of Cloverports Advantages and Resources t q AWAKE FROfl THY SLUMBERS i iFrom present indications the city or Oloverport will shortly he visited by parties interested Iin the establishment of manufacturing plant at this place Two inquiries have already been made by outside capital as to the advantages I which we bave to offer and severall ofII our business men have the matter in stand and we lock for some Interesting developments within the next few weeksThe city needs electric lights Any good sized factory would necessarily re quire a largo engine to furnish its own own power and light and with a little larger engine and dynamo it could fur nish electric lights to our citizens at a profit and let the city have a reasonable nurnber of lights gratis in consideration of 1taIranchlse XTWe understand that one of the Inqul rise referred to above la from parties de sirous of establishing a furniture factory and if there is a more desirable location in the Ohio valley than Oloverjtort for such an establishment we do not know where it If Millions of feet of timber have been floated out of Clover Greek in the past and taken to Indiana towns to ti be manufactured into furniture chaps etc and there is no good reason that we t can see why the greater part of the mil t lions of feet yet remaining should not stop here and be used to the advantage of tbe State in which it grew t In this matter we need a long pull a strong pull and a pull all together l and we hope and believe that the gentle men who are now working to advance x the interests of our city by trying to se cure the location of additional industries meet with hearty co operation on 1 1maythe part of all classes of our citizang 71 1890PepsinIjIliGENre1Ihave used Dr Caldwells Syrup Pepsin J with marked which she will easily do If you give her half a show she becomes the best monoy maker there Is on the farm The best butter makers of the north west aro the Danes and the reason of this Is that In no country Is scientific dairying so persistently and thoroughly taught as In Denmark It Is well to remember that calves are seldom sick or ailing when fed warm separator milk right from the cow This Is the testimony of nearly every man who uses a farm separator liens bees and orchards go first rate together The hen will destroy much of tho Injurious Insect life which taunts the orchard while the bees will do a splendid job In tho fertilization of orchard bloom The cost of running a Texas steer on the Texas ranges Is only 100 per year As such steer will put on at least 350 pounds of meat during the year the profits of the beef business In that state are easy to see It may bo cheaper to let the house and barn stand unpainted than to paint them They say It Is but a man who will sock to save a dollar this way do serves to have the ragweeds grow six feet high over hIs grave Feeders through the west are over bidding the Chicago market from 2 to 8 cents a bushel on corn When corn sells at 25 cents the present prices of all meat and dairy products make It worth more to feed than to ship It Is everlastingly to the discredit of the dairy interests of this country that Denmark will buy American corn and oil meal pay freight on It feed It con vert It into butter and outsell our but ter by 3 cents a pound In the English market Wherever water will stand for 24 hours on a tract of land after a heavy rain such land needs draining Dut tow crops will endure being submerged for even that length of time Forty eight hours under water will kill near ly all the cereals outright The great economy of modern Inven tions Is well Illustrated in the case of street car traffic Tho old horse car lines used up 008 per cent of their earnings for operating expenses while the modern electric trolley car lines use but 383 per cent of earnings for operating expenses For a really desirable winter bloom lug house plant we wish to commend the freesias A half dozen of the bulbs planted in a pot in the fall have given us hundreds of beautiful and fragrant blossoms all through January and well Into February were loaded with bloom Try them next winter It seems that when a flock of sheep and Its increase are mortgaged to secure a debt the wool is not included in such mortgage and that the owner of the sheep may sell the wool anti not account therefor to the mortgagee The courts hold that the term Increase ap plies to the animal and not to Its prod ucts When you talk to a beef man about tho oleo fraud on the dairy Interests bo only grins It IH Impossible to get him Interested In the matter even a little bit If ho says anything ho will tell you that the development of the oleo trade has added 5 to the value of every steer which he sells for beet It is thus that self Interest stifles con science Please give Secretary Wilson a long credit mark for refusing point blank to do anything to Interfere In behalf of the two Philadelphia merchants who are In jnll for violating tho dairy laws of that state In selling oleomargarine for butter The secretary says that they should servo out their sentences for the good of humanity and out of respect to old bossy Fifty years ago tho government Is sued Its first agricultural report There was then no agricultural department and the agricultural Interests of the country were consigned to the patent office In the first report published In ISm a gentleman from Iowa contributes an article on tho best breed of oxen to raise for work purposes and that was all Iowa had to say We were In a farming community not long slnco where much corn had been