through the body with a Winchester rifle fired from the third story of the state house at Frankfort Ho was walKing toward the state house in company with Jack Chinn when assassinated Four or five shots were fired and Goebel was probably fatally5 wounded He was carried to his room at the Capital hotel immediately where he has received the best medical aid and nurses care I EXCITEMENT AND CONFUSION Intense excitement prevailed throughout Frankfortand for a time countyJi Thousands of telegrams ofcondolence to Goebel were received and the greatest sympathy manifested inhiscondition By order of Governor Taylor the town was in the hands of the militia by which means amob was prevented i 4 STATE HOUSE GUARDED f Goebel passed a quiet night but was barely alive on Wednesday morning The excitement wasstill high and his followers were deter tt mined to make him Governor The legislators were refused entrance Y to the Capitol building by the militia They tried the opera house iUen the presence Hof nurses and physicians Wm Goe r bel propped up in his bed and suffering greatly took the oath of office and immediately issued a proclamation ordering away the militia w THINKS HE SWILL RECOVER Thursday morning Goebel seemed slightly bettor but had a sink ing spell about noon He has been conscious all the time and insists thJIthe will recover The physicians think that his recovery would be l almost a miracle In the evening Goebel rallied and passed another quiet night APPEAL TO MCKINLEY i t r With two Governors in Frankfort and a standing army things had about reached a climax the bedside of Goebel who fluctuated between life and death He was kept alive with oxy gen and artificial blood until seven oclock when he died At the last ho was alone with his brother and sister His other brother Justus Goebel with his wife and children arrived from Arizona a few minutes too late to see their brother aliv- eGOEBELS LAST WORDS Early in the day Goebel made his last request Ho said Tell my friends to be brave and fearless and loyal to the groat common people Previously he had said to his friend John Hendrick You have a charge keep it Several ministers visited and prayed with him To one ho said that ho wanted the world to know that he believedand trusted in a Supremo Being BECKHAM SWORN INIWithin an hour after Goobols death J C P Beckham of Bards town was sworn in as Governor in the presence of Senator Blackburn and others The papers had all been prepared previously and only lacked the signatures This was quickly arranged and Beckham took the oath of office His first official act was to issue a proclamation an nouncing the death of acting Governor Goebel and dispersing the militia ALONZO WALKER- One of tho most sensational turns of the Frankfort melee was the arrest of Alonzo Walker the court stenographer for attempting to serve upon Governor Taylor an injunction for preventing the meeting of the General Assembly He was held in custody until Monday when his friends procured his release He has since filed a suit in the courts against Governor Taylor for500 00 for unlawful detention REWARDS OFFERED FOR ASSASSIN The state of Kentucky has offered a reward of 50000 for the finder of Goebels assassin Besides the private reward of 8500 offered by Governor Taylor many towns and individuals have pledgedsums ranging from t50 to 1000 for the capture of the murderer FACTS ABOUT GOEBEL William Goebel was born of German parentage in the state of Pennsylvania in the year 1865 He was the oldest of four children the others being Justus Minnie and Arthur When William was seven years old the family came to Covington Ky where William was educated in the public school After a few months in a jewelers store he began the study of law and at the age of twentyono began to practice in the office of exGovernor Stephenson In a few years he became the law partner of John G Carlisle with whom he remained five years PEACE IN SIGHT e The peace conference between seven representative of the Repub Bean party and seven representatives of the Democratic party heldat the Galt house Monday night resulted in a truce and probable final peace The meeting was held until three oclock in the morning when the result was made public through the press THE PEACE MAKERS The Republicins in the conference were John Marshall Judge John W Barr Gen Dan Lindsoy T J Edelin Dr T H Baker David W Fairleigh C T Ballard The Democratic representatives were J C S Blackburn J C W Beckham Sam J Shackelford Urey Woodson James B McCreary and Phil Thompson THE AGREEMENT Taylors troops are to be withdrawn except a guard to remain until after Thursday There will be no session at London and the legislature will meet in the