8tb 1000 Jacksons Day I What a glorious day for Democrats to consider whither we are drifting I What a day for Democratic comparison I What a day for Democrats to consider I On that day that grand old American Democratic Statesman and hero drove the British from American son Then there was no one to kick against expansion but a few old Feder i ali in the extreme Yankee States Then the grand old Democratic party had no antiexpansionists no anti im perialisti no antiAmerican flag furling crawfishing calamity howling chronic disturbers of Democratic harmony But all were patriotic countryloving no lawful remedy but know that they have always existed since old lather Noah and his three sons organized a trust and formed a combine to corner the livestock market As to the tariff and currency question I can find plEnty of men in a mile of Big Spring who can arrange them so that the rich will all become poor and the poor become rich 4 As to the Matchless if any one will F show me one single prediction that he made in the event of McKinleys elec 1 tion that has come true then I will pull la my horns and shut my mouth He predicted all sorts of financial calamities the laboring classes to be reduced to serfdom starvation prices would obtain all farm products would fall below living prices and general distress would cer rtanly follow Yet the country has ney t bad a wider or more general era of rosperity than it enjoys now As soon as the free silver question was settled gold came from its hiding places all torts of produce advanced in prices money was plentiful and easy to obtain aid everybody was happy except the r chronic calamity howler In fact his pet prediction or declaration was that wheat and slyer were linked together like the Siamese twins that when one went down the other had to follow How iji it bow Wheat has advanced Md diver declined until they areso far1 apart that they are hardly fourth cons tins Just so WIth all of his predictions yet be is the only one mentioned as fie aaadldate for President in our party for w next year And Just BO sure as he is the next candi date he will meet with the most match less defeat that any candidate ever met with brtUe in the upper end ofthe county in the family 6ff Nick Mercer Mr Mer cer lives within five miles ot the Hardln county line near Eveleigha mill All the family arc ill except his wife The disease was contracted from a man who had been In Daviesa county and who had stopped to spend the night with the family The next day the man complained of not feeling well and went to see Dr Givens the local physician Dr Givens told the man he had the small pox Afterwards some ofMr Mer cers family slept in the same bed the man had slept in and all ol them took the disease Dr Glvehs directed the man whose naratt was Pollard to go to a house in the neighborhood to be treated but In stead of obeying the orders of tho physician he stopped at a church neat there I and exposed fifty or more people to the disease Great fears are felt among the people in that neighborhood that there may yet be a great spread of the disease Dre A A Simons of this city and A M Klncheloe ot Hardlneburg visited the locality last Sunday to learn the exact status of the matter and they re port the above facts Before leaving the neighborhood they endeavored to estab lish a quarantine against those who had had an opportunity to take the disease They left very strict orders in regard to people going about in the neighbor hood They instructed the Magistrate and the Constable both to see that their orders were obeyed Everything will be done the doctors say to prevent the dls ease from spreading Owing to so many persons bring exposed to it before they discovered that it was really smallpox they are apprehensive that there may be other cases The Mercer family ii being treated by I Dr Givens Die Simons and Kinche loe will not return there unless it be comes necessary The Mercer family here spoken of are in no WEDNESDAY JANUARY 17 1900 j of r1- tI t BRECKENRIDGE NEWS TESTED HIS COWS IN ZERO WEATHER The Owner of the Lakeland Dairy Farm Proves Ills Principles and Hakes Scattering Comments The farm institutes are now over for this winter and aa It was tie main ob ject to ret or bring out the everydny methods of practical farmus and to hear exactly what the results were it seems to me that it might be interesting and profitable if farmers would follow up these meetings with plain and correctre porta of their farm operations or of some special line say as regards cattle sheep hogs poultry wheat or corn In a word if you have anything that Is worth tell ing and you know that you have been particular as regards data or the minute details without any guise work then re port it But if you have to guess at part of it and stretch the thing in order to outdo some one else then do remain quiet Wu want the fact and often times our neighbors failures or our own mistakes are a valua le object leeson to ur But I started out to report the actual performance tf my little dairy herd Now I know full well that the dairy in no way interests ninetynine out of a hundred Kentuckians but it is my sheet anchor and mainsail If I sail at all t want to take the advantage of this hard spell of weather to make my test