U FEBRUARY 7 1900 II BRECKENRIDGE NEWS PURE BRITISH GRIT A SOUTH AFRICAN FIGHT THAT TRIED I MENS SOULS peravte Valor In the Defense of the HoapltsU at UorUea Drift In the Zulu War The Victoria Crosji Won br Prlrate Soldier Copyright 1S99 by O L Kllmerl OER and Briton will havo It out In South Africa- Everybody out side of England expects that tho honors of per sonal pluck and prowess will surely rest with the Boers whichever way the victory goes Hero Is a story of bulldog Brit- Ish grit display ed on the border between the Transvanl and Natal In the Zulu war- Cctcwayo last of the great Zulu war chiefs was standing off the British advance as the Boers have been do log since October and with true sav age tactics managed to fall upon and use up Isolated detachments of the white soldiers One day be crossed the Buffalo river and slaughtered the British column at Isandlana a few miles below Dundee where the Boers and Britons first fought The Britons bad crossed Buffalo river at Korkcs Drift making that point a hospital and supply station While tho fight was going on at Isandlana there were 80 fighting men and 30 Invalids at Rorkes Drift In the middle of tho afternoon a survivor from tho massacre at Isandlana mounted upon a foaming steed which reeled on his last spurt came to tho little camp and cried out a warning easily of Interpretation Stand to arms and defend yourselvesI The Zu lus are coming A stone and brick dwelling and church formed tho do fenses of Rorkes Drift Tho dwelling served as a hospital and the church as a storehouse and stable Outside was a kraal and all lay open to attack The garrison set to work to make a curtain for defense connecting house and church and kraal Wagons and mealies bags were made Into a rampart doors and windows barred and loopholes pierced In tho walls While this was going on 10 native troopers of Dnrnfords horse rode to the Drift Colonel Durnford had been killed at Isandlana and the men were shaky With 200 native footmen they were sent to the front to bold off the Zulus while the garrison worked on tho ramparts Lieutenant Chard known as the hero of Rorkes Drift was In command of the post The Zulus had picked up some Brit ish guns and announced their coming by shots at long range There were 1500 of them under the lead of Ccte wayos brother At the first sound of battle music the friendly natives all skedaddled and left poor Chard and his handful to their fate The savages crossed tho river at a distance from the Drift and got upon high ground where they could shoot down upon the buildings But they were poor bands with rifles and tailed to do much execution Finally they charged In the famous horn formation and surrounded the place This Is not a story of the fight so much us of the specimen pluck of a Briton or two just to show what may be expected In the Boor war It Tommy Atkins has not sadly degenerated In pace with the English aristocracy The main fighting force lay behind the parapet At the end of the hospital far thest from the storehouse and the ram parts were stationed Privates John Williams Joseph Williams Cole and Henry Hook Tho Wllllamses de fended a ward with four patients and Colo and Hook a room next to a ward containing six patients When tho Zu lus came on Cole went out and joined the main body at the ramparts and was killed there That left Hook alone In his Isolated corner With a Martini Henry rifle he fired at the Zulus through the loopholes The Wllllamsps did tbe same After some rapid work Hook found his cartridge was caught iti the heated barrel Some time was lost forcing it down with a ramrod and the enemy was then upon him He retreated to the ward under his careTho Wllllamses had killed 14 Zulus but finally a rush of savages burst a door In and Joseph Williams with two patients was dragged out and cut to pieces by the savages John mean while with a pick had made a hole through the wall Into Hooks ward and with his two patients joined Hook The main body of English had been driven from the line of defense at tho rampart and were distributed behind piles of biscuit boxes and other cover selling life as dearly as possible The Zulus broke Into tho hospital through the front doors and set fire to the root of grassNow said Hook to Williams make a hole with your pick through Jnto the next room while I defend this doorwoy Its our only chancel Tho Zulus were already at the door An as Bagal struck Hook In the head before ho could fire n shot but bo kept his feet and a cool nerve Every time ho fired a Zulu went down If the rush was too sudden for fire ho used his bayonet Seven Zulus lay in front of the door but their fellows pushed on as only savages can despising death if it could but follow revenge They seized tho muzzle of Hooks gun and tried to wrest it from his grasp The overheated barrel blistered the brave fellows hands and overhead the fire crackled In the straw thatch Ammu nition was getting low the sick could offer no helD and Williams had hit own usx or cutting an egress tnrougn the wall Finally the hole was open and WU llama dragged seven men through Hook left hIs post and seized thet eighth patient but as he reached thet opening a Zulu bullet struck