1900 WHEAT Tho average condition of the wheat crop compared with normal on April 1st is 01 which is 11 points above the average for the past four years and one point Uelow the condition on date of last report- In the western section tho condition is 03 in the central it Is 07 and in the southeastern it ia 00 This ia a falling off during the month with the exception of the southeastern section which shows an improvement in condition The crop was subjected to some eovero tects during March by n low tempera lure prevailing during the early portion of tho month and the frequent freezing and thawing later Tho ill effects were mainly shown in late wheat and wheat- on land imperfectly drained Early wheat on well drained soil though the blades wore browned appears to have suffered no permanent injury Apprehension is still felt in some sections of future injury by fly and some reports of recent injury from this insect are re ceived The probability of tho fly working injury at this reason is GO remote we are inclined to tho opinion that the injury mentioned is traceable to some other cause OATS Little progress has been made fn oat seeding to April let The acreage is esti mated with mo for awhile It was all said so calmly so lovingly BO honestly that the man softened un der It A tear tolled over his cheek Ho brushed his hand over lily egos It had hen a long time since nnyolio had called him brother Comer Ihiliji reached out his hand and helped him to rise Jlho plan stag gored null might have fallen If Philip had not supported him I am faint and dizzy ho said Courage man MyI home Is not far off Uo shall soon bo there Ills companion was silent As they carne up to the door Philip sold I havent asked your name but It might save a little awkwardness I know It William Philip did not hear the last name It was spoken In such a low voice Mrs Strong nt once set food upon the table and then she and Philip with true delicacy busied themselves In an other room so as not to watch the hungry man while ho ate When he had satisfied his hunger Fhlllp showed j him the little room where thoII Brother Man had staid ono night I You may make It your own as long us you will Philip said You may look upon It ns simply a part of what has been given us to be used for the Fathers children The man seemed dazed by tho re sult of his encounter with the preacher He murmured something about thanks lIe was evidently very much I worn and the excitement of the even ing had given place to an appearance of dejection that alarmed Philip After a few words ho went out and left the man who said that he felt very drow rsy I believe ho Is going to have a tee rer or something Mr Strong said to his the other wifeIIo relatedrung with the man making very light of the attack and indeed excusing It on the ground of his desperate condition Ills fear was realizedI The next morning he found his lodger In the clutch of fever Before night he was delirious The doctor came and pronounced him dangerously 111 And Philip with the burden of Us work weighing heavier on him every moment took up this additional load and prayed hIs Lord to give him strength to carry It and save another soul It was at the time of this event In Mr Strongs life that another occur red which had Its special bearing upon the crisis of all his life The church was dear to his thought loved by him with a love that only very few of the members understood In spIte of his apparent failure to rouse them to a conception of their duty as he saw It he was confident that the spirit of God would accomplish the miracle which ho could not do Then there were those In Calvary church who sympathized heartily with him and were ready to follow his leadership So he began to plan for a series of Sunday night services different from anything Milton had ever known Ills life In the tenement district and his growing knowledge cf the labor world had convinced him of the fact that the church was missing Its opportuni ty In not grappling with the problem as It existed In Milton It seemed to him that tho first step to a successful solution of that problem was for the church and the workIngman to get together upon some common platform for a better understanding lIe accordingly planned for a series of Sun day night services In which his one great purpose was to unite the church and the labor unions In a scheme of mutual helpfulness Ills plan was very simple Ho Invited Into tho meet- Ing one or two thoughtful leaders of tho mill men and asked them to state In the plainest terms the exact condl lion of affairs In the labor world from their standpoint Then he for the church took up their statements their complaints or the reasons for their differences with capital and answered them from the Christian standpoint what would Christ advise under the circumstances lIe had different sub jects presented on different evenings One night It was reasons why the mill men were not In the church Another night It was till demand of men for better houses and how to get them Another night It was the subject of trlkes and the attitude of Christ on wages and the relative value of the wage earners product and the capl talists Intelligence At each meeting he allowed one or two of the Invited leaders to take the platform