kIn His Steps What Would Jesus Do Mnlcom Kirk Robert IInrdys Seven Days FtcIIr ICoPrlgbtc t 1800 by Tho Advocate y raIlEmWI 1hmmmum muna I era glad you puflt tint way ex claimed Philip eagerly turning to speaker That is Just It Will theII proposed move result In bringing church and the minister Into closer and more vital relations with the people most In need of spiritual and physlcnlI uplifting Out of the depths my nature I believe It will Tho chasm I between the church and tho people In IPIr1ItIn vain for us to preach spiritual IsII unless we live physical truths What the world Is looking for today are object lessons In self denial on the part of Christian people For a moment no ono spoke Then Mr Winter said About your proposal that this house be turned Into a refuge or homo for homeless children Mr Strong do you I consider that Idea practicable Is business Is It possible- I ItII believe It Is very decidedly The number of homeless and vagrant chil dren nt present In Milton would aston ish you This house could be put Into t beautiful shape as a detention house until homes could be found for the children In Christian families It would take a great deal of money to manage It Yes replied Philip with n sadness which had Its cause deep within him It would cost something But can the world Jw saved cheaply Does not every soul saved cost au immense sum If not of money at least of au equiva lent Is It possible for us to get at the heart of the great social problem without fooling the need of using all our powers to solve It rightly Mr Winter shook his head lIe did not understand the minister Ills ac tion and his words were both foreign to tho mill owners regular business habits of thought and performance What will you do Mr Strong If the church refuses to listen to this proposed plan of yours- I suppose answered Philip after a little pause the church will not object to my living In another houso at my own charges They have no right to compel you to live here Mr Winter turned to tho other members of tho committee I said so at our previous meeting Gentlemen am I not right In thntf It Is not a question of our com pelling Mr Strong to live here saId one of the others It Is a question of tho churchs expecting him to do so It Is the parsonage and the church home for the minister In my opinion It will cause trouble If Mr Strong moves out People will not understand It That Is my belief too Mr Strong said Mr Winter It would be better for you to modify or change or better still to abandon this plan It will not bo understood and will cause trouble Suppose tho church should rent tho parsonage then suggested Philip It would then be getting a revenue from the property That with tho thousand dollars on my salary could be wisely and generously used to relieve much suffering In Milton this winter Tho church could easily rent tho house That was true as the parsonage stood on ono of thu most dcslrabto parts of n street and would command good rental Then you persist In this plan of yours do you Mr Strong asked tho third member of the committee who had for the most part been silent Yes 1 consider that under tho cir cumstances local and universal it Is my duty Where I propose to go Is a houso which I can get for 8 a month It Is near the tenement district and not so far from the church and this neigh borhood that I need bo Isolated too much from my church family Mr Winter looked serious and per plexed Tho other trustees looked dis satisfied It was evident they regarded tho whole thing with disfavor Mr Winter roso abruptly lIe could not avoid a feeling of anger In splto of his obligation to tho minister lie also had n vivid recollection of his former Interview with the pastor In that study And yet ho struggled wjth tho vague resistance against the feeling that Philip was proposing to do a Wing that could result In only ono way of suffering for himself With nil tho rest went a suppressed but conscious emo tion of wonder that a man would of his own free will give up a luxurious home for tho sake of any one Tho matter of reduction of salary Mr Strong will havo to como beforo the church The trustees cannot vote to accept your proposal I am very much mistaken it tho members of Cal vary church will not oppose the reduc- tIon You can see how It would place us in an unfavorable light Not necessarily Mr Winter sold Philip eagerly If the church will simply regard It as my own great do sire and as ono of the ways by which wo may help forward onr work In Mil ton I am sure we need have no fear of being put In a false light Tho church docs not propose this reduc- tIon It comes from me and In a tlmo of peculiar emergency both financial and social It Is a thing which has been dono several times by other min- Isters That may be Still I am positive Calvary church will regard It as un necossarr md will nrvwo u a win not make any difference practically replied Philip with a smile I can easily dispose of a thou sand dollars where It Is needed by oth ere moro than by me But I would prefer that tho church would actually pay out the money to them rather than myselfMr Winter and the other trustees looked at Philip In wonder and with a few words of farewell they left the parsonage CHAPTER XIV The following week Calvary churchI held a meeting It was one theI stormiest meetings ever held by the members In that meeting Mr Win ter again to tho surprise of nearly nil advised caution and defended the ministers action up to a certain point The result was a condition of waiting and expectancy rather than downright condemnation of the proposed action on Philips part It would be presenting the church In a falso light to picture It as entirely opposed up to this dato to Philips preaching and Ideas of Christian living He had built up a strong buttress of admiring and be- lievIng members In the church This stood with Mr Winters Influence as a breakwater against the tidal wave of opposition now beginning to pour In upon him There was an clement In Calvary church conservative to a de gree and yet strong In Its growing belief that Christian action and church work In the world had reached a cer tain crisis which would result eIther In the death or llfo of the church In America Philips preaching had strengthened this feeling Ills last move bad startled this clement and It wished to wait for developments The proposal of some that tbo minis ter bo requested to resign was finally overruled and It was decided not to oppose his desertion of the parsonage while tho matter of reduction of sal ary was voted upon In tho negative But feeling was roused to a high pitch Many of tho members declared their Intention of refusing to attend services Some said they would not pay their pledges any longer A pro