say over seer fail or refuse to work his road the full time or fall or rotune to require each hand to work four full days the super visor olmll report nudi overseer to the county judge to be dealt with in accor dance with section 4310 Kentucky SU tutee It shall be ouo of the duties of the various supervisors to employ the hands belonging to the roads where he is or may bo at work provided however that they are ready to work at the time he needs them are able to do a good days work and are willing to work at such prices aa he may be able to get other hands that are equally as good He 1900 WHEAT Tho average condition of the wheat crop compared with normal on April 1st is 01 which is 11 points above the average for the past four years and one point Uelow the condition on date of last report- In the western section tho condition is 03 in the central it Is 07 and in the southeastern it ia 00 This ia a falling off during the month with the exception of the southeastern section which shows an improvement in condition The crop was subjected to some eovero tects during March by n low tempera lure prevailing during the early portion of tho month and the frequent freezing and thawing later Tho ill effects were mainly shown in late wheat and wheat- on land imperfectly drained Early wheat on well drained soil though the blades wore browned appears to have suffered no permanent injury Apprehension is still felt in some sections of future injury by fly and some reports of recent injury from this insect are re ceived The probability of tho fly working injury at this belongs to God and should be used by the man as God would use it In the mans place I The accumulation of vast sums of money by Individuals or classes of men has always been a bad thing for society A few very rich men and a great number of very poor men are what gave the world the French revolution and tho guillotine There are certain conditions true of society at certain times when It Is the Christian duty of the rich to use every cent they possess to relieve tho need of society Such a condition faces us today I The foolish and unnecessary ex penditures of society on its trivial pleasures audience rose to Its feet nod cheered again and again At time close of the meeting the min ister was surrounded by a crowd of men and an after meeting was held at which steps were taken to forma com mittee composed of prominent church people and labor leaders to work It possible together toward a common endIt was rumored yesterday that sev eral of the leading members of Cal vary church are very much dissatisfied with the way things have been going during these Sunday evening meetings and are likely to withdraw If they continue They say that Mr Strongs utterances are socialistic and tend to Intlamo the minds of the people to acts of violence Since the attack on Mr Winter nearly every mill owner In town goes armed and takes extra precautions Mr Strong was much pleased with tho result of tho Sunday night meetings and said they had done much to bridge the gulf between the church and the people Ho refused to credit the talk about disaffection In Calvary church In another column of this same pa per wcre flve separate accounts of the desperate condition of affairs in tho town Tho midnight hold up attacks were growing in frequency and In boldness Along with all the rest the sickness In the tenement district had assumed the nature of an epidemic of fever clearly caused by the lack of sanitary regulations Imperfect drainage and crowding of families Clearly the condition of matters was growing seriousAt time the ministers of differ ent churches In Milton held a meeting to determine on a course of action that would relieve some of the distress Various plans were submitted Some proposed districting the town to aster taln tho number lit needy families Others proposed a union of benevolent offerings to bo given the poor Anoth er group suggested something else To Philips mind not ono of the plans submitted went to the root of tho matter He was not popular with tho other ministers Most of them thought he was sensational However ho made a plea for his own plan which was radical and as ho believed went to the real heart of tho subject Ho propos ed that every church In town regard less of Its denomination give Itself In Its pastor and members to the practical solution of the social troubles by personal contact with the suffering and sickness In tho dIstrict that the churches all throw open their doors ev ery day In the week weekdays as well as Sundays for the discussion and agi tation of the whole matter ibat the country and tho state bo petitioned to take speedy action toward providing- n sary labor for the unemployed arid that the churches cut down all urn necessary expenses of paid choirs dt away with pew rents urge wealthy members to consecrate their riches to tho solving of the problem and In ev cD war by personal sacrifice and commonunion lettho churches of Mil ton as a unit work and pray and sacri flee to make themselves felt as a real power on tho side of tho people In their present great need It was Christian America but Philips plan was not adopted It was discussed with some warmth but declared to be visionary Impracticable unnecessary not for the church to undertake beyond Its Rise Uou etc Philip was disappointed but ho kept his temper Well