and say Very plainly what to his mind was the cause and what the remedy for the poverty and crime and suffering of the world Then ho closed the even ings discussion by a calm clear state meat of what was to him the direct application of Jesus teaching to the point at issue OHAPTER XX We cannot do better than give the Evening pacer account of the last sent ice In the series With one or two slight exaggerations the account was a faithful picture of one of the most re markable meetings ever held In Milton Last night It will be safe to say those who were fortunate enough to secure standing room In Ilcv Philip Strongs church heard and saw things that no other church In this town ever i witnessedIn first place It was a most astonishing crowd of people Several ofII 0 butItlie3i t Iossesslonithey founded on the easy cushioned pews of the Calvary church for there was not room enough to lounge but i they filled up the sanctuary and seemed to enjoy the comfortable luxury of It i The subject of the evening was i Wealth anti the president of the trades assembly of Milton made a statement of the view which working men In general have of wealth as re mated to labor of hand or brain Ho stated what to his mind was the rea son for the discontent of so many at the sight of great numbers of rich men In tines of suffering or sickness or lack of work Why Just look at tho everylargeMen are suffering from tile lack of common necessaries while men of means with money In the bank con tinue to live just as luxuriously and spend just ns much as they ever did for things not needful for happiness It has been In the power of men of wealth In Milton to prevent almost If not all of the suffering here last win ter and spring It has been In their power to see that the tenements were better built and arranged for health and decency It has been In their power to do a thousand things that money and money alone can do and I believe they will bo held to account for not doing some of those thingsI At this point some one In the gallery shouted out Hang the aristo crats Instantly Itcv Mr Strong and steppedi to tho front of the plat form Raising his long sinewy arm and stretching out his open hand In ap peal he said while the great audience was perfectly quiet I will not allow any such disturbance at this meeting We are here not to denounce people but to find tho truth Let every fair minded man bear that In mind The preacher sat down and the au dience cheered The president of the trades assembly resumed the discussion closing wjth the statement that neVer In the history of the country had there been so much money In the banks and so little of It In the pockets of the people and when that was a fact something was wrong and It was for the men who owned the money to right that wrong for It lay In their power not with the poor man He was followed by a very clear and Intensely Interesting talk by Rev Mr Strong on the Christian teaching concerning tho wealth of the world Several times he was Interrupted by applause once with hisses several times with questions lIe was hissed when he spoke of the great selfishness of labor unions and trades organiza tions In their attempts to dictate to other men In the matter of work With this one exception In which the reverend gentleman spoke with his usual frankness the audience cheered his presentation of the subject and was evidently In perfect sympathy with hIs views Short extracts from his talk will show the drift of his en tire belief on this subject Every dollar that a man has should be spent to the glory of God The Uachlng of Christianity about wealth Is the same as about anything else It all belongs to God and should be used by the man as God would use it In the mans place I The accumulation of vast sums of money by Individuals or classes of men has always been a bad thing for society A few very rich men and a great number of very poor men are what gave the world the French revolution and tho guillotine There are certain conditions true of society at certain times when It Is the Christian duty of the rich to use every cent they possess to relieve tho need of society Such a condition faces us today I The foolish and unnecessary ex penditures of society on its trivial pleasures nt a time when men and women are out of work and children are crying fur food Is a cruel and un Christine waste of opportunity If Christ were hero today I be hove be would tell the rich men of Mil ton that every cent they have belongs to Almighty God and they are only trustees of his property The church that thinks more of flue architecture and paid choirs than of opening Its doors to tho people that they may hear tho gospel Is a church that is mortgaged for all it is worth to the devil who will foreclose at the firstopportunityThe of every man who has money I lrto ask himself What would Christ have me do with IU The second duty is to go and do it after hearing the anawer MlJf the money owned by church members were all spent to the glory of God there would bo fewer hun dred thousand dollar churches built and more model tenements If Christ had been a millionaire ho would have used his money to build up character In other people rather than build a magnificent brownstono palace for himself But we