lest some one should say that I made my teSt when things were in the most favorable condition possible and consequently declare it not a fair test I was about to forget the most Important thing which is this I make no claim to having the best cows in the country I do not claim that this tct Is at all extraordinary for half the people who read this report will say that hie cow can beat it MY consolation is in remembering the language of David of old All men are liars My little herd of workers numbers lit teen nine are aged cows while siare only twoyearold heifers These cows have been fresh or giving milk from two to flye months at the time of the test Four of these COJTB rarry Holstein or Shorthorn or scrub stock while the eleven remaining are of the Jersey stock and sired by a grandson of Imported Tor mentorNo preparation whatever was given the cows before this test in fact the ttst was not thought of until the day it was begun But the morning of December 31 1801 when the mercury was within six de rees of zero by the government thermometer 1 decided to weigh the milk morning and night and see how much mlik the fifteen COHB would give and then churn it separately and sue how much butter it would make after it ws salted arid uorkeil ready for market Then we concluded to make it a two days test and selected the next day which was January 1 woo The mercury was still hi ten degrees of zero aud of courtu some chrinkage InImilk was unlnoillabllIThe total yield of milk of fifteen cows for the two days was XXJ pounds which is 72 gallonr Tills GOO pounds of milk made exactly SO pounds oi worked but ter which is ono pound of butter forII every two gallons of milk or six pounds of butter per 100 pounds of milk or Ij pounds of butter per cow per day I conII sider this doing fairly well considering the weather at the time of test together I with no preparation of the herd and thllI fact that six of the herd are twoyeaiold I heifers This butter was sold at 22 cents net which would credit each cow with 1 29 cenls per day for butter The daily ration for each cow is shown below with cost of same which is less than lij cents per day per cow valuing ensilage at 2 I per ton clover hay 8 per ton bran 14 and cottonseed meal at 25 per ton The above ration conforms nearly enough to the American standard In ey J erything except carbohydrates It Is a little too low in carbohydrates were it not that the cows eat some straw which would help out that deficiency KCATTEUINU C01U1EJlTI I Dont forget that it pays to teed a van ety of feeds and to balance up the rationll yes even to the hens Dont you see from the protein and fat content that 1 cottonseed meal at 125 per ton is cheaper than bran at 15 per ton Dont you also know that if timothy bay was substituted J for the clover hay and four pounds of I corn put in the place of the two pounds J of cottonseed meal that the ration woulde cost more money and the yield of butter would be 20 per cent less Men who are feeding steers would do well to rotflect and reflect seriously over this t Many men in comparing the dairy to the handling of steers make the dairy work a great big thing True it takes a big lot of work but I never count the work anything simply because the skim r milk and buttermilk that you have to d fed to hogs and calves pays for the work in fuL I know that when I put 121 cents worth of feed into a good daily cow and get even 23 cents for the butter I have a profit and if any man can take a bunch of steers and do it ho is also in the swim but I am top stupid to see how he can doltI will also state that my fifteen cows now make as much butter as twenty cows made two years ago on about the same feed I am simply breeding better cows specialpnrpoee cowsthe little Channel Island or Jersey cow that went to the big fair in 1893 and once more demonstrated concerning this great state may prove Interesting to some at least Colorado is a wonderfully rich state in natural resources Mining and stock raising are the leading occupations here though more and more attention is being given to agriculture and man ufacturingWe all of the principal nationali ties of the world represented here Eng lish capitalists hays many millions of dollars invested in Colorado mines and stock The intense interest shown in the mining exchanges of some cf the cities in this State especially Denver reminds one ofthe Chicago Board ot Trade scenes Many Easterners drop their thousands there for lack of expert ience yearly every kind of known mineral iexists in Colorado Some of the finest apples peaches strawberries and canta loupes grown in the United States are pro duced in the Arkansas valley In eastern Colorado There land sells for from S50 to 300 per acre but the income is great Farmers do well on from 5 to 20 acres of land All tillers of the soil here ate called ranchmen Agriculture is profitable only where jirrigation is practicable There is much jhere to encourage ambitious farmers Grazing land may be had for 1 to 2 per acreIt is no uncommon sight to see from 2000 to 5000 sheep in a single honk in Colorado or New Mexico One cattle company in this city hIS 25000 head of cattle The grout pack- Ing companies of eastern cities have mil lions of cattle in this whole Ilocky moun tamregion