brethren he said what can i wo do to help the solution of these questions 7 Is the church of America to have no share in the greatest problem of human life that agitates the world today Is It not true that tho people in this town regard the church as an Insignificant organization unable to help at the very point of human crisis and the preachers as a lot of weak Impractical men with no knowledge of the real state of affairs Are wo not divided over our denominational dif ferences when we ought to bo united In one common work for tho saving of the whole man I do not have any faith In the plan proposed to give our benevolence or to district tho town and visit the poor All those things lire well enough In their place But mat ters arc In such shape hero now and all over the country that we must do something larger than that Wo must do as Christ would do If he were here What would he do Would he glvo anything less than his whole life to it Would bo not give himself The church as an Institution Is facing the greatest opportunity It ever saw If we do not seIze it on the largest possl blo scale wo shall miserably fall of doing our duty- Saturday nIght ho was out callldg a little while but he came home early It was the first Sunday of the month on the morrow and he had not fully prepared his sermon Ho was behind with It As bo came in hIs wife met him with a look of news on her farmers wife begin at the beginning for that was the day of all days to her more Important far than the day ot her birth was the day of her marriage for a loving woman finds heaven or bell the day she is made a brideDo of yon remember her on that day can you recall Jnst how she looked 7 If in the stress of her cares and the pass ing of years she has forgotten her husband has not ah no his right hand may forget its cnnning l ut uever never can he forget his bride He can see her now can you not Simply clad as be fita a country maiden her jjewels but the sparkle in her eyes while for flowers she wears the roses in her cheeks and the lily on her brow more precious to you than mines of gold or fields of dia monde was the dower that she brought the warm true love of her gentle heart All this may have been years ago to some of YOU but do you not sometimes see her even yet though time has silvered oer her locks and stolen the roses from her cheeks and wilted all the whiteness of her lily bloom 1 Do you not still in fancy sometimes hear the music of her voice as she uttered her marriage vows and feel again the sweet tug at your heart strings that thrilled you through and through under the solemn assurance that yon were no longer twain but one that you were man and wife 1 After that day of all comes the home making the nest building and oh how it absorbs the lfarmers busy young wife Unlike her city sister under similar cir cumstances she has no constant stream of guests full of interest and suggestions for the new surroundings her life is necessarily one of much loneliness even her husband being absent from day to dark But she is happy as she works and sings and dreams of success when the home shall be theirs and a snug bank account will make possible the little luxuries over her vanished hopes For the first few years there are gay little visits home and to girlhood friends there are guebla to entertain now and then Sabbaths are always a pleasure they give husband and fears interest In outside things ere lest pleasures are dropped one at a time leelng which the husband becomes more and more ab sorbed in money making until well nigh ah else is forgotten Holiday and least day for tho rest of the world pass unnoticed In the isolation of farm life it is so easy to forget how others live and they slowly drop into a rut of dreary monotony Isnt that true of so many of us have we not lived alone on the farm 10 long us to almost cease caring for thing + beyond it Is it not true that this history of a day on the dark side of farm life tells the whole monoto nous routine of existence At the first gray streak of dawn the wifes pet rooster crows long and loud He dory it on purpose to awaken her from her beauty sleep and is always successful he has obeyed the sum mope S3 often that it has become second nature and before she reallzsa it she Is out of the warm blankets noiselessly trembling into her clothes lest she awake the sleeping baby half clad her cold fingers still fidgeting with her brooch she scampers to the kitchen Once there a nervous fear that breakfast may be late BBZJB her and she rushes about until it is on the table and the family seated when she draws her first long breath while the blessing is being asked The breakfast bolted in hot haste and the men off to work she re sumes her hurry ekurries through the dish washing and kitchen work hastens through bed making and house cleaning skims over milk vessels refrigerators and churning hurries to the garden for vegetables rushes through dinner makes her fingers fly on the afternoon sewing and scouring so she may worry through supper at the proper hour to sink exhausted Into a chair at bed time too weary to speak or think She has not only done the thousand and one duties that fell to her lot that day but she has done them well has lighted nothing and before falling sleep has thought in utter weariness Oh if tomorrow might never come But it does come and it always just the