cut up last fall and where the crop was being handled altogether with an old fashioned thrashing ma j chine which shelled the corn and shred + ded tho fodder In very gout shape Tho principal objection to this plan was that tho corn so shelled would not keep when put in any large quantity In a bin Drilled corn will If kept clean yield w about eight bushels moro to the aero i than corn obuitcdau tlin jmcui land In M hills The drilled corn is harder Io keep clean and aa a matter of fact 1 It not properly cultivated whop very small never can bo kept clown The drilled corn grows in better shape for the harvester to out and aside from the Increased yield will furnish cars of a moro uniform size Lands which are located on river bottoms and subject to annual overflow are beat used us blue grass permanent pastures Whllo if broken up a crop may now and then be stolen from them the breaking up engenders such a prodigious growth of weeds that it Is at best a profitless undertaking Such lands mako the very best of pasture lands and are maintained in peren nial fertility by tho overflowing waters The dog whenever he is allowed to revert back to the original typo ale ways assumes a fawn color a wolflsh head and gregarious habit this explained by the fact that most beasts of prey are of a fawn color tho better to enable them to disguise themselves In pursuit of their prey The wolfish head and gregarious habit Indicate that the ancestors of the dog wore closely allied to the wolf If not sprung direct ly from It The eastern dairyman uses a dairy ration which costs him easily 30 per cent moro than such ration docs the western man Then the western man can ship his tub of butter to Boston or New York at a lose rate of freight than the eastern man can his tub from central New York Yet with this serious handicap in dairying the eastern farm er finds that his dairy is about the on ly thing which ho can make really profitable on his farm Ever cheapening freight rates are equalizing land values all over the country The high priced land of tl eastern states is constantly declining in value while tho now lands of tho west are constantly appreciating In value This result while making bad work at the cast Is of corresponding benefit to the west Land values of the future are largely going to be gov erred by the fertility of the land re gardless of location Pigeons are not of any profit as a farm bird but we like to see some of them aroudd They will to some ex tent protect tho poultry on the farm from the attacks of hawks as the hawks which take the chickens will always take tamo pigeons In preference If they can get them It kept they should not bo allowed the range of the barn as they are dirty but should be kept in pigeon houses out side The squabs make a very nice pie and will pay their way so used A lady friend of ours wanted to know why her flowers did not do well last summer when she said that she had put ns much as four inches Iq depth of hen the shapo of the farm Institute which has been a most marked success From somewhat crude beginnings the farm institute has evolved Into one of the most Important and well attended gatherings held by tho people of the several counties of the western states So far as wo know in no other country do the farm ers ever assemble for a two or three days session for the purpose of discussing matters pertaining to their business The field covered by the papers addresses and discussions at these Institutes covers a wide range and touches not only the business side of farm life but Includes tho schools the home the family the social and Intellectual side of life on the farm These meetings also bring out not a little musical and elocutionary ability which would otherwise remain seclud ed in country homes The Interest taken in the meetings increases year by year and the work accomplished so becomes more valuable as It reach es a wider field It is perhaps still too true that the class of farmers who would be most benefited by attending these Institutes fall to attend them but the leaven Is working and they will be on band before long We have saved many doctor bills since we began using Chamberlains Cough Remedy in our home We keep abottle open all the time and whenever any of my family or mvself begin to catch cold we begin to use the Cough Remedy and as a result we never have of beautiful flow ers that every woman who loves them should learn how and If she has any half way white sort of a man for a husband bo will at least help her prepare the ground and keep his hogs and poultry out of the front yard But then there are a wholo lot of men who are not half way white about such things and think that a woman had far better be patching pants or darning socks than fooling Malcom Kirk Robert Hardys Seven Days Etc Copyrighted 1800 by The Advocate Publishing Co i penury ana spirmifu rennement 01 ex prcsslon that Mr and Mrs Strong listened with awed astonichment When he bad uttered the amen Sirs Strong whispered to Ihlllp Surely we cannot shut him out with the storm We will give him the spare roomPhilip said not a word He at once built up a lire In the room and In a few moments Invited the man Into It Brother Man he said simply stay here as If thin were your own house You are welcome for the night Yes heartily welcome said Phil ips wife as If to make amends for any doubts she bad felt before For reply tlio Brother Man raised his hand almost as It In benediction And they left him to his rest CHAPTER XII In the morning Philip knocked at hIs guests door to waken him