the sick marl and1 Hook forted htm through breaking a leg for tho poor fellow al though saving his life There was but one egress from the room where the two sound and eight helpless men werei beleaguered and this led out among the Zulus so it was decided to work their way back to the main body of defenses Hook stood at tilet hole and Williams again plied thet pick Twice they retreated until they stood In a room with two doors open- Ing out upon the Zulus and a window on the side where It was supposed the malu body of English still held their parapet One of the patients became crazed at the sight of the Zulus and rushed out among them only to bo hacked to pieces with due ceremony While this was occupying their atton tion Hook and Williams put the remaining sick men through the window and climbed after them Tho last car tridge was gone But with the party outside the build Ing It seemed for a moment as though tho escape Was only a jump from tho frying pan Ihto the fire Their com rades bad been driven from the first line and were 100 feet from the hos Vital wall The Intervening space was covered with dead Zulus showing that It lay within the zone of attack It was swept by Zulu bullets and assagais but salvation could only be had by crossing this field of death Williams and six sick men crossed first without Injury Then Hook shouldered the soy enth man one having two broken legs and made a struggle for cover The burden was limp and hung like a sack An assagai struck the man but was turned aside by his thick overcoat Hook panted In his struggle he reeled under his burden but by efforts more than human be reached the barricade and was drawn Inside with his helpless charge As soon as ho could get his breath ho took a rifle and made one more In the line of gallant defenders of Rorkos Drift behind the rampart of biscuit boxes By firing tho thatch of the hospital tho Zulus had spoiled their own game for night came on and the fiames lit up the scene so that It was death for a savage to break from cover Already their fallen mado a second rampart on tho narrow field of fighting but with their wild frenzy worked up by war dances they stopped at nothing Six times they pushed on over the heaps of their dead and reached the English parapet With the bayonet tho heroic English drove them off and then sallied out chasing them from tho field A Zulu tried to fire tho grass roof of the storehouse but a well aimed bullet brought him down At 3 oclock In the morning after 11 hours of steady resistance there was HOOK SHOULDERED TIlE SEVENTH MAN a lull The savages seemed to have hind enough of It Theta dead number ed between 300 and 400 but tim Brit- Ish had lost but 17 killed Tho survivors of the garrison set to work to strengthen their position ready for a return of the Zulus at daybreak Men climbed to the roof of the storehouse to strip It so that It could not be fired antI from this lookout saw a horde of dusky figures creeping up to surprise the garrison Tho men at the barn cade wcro warned and the soldiers IhP OverWork Weakens Your 1Kidneys Unhealthy Kidneys Make Impure Blood All the blood In your body trees one of tho most curious nests of that kind being that of tho baya bird of India It Is hung from tho branch with Its opening at the bottom and hangs like an Inverted bottle secure from the approach of tree snakes and other reptiles The most curious thing about the baya bird Is that It is said to light up its nest by sticking fireflies on its sides with clay or soft mud There seems to be little doubt of the fact Dr Buchanan saysUAt night each of tho habitations is lighted up by a firefly stuck in the top with a piece of clay The nest consists of two rooms Sometimes there aro three or four fire flies and their blaze in the little cells dazzles tho eyes of the bats which of ten destroy tho young of these birds Perhaps other animals are scared off by tho baya birds electric light slnco a writer in Nature records this curious observation I have been informed on sate authority that the Indian bottle bird protects his nest at night by sticking several of these glow beetles around the entrance by means of clay and only a few days back an Intimate friend of my own was watching three rats on a roof rafter of his bungalow When a glow fly lodged very close to them the rats I must be about my Musters business What will the church do for supplies Dont worry Philip The church will take care of that But Philip was already eager to get to work Only the assurance of the surgeon that he might possibly get out In a little over three weeks satisfied him Sunday came and passed Some one from a neighboring town who happen ed to be visiting In Milton occupied tho pulpit and Philip hail a quiet restfull day Ho started In the week determin ed to beat the doctors time for cry and having a remarkably song constitution and a tremendous will he bade fair to be limping about the house In two weeks Ills shoulder wound healed very fast Ills knee bothered him and It seemed likely that he would go lame for a lung time But he was not concerned about that It only he could go about In any sort of fashion once more Wednesday of that week he was sur prised