I could write at length along this line but do not wish to tire youAu to education Colorado is one of the foremost western states and leads many eastern states All schools run nine and ten mouths I hear no complaint concerning school tax No town or toni munity can do a better public act than to establish a good graded school This is public school age and it is clear that Kentucky is getting more interested in the graded school system May the good work go on and may Kentucky rapidly come to the front in educational matters No two counties in Kentucky contain- a more enthusiastic body of teachers as whole than Breckenridge and Meade Why not give these teachers more graded schools in which to labor A teacher can accomplish more in an eight months term where the school is ell graded than he can in three terms of five months each It Is encouraging to see the school question agitated through the columns of county papers Enthusiastic educators can do good in the advancement of education by contributing to their coun ty paper This kind of educational gltatlon from teachers farmers legisla tors and general business men will bring Kentucky up to the standard which she o justly deserves In most respects there are no better people on the globe than the KentuckIans Out here Kentuckians are looked upon s a drinking people this I always re fute It is commendable that the non movement is strengthening there Here I meet people from every state in the union and it is the opinion of alltbat Kentucky politics are very corrupt Be that as it may the last state election there will surely prove instrumental in oing good in the future Mr Editor I find that I must close lest I take too much space Shall tell ou something of the climate and moun tain His plea for home rule for the cities of the State is admirable Surely each city should be allowed to determine and decide about its local taxation The recom mendations are all good and the only re conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment Burke lies said that the perfection of conversation is not to play a regular sonato but like the Aeolian harp to await the inspiration of a passing breeze We all know that prepared speeches in ordinary conversation are rarely apropos and that their preparedness sounds n forced note Some people completely monopolize the conversation I believe Edison has a patent on a talking machine A good listener frequently gets the credit of being a fine converse tionalist Napoleon Washington Grant Lee and Stonewall Jackson talked little but listened well Queen Victoria has little to say Mrs Cleveland is retltoat but is considered very affable in conver sation for she listens attentively Along time ago one wise man eald to ano ther Give thy thoughts no tongue It is well enough to heed this sag tad vice often and St Paul has warned us no little about the tongue Still a pleasant fluent wellinformed person in coave ration is a joy forever The art of enter taining is rare and iit does not lie in brilliant repartee nor is learned die sertations but in talking to the point and on a general subject or topic of mutual interest In ones circle of friends one has to learn to discriminate To one we might discuss politics while to another it would be a bore We would discuss lit erature to one dress and fashion to another religion science and art to others It seems to me that the selec tion of a congenial theme is the most im portent point and then not to become tiresome Not a hundred years ago I was on nettles on account of a friend who kept saying the wrong thing at the tempting moment The person we were entertaining was entirely practical and knew a thing State Teachers Association which met in Lousville during the holidays K brought together in that profession some of the brightest minds in the State a matters in learning masters in the schoolroom and lovers of that which seeks to elevate and inspire the best i thought within us Looking over the list of delegates we h saw that western Kentucky had a fairly good representation Meade Brecsen a ridge Ohio Grsyson and many of the counties surrounding us were represented by men well up in the art of teaching This speaks well for our section and in a healthy sentiment on the sub Ifdltateseducation i Already in the counties above named t there are collegia of a firstclass order It is true that they are email as con I pared with some others but they are f coming into notice The teachers in i charge of them are branching out and I trying to do something to make the in etltutlons permanent At Ilardlnsburg we have the Brecken 1 ridge Normal which has been running about ten years and it seems to be a succees In Ohio county they have a fine school also The professors at the head of these schools cannot be expected to do it all however They must have the assist ance and cooperation of the people at home if the schools become a suttees II is a mistaken idea that the boy or girl must be sent away from home to get a finished education Let him patronize t his home college and the chances are that he will fare about as well More time is given him by the teachers and it is to their interest to see to it that he gets what ho pays for Sending the boy from home makes a larger ex pense an important