vailing minority however ruled la fa vor of Philip and the action of tho meeting was formally sent him by the clerkMeanwhile Philip moved out of tho parsonage Into his new quarters Tho dally paper which had given a sensational account of his sermon laying most stress upon his voluntary proposl tion referring to his salary now came out with a column and a half devoted to his carrying out of his determination to abandon the parsonage and get near er tho people In the tenements Tho article was widely copied and various ly commented upon In Milton his ac Lion was condemned by many defend ed by some Very few seemed to un derstand his exact motive Tho ma jority took It as an eccentric movo and expressed regret In ono form and an other that a man of such marked in tellectual power as Mr Strong seem ed to possess lacked balance and good judgment Some called him a crank Tho people In the tenement district were too much absorbed In their suf ferings and selfishness to show any demonstration It remained to be seen whether they would be any better touched by him In his new homo So matters stood when the first Sun day of a new month came and Mr Strong again stood before his church with his Christ message It had been a wearing month to him Gradually there had been growing upon him a sense of almost Isolation In his pulpit work lie wondered If ho had Inter preted Christ aright IIo probed deeper and deeper Into the springs of action that moved the historical Jesus and again and again put that resplendently calm majestic Differing personality Into his own pulpit In Milton and then stood oft as It were to watch what ho would In all human probability say do reviewed all his own sayings on those first Sundays and tried to tax hImself with utmost severity for any denial of his Master or any false presentation of his spirit and as ho went over tho ground ho was almost overwhelmed to think how little had been really accomplished This tlmo jo camo beforo the church with tho experience of nearly three weeks hand to hand work among tho people for whoso sake ho hind moved out of tho parsonage As usual an Immense con gregation thronged the church Tho question has como to mo lately In different forms began Philip as to what Is church work I am awaro that my attitude on tho question Is not shared by many of tho members of thIs church and other churches Nov ertheless I stand hero today as I havo stood on these Sundays to declare to you what In deepest humility would seem to mo to bo the attltudo of Christ In tho matter before us What Is a church It Is a body of dIscIples professing to acknowledgo Christ as Master What docs ho want such a body to do Whatever will most effectively make Gods kingdom como on earth and hIs will be dono as In heaven What Is the moat necessary work of this church In Milton It is to go out and seek and save tho OBt It U to tako up its cross and fellow tho Master And as I see him ta- M ha beckons this church to follow him Into the tenements and slums or this town and bo jurists to those who dQ not know him As I sco him ho stands beckoning with pierced palms In the direction of suffering and dIs- ease and Ignorance and vice and pa ganism saying nero Is whore the work of Calvary church lies I do not believe the work of this church con- sIsts In having so many meetings and socIals and pleasant gatherings and do Hghtful occasions among Its own mew bers but the real work of this church consists In getting out of Its own lit tie circle In which It has been so many yean moving and going In any way most effective to tho worlds wounded to bind up the hurt and bo n savior to the lost If wo do not un derrtand this to bo tho truo meaning of church work then I believe wo miss Its whole meaning Church work In Milton today docs not consist In doing simply what your fathers did before you It means helping to mako a clean er town the purification of our munici pal life the actual planning and ac complishment of means to rellovo physical distress a thorough under standing of tho problem of labor and capital In brief church work today In this town Is whatever Is most need ed to be done to provo to this town that we are what wo profess our selves to be disciples of Jesus Christ That Is the reason I glvo moro tlmo to the tenement district problem than to calling on families that are well and In possession of great comforts and privileges That is tho reason I call on this church to do Christs work In his name and glvo Itself to save that part of our town This is but tho briefest of tho sketches of Phlllps sermon It was a part of himself his experience his heart belief no poured It out on tho vast audience with little saving of hIs vitality And that Sunday ho went homo at night exhausted with a feel ing of weariness partly duo to his work during the week among tho people The rails upon his tlmo and strength had boon Incessant and ho did not know where or when to stop It was three weeks after this sor mon on church work that Philip was again surprised by his strango visitor of a month before IIo had been out making some visits In company with his wife When they came back to tho house there sat tho Brother Man on tho doorstep At sight of him Philip felt that sauna thrill of expectancy which had passed over him at his former appearance The old mnn stood up and took oft hIs hat He looked very tired and sor rowtul But thcro breathed from his entire bearing the element of a perfect peaceBrother Man said Philip cheerily come In and rest yourself Can you keep mo overnight Tho question was put wistfully Philip was struck by tho difference between this almost shrinking request and tho self Invitation of a month be foreYes Indeed Wo have ono spare room for you You are welcome Como InSo they went In and after tea tho two sat down together whllo ors Strong was busy in tho kitchen A part of this conversation was after ward related by tho minister to his wife A part of It ho afterward said was unrcportablo tbo manner of tone the Inflection the gesture of his remarkable guest no man could repro duceYou havo moved since I saw you 8t said tho visitor Yes replied Philip You did not expect mo to act on your advice so soonMy advice Tho question camo In a hesitating tone Did I advlso you to move All yes I remember I A- lightl llkosuprcmcst reason flashed over There Bat the Brother Man on the step tho mans fact and then died out Yes yes you aro beginning to llvo on your simpler basis You aro doing as you preach That must feel good Yes replied Philip Iit does feel good Do you an endeavor will be made to have them pass street intersections on schedule time so that messengers from business houses may be sure of depositing mall In them without loss of time These collections
