tonight I know It was forced on me nut He choked nnd then with nn energy that was all tho stronger for being repressed ho said turning full toward tho mill owner Mr Winter will you go with mo and look Christian men and women who will give themselves and a largo part of their menus to cleanse the souls and bodies and houses of this wretched district Wo havo reached a crisis In Milton when Christians must give themselves to humanity Mr Winter I am going to tell Calvary church so next Sunday Mr Winter was silent They had como out of the district and were walking along together toward tbo upper part tonight will not bo any better until many inXny of I the professing Christians In this town nnd In Calvary church aro willing to leave actually to leave their beautiful homes and spend tho money they ho exclaimed the time lias come when our Master demands of us some token of our Ills clpletdilp greater than the giving of u little money or tho giving of n little work nud time to the solution of the great problem of modern society nnd IIr our own city The time has come win we must give ourselves The time has come when we must re nounce If It Is best If Christ asks It the things wo have so long counted dear the money the luxury the houses nnd go down Into the tene ment district to live there nnd work there with tho people I do not wish to be misunderstood here I do not be lieve our modern civilization Is nn nb surdlty I do not believe Christ If he were here today would demand of us foolish things But this I do bellcvo he would require ourselves We must give ourselves In some way that will mean real genuine downright and de cided self sacrifice If Christ were hero ho would soy to some of you as he said to the young man Sell nil you havo and give to the poor and come follow me1 And If you were unwill ing to do It ho would say you could not be Ills disciples Tho test of disciple ship Is the some now as then tho price Is no less on account of the lapse of I 2000 years Eternal life OFREASON The Nineteenth Century Can Boast Numberless Scientific But Few Imaginative Thickers POETRY ON THE DECLINE ray J W Jmrreltjr Sand Care Flat The question presenting itself tu theI literary world at the present is will not the time come when poetry will not bl1 written And indeed the tendency of literature appears to bo in that direction In the early ages of our literature rhyme was written almost to the exclu sion of prose and even until the beginning of the present century poets far exceeded prose writers In both quality and quantity of works At that time very little was known about science and almost no novels were written The only prose writing then in existence were a few essays on miscellaneous subjects and fewer histories In the seventeenth century Shakes peare and Milton were the centralflgurea in English Literature both were writers of verse Lord Bacon wrote some excellent essays which were scarcely noticed People cared nothing for BO deep a thinker as Bacon In the next century we find Pope Gray Goldsmith and Burns dazzling England with their rhymes end Sir Isaac Newton at the same time working in obscurity on knotty questions in Natur al Philosophy What cared the people of England for science It is astonishing how little progress the world had made in the line of science Few discoveries had been made in the preceding two thousand years A little had been done in Physiology and Astronomy but aside from this nothing more was known than had been known to the old Grecian Philosophers But in the latter part of tire eighteenth century a radical change took place In the line of thought The great polit ical upheavals in both the old world and the now caused a revolution in mens minds Thinking men turned their minds to political problems The good rather than tire pleasure of man kind was studied In the bglnnit g of the present cen Ii v when the governments of the world cme in a measure settled come wri i era galu took tin the old theme poetry Hilt the enchantment of the Goddess Imagination was broken and gradually thinking men turned their attention to suhjCtaof more importance to man kind This wave of thought resulted in the great inventions and discoveries that have made the nineteenth century noted for its progress The study of scientific subjectsJ lies caused the reasoning powers of the worlds mind to be developed to the detriment of the imagination This has producedl amakcd change In our litera ture which chins ga Is due chit fly to the fact that the writing of poetry has given way to prose A careful student of titer rtlurti cannot fail to s e this fact Tilt noted writers of the nineteenth century are clllllh writers of prose And the deepest thinkers are men who think on scientific qaestlonr With all our boifctrd lenrnlugaud culture we hnve bad 110 poet in the present century who ban come near the genius ofShakeepeare or Milton True we have had a few poets such as Tennyson and Longfellow who wrote excellent poetry But even the beet works of these contain finer art and lees imagination or what tho old writers called fire than tbe works of the old poets Tnelr writings art mora practi cal more in touch with true everyday happenings of the world And the ben ffit derived from such writing is appar ent Then it is true the present century iras produced no Grays or Goldsmiths neither did the eighteenth produce any Macauleys or Huxleys we have nothing to compare with the Elegy iu a Country Churchyard neither have they anything to compare with The Descent of Man Poetry is evidently on the decline and prose is taking Its place It being more useful to man Poetry is the result of imagination prose the result of deep thought Poetry Is suited to the mlpd of a chivalric funlovinc people prose to the mind of a practical progressive nation This is an age of science an age of progress an age of people who live iiii tho present not in the deeds of ancient heroesSome have affirmed that poetry Is the pro uUon of diseased mind This no doubt ion mistake but K Is an evident fact that some of our greatestt poets and L RISING BREAST childbirth for it robs ordeal of its horror and insures safety to generally live in an imaginary world not in an ordinary one It is a well established fact that the early ages of a language are the most fruitful for tine production of poetry The customs of tbe people are wild and unsettled Daring deeds are doneprompt ed by the passions of a semibarbarous people These things are sung by the poets As a people become more refined and cultured thepowerof writing highly imaginative pottiy is diminished Shakespeare lived Just after the close of the Mediaeval Period in which chiv alry and feudalism had been at their height In thin SRO armed knights per National Magazine THE AIR WE BREATHE An AvcrnKe of Ont Cable root Con iiiicil Kvcry Two Minutes Stan wants but little here below Is an axiom which applies markedly to tire quantity of air which Is necessary to support life It Is estimated that when u man Is at rest he consumes 500 cubic Inches of air every minute an al lowance which at the first glance ap pears large It Is however absurdly small when we consider that at this rate of con Btiuiptlou It would take a man D days nnd OVfe hours to exhaust the air In a small room 10 feet square and 10 ftIt- hllh i Any form of exertion however greatly Increases the consumption of air Thus If we saunter at two miles an hour wo require just twice as much air as whun sitting In our armchair and at tour miles an hour nothing less than 2300 cubic Inches will satisfy us Taking an average consumption throughout life of one cubic foot of air every two minutes we reach some very Interesting conclusions Thus an hours supply of air could bo contained In a trunk G feet long 3 feet wide and 2I feet deep In a tIny wo should exhaust a small roomful 10 feet long 7 feet wide and 10 feet hlglr For a years supply we should require a reservoir or ball 100 feet square and a shade over 20 feet high and tho supply fora long life of SO years would bo contained In a largo ball 1000 feet long COO feet wldo and 42 feet blgb Chicago TimesHerald