matter to be consid i iered Then we need to build up good institutions of learning at home There is nothing which adds more to the culti vation and refinement of our rising generation war CANTl wEt ONE of the most unique specimens of newspaper work that has ever come into i this office is a copy of the Brownntown I Banner published at Brownstown Jack son county Indiana It is a trade edl f tion and is printed on brown paper the first finished product of the Brownstown Strawboard and Taper Factory a recently I established industry which stands as a monument to the business enterprise of i the men of Brownstown and farmers of central and western Jackson county This lucrative addition to Brownstown a village of 2600 people is due to the enthusiasm and hustle of one man a railroadofficial and the history of his efforts and final success make a readable column in the Banner Another inter eating contributor to this issue is the Rev S 0 Bates a former citizen of this place who writes a history of the past yeaYs progress in Brownstown Does all this improvement and prog ress make us envious Not at all But it does inspire us to ask the question of Oloverport and of Breckenridge county Why cant we We have equally as good facilities as other places we have ability to carry out schemes of any magnitude and it is no secret that we need the profits that would accrue from just such anenterprisePut thinking cap and solvp the problem Why cant we OUR NEW COLUMN Our new column devoted to the interests and doings of the farm women of Breckenridge county is edited by Sirs Lucy Cleaver McElroy of Leba non Ky Mrs McElroy is a bright cut tivated woman and her advice and suggestions F are founded on a large experi ence in practical farming l tt Heretofoe the farmers the male jl4 members of the family hays received r the lion share of our attention but it has j been borne in upon us that the wives mothers and daughters the ones who raise the chickens make the butter cook the meals and in every way keep the machlPery of the farming household In running order deserve more space and encouragement If the farmer is the backbone of the country the farm woman is the heart and soul of it and as such she deserves the highest praise and commendationIt with the aid of Mrs McElroys facile pen to print from time to time such ideas and suggestions that will be helpful to this claw of our readers and that will enable them to e i I more fully attain their juet goalthat cf being veritable queens in their homes and mistresses of all tney survey Tux printed proceedings of the thirti eth annual meeting of the Kentucky Press Association held at Henderson Ky July 1112 1899 are at band and we would congratulate the committee In charge of this matter on the very attrac tive style in which they are gotten up We heartily indorse the closing sentences of the article Should the Coun try Weekly Be NonPartisan by Louis Landram of the Lancaster Record which is one of the able articles published in the minute book Mr Landram saye I believe the columns of the weekly paper should be filled with tho comings and goings of the neighbors and friends in fact should be a cozy corner in which we can find in detail what our home people are doing in a social and business way I believe that the editorial column should be taken up with articles for the general welfare and progress of our home people When we do this conscienti ously and fill our columns with all the news of our count however trivial it may sound to strangers I believe the result will be a large circle of interested home readers ONE of the most interesting features cfi the beginnings every new year is the exchange of calendars Some of these ate beautiful and artistic in design and display pictures that do not grow old during the entire year Two of the most appreciated that have come into thli office this 1900 are the one from J M Robinson Norton Co manufacturers importers and jobbers and the one from J E Dorland of the American Book Co Louisville Ky Both of these are preserved and enjoyed by us WIIY is 1900 not a leap year This is a question that has been discussed and discussed again and yet is of quick solu tion The rule for leap years as devised by Pope Gregory XIII when he revised the Julian calendar is simple and easy to remember Any year the number of which is divisible by four is a leap year excepting the last year of a century which is a leap year only when the num ber of the century is divisible by four TISSUE ballots in Breckenridge county 1 The idea is so ridiculous it amuses usI No better ballot was ever printed and no fairer election was ever held than in Bieckenridge county Democrats Republican Populists all will testify to this We grow pretty hot in politics and fight each other to the bitter end but the side that wins gets it and no kick comes Breckenridge has a law abiding selfrespecting citizenship WE are inclined to congratulate our selves on the superior quality of our reading matter Both our regular and irregular correspondents are good writers and have something of interest to say We have in reserve for next week an article on Corn Growing by John L lIen ry one of the most successful corn grower of Irvington that will interest and instruct those in that branch