cannot Imagine Christ as a millionaire It Is as true now as when Paul said It nearly 20 centuries ago Tho love of money is a root of nil kinds of evil It Is the curse of our civilization the greatest god of tho human race today Our civilization Is only partly Christian for Christian civilization means more comforts ours means more wants If a mans pocketbook Is not con verted with his soul the man will not get Into heaven with it There are certain things that money alone can secure but among those things It cannot buy Is character All wealth from tho Christian standpoint Is In the nature of trust funds to be so used as the adminis trator God shall direct No man owns the money for himself The gold la Gods the silver Is Gods That Is the plait and repeated teaching of tho Bi ble It la not wrong for a man to make money It Is wrong for him to use It selfishly or foolishly Time consecrated wealth of time men of Milton could provide work for every Idle man In town Tho Christian use of the wealth of the world would stake Impossible tho cry for bread Most of the evils of our present condition How out of tho love of mon ey Tho almighty dollar Is the god of Protestant America If men loved men as eagerly as they love money the millennium would be just around the corner Wealth Is a curse unless the owner of It blesses the world with It If any man hath the worlds goods and sccth his brother have need and shiittcth up his compassion from him how dwelleth the love of God In him Christian socialism teaches a mann to bear other peoples burdens The very first principle of Christian social ism Is unselfishness We shall never see a better condi tion of affairs In this country until tho men of wealth realize their responsibility and privilege Christ never said anything against the poor Ho did speak some tremen dous warnings In the taco of the selfish rich The only safe thing for a man of wealth to do Is to ask himself What would Christ do with my money If be hadItItwould be Impossible to describe the effect of the Rev Mr Strongs talk upon the audience Once the applause was so long continued that It was a 1Chennhe llnallyftremen dous appeal to tho wealth of Milton to use Its power for the good otthe place for the tearing down and remodeling of the tenements for tho solution of the problem of no work for thousands of desperate men time audience rose to Its feet nod cheered again and again At time close of the meeting the min ister was surrounded by a crowd of men and an after meeting was held at which steps were taken to forma com mittee composed of prominent church people and labor leaders to work It possible together toward a common endIt was rumored yesterday that sev eral of the leading members of Cal vary church are very much dissatisfied with the way things have been going during these Sunday evening meetings and are likely to withdraw If they continue They say that Mr Strongs utterances are socialistic and tend to Intlamo the minds of the people to acts of violence Since the attack on Mr Winter nearly every mill owner In town goes armed and takes extra precautions Mr Strong was much pleased with tho result of tho Sunday night meetings and said they had done much to bridge the gulf between the church and the people Ho refused to credit the talk about disaffection In Calvary church In another column of this same pa per wcre flve separate accounts of the desperate condition of affairs in tho town Tho midnight hold up attacks were growing in frequency and In boldness Along with all the rest the sickness In the tenement district had assumed the nature of an epidemic of fever clearly caused by the lack of sanitary regulations Imperfect drainage and crowding of families Clearly the condition of matters was growing seriousAt time the ministers of differ ent churches In Milton held a meeting to determine on a course of action that would relieve some of the distress Various plans were submitted Some proposed districting the town to aster taln tho number lit needy families Others proposed a union of benevolent offerings to bo given the poor Anoth er group suggested something else To Philips mind not ono of the plans submitted went to the root of tho matter He was not popular with tho other ministers Most of them thought he was sensational However ho made a plea for his own plan which was radical and as ho believed went to the real heart of tho subject Ho propos ed that every church In town regard less of Its denomination give Itself In Its pastor and members to the practical solution of the social troubles by personal contact with the suffering and sickness In tho dIstrict that the churches all throw open their doors ev ery day In the week weekdays as well as Sundays for the discussion and agi tation of the whole matter ibat the country and tho state bo petitioned to take speedy action toward providing- n sary labor for the unemployed arid that the churches cut down all urn necessary expenses of paid choirs dt away with pew rents urge wealthy members to consecrate their riches to tho solving of the problem and In ev cD war by personal sacrifice and commonunion lettho churches of Mil ton as a unit work and pray and sacri flee to make themselves felt as a real power on tho side of tho people In