the verses of to days leeeon before But it is all beautiful and helpful and inexpressibly precious and she gave a loving little pat to the Bible she held in her hand and proceeded to tellwhat seemed to her the point of the lesson not negligently and as if half ashamedlot what she was doing but earnestly as though it were a matter of Infinite importance to her So very earnest web she that before we had realised it all the little party had re her little flock situated so that social intercourse was a rare pleasure Her duty was to spend and be spentfor her own regardless of their apt preciation she had no hoar of her very own but while the other adult mem eers of the family were indulging in privacy she read or better still told I stories to the little ones IN THE AFTERNOON When the clock chlmud three we a gain sought the library and as mother entered the door she cried cheerily Let me tell you something Arent they charming words let me tell you something and they hold a vast power for fixing attention I met dear old Mrs Rogers the last day I was in town and she told me something which she said I was to ask you on the first rainy Sabbath so now Is my time It seems that she has made a lot of riddles Bible riddles she calls them this is a specimen who can gneislt Who lived in tents And paid no rents And in sobriety Formed the first Temperance Society Much wrinkling of brows and many random guesses ensued but we had to be told the famous folks were the Recbabltes Now Mrs Rogers wants you to guess when the first donation party was given Donation party In the Bible It was too absurd But mother triumphantly explained When the Israelites met and gave their jewelry to Aaron to make the golden calfA few more of Mrs Rogers riddles In spired us to try our skill in concocting them and the family rhymester naked The lion which he slew Yes Then she who solved that problem had the privilege of propounding another the only clew given to the guessers being the kingdom to which the object thought of belonged the Information leading to knowledge of the object being obtained by questions It was delight ful and I am persuaded that the game of twenty questions if persisted in will develop the most ordinary individual to a lawyer and detective combined The smaller children finding this rather difficult pleaded for something easier and the resourceful mother responded at once In this wayIII am thinking of with a fork till thoroughly mixed then sprinkled with tall 1 it WM delicious After a light tea in the library a handsome young fellow whose appearance brightened the eyes of the daughter of the house came for the eye ning Conversation was pleasant and mandolin and guitar furnished music which WM not only sacred bet beauti ful then after this happy well spent Sabbath I again sought the rest and bliss to be found In the depths of that featherbed IK UT ROOM My friend after her own sweet kind ly fashion followed me to my room for a wee bit talk after the day WM done When the door WM closed I turned and gently pushing her into the easiest chair aakedAre you worn threadbare This day that has been so delightful so full of entertainment hu yet boon a day of rest to us while you have labored through every hour ot it I am just a little bit tired but the work my Father has given me shall I not do And she smiled Tell mu about it I urged bow have you managed to work up to an ideal Sabbath like this Was it not a hard thing to doand wondrously hard to begin Yes hard to begin that Is al ways the chief trouble in every under taking it is so hard to begin I begun this when the first children were mere infants and on I was so self conscious at first I felt you know as if I were on ly acting a part but I kept right on re gardless of that and now it comes quite naturally I see it does ejaculated but how did you succeed in workingtbe husband and children up to the same point This way if sou are really in earnest about a thing every one soon seesltand as nothing is so contagious as earnestness they become Imbued with the same spirit During the week while my hands are busy my mind is not idle and it is then I gather the material to maze the Sabbath interesting But that is so much work for you I obJ- ected Pleasant work though and I am sustained in the effort by the mem ory that it makes my children happy and satisfies them at home their hap piness is mine you know I asked Do all country houses have Sabbaths like this one I cannot tell about that but I know that any woman how ever little originality she may be endow ed with can make a happy day right along these lines Never yet was that woman born who could not tell tales and ask riddles When does the time come for your individual pleasure I am particular that the children shall be early to bed and then I have two good hours with my husband my bookor my thoughts In addition to this I hope to have whole years of ease and comfort alter the little folks havebeen trained up in the way they should go now is my working time and I do not mean to idle throughitON DAYS THAT ARE SUNNY But all Sabbaths are not dreary as to weather and when it is pleasant and roads are good we have a long nice ride the pleasant meeting with friends and on the way home lunch out of a big basket of good things which were prepared and packed the dav before Lunch on the way home I Why do that Oh the two little ones like it it seems gypsy style to them and then the ride has made all of us too hungry to wait But the strongest reason is that after arriv ing at home my daughter and I can rest in place of going immediately to work preparing food and clearing after it Tell me what you do on pleasant after noons You see we cannot use the same means of entertainment always that we used this afternoon we would weary of it On good days the children and I pass the whole time out of doors If we walk to the sheepfold I ask who was the Shepherd King and we specu late on tho thoughts and feelings of David when he tended his fathert sheep j and we talk lovingly of the one great Shepherd who gave his life for hit sheep In the grape arbor we go back to Abel who is supposed to be the first agriculturist we wonder if the horses go to heaven and if not why they are mentioned as being in the New Jerusa lem There is nothing on the farm which we meet up with in our walks but has a Bible prototype we find sermons in the trees books in the running brooks and good in everything Always in the evening we have sacred music nothing so inspires and helps one to exaltation of feeling and endeavor as mu sic I thinksaid I one other thing excels it a faithful Christian mother and in response to the look I gave her the little womans face glowed she dose not receive the appreciation she deserves but works right along in spite of that What one woman has done others may do Why may not every mistress of a farm follow this cheery example and from a dreary desolate day to be dreaded convert the Sabbath into a joy There is endless variety and in struction in the twenty question game and that use othhe alphabet gives wonderful familiarity with the men and women of Scripture then who can doubt but that the riddles are