of business Tug TRIAL of the contest for Governor and Lieutenant Governor began yester day at Frankfort in the presence of sev eral hundred spectators Much time was consumed In examining and cross examining witnesses It was a lively day of legal sparring before the legisla tive committees and many petition counter notices affidavits and charges were filed THE Committee appointed by the Leg islature to hear Mr Goebels contest for the Governors place has gotten to work at Frankfort Nine Democrats one Popu list and one Republican compose the committee Several hundred witnesses have been summoned before the Com mittee and each party has five days in which to hear testimony DONT fail to read every chapter in the aerial The Crucifixion of Philip Strong begun in last weeks issue of this paper This book created a stir when it first ap peared from the pen of that conscientious western writer Chas M Sheldon that has only been equalled by the subsequent story In His Steps by the same author Dn P W FOOTE has given the NEWS readers in this issue the result of an Interesting experiment made at his home near Irvington The doctor is a scienti fic up to date farmer and one of the cleverest gentleman in Breckenridge county ONE million three hundred and ninety four thousand bushels of coal left Pitts burg a few days ago for points on the lower Ohio This it is hoped will in some measure help to relieve the great demand for coal which has existed at many points for some weeks PKKCY BEAnn is an accomplished ad writer Ills production in last weeks paper and also the one in this la worthy of attention Percy strikes the nail on the head He is clear concise and in teresting as well AND there stood John Haawell IB solid aa A stone waU pointing to that box All Breckenridge county knowa it was packed if he said so For shame on Ed Leigh to be guilty of BO dirty a trick r IIWE underatand that railroads have Mised their freight rates We also un derstand that Iron trosatles lumber labor and many other things that enter into the making and running of the rail road have increased in price The kickers never look at bat one side of the question JUDGE cancan treated the good women cf Cloverport so nicely and courteously during their visit to Hardinsburg last Monday that they all came homo sing- Ing his praise and saying many nice things about him IT is believed at Frankfort that Joe Blackburn will come out against Goe bets contest for Govrnor as soon as he is elected to the Senate V J BBYAN is In Frankfort tc day and soon the public will learn directly from him what he thinks of the Goebel contest SUCULD Christ come to Frankfort what would he do SAND CAVE FLAT Nice weather for January Killing hogs at Foster McKaughans Mr B Lay attended tho sale of the property of Lee Vandewift deceased Mr Ed Haynes has moved to Poplar Flat to crop with Mr Al Whltwortb Mrs W T Claycombs daughters Luella and Mrs Henry Cline were the guests of Mr and Mrs A Olaycomb and Mr and Mrs F McKaughan a day and night last week Mrs Dr Shively of Stcphensport met with a very painful accident at this place Monday January 8th She was thrown from a horse and her right arm fractured at the elbow Dr Will Milner was called immediately and her arm was at tended to within a few hours after the accident occurred She is an Owensboro lady and it was her first visit to this olace We sympathlza with her and the Doctor and regret the accident very much We hope she may soon recover and be able to visit us again There seems to be a diversity of opin ions about when the twentieth century begins All agree that it takes one hundred years to make a century and that 99 years lacks one year of being that number Time is counted by chronol ogy instead of mathematics and there ia no zero period of time in the Christian era The first year was numbered 1 at the beginning not because one year had passed but because it was the period of the first year The days and months and oven the centuries are numbered the same way Wo do not wait until the last of the day the last of the month nor the last of the year to date the period of time but date from tho beginning and as it takes 100 years for a century just as it takes GO minutes to make an hour and it takes the last second of the last minute to complete that hour Just so itjtnkis the last moment of time in this year to complete this nineteenth century We should study up on chro nology and teach it to the children and by the time the nineteenth century closes all may eee eye to eye and the watchman on the wall speak the same tiling Mr A M Matheny an old and respected citizen of Breckenridge county passed away January Oth at the home of his soninlaw W T Claycomb His Both anniversary occurred during his last Illness Ho came to the grave in a full age and seemed perfectly re signed to tho will of God and even anxious to depart Ills estimable com panion preceded him by only a few years although he was ten years her senior He leaves seven children and quite a number of grandchildren to mourn his loss Tho funeral service was conducted on Sunday evening at tho home where he died by Rev Stubble field and his remains were brought to Stephensport on Monday January 8th and interred in the cemetery near the churches The family have our