their present great need It was Christian America but Philips plan was not adopted It was discussed with some warmth but declared to be visionary Impracticable unnecessary not for the church to undertake beyond Its Rise Uou etc Philip was disappointed but ho kept his temper Well brethren he said what can i wo do to help the solution of these questions 7 Is the church of America to have no share in the greatest problem of human life that agitates the world today Is It not true that tho people in this town regard the church as an Insignificant organization unable to help at the very point of human crisis and the preachers as a lot of weak Impractical men with no knowledge of the real state of affairs Are wo not divided over our denominational dif ferences when we ought to bo united In one common work for tho saving of the whole man I do not have any faith In the plan proposed to give our benevolence or to district tho town and visit the poor All those things lire well enough In their place But mat ters arc In such shape hero now and all over the country that we must do something larger than that Wo must do as Christ would do If he were here What would he do Would he glvo anything less than his whole life to it Would bo not give himself The church as an Institution Is facing the greatest opportunity It ever saw If we do not seIze it on the largest possl blo scale wo shall miserably fall of doing our duty- Saturday nIght ho was out callldg a little while but he came home early It was the first Sunday of the month on the morrow and he had not fully prepared his sermon Ho was behind with It As bo came in hIs wife met him with a look of news on her face Guess who Is hero she said In a whisperTho Brother Man replied Philip quicklyYes I but you never can guess what has happened Ho Is In there with William And the Brother ManPhil Ip It seems like a chapter out of a- noeltho Brother Man has discovered that William Is his only son who cursed his father and deserted hIm when he gavo away his property They are In there together I could not keep the Brother Man out Philip and Sarah stepped to the door of the little room which was open and looked In Tho Brother Man was kneeling at tho side of the bed praying and his son was listening with one hand tight clasped In his fathers and the tears rolling over his palo face- CHAPTER XXI When the Brother Man had finished his prayer ho rose and stooping his son be kissed him Then ho ed about and faced Philip and Sarah who almost felt guilty of Intrusion In t Vlng at such a scene But the Broth i Ian wore a radiant look To Phil IllS surprise ho was not excited The same Ineffable peace breathed from his entire person To that peace was now added a fathomless joy Yes he said very simply I havo found my son which was lost God Is good to me Ho Is good to all his children Ho is the All Father Ho is LoveDid you know your son was heror Philip asked No I found him here Yon have saved his life That was doing as He wouldIt very little wo could do saW Philip with a sigh Ho had seen so much trouble and suffering that day that his soul was sick within him Yet ho welcomed this event in his home It seemed like a little brightness of heaven on earth I havo not seen him for years He was my youngest son Wo quarreled All that is past He did not know that to give up all that ono has was tho will of God Now bo knows When ho is well wo will go away together yes together Ho spread out his palms in his favorite gesture with plentiful content in hIs taco and voice As spring had blossomed into sum mer and summer ripened into autumn every ono had predicted better times But tho predictions did not bring them The suffering and sickness and helplessness of tho tenement district grew every day more desperate To Philip It seemed like tho ulcer of Milton All tho surface remedies proposed and adopted by the city council and tho churches and tho benevolent societies had not touched tho problem Tho mills were going on part time Thousands of men yet lingered In tho place hoping to get work Even if the mills had been running as usual that would not have diminished one particle of the sin and vice and drunkenness that saturated the place And as Philip studied tho matter with brain and soul bo came to a conclusion regarding the duty of the church Ho did not pretend to go beyond that but as the weeks went by and fall camo on and another winter stared the people cold ly In the face he knew that he must speak out what burned In him Ho had been a year in Milton Every month of that year had impressed him with tho deep and apparently hopeless chasm that yawned between the work Ing world and the church There was no point of contact One was suspI- cIous tho other was indifferent Some thing was radically wrong and some thing radically positive and Christian must be done to right tho condition that faced tho churches of Milton That was in his soul as be went his way like one of tho old prophets Im bued with the love of God aa he saw it In the heart of Christ With infinite longing he yearned to bring the church to a sense of her great power pad op portunity So matters bad flimsily drawn to a point In the month of No vember The Brother Man bad come ioI October The sick man recovered slowly Philip