In an unexpected manner by an event which did more than anything else to hasten his recovery Ho was still confined to bed down stairs when In the afternoon the bell rang and Mrs Strong went to the door supposing It was one of the church people come to Inquire about the minister She found Instead Alfred Burke Philips old col logo chum and seminary classmate Mrs Strong welcomed him heartily and In answer to his eager Inquiry con I corning Philips condition she brought him Into the room knowing her pa tient quite well and feeling sure the sight of his old chum would do him more good than harm The first thing Alfred said was 0111 man I hardly expected to see you again this side of heaven How dues It happen that however like an affecting thing that two bit grown up men like her husband and his old churn showed such tender affection for each other Tho love of men for men In the strong friendship of school anti college life Is one of the marks of human divinity CHAPTER In spite of his determination to get out and occupy his pulpit the first Sunday of the next month Philip was reluctantly obliged to let live Sundays go by before ho was able to preach During those six weeks his attention was called to a subject which ho felt ought to be made the theme of one of his talks or Christ and Modern Socie ty The lolsuro which he hind for rend lug opened hits eyes to the fact that Sunday In Milton was terribly desecrat ed Shops of nil kinds stood wide open Excursion trains ran Into the large city 40 miles away two theaters were always running with some variety show and the saloons In violation of nn ordinance forbidding It unblushing ly Hung their doors open and did more business on that day titan any other As Philip tzad the papers he noticed that every Monday morning the police court was more crowded with drunks and dlsordrllcs than on any other day In the week and the plain cause of It was the abuse of the day before In the summer time baseball games were played In Milton on Sunday In the fall and winter very many pcoplo spent their evenings In card playing or aimlessly strolling up and down the phlllIpsmaking up Christ would not keep silent before tho facts So ho carefully prepared a plain statement of his belief In standing on tho modern uso ChristsI tiny and as on tho other occasions when he hind spoken the first Sunday In the month he cast out of his reckon ing all thought of the consequences Ills ono purpose was to do Just as In his thought of Christ he would do with tint subject The people In Milton thought that the first Sunday Philip appeared In his pulpit he would naturally denounce the saloon again But when he finally re covered suUlclcntly to preach lie de termined that for awhile he would say nothing hi the way of sermons against tho whisky evil lie had n great horror of scenting to ride a hobby of be lug a man of one Idea anti tanking plO pie tired of him because he harped on one string lie hind uttered his de nunciation and he would wait a little before he spoke again The whisky power was not the onlyI bad thing In Milton that needed to be attacked There were other things which must be said And to Philip limped Into hid pulpit the third Sunday of the months and preached en u 6vunil1 tame to the disappointment of n great crowd almost us large an the lust ono he had faced And yet his very appuaraucc was n sermon In Itself against the In stitution he hall held up to public con demnation on that occasion Ills knee wound proved very stubborn and he limped badly That In Itself spoke eloquently of tine dastardly attempt ou Ills life Ills face was pale and ho had grown thin Ills shoulder was stiff and the enforced quietness of his delivery contrasted strangely with his customary fiery appearance on the platform Altogether that first Sunday of his reappearance In his pulpit was n stronger sermon against the sa loon than anything bo could have spo Ucu or written When the first Sunday In the next month came on Philip was more like his old self no hind gathered strength enough to go around two Sunday after noons and note for himself the dese cration of tho day as It went on reck lessly As bo saw It all It seemed to him that the church in Milton was practically doing nothing to stop the eviL All tho ministers complained of e the difficulty of getting an evening con gregation Yet hundreds of young people walked past nil tho churches every Sunday night bent on pleasure going to the theaters or concerts or parties wLlcb seemed to hoe no trou ble In attracting the crowd Espe cially was this true of the foreign population the working clement con nected with the mills It was a com mon occurrence for dog fights cock fights and shooting matches of various kinds to be going on In the tenement district ou Sunday and the police seemed powerless or careless In the matterAll this burned Into Philip llko molten metal and when he faced his people on time Sunday which wnll be coming a noted Sunday for them ho quivered with the earnestness nid thrill which nlwyn come to a III1CveI- lIInll when Ihe fails sure he I I1 n Ier urea wlleli mint be prciclii I taut n- II 1esEe while in people must hnr for their llviii- He took for a