smear est sympathy in the loss of both father and mother and to the memory of both we ascribe the following lines Allcep In JcaUII1 Blessed sleep From which none ever wake Imagine what It costs mo to come to you about this matter In one senso it may seoul to you like an Impertinent meddling In your business In another sense It Is only what I ought to do as pastor of a church which Is dearer to me than my life And I have come to you as a brother In Christ to ask you It it seems to you like a thing which Christ wo 1 approve that you his disciple hi uld allow the1 property which Los utno Into your hands that you may use It for his glory and the building up of his kingdom to be used by the agents of the devil while you reap the financial bbuoflt Is It right my brother The man to whom the question was put made the usual excuses that It he did not rent to these people other men would that there was no call for the property by other parties and If It were not nntvtl to objectionable people It would lie empty at a dead logs and so forth To nil of which 1hlllp opposed the plain will of God that all a man Las should be used In clean and honest ways and he could never sanction the getting of money through such Im moral channels The man was Dually Induced to acknowledge that It was not Just the right timing to do and especial ly for a church member Hut when Philip presed him to give up the whole Iniquitous revenue and clear himself of all connection with It the property owner looked aghast Why Mr Strong do you know what you ask Twothirds of the most regular hart of iny Income iIs derived from these rents It Is out of the question for me to give them up You are too nice In the matter AH the prop erty owners In Milton do time same thing There Isnt a man of any means In the church who Isnt deriving some revenue from this source Why a large part of your salary Is paid from these very rents You will get Into trouble If you try to meddle In this matter I dont take offense I think you have done your duty And I confess It doesnt seem exactly the thing Hut as society Is organized I dont see that we can change the matter liettcr not try to do anything about It Mr Strong Time church likes you and will stand b- In giving you n handsome support but men are very touchy when their pri Tote business Is meddled with Philip snt listening to this spcechI and his face grew whiter and he clinched his hands tighter as the man went on When he hind finished Philip spoke In a low voice Mr Bentley you do not know me If you think any fear of the conse quences will prevent my speaking to the members of my church on any mat ter where It seems to me I ought to speak In this particular matter 1 be Hove It Is not only my right but my duty to speak I would be shamed before my LorI and Master If I did not declare his will In regard to the uses of property This question passes over from one of private business with which I have no right to meddle Into tho domain of public safety whore 1 have n right to demand that places which are futnl to time life and morals of the young men and women of the town shall not be encouraged and al lowed to subsist through the use of property owned and controlled by men of Influence In the community and es pecially by the members of Christs body My brother Philip went on after a painful pause before God In whose presence we shall stand at last am I not right In my view of this mat ter Would not Christ say to you Just what I mil now saying Mr IJcntley shrugged his shoulders and said something about not trying to mix up business and religion Philip sat looking at the man reading him through and through his heart almost bursting In him at the thought of what a man would do for the sake of money At last ho saw that he would gain nothing by prolonging the argument He rose and with the same sweet frankness which characterized his opening of the subject lie said Broth er I wish to tell you that It Is my In tention to speak of this matter next Sunday in tho first of my talks ou Christ and Modern Society I be hove It Is something he would tall about In public and I will speak of It as I think he would You must do your duty of course Mr Strong replied Mr IJeutley some what coldly and Philip went out tech lag as If he hind grappled with his first dragon In Milton and found him to be a very ugly one and hard to kill What hurt him as munch as the lack of spir- Itual lIiuiiiSH of apprehension of evil In Ills church member was time knowledge I that as Mr Itcntley so coarsely put It his salary was largely paid out of the rentals of those vile abodes lie grew sick at heart as he dwelt upon the disagreeable fact and as ho came back to the parsonage and went up to Ills cozy study ho groaned to think that It was possible through the price that men paid for souls And this because society Is na It Is bo exclaimed as he burled his taco tn his hands and leaned his elbows on his desk while his checks Hushed and his heart quivered at the thought of tho filth and vileness the money had soon and heard which paid for the very I desk at which ho wrote his scrmonsIBut Philip Strong was not one to plye jyaiatUmflrat tccllng of seem i ing acfcaC Ho ttUFuoCTft TJafshl condemn his members no wondered at their lack of spiritual