for break fast Not a sound could be heard with- In lie waited a little while and then knocked again It was as still as before lie opened the door softly and looked In To his amazement there was no one there The bed was made up neatly everything In the room was In Its place but the strange being who had called himself Brother Man was gonePhilip exclaimed and his wife came In So our queer guest has flown lie must have been very still about It I heard no noise Where do you suppose ho Is7 And who do you suppose be Is Are you sure there ever was such a person Philip Dont you think you dreamed all that about the Brother Man Mrs Strong bad not quite for given Philip for his skeptical question Ing of the reality of the man with the lantern who had driven the knife Into the desk Yes Its your turn now Sarah WeU If our Brother Man was a dream be was the most curious dream this family ever bad and It he was crazy he was the most remarkable InsaneI person 1 ever saw Of course he was crazy All that be saW about our living so extrava gantly Do you think he was crazy In that particular naked Philip In a strange voice Ills wife noticed It at the time but Its true significance did not become real to her until afterward lie went to the front door and found It was un locked Evidently the guest had gone out that way The heavy storm of the night had covered up any possible signs of footsteps It was still snowing furl ouslyPhilip went Into hIs study for the forenoon as usual but he did very little writing ills wife could hear him pacing the floor restlessly About 10 oclock he came down stairs and declared his Intention of going out Into the storm to see It he couldnt set tie down to work better Ho wont out awl did not return until the middle of the afternoon Mrs Strong was a little alarmed Where havo you been all this time Philip In this terrible storm too Tou are a monument of snow Stand out here In the kitchen while I sweep you off- Philip obediently stood still while this wife walked around him with a broom and good naturedly submitted to being swept down as If I were be Jug worked Into shape far a snow ran be said Where havo you been Give an ac tount of yourself HI have been seeing how some other peoplo live Sarah the Brother Man WaS not so very crazy after all Ho has more than half converted me Did you find out anything about hIm rYea several of the older citizens hero recognized my description of him They say lie Is harmless and has quite Ill history was once a wealthy mill owner In Clinton Ho wanders about the country living with any ono who wIn take him In It is a queer case I I must find out more about him But m hun Can I have a bite of some hingIlaventyou had dinner No havent had time When have you been Among the tenements V How are the people getting on i tieror I cannot tell It almost chokes m- ol eat when I think of It Now Philip what makes you take jt BO seriously How can you help all that suffering You arc not to blame torItMaybe I am for a part of It But whether 1 am or not there the suffer- Ing la And I dont know that wo ought to ask who Is to blame In such cases I jLjt any rate supposing tho fathers and then In tho tenements are to blamo themselves by their own sinfulness does that make Innocent children and iMlpleM babes any warmer or better clothed and fedSarah I have seen thugs In these four hours time that mike me want to Join the bomb throw r of Btaropo almost I alts Strong came up behind his chair lair be eat at the table eating and placed tierband on his brow She grew more kii ilaJ1u ovav hlairromu i y personal reeling ror others n seemed to her It WAB becoming a passion with him wearing him out and she feared Its results as winter deepened and the strike In the mills remained unbroken You cannot do moro than one man Philip she said with a sigh HNo but It I can only make the church see Its duty at this time and act the Cbrlstllke way a great many per sons will bo saved He dropped his knife and fork wheeled around abruptly In hid chair and faced her with tho question Would you sire up this homo and be content to live In a elm pler fashion than we hare been used to since we came borer Yes replied his wife quietly twill go anywhere and suffer anything with you What Is it you are thinking1 of now ISIawhat Christ would require of me My dear I am sure we shall bo led by the spirit of truth to do what Is necessary and for the hotter saving of men Ho kissed his wife tenderly and wont up stairs again to his work All through the rest of tho afternoon and In the evening as bo shaped his church and pulpit work tho words of the Brother Man rang In his cars and the situation at the tenements rose In the successive panoramas before his eyes As the storm Increased In fury with the coming darkness he felt that It was typical In a certain sense of his own condition IIo abandoned the work ho had been doing at his desk and kneeling down at his couch he prayed Mrs Strong coming up to the study to see how his work was getting on found him kneeling there and went and knelt beside him while together they sought tho light through the stormSo the weeks went by and the first Sunday of the next month found Phil ips Christ message even more direct and personal than any he had brought to his people before lIe bad spent much of the tlmo going late the work Ingmens houses The tenement die trict was becoming familiar territory to him now lie bad settled finally what his own action ought to be In that action his wife fully concurred And the members of Calvary church coming In that Sunday