state house Both parties agree to abide by the action taken in joint session o legislature in the matter ofcont- estFUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS The funeral services of Wm Goebel will be held at Frankfort at 12 oclock tomorrow morning at the Capital hotel The ministers in charge will be Rev Thomas Arnold of Frankfort Rev Wm Stanley of Nicholasville and Rev Charles Mann of Paris At the grave a short prayer will be said and a speech made over the body of euddenly Sunday February 4that the home of Capt and MraEogllsh She was buried from the same residence Monday morning and her funeral wee attended by many friends of both colors Aunt Lou wee seventyfour years old and one of the few remaining old time darkies She was hared by Oap tain Englishs mother who gave her to her married daughter when Aunt Louise was sixteen years old In time she came to make her homa with Cap talnand Mrs Enfflleh where she hat llyed and served thirtyfour years She was a faithful servant and a veritable Black mammy to the Eng lish children Her last gage were Grown Packed and Labeled By Mrs W L Burton of Colton CONRAD SIMONS VISITTO COLTON There was a pleased smile on several faces in the NEWS office Saturday morn ing when Mr Conrad Simons of Toblns port appeared with a basket of California fruit as a present to the editor from Mr and Mrs W L Burton of Colton California The fruit came from Mrs Burtons orchard and was a good sample of all the delicious fruits grown in South ern California Thero were the shad dock the gripe fruit the large California orange the kid clove orange the pomegranate and several other varieties f Californias best They were moot daintily packed and labeled and tasted quite as well as they looked Mrs Burton is a sister of Mr Conrad Simons and has lived for fifteen years at Colton fifty miles from Los Angeles Both Mr and Mrs Burton are delighted with their Southern home where they have been quite successful In fruit grow ing as well as in other lines of business They have been visited this winter by Mr and Mrs Conrad Simons who are enthusiastic over the California climate and other delightful conditions They witnessed the Tournament of Roses on New Years day at Pauulema in which General Shatter WAS one of themost con spicuous figures Mr Simons also visit ed a miners camp near tne top of Old Bady He says that though these men are seeking gold they are not gold bugs and all save one are in favor of both metals and naturally I made inquiries of Mr Cunningham as to what in the world was he doing with two coons Why said heI have no pet coons Well Il tell you the story I have an exceedingly fine cat and the whole family have become much attached to her On one bright Bunny morning I strolled to the barn and to my amazement found her with a litter of four pretty kittens Two were coons and two were kittens Mr Keith lays the sight was grand and made an offer of 1 for one coon but no attention was granted his request Here is an excellent opportunity for some side show performer to obtain a family of war chiefs was standing off the British advance as the Boers have been do log since October and with true sav age tactics managed to fall upon and use up Isolated detachments of the white soldiers One day be crossed the Buffalo river and slaughtered the British column at Isandlana a few miles below Dundee where the Boers and Britons first fought The Britons bad crossed Buffalo river at Korkcs Drift making that point a hospital and supply station While tho fight was going on at Isandlana there were 80 fighting men and 30 Invalids at Rorkes Drift In the middle of tho afternoon a survivor from tho massacre at Isandlana mounted upon a foaming steed which reeled on his last spurt came to tho little camp and cried out a warning easily of Interpretation Stand to arms and defend yourselvesI The Zu lus are coming A stone and brick dwelling and church formed tho do fenses of Rorkes Drift Tho dwelling served as a hospital and the church as a storehouse and stable Outside was a kraal and all lay open to attack The garrison set to work to make a curtain for defense connecting house and church and kraal Wagons and mealies bags were made Into a rampart doors and windows barred and loopholes pierced In tho walls While this was going on 10 native troopers of Dnrnfords horse rode to the Drift Colonel Durnford had been killed at Isandlana and the men were shaky With 200 native footmen they were sent to the front to bold off the Zulus while the garrison worked on tho ramparts Lieutenant Chard known as the hero of Rorkes Drift was In command of the post The Zulus had picked up some Brit ish guns and announced their coming by shots at