text Christs words The Sabbath was made for matt and at once defined Its meaning ns a special dayThe true meaning of our modern Sunday tray be summed up lu Itwu woriln rtMt and worship Unter tIn head cf rest may be gathered what ever Is needful for the proper nUll healthful 1recuperation of ouos physic al cord mental powers always regard I Ins nit simply our own ease and com fort but iilso the same right to rest ou the part of the remainder of the com munity Under the head of worshli may lie ithercd all those facts which either through dlstluct religious ser ice or work or thought tend to bring men Into closer and dearer relation to spiritual life to teach men larger sweeter truths of existence and of God and leave them better fitted to take up tho duties of everyday business Now It Is plain to me that If Christ were here today and pastor of Calvary church he would feel compelled to say some very plain words about the dose oration of Sunday In Milton Take for example the opening of the fruit stands and cigar stores and meat mar kets every Sunday morning What Is the one reason why these places are open this very minute while I am speaking There Is only one reason so that the owners of the places may sell their goods and make money They are not satisfied with what they can stake six days In the week Their greed seizes ou the one day which ought to be used for tin rest and worship men need and turns that also Into n day of merchandise Do we need any other fact to convince us of the terrible selfishness of the human heartOr take the case of tho saloons What right have they to open their doors In direct contradiction to the town ordinance forbidding It And yet this ordinance Is held by them In such contempt that this very morning as I came to this church I passel more than half a dozen of these sections of hell wide open to any poor sinning soul that might be enticed therein Citizens of Milton where does the re sponsibility rest for this violation of law Does It rust with the churches mid the preachers to sin that the few Sunday law wo have lire enforced by them while till IwnlnesH men and the police lazily dodge time issue and care not how the matter KOJS saying It Is none of their IniHliiPiss But suppose you say the saloons ate beyond your power That does not rcleane you from doing what Is In your power easily to prevent this day from being trampled under foot and made like every other day lu Its scramble after money nod pleasure Who own those fruit stands and cigar stores and meat markets and who patronize theta Is It not true that church members encourage all these places by purchasing of them on the Lords day I have been told by one of these fruit dealers with whom I have talked lately that among his best customers on Sunday are some of the most respected members of thus church It has also been told me that In the summer time the heaviest patronage of the Sunday Ice cream business Is from the church members of Milton Of what value Is It that we place on our ordinance rules forbidding the sale of these things covered by the law IIow far are we responsible for our example for en couraging the breaking of the day on the part of those who would thud It unprofitable to keep their business go- nr It i e did not purchase of them on this Hosteaa Iferroni I Writing on Making Company of Guests Edward Bok in The Ladles Homo Journal considers It a curious fact that American housewives are so loath to believe that a dinner with fuss and feathers Is dreaded by the vast majority of people The highest com I pliment wo can possibly show a guest at dinner Is to let him partake of an ordinary meal to let him come quietly In and be ono of tho family yet this t Is the very compliment which we withhold I from him Instead of giving a guest what ho would relish most we give him what ho really enjoys least Let a hostess be ever so graceful and tactful let there bo years of ex perience on her shoulders yet nothing can conceal from her guests that the dftr which she Is serving Is other thi i an unusual one It Is a formal af fair and no amount of grace can make anything else of it for nothing speaks so loudly or so unerringly as a formal company dinner Every course shows It every movement of the waitress proclaims it every piece of china fairly cries out the occasion And of course no ono at tho tablo really enjoys It The guest certainly does not becauso ho knows ho is being mado company ofand that feeling is always enough to grains from a trustworthy traveler who told him that they were taken from a sarcophagus It Is said that two of these seeds germinated but It Is a well known fact that Impostures are perpetrated by tho people who dispose of these seeds In some cases they have even stripped corn or maize Into thcso sarcophagi Many experiments have been made not only In this country but in Europe to determine tho vitality of various grain seeds Thus barley retains Its Vitality better than any other cereal and this Is said to retain its vitality from eight to ten years In tho case of wheat 00 to 100 per cent germinates In from one to four years In five to seven years 85 to 87 per cent In the case of rye the percentage of