morning were astonished at the message of their pass tor as he spoke to them from the standpoint of modern Christ I said a month ago that the age In which we live demands a simpler less extravagant style of living 1 did not mean by that to condemn the beauties of art or the marvels of science or the products of civilization 1 merely em phasized what I believe U a mighty but neglected truth In our modern civ ilization that If we would win men to Christ we must adopt more of his spirit of simple and consecrated sell dental I wish to bo distinctly under stood as 1 go on that 1 do not condemn any man simply because be Is rich or live In a luxurious house enjoying every comfort of modern civilization every delicacy of the season and all physical desires What 1 do wish dis tlnctly understood Is the belief which baa been burned deep into me ever since coming to this town that It the members of this church wish to honor the Hood of the church and bring men to believe him and save thorn In this Ute and the next they must be willing to do far more than they have yet done to mako use of tho physical com forts and luxuries of their homes for the blowing and Christianizing of this community In this particular I have myself failed to set you an example Tho fact that I havo so failed Is my only reason for making this matter public this morning The situation In Milton today 1 Is ex ceedingly serious I do not need to provo It to you by figures If any bust- nees man will go through the tenements bo will acknowledge my statements It any woman will contrast those dens with her own home she will If Christ Is a power In her heart stand In horror before such a travesty- on the sacred thought of honor The destitution of tho neighborhood is alarming The number of men out of work Is dangerous Tho complete ro movat of all sympathy between tho church up here on this street and the cocmont district Is sadder than death Oh my beloved Philip stretched out de arms and uttered a cry that rang In the ears of those who beard it and ro oatned with some of them a memory foe years these things ought not so to bd Where IIs tho Christ spirit with 117 Have wo not sat In our comforts bIe houses and eaten our pleasant food and dressed In tho nest clothing and poo to amusements and entertain merits without number while Gods- pax have shivered on the streets and- We sinful ones bavo sneered at Chrls tlanlty as they have walked bf our church doss 7 It ta true we hays given money tfl d writable cataw It is true the town connell has organized a bureau tar t tij- Dare and maintenance of those In Trjyrt- t la true members of Calvary church with other churches at this ttD1f Mrs dens something to rettere tbma-te l divtreM of tits town but amrtxrsclt have we given of ourselves to those h- aaa4dtIw itiAtr7tAMrllit tbi iAw ana win them to Bring back llnmanR to God and the Christ the Christian must do something different from the giving of money now and then 7 lie must give a part of himself That was my reason for urging you to move thIs church building away from this street Into the tenement district that wo might give ourselves to the peoplo there The Idea Is the same In what I now propose But you will pardon mo If first of an I announce my owl as don which 1 believe IIs demanded by the times and would bo approved by our Lord Philip stepped up nearer tho front ot the platform and spoke with an added earnestness and power which thrlllet every hearer A part of the great eon filet through which be bad gone that past month shone out In his pale taCO and found partial utterance In his Im passioned speech especially as he drew near the end The very abrupt ness of his proposition smote the pee pic Into breathless attention The parsonage In which I am living Is a large even a luxurious dwelling It has nine large rooms You an familiar with Its furnishings The sal ary this church pays mo Is 2000 a year a sum which more than provides for my necessary wants What I have decided to do iIs this I wish this church to reduce this salary onehalf and takq the other thousand dollars to the fitting up the pisonage for a refuse ton homeless children or for some Hucb purpose which will commend itsclftti your best judgment There Is money enough In this church alone to main rain such an Institution handsomely and not a single member of Calvary suffer any hardship whatever I will mow into a house nearer the lower part of the town where I can more easily reach after the people and live more among them That Is what I propose for mysulf It is not because I believe the rich and the educated tin not need the gospel or the church The rich and the poor both need tho life more abundantly But I am firmly convinced that as matters now are the church membership through pulpit and pew must give itself more than in the later ages of tho world It has done for the sake of winning men The form of self denial must take a defi nite physical genuinely sacrificing shape The church must get back to the apostolic times In some particu lars and an adaptation of community of goods and a sharing of certain aspects of civilization must mark the church membership of the coming twentieth century An object lesson In self de- nIal largo enough for men to see a self denial that actually gives up lux uries money and even pleasuresthis- is the only kind that will make much Impression on the people I believe If Christ was on earth he would again can for this expression of loyalty to him He would again say So likewise whosoever ho be of you that for eaheth not all that he