tops or the frosts bite to make the harvest ripe I heard an expert bee culturist say that bee moths were a blessing to the intelligent beekeeper and not an evil because these moths would make the beekeeper keep his hives filled with bees so that there would be no room or place for the moth I know the man who said that told the truth And so it is if you hayo a hill of corn or potatoes growing a followed In the first plate the toll should bb as clean as possible and fall plowed unless the soil is so light that winter washing is feared If a clovercrop can be turned under in the fall the organic matter will bb sufficiently rotted for good tobacco the following year and the nitrogen ac cumulated by the clover will ho used to good advantage Tobacco manures have a marked influ ence on the quality of the crop Nitrate of soda is a good form of nitrogen arid acid phosphate is a satisfactory form of phosphate For potash those forms whichcontain no chloride should be used such es sulphate double sulphate of potash magnesia or double carbonate of potash magnesia It seems settled that chlorides injure burning qualities but if the potash is applied the previous fall there Is no dangerof injury from this cause All the fertilizers except the ni trate may be applied the previous fall without danger of loss unless the soil is very light in which case the fertlltzsr must be applied veryearlyin the spring The proportions of nitrogen potash and phosphoric acid in a tobacco fertili zer is subject to some controversy It would seem that a safe plan would be to follow the proportions shown by the nat ura selection of the plant itself that is its chemical analysis While this may not be an Ideal fertilizer it certainly shows what the plant must have to make a good growth A crop of 1COO pounds of leaves and 1300 pounds stems con tame Nitrogen 89 Ibs potash 103 pounds phosphoric acid 23 pounds This fertilizer is contained in 550 pounds of nitrate of soda 210 pounds of sulphate of potash and 200 pounds of 12 per cent acid phosphate A large proportion of the nitrogen may be obtained through the use of crimson clover or even cowpeas but the potash and phos phate must be applied to every crop All fertilizer for tobacco must have a high degree of availability as the plant has little power of foraging through the soil for food Its roots are thick and fleshy and there is a lack of fine fibrous feeding roots so common in grain crops While it is very Important to have an ample supply of fertilizer it must be well balanced A great excess of nitrogen will cause a too rank growth making a thick leaf unsuitable for smoking or cigar tobacco Similarly a great excess of phosphoric aCd will force an early maturity causing woodiness of leaf as well as a diminished crop Limestone soils should have the potash applied in the form of double carbonate of potash magnesia as it is claimed that bad burning qualities are caused by limo salts in the leaf A crop of cowpeas heavily manured with fertilizer material is a good advance crop but it must be turned under early in the fall and crossplowed early in the spring By this method any form of potash fait may be used