germina tion In five years dropped to 55 per cent In seven years 80 per cent nine years 13 per cent In the case of corn I mado somo experiments a few years ago to determine the vitality and found that corn which was kept In tightly closed vessels at the age of 20 years had lost all its power of germination Experiments also Indicate that corn kept even a few years became largely deteriorated and lost much of Its pow er of germination Even grass seeds which have been burled at some depth in tho soil and In vessels tightly scaled failed to germinate after a dozen or 15 yearsChlcago Chronicle Fright Not Fnsolnntlon Naturalists are not at all agreed upon the point as to that a bee would often visit as many as 27 flowers In tho course of a minute though with other plants In which the honey was difficult to extract the aver age would bo as low as seven Strik- Ing a mean between these two figures ono may say that an ordinary working bee visits 15 flowers a minute or 000 an hour Considering the late hours to which a bee works It Is probably no exaggeration to say that It Is busy for eight hours a day allowing for Intervals of rest This would make It visit 7200 flowers a day or 048000 In a period of six months Mr A S Wilson In a recent paper showed the enormous amount of labor gone through by bees In making even a small quantity of honey Ho found that approximately 125 heads of red clover yield 15 grains of sugar or 125 000 heads about two pounds As each head contains some CO florets it tot lows that 7500000 distinct flower tubes must bo sucked In order to obtain two pounds of sugar Now honey contains roughly speaking 75 per cent of sugar therefore the bees must make In round numbers 2500000 visits for one pound of honey Question la Unanswered A certain grocer on tho hill has for some days been looking for the owner of a voice that claimed his CHILDREN BY SIRS LUCY CLBAVB MBLBOY I have heard that threefourths of the farms of Kansas thatgreat farming state are run just now by women When first her rich prairies were open to the puullc many women went out and took ad vantage of Squatter Sovereignty to make homes for themselves and their loved ones j admirably did they succeed too in that most blessed occupation of womankindtilling the soil Hundreds of homes in Kansas were thus made without man ever owning a foot of their land or doing in iota of the work upon it Four girls old maids they called themselves went from the South and built a fourroom hut so situated that one room would be in a corner of each girls claim and she would be living on her own property and still have the pro tection and association of her friends These girls lived that way till time had giyen them the title to their places then for they had prospered wonderfully they built a nice commodious house and as a fairy tale would say thev lived happily ever afterward Now that Kansas has distinguished herself by sending so great a number of volunteers to the Philippines there is a still greater number of women who are running the farms of the state and statistics those truthful un getaroundable statements prove that llast year was the most prosperous and successful year that farmers have had In Kansas for a long time Oh a woman can do anythin if she tries If she tries hard enough tttWhat Breckenridge county woman Is going to carry off that prize for the best kept lawn this summer ttt-I believe if I have a hobby it is the farmers garden What are you doing in yours Are your pease planted If not go at once to work and get them in get them in nicely too putting all the guano your poultry yards will afford right over them Do you know that for a Mayday dinner pease on toast broiled chick en cream gravy and a deajert of straw berries and whipped cream cant be beaten We farmers can have it all just as a reward of labor without costing a cent Lets do it And lets ask out some city friends to en joy it with us poor things I do feel so sorry for city peoplettt Do not sell all the duck and goose feathers j keep enough to have a generous supply of sofa cushions for your sit ting room You can use cheap plaid ginghams for covers and they will be a source ol comfort to tired harvest men and busy workers when resting at noon or sunset I We will never neglect any even very little thing to make our farm homes attractive and comfortable for we are resolved on ushering in a new era when all the children will think them the loveliest most desirable places in this world and never wish to leave them for other living They are that and we must convince them of 1U tttHave you made all your plans for th a 22nd celebration If not furbish up your wits and get them in order for the farms must not pass unnoticed the birth day of the grandest farmer America eyer produced Arent you proud that George Washington was a farmerT- t t t The lambs are coming now something of unceasing interest to the children who can be taught to care for them quite well thus giving them an excellent lesson in farming In a large flock there will be many a little fellow who will have a battle for his life remember that nothing helps young life like heat both without and within H the good man of the house