his death which y occurredat his bome in Hardinaburp morning at 8 oclock Mr J WILLs illness i dates back more than a year agohlln his general tmeetlwhen gan to decline There were + he rallied and seemed to improved but relief was not permanent t He had been confined to his ben about 1 cameatI tU4Sondsy morning Mr Witt was a native of Virginia but 1came with his parents to Kentucky ii a child His ancestors were of rwhenft r stock mid were a family of some distinction ills father resided in Hancock county some years where he i died Subsequently his mother married AJoseph McPherson of this city She re Vsidedhere for some years and died at rw ar advanced age it Mr Witt received his early education In the schools of Olovrpnrt At the age of fourteen he started out In life for himself He flat learned the tailors i ltrade Back in the forties this was con p sidered a good business but it did not last long Lattr Mr Witt embarked in the mercantile business at Stnphensport t+r but only remained there a short while l He went to Hardinaburg in 1871 where the Bought tobacco for Ilensley and successful in thisi Beard Being quite rheafterwards began to do business on his own account This was In 1874 and r he continued It quite successfully until his death Some may have had more y capital but no one had more energy and k industry than Mr Witt It was this rrthat kept his business up for twentyfive years He was kind and genial to every body and this won him a host of friends4 first1frmer port who died in 1883 His second Harr i ity His wife and two adopted daugh ters Misses Mlle and Julia survive f him Mr Witt was a brother of Wm Witt of this city and of Richard Witt alar mer at Rosetta The funeral services took place yesterday at the M E church 1 South In Hardiuaburg of which Mr Suppose tho church should rent tho parsonage then suggested Philip It would then be getting a revenue from the property That with tho thousand dollars on my salary could be wisely and generously used Then you persist In this plan of yours do you Mr Strong asked tho third member of the committee who had for the most part been silent Yes 1 consider that under tho cir cumstances local and universal it Is my duty Where I propose to go Is a houso which I can get for 8 a month It Is near the tenement district and not so far from the church and this neigh borhood that I need bo Isolated too much from my church family Mr Winter looked serious and per plexed Tho other trustees looked dis satisfied It was evident they regarded tho whole thing with disfavor Mr Winter roso abruptly lIe could not avoid a feeling of anger In splto of his obligation to tho minister lie also had n vivid recollection of his former Interview with the pastor In that study And yet ho struggled wjth tho vague Philip eagerly If the church will simply regard It as my own great do sire and as ono of the ways by which wo may help forward onr work In Mil ton I am sure we need have no fear of being put In a that meeting Mr Win ter again to tho surprise of nearly nil advised caution and defended the ministers action up to a certain point The result was a condition of waiting and expectancy rather than downright condemnation of the proposed action on Philips part It would be presenting the church In a falso light to picture It as entirely opposed up to this dato to Philips preaching and Ideas of Christian living He had built up a strong buttress of admiring and be- lievIng members In the church This stood with Mr Winters Influence as a breakwater against the tidal wave of opposition now beginning to pour In upon him There was an clement In Calvary church conservative to a de gree and yet strong In Its growing belief that Christian action and church work In the world had reached a cer tain crisis which would result eIther In the death or llfo of the church In America Philips preaching had strengthened this feeling Ills last move bad startled this clement and It wished to wait for developments The proposal of some that tbo minis ter bo requested to resign was finally overruled and It was decided not to oppose his desertion of the parsonage while tho matter of reduction of sal ary was voted upon In tho negative But feeling was roused to a high pitch Many of tho members declared their Intention of refusing to attend services Some said they would not pay their pledges any longer A pro vailing minority however ruled la fa vor of Philip and the action of tho meeting was formally sent him by the clerkMeanwhile Philip moved out of tho parsonage Into his new quarters Tho