bath he cannot be my disciple All tills Is what I call on the mem hers of this church to do Do I say that you ought to abandon your own houses and live somewhere else No I can decide only for myself In a mat ter of that kind But this much I do eay Give ourselves In somo genuine way to save this town from Its evil wretchedness It Is not so much your money as your own soul that the sick ness of the world needs This plan has occurred to me Why could not every family in this church become a savior to some other family Interest Itself In the other know the extent of its wants as far as possible go to It In person let the Christian home tOme Into actual touch with the unChrIstianIn short become a natural savior to one family There are dozens of families in this church that could do that It would take money It would take tlmo It would mean real self denial It would call for all your Christian grace and courage but what docs all this church membership and church life mean If not just such sacrifice We cannot give anything to this ago of moro value than our own selves The world of sin and want and de- spaIr and disbelief Is not hungering for money or mission schools or char ity balls or state Institutions for the relict of distress but for live pulsing loving Christian men and women who reach out live warm bands who are willing to go and give themselves who will abandon If necessary If Christ calls for It the luxuries they have these many years enjoyed In order that the bewildered disheartened dIs- contented unhappy sinful creatures of earth may actually learn of tho lovo of God through the love of man And that is the only way the world ever aas learned of the love of God Hn tunnlty brought that lovo to tho heart of the race and It will continue so to do until this earths tragedy is all play ed and the last Tight put out Mem bore of Calvary church I call on you In Christs name this day to do something for your Master that win realty show tho world that you are what you say you are when you claim to be a disciple of that one who although be was rich yet for our sakes became poor giving up all heavens glory In exchange for all earths misery the ond of which was a cruel and bloody crucifixion Are we Christs disciples unless we are wining to follow him In this particular Wo are not our own prtceWbf11 dosed Calvary church was stirred to Its Depths There were more excited pee bio talking together all over tho church Than Philip bad ever seen before He greeted several strangers as usual and was talking with one of them when me of the trustees came up and said the board would Ute to meet him If convenient tar him us soon as ho was It liberty mntp accordingly waited in one of the Sunday school classrooms with tfeV trustees who had met Immediately aft n the sermon and decided to hare an instant conference WIth the pastor CHAPTER Xin 111 1 gjffit fit asrrotti Ao and rump ana the trustees were to gather There was a moment of ember raising silence and then the spokes man for the board a nervous little man said Mr Strong we hardly know just what to say to this proposition of yours this morning about going out of the parsonage and turning It Into anI orphan asylum But It Is certainly a- very remarkable proposition and we felt as It we ought to meet you at one and talk It over Its simply Impossible spoke up one of tM trustees In the first place It Is Impracticable as a business proposition Do you think sot asked Phllli quietlyIt I out of the questionI said the first speaker excitedly The church will never listen to It In the world For illY part If Brother Strong wishes toAt that moment the sexton knocked- at the door and said n man was outside very anxious to see the minister and have him come down to his house There had been an accident or a fight or something Some one was dying nnd wanted Mr Strong at once So Philip hastily excused himself and went out leaving tho trustees together The door was hardly shut again when the speaker who had been Inter rupted jumped to his feet claimed As 1 was saying for my pee Brother Strong wishes to Indulge a this eccentric action be will not have the Miutlun of my vote In the matter It certainty is an entirely unheard of and uncalled for proposition- Mr Strong liars no doubt a generous motive in this proposed action said a third member of the board but the church certainly will not approve any such step as the giving up of the par sonage lie exaggerates the need of such a sacrifice I think we ought to reason him out of the Idea Wo called XIr Strong to tho pastorate of Calvary church said another and It seems to me ho came under the conditions granted In our call For tho church to allow such an absurd thing as the giving up of the parsonage to this proposed outside work would be a very unwise wove Yes and more than that said the first speaker I want to say very frankly that 1 am growing tired of the way things here gone since Mr Strong came to us What business has Cal vary church with all thco outside matters these labor troubles and un employed men and all the other mat ters that bare boon made tho subject of preaching lately I want a minister who looks alter his own parish Mr Strong does not call on his own people lie has DOt been Inside my house but once since be came to Milton Breth ren there is a growing fooling of discontent over this matter Thero was a short pause and then one of the members said Surely If llr Strong feels dissatis ned with his surroundings In the par sonage or tools as If his work lay In another diwctJon ho Is at liberty to