and his wife found roomJtor the father slid ton and shared with them what comforts they had It should bo said that after moving out of tho parsonage Into his house In tho tenement district Philip had more than given the extra thousand dollars the church Insisted on paying him The CONTINUED A MESSAGE TO KRUQER James F SmIth is 10 year old boy of Brooklyn who has been two years iu the Must Be Brave Cheerful and Happy Hurry and Worry The Bugbears of Farm Life Extracts from a Lecture delivered at the Farmers Institute By Mrs Lucy Cleaver McElroy Lebanon Ky Let us in considering the farmers wife begin at the beginning for that was the day of all days to her more Important far than the day ot her birth was the day of her marriage for a loving woman finds heaven or bell the day she is made a brideDo of yon remember her on that day can you recall Jnst how she looked 7 If in the stress of her cares and the pass ing of years she has forgotten her husband has not ah no his right hand may forget its cnnning l ut uever never can he forget his bride He can see her now can you not Simply clad as be fita a country maiden her jjewels but the sparkle in her eyes while for flowers she wears the roses in her cheeks and the lily on her brow more precious to you than mines of gold or fields of dia monde was the dower that she brought the warm true love of her gentle heart All this may have been years ago to some of YOU but do you not sometimes see her even yet though time has silvered oer her locks and stolen the roses from her cheeks and wilted all the whiteness of her lily bloom 1 Do you not still in fancy sometimes hear the music of her voice as she uttered her marriage vows and feel again the sweet tug at your heart strings that thrilled you through and through under the solemn assurance that yon were no longer twain but one that you were man and wife 1 After that day of all comes the home making the nest building and oh how it absorbs the lfarmers busy young wife Unlike her city sister under similar cir cumstances she has no constant stream of guests full of interest and suggestions for the new surroundings her life is necessarily one of much loneliness even her husband being absent from day to dark But she is happy as she works and sings and dreams of success when the home shall be theirs and a snug bank account will make possible the little luxuries both desire So she builds her castles in the air God help her if as they so often do the airy fairy build- Ings crumblo to dust before her very eyes and Borrow comes to sit amid their ruins anti croon over her vanished hopes For the first few years there are gay little visits home and to girlhood friends there are guebla to entertain now and then Sabbaths are always a pleasure they give husband and wife so much ol each others society and church going seems quite a eoclal dissipation Thus time rolls on till the children came and as mothers cares increase the hopisfor tie future are mingled with fears interest In outside things ere lest pleasures are dropped one at a time leelng which the husband becomes more and more ab sorbed in money making until well nigh ah else is forgotten Holiday and least day for tho rest of the world pass unnoticed In the isolation of farm life it is so easy to forget how others live and they slowly drop into a rut of dreary monotony Isnt that true of so many of us have we not lived alone on the farm 10 long us to almost cease caring for thing + beyond it Is it not true that this history of a day on the dark side of farm life tells the whole monoto nous routine of existence At the first gray streak of dawn the wifes pet rooster crows long and loud He dory it on purpose to awaken her from her beauty sleep and is always successful he has obeyed the sum mope S3 often that it has become second nature and before she reallzsa it she Is out of the warm blankets noiselessly trembling into her clothes lest she awake the sleeping baby half clad her cold fingers still fidgeting with her brooch she scampers to the kitchen Once there a nervous fear that breakfast may be late BBZJB her and she rushes about until it is on the table and the family seated when she draws her first long breath while the blessing is being asked The breakfast bolted in hot haste and the men off to work she re sumes her hurry ekurries through the dish washing and kitchen work hastens through bed making and house cleaning skims over milk vessels refrigerators and churning hurries to the garden for vegetables rushes through dinner makes her fingers fly on the afternoon sewing and scouring so she may worry through supper at the proper hour to sink exhausted Into a chair at bed time too weary to speak or think She has not only done the thousand and one duties that fell to her lot that day but she has done them well has lighted nothing and before falling sleep has thought in utter weariness Oh if tomorrow might never come But it does come and it always just the fi ti ul stave tomorrow the same HBceuta nmtiBe of labor and rah par after day year after year nothing but toll toll hurry worry rush that Is the strange thing about it the enterrtal rush Mid the peace and quiet of the country why not go on peacefully and quietly doing ones duty M it cornea There