life but to his credit be It said ho did not harshly condemn Only ns Sunday approached he grew more clear In his own mind as to his duty In the matter Expe dlcncy whispered to him Better walt You have only Just come here Tile people like you now It will only cause unpleasant feelings and do no good for you to launch out Into a cru sade against this thing right now There are so many of your members Involved that It will certainly alienate their support and possibly lead to your being compelled to lose your place ns pastor If It do not drive away the most influential members To all this plea of expediency Philip replied Get thee behind me satan lie said with himself he might as well let the people know what he was at the very first I P was not neces sary that he should be their pastor If they would none of him It was necessary that he preach the truth boldly The one question he asked himself was Would Jesus Christ If he were pastor of Calvary church In Milton today speak of the matter next Sunday and speak regardless of all conse quences Philip asked time question honestly and after long prayer and much communion with time Divine ho said Yes I believe he would It Is possible that he might have gained by waiting or by working with his memO hers In private Another man might havo pursued that method and still Slave Icon d couragmurf true minister lint this Is the story of Philip Strong nut of another tuna and this Is what hi did When Sunday morning came he went Into his pulpit with the oUt thought in mind that he would simply and frankly In his presentation of the subject use the language and the spir it of his Master He had seen other property owners during the week and his Interviews wero nearly nil similar to time one with Mr Bentley lIe had not been able to see Mr William Winter time chairman of tIme trustees as he hind not returned homo until very late Saturday night Philip saw him come Into time church that morning Just no the choir rose to sing time anthem He was n large tine looking man Philip admired his physical appearance ns he marched down the aisle to his pew which was time third from the front di rectly before the pulpit When tho hymn had been sung the offering taken the prayer made Philip stepped out at one bide of time pulpit and reminded the congregation that according to his announcement of n week before lie would give time first of his series of monthly talks on Christ awl Modern Society Ills subject this morning he said was Tho Right and Wrong Uses of Property He starred out with tIme statement which he claimed was verified everywhere In the word of God that all property that men acquire Is really only In the nature of trust funds which tho property holder Is In duty bound to use as n steward Time gold Is Gods Time silver Is Gods Tho cat tie on a thousand hills all land anti water privileges and wealth of tho earth and of time seas belong primarily to the Lord of all time earth When any of this property comes within the con trol of a man ho Is not at liberty to use It as If It were his own and his alone but as God would havo him use It to better tho condition of life and make men and communities happier and more useful From this statement Philip went on to speak of time common Idea which men had that wealth and houses and lands were their own to do with as they pleased and he showed what misery and trouble had always flowed out of the great falsehood and how nations and Individuals were today In time greatest distress because of the wroug uses to which Gods property was put by men who hind control of It It was easy then to narrow the argu meat to time condition of affairs In Milton As ho stepped from the goner al to the particular and began to speak of tho rental of saloons and houses of gambling from property owners In Milton and then characterized such a use of Gods property as wrong and unChrlstlan It was curious to note the effect on the congregation Men who bad been listening complacently to Philips eloquent but quiet statements ns long ns ho confined himself to dis taut historical facts suddenly became aware that the tall pale faced resolute anti loving young preacher up there was talking right at them and more than one mill owner merchant real estate denier and even professional man writhed Inwardly and nerv ously shifted In his cushioned pew as Philip spoke In tho plainest terms of tIme terrible example set time world by the use of property for purposes which were destructive to all true society and a shame to civiliza tion and Christianity Philip con trolled lila voice and his manner admirably but ho drove tho truth homo and spared not His voice at no time rosu above a quiet conversational tone but It was clear and distinct Tho audience sat hushed In the spell of a geulno sensation which deepened when at the close of a tremendous sentence which swept through the church like a red hot flame Mr Winter suddenly arose a1AUWuta tha aJa1a bf H lto 0 F C anti mlirc1icd dellberately rfbwn and out of the door Philip MW bin and know the reason but marched straight on with his message and no one not oven his anxious wife who endured martyrdom for him that morning could detect any disturbance In Philip from tho mill owners contemptuous withdrawalWhen closed with