long range There were 1500 of them under the lead of Ccte wayos brother At the first sound of battle music the friendly natives all skedaddled and left poor Chard and his handful to their fate The savages crossed tho river at a distance from the Drift and got upon high ground where they could shoot down upon the buildings But they were poor bands with rifles and tailed to do much execution Finally they charged In the famous horn formation and surrounded the place This Is not a story of the fight so much us of the specimen pluck of a Briton or two just to show what may be expected In the Boor war It Tommy Atkins has not sadly degenerated In pace with the English aristocracy The main fighting force lay behind the parapet At the end of the hospital far thest from the storehouse and the ram parts were stationed Privates John Williams Joseph Williams Cole and Henry Hook Tho Wllllamses de fended a ward with four patients and Colo and Hook a room next to a ward containing six patients When tho Zu lus came on Cole went out and joined the main body at the ramparts and was killed there That left Hook alone In his Isolated corner With a Martini Henry rifle he fired at the Zulus through the loopholes The Wllllamsps did tbe same After some rapid work Hook found his cartridge was caught iti the heated barrel Some time was lost forcing it down with a ramrod and the enemy was then upon him He retreated to the ward under his careTho Wllllamses had killed 14 Zulus but finally a rush of savages burst a door In and Joseph Williams with two patients was dragged out and cut to pieces by the savages John mean while with a pick had made a hole through the wall Into Hooks ward and with his two patients joined Hook The main body of English had been driven from the line of defense at tho rampart and were distributed behind piles of biscuit boxes and other cover selling life as dearly as possible The Zulus broke Into tho hospital through the front doors and set fire to the root of grassNow said Hook to Williams make a hole with your pick through Jnto the next room while I defend this doorwoy Its our only chancel Tho Zulus were already at the door An as Bagal struck Hook In the head before ho could fire n shot but bo kept his feet and a cool nerve Every time ho fired a Zulu went down If the rush was too sudden for fire ho used his bayonet Seven Zulus lay in front of the door but their fellows pushed on as only savages can despising death if it could but follow revenge They seized tho muzzle of Hooks gun and tried to wrest it from his grasp The overheated barrel blistered the brave fellows hands and overhead the fire crackled In the straw thatch Ammu nition was getting low the sick could offer no helD and Williams had hit own usx or cutting an egress tnrougn the wall Finally the hole was open and WU llama dragged seven men through Hook left hIs post and seized thet eighth patient but as he reached thet opening a Zulu bullet struck the sick marl and1 Hook forted htm through breaking a leg for tho poor fellow al though saving his life There was but one egress from the room where the two sound and eight helpless men werei beleaguered and this led out among the Zulus so it was decided to work their way back to the main body of defenses Hook stood at tilet hole and Williams again plied thet pick Twice they retreated until they stood In a room with two doors open- Ing out upon the Zulus and a window on the side where It was supposed the malu body of English still held their parapet One of the patients became crazed at the sight of the Zulus and rushed out among them only to bo hacked to pieces with due ceremony While this was occupying their atton tion Hook and Williams put the remaining sick men through the window and climbed after them Tho last car tridge was gone But with the party outside the build Ing It seemed for a moment as though tho escape Was only a jump from tho frying pan Ihto the fire Their com rades bad been driven from the first line and were 100 feet from the hos Vital wall The Intervening space was covered with dead Zulus showing that It lay within the zone of attack It was swept by Zulu bullets and assagais but salvation could only be had by crossing this field of death Williams and six sick men crossed first without Injury Then Hook shouldered the soy enth man one having two broken legs and made a struggle for cover The burden was limp and hung like a sack An assagai struck the man but was turned aside by his thick overcoat Hook panted In his struggle he reeled under his burden but by efforts more than human be reached the barricade and was drawn Inside with his helpless charge As soon as ho could get his breath ho took a rifle and made