is but one solution to the problem and that is her work exceeds her time and she is constantly trying to establish some sort of equilibrium What does the hard barren existence yield in reo turn for all her efforts Not happiness one look in the face of the farm woman of the dark side tells no Not money certainly not though she Is the hardest worker on the place this farmers wire has no bank account of her own I will tell you what she gets liar vlttles and clothes that is all though in nearly every case her hiubaud Is well able to grant her reasonable wishes and the poor creature never has unreasonable oneeOne of the saddest slghta I ever saw was the death bed of a farm woman who had made herself a slave like that She had married young and hers was a love match for both were poor but they were ambitious proud and strong and such can accomplish a treat deal Soon the farm which they rented to begin on was theirs without a dollars indebted ness then more land was added till a thousand acres were held as tho chil dren grew up a large handsome house was built music education books all were given the young folks Tbe farmer became one of the richest most influen tial men in his county and the two grew old together honored and respected When I first knew them she was gray witheredand worn while his long beard was livery as the snow in toll and accumulation of this worlds goods he had forgotten his youth and hers She was simply a machine like thing to him working saving accumulating grind grind grind But death bad not for gotten kind generous death coming in mercy so often to smooth the rugged ways and straighten out the crooked things when all other hands have failed No he had not forgotten he never does and he came at last for the poor tired stave of the household and at touchof his fingers she lay prostrate Then when it was too late the scales fell from her husbands eyes and he saw at last all she had accomplished and en dured saw all she had been to him and his saw his selfish neglect and ingrati tude and like a wave from Eternitys sea remorse swept over him and all his forgotten love and tenderness surged back in his heart Bending over he called with the old time gentleness in his voice MarthylMarthylI But death had dulled her hearing he must speak again and louder He did smoothing with rough fingers the fur rowed brow even then wet with the dews of death MarthylI She lifted her eyes and we wondered what message he bad for those dying ears twas thisuttered with the great sob of a mans misery Marthy I love you I love you I She smiled and the fast glazing eyes took on a look of glad surprise as she lifted with great effort her numb arms to lay them around his neck and mur mur with the pleased wonder of a little child Do you Henry really I didnt al ways know Then with a smile of sweet content for the new discovery she fell asleep forever Oh my friend do not wait till death claims your wife to tell her that sweet story again let her always know you love her Do not allow her to work her self to death because it helps you finan cially feeling as the man who excused himself for a rather hasty second mar riage by saying You see things was goin ter rack and ruin at my place and a fellera wife will do so much more than a hired woman Besides yer Bee he added with a knowing twinkle in his eye elide er darn sight cheaper PI Cheaper I Yes she is cheaper Few hired women work simply for shelter food and clothing But thank Heaven all farmers wives do not live like this there is a bright side to this as to all pictures Life on a farm ought to be to a woman the happiest most care free of existences What with poultry and bees with flowers and vege tables she gets out door exercise suffi cient to keep her young a long time and her labors are all health giving and pleasant Labor is a necessity and a part of every useful happy life woman should share mens toil and hardships in the same proportion in which she shares his joy and ease and she usually does it cheerfully On a farm it has been a womans share of the duties to do the housework and rear tbe children ever since Eve gathered fig leaves for clothes and raised Oaln in the garden of Eden Certainly work must be don but let it be done cheerily and bravely do not make life a drudgery- In contrast to the farm slave as we have Just seen her let us have the farm mistress the Queen of the beautiful realm called home one whom the Mak er God may look upon as he did at the first and say It is very good Let us learn to have our farm houses homes where comfort and good cheer abound where labor Iis evenly distributed to all and made a burden to none where there are books and magazines where time la had for reading music prayer and all proper effort for higher better things qf i d x life ao thai we may prow morally lnd intellectually M well M physically Theee things attained and the much vexed question of how to keep the boys on the farm will be answered once for all Bat how you say Let ua all pull together now and tee If the Department For Farm Women in the Ladies home Journal for 1000 will not solve the problem for the great majority I Pains In the Back I A B Farrington Constanta N Y IIYShI was troubled several yeaie with kidney disease and suffered