choose another parish But be is tho finest pulpit minister we ever had and no one doubts his entire sincerity lie Is a remarkable man In many re spects Yes but lnocrUy may be a very awkward thing carried too tar And In this matter of the personage I dont see how the trustees can allow It Why what wouW the other churches think of IU Calvary church cannot allow anything of the kind for tbo sake of Its reputation But 1 would like to hear Mr WluHife opinion He has not ape ken yet The rust turned to the mill owner who as chairman of time board usual ly had much to say and was regarded as a shrewd and careful business adviser In the excitement of the occa sion and discussion tho usual formalities of a regular board meeting had been Ignored Mr WhrWr was evidently embarrass cd Ho had listened to the discussion of the minister with his head bent down and hts thoughts In a whirl of emotion both tar and against tho pas tor His naturally Inclined business haoits contended against tho proposi tion to give up the parsonage His feelings of gratitude to the minister for his personal help the night of the at tack by the mob rose up to defend him There was with It nil an undercurrent of self administered rebuko that tho pastor bad set the whole church an ex ample of usefulness Ho wondered how many of the members would vol untarily give up half theIr Incomes for tho good of humanity He wondered In a confused way how much he sermonhim There Is ono point wo havo not die cussed yet bo said at last and that Is Mr Strongs offer of half his sal ary to tarry on the work of a ebB drens refuge or something of that kindHow can wo accept such an offer Calvary church has always beUorod In paying Its minister a good salary Ttnd paying It promptly and wo warn our minister to llvo decently and I know others who feel as I do If matters go on In this way much longer I tell you Brother Winter Calvary church Is very near a crisis Look at the Guldens and the Malvcrns and the Albergs They are all leaving us and the plain reason Is the nature of the preaching Why you know yourself Brother Winter that never has the pulpit of Calvary church heard such preaching on peoples private affairs Mr Winter colored and replied angri ly What has that to do with this present matter It the minister wants to live In a simpler style I dont see what business we have to stop It As to the disposition of the parsonage that Iis a matter of business which rests with the church to arrange The nervous Irritable little man who bad spoken oftenest rose to his feet and exclaimed You can count me out of all this then I wash my hands ot the whole affair And he went out of the room leaving the rest of the hoard somewhat surprised at hIs sudden OM parturo They remained about a quarter of an hour longer discussing the matter and finally at Mr Winters suggestion a committee was appointed to go and see the minister the next evening and seei If be conld not be persuaded to modify or change hIs proposition made in the morning sermon The rest of tho trus tees Insisted that Mr Winter himself should act as chairman of the commit tee and after some remonstrance ho finally with great reluctance agreed to do so So Philip next evening as bo sat In hIs study mapping out the weeks work and wondering a little what the church would do In the face of his pro posal received the committee welcom lag them In hIs bright hearty man nerolIe had been notified on Sunday evening of the approaching confer ence The committee consisted of Mr Winter and two other members of the boardMr Winter opened the conversation with considerable embarrassment and an evident reluctance for his share In thematterMr we have come as you are aware to talk over your proposi lion of yesterday morning concerning tho parsonage It was a great surprise to us all- Philip smiled a little Mrs Strong says I act too much on Impulse and do not prepare people enough for my statements But one of tho greatest men I ever knew used to say that an Impulse was a good thing to obey In stantly If there was no doubt of Its be ing a right one And do you consider this proposed movo of yours a right one Mr Strong asked Mr Winter- I do replied Philip with quIet emphasis I do not regret making It and I believe it Is my duty to abide by my original decision Do you mean that you Intend actually to move out of this parsonage asked one of the other members of the committeeYes hllip said It so quietly and yet so decidedly that tho men were si1 lent a moment Then Mr Winter saidMr Strong this matter Is likely to causo trouble In tho church and wo might as well understand It frankly Tho trustees believe that as the parsonage belongs to tho church proper ty and was built for tho minister ho ought to live in it The church will not understand your desire to move outDo you understand It Mr Win ter Pblllp put the question point blankNo I dont know that I do whol lyMr Winter colored and replied In a hesitating manne- rI gave my reasons yesterday morn- Ing I do not know that I can mako them plainer The truth Is I cannot go on preaching to my people about living on a simpler basis while I con tInuo to live In surroundings that on the face of them contradict my own convictions In other words I am living beyond my necessities here I bavo Uved all my life surrounded by the luxuries of civilization If now I desire to glvo these benefits to those who have never enjoyed them or to know from nearer contact something Df tho bitter struggle of the poor why should I be hindered from putting that deslro into practical tormr The
