last Sunday to learn the exact status of the matter and they re port the above facts Before leaving the neighborhood they endeavored to estab lish a quarantine against those who had had an opportunity to take the disease They left very strict orders in regard to people going about in the neighbor hood They instructed the Magistrate and the Constable both to see that their orders were obeyed Everything will be done the doctors say to prevent the dls ease from spreading Owing to so many persons bring exposed to it before they discovered that it was really smallpox they are apprehensive interesting and profitable if farmers would follow up these meetings with plain and correctre porta of their farm operations or of some special line say as regards cattle sheep hogs poultry wheat or corn In a word if you have anything that Is worth tell ing and you know that you have been particular as regards data or the minute details without any guise work then re port it But if you have to guess at part of it and stretch the thing in order to outdo some one else then do remain quiet Wu want the fact and often times our neighbors failures or our own mistakes are a valua le object leeson to ur But I started out to report the actual performance tf my little dairy herd Now I know full well that the dairy in no way interests ninetynine out of a hundred Kentuckians but it is my sheet anchor and mainsail If I sail at all t want to take the advantage of this hard spell of weather to make my test lest some one should say that I made my teSt when things were in the most favorable condition possible and consequently declare it not a fair test I was about to forget the most Important thing which is this I make no claim to having the best cows in the country I do not claim that this tct Is at all extraordinary for half the people who read this report will say that hie cow can beat it MY consolation is in remembering the language of David of old All men are liars My little herd of workers numbers lit teen nine are aged cows while siare only twoyearold heifers These cows have been fresh or giving milk from two to flye months at the time of the test Four of these COJTB rarry Holstein or Shorthorn or scrub stock while the eleven remaining are of the Jersey stock and sired by a grandson of Imported Tor mentorNo preparation whatever was given the cows before this test in fact the ttst was not thought of until the day it was begun But the morning of December 31 1801 when the mercury was within six de rees of zero by the government thermometer 1 decided to weigh the milk morning and night and see how much mlik the fifteen COHB would give and then churn it separately and sue how much butter it would make after it ws salted arid uorkeil ready for market Then we concluded to make it a two days test and selected the next day which was January 1 woo The mercury was still hi ten degrees of zero aud of courtu some chrinkage InImilk was unlnoillabllIThe total yield of milk of fifteen cows for the two days was XXJ pounds which is 72 gallonr Tills GOO pounds of milk made exactly SO pounds oi worked but ter which is ono pound of butter forII every two gallons of milk or six pounds of butter per 100 pounds of milk or Ij pounds of butter per cow per day I conII sider this doing fairly well considering the weather at the time of test together I with no preparation of the herd and thllI fact that six of the herd are twoyeaiold I heifers This butter was sold at 22 cents net which would credit each cow with 1 29 cenls per day for butter The daily ration for each cow is shown below with cost of same which is less than lij cents per day per cow valuing ensilage at 2 I per ton clover hay 8 per ton bran 14 and cottonseed meal at 25 per ton The above ration conforms nearly enough to the American standard In ey J erything except carbohydrates It Is a little too low in carbohydrates were it not that the cows eat some straw which would help out that deficiency KCATTEUINU C01U1EJlTI I Dont forget that it pays to teed a van ety of feeds and to balance up the rationll yes even to the hens Dont you see from the protein and fat content that 1 cottonseed meal at 125 per ton is cheaper than bran at 15 per ton Dont you also know that if timothy bay was substituted J for the clover hay and four pounds of I corn put in the place of the two pounds J of cottonseed meal that the ration woulde cost more money and the yield of butter would be 20 per cent less Men who are feeding steers would do well to rotflect and reflect seriously over this t Many men in comparing the dairy to the handling of steers make the dairy work a great big thing True it takes a big lot of work but I never count the work anything simply because the skim r milk and buttermilk that you have to d fed to hogs and calves pays for the work in fuL I know that when I put 121 cents worth of feed into a good daily cow and get even 23 cents for the butter I have a profit and if any man can take a bunch of steers and do it ho is also in the swim but I am top stupid to see how he can doltI will also state that my fifteen cows now make as much butter as twenty cows made two years ago on about the same feed I am simply breeding better cows specialpnrpoee cowsthe little Channel Island or Jersey cow that went to the big fair in 1893 and once more demonstrated contain- a more enthusiastic body of teachers as whole than Breckenridge and Meade Why not give these teachers more graded schools in which to labor A teacher can accomplish more in an eight months term where the school is ell graded than he can in three terms of five months each It Is encouraging to see the school question agitated through the columns of county papers Enthusiastic educators can do good in the advancement of education by contributing to their coun ty paper This kind of educational gltatlon from teachers farmers legisla tors and general business men will bring Kentucky up to cUlled at McQuady in years was the wolf chase Monday which was conducted ty Mr J W Pato People from all over tbat section Lad gathered toseu the sport The crowd was estimated att five hun dred people The wolf was a real live animal from Colorado about the szi of a dOll the property of Mr John Taul and though weakened from his long confinement had plenty of fight in him When given his liberty the wolf ran a mile and a half pursued by about seven ty five hounds and took refuge in a pond where he held the dogs at bay Mr Taul waded in and brought him out and he was taken back to his pen In which a bulldog was fastened with him The wolf nothing daunted stood in one corner and by his actions dared tho dog to attack him lie was given the oppor tunity to fight another dog in which contest he again came out victorious When he was the second time allowed to go free he took refuge under an old house where he remained for quite a while The fhor was taken up but no one would dare to touch the infuriated beast until Mr Taul was brays enough to do so and he was safely fastened in his pen again and the fun was over for the day The editor of this paper was fortunate enough to be one of the witnesses of this unusual sport and he with many others erjjytd the occasion There were old men women and children present One old man more than seventy years old was one of the most active horsemen