brings in a tiny roll of wool and says This one is pretty feeble mother youll have to tend to him wrap him In a warm blanket and lay behind the kitchen stove Notice him fret quently and If lie dose pot respond rT rr17IJ 1If ffi jf= kc promptly to the blanket treatment give him a hot toddy remember this dosesf better for the woolly lambs of the out side flock than for the smoOthskinned bright eyed ones of the household This will usually strengthen him and a little milk given by means of finger or nipple and bottle will get him ready to return to the field motherttt I Do you know that through February and March there is more scknesa on the farms than during any months in the year That is the case and the prevention is to see that the feet are kept dry tttThere should be in every farm yard now several broods of young uhlckinv if you havent them see to it that the fail ure is remedied as soon ee possible Get the Incubator to work it is tin early chick that catches the dollar It is per fectly farcical for any one to sayand they does not know how to sell what he has and for which there is a demand j he Is asleep ttt- I have groat faith that Belgian hares are coming to the front and will find a good market the rearing of them will be an ideal occupation for farm children It will give them happiness teach them business methods and mak them a lit tie money all at the tame time j let them try It They will like it better than M BLACK LANQSHANQSI A Prize Article Seven Contestants Spirited Contest was o A rOQTE IN ARMIXS HOME JOURNAL The Black Langshans were admitted to the American Stand of Perfection in 1883 They are of the Asiatic elate and the smallest of this breed of fowls the Black Lansh nfl are noted for ex treme hardiness rapid growth early maturity and docility they bear con fiuement well and when allowed unlim ited pange are with the possible excep tion of the Game the best fonigers of the feathered trlbes very commenda ble characteristic In any breed of fowls as they will pick up their living about the farm As layers these birds rank among the best averaging 12 or 13 dozen eggs par annum They are not only very active but are remarkably Indus trloup and when given free range can take care of their brood almost without any assistance They lay the majority of their eggs duringthe fall andwinter season thus bringing up the balance side of the ledger while some other breeds are taking their annual vacation As I intimated above they are excellent fora gers and being good sitters and kindly disposed when leading a brood makes them an ideal fowl for the farm They are like their cousinsthe Cochins and the Brahmas have plenty of feathers on their feet and leg which makes them peculiarly adapted to this climate for they are comfortable when their bare foot rivals are standing around with frozen feet- Another feature that adds very much to the popularity the Black Lan hane is their color as they are not easily sighted by hawks and when attacked on the range while leading a brood they will defend their brood to the last ex tremity Disease rarely over attacks these fowls andon account of their color they are admirably adapted to the city lot as their plumage does not show dirt They are not only great layers of rich brown eggs which are no much desired by the consumers but their table qualities are superior to many as their flesh is white and finegrained very juicy and well flavored There are two varieties of Langhani the Black and the White but the Black la the most popular in fact no breed of fowls except the Barred Ply month flocks have forged to the front under more disadvantages and holds as high a place in the esteem of the farmer as well as the fancier and has won their popularity with more remarkable rapid ity than the Black Langsbans It has won this popularity on its merits and on account of its many excellent qualities it may retain the high position it has wonIf I were asked to suggest a breed of fowls to be kept on the farm and have free range and be required to pick up their living about the barnyard to roost in trees and protect themselves against owls hawks foxes and all goers and comers I would suggest the Black Langshaii After referring with pride to some of the many excellent quantities of the Black Langflhan we now come to the last point of excellence which is beauty and it can be truthfully said there was never a more beautiful fowl admitted to the standard Behold the purebred Black Langshan cock as he stands in all his magnificence and grandeurI His plumallelsthemarvelofblsbeautybe ing a rich black glossy color showing a beautiful green sheen which stamps him with the indelible marks of royalty for It is not duplicated by any other breed of fowls and Is found only in the pure bred Lantphan His proud carriage and stately bearing presents the appearance of a military commander and he steps around with an air that seems to say I am monarch of all I survey The standard weight of the cock is 10 pounds hen seven pounds cockerel eight pounds pullet six pounds ORIAN VALE A L Bsndy and sister Miss Ada will enter college at Irvington next week Miss Eva Schindler and brother Ben were the guests of Mlsa