a prayer of tender appeal that the spirit of truth would make all hearts to behold the truth as one soul the audience remain ed seated longer than usual still under tho Influence of tho subject and the mornings sensational service All through the day Philip felt a certain strain on him which did not subside oven when the evening service was over Some of time members notably severalI of tim mothers thanked him with tears In their eyes for the morn- Ing message Very few of tho men talked with him Mr Winter did not come out to the evening service al though ho was one of the very few men members who were Invariably present Philip noted his absence but preached with his usual enthusiasm lie thought a larger number of stran gers was present than he had seen the Sunday betore He was very tired when tho day was over Time next morning ns ho was getting ready to go out for a visit to one of the mills tho bell rang lIe was near the door and opened It There stood Mr Winter I would like to see you for a few moments Mr Strong if you can spare the time said the mill owner without offering to take the hand Phil ip extended Certainly Will you come up to my study asked Philip quietly The two men went up stairs and Philip shut the door as he motioned Mr Winter to a scat and then sat down opposite CHAPTER 111- II Into my house to accuse mo unjustly of wronging you I am willing to talk the matter over In a friendly spirit but 1 will not listen to personal abuse There was something In tho tono and manner of this declaration that sub dued the mill owner a little He was an older man than Philip by 20 years but a man ot quick and ungoverned temper He had come tasco the min- Ister while In a heat of passion and New Inspiration For Farm r i f Women l I OtCEbS TO THOSE WHO DARE1 By Mrs Lucy Cleaver McElroy Lotus not forget that midwinter la the time for greatest vigilance on the farm stock rand land that come beet through r the rigorous experiences of cold and storm and bad weather generally are surest of profit when harvest tine arrive In this connection It is well to remember that every meat scrap that linda ita way to the poultry yard now is worth its weight in gold that water Is as necessary in winter as in summer though used in smaller quantities and that cleanliness in the poultry houses In winter makes lighter work all the fol lowing spring and summer aThe law of the land should be as bind- Ing on the farmer folks as on any others and to ha credit be it said he observes it with unusual punctiliousness but bo is prone to forget that eight hours and not sixteen make a legal day eight hours of labor well performed Is enough for any one person to do Do away with the old sixteen hour method that pro duced weariness and indifference till both became chronic and confine your self and your household to eight hours 4ide awake hustling effective bust Bfttt and see what you think of results My word for it you will find that the mental and moral improvement to say- nothingI of better physical habits will more than repay tho effort of the change 0 This is the beat month in the year for overhauling bed clothing and table linen there is more leisure from settled employments Mend and darn carefully such as will justify the time so spent and renew that which is hopelessly worn Dainty school napkins and best tea clothes can be made of remnants of worn damask and even the thinnest and apparently most useless bits should be rolled and put away for the summer sore toes and stone bruises 00 The most prosperous farm woman is she who keepR up what is sometimes galled a personal market that is one in which she directly supplies her cus tomers without having her produce pass through the hands of grocer or dairy man A little clergy and push in the way of advertisements will accomplish this and she will find that her prices are thirty per cent higher The business that pays best is that in which the profits off a middle man are nil the producer selling to the consumer in person Re rjelve that for this year you will make a gyet of customers of some of the best peo pie in your nearest town to whom you willI l send at their homes all your produce Ii they can use For this you will receive eaeb that you may spend where you can get the beet value for in place of supply I fag some grocer at reduced rates and then being obliged to take it out in trade at exorbitant rates All that is Hceawry to accomplish this is to let it be known that you have country produce ef the best for sale you may either send wimples and prices to such as would be desirable customers or place a pointed attractive advertisement in your town paperoGett out ofyour rut farm woman and into the broad highway of progress I The mi ot the world is moving keep up with the procession 0After smoking sacking and white Cbing your hams bury them in hick y ashes till summer then offer them or sale and any uptodate grocer will live you an extra price for ash packed a That was Mrs Henry Clays way treating them and she sold all she oeuld supply to a Boston firm at half as mesh again as other hamsbronght even at the same house 0damages stuffed in skins and then i moped well being burled in hickory b8lthe same way as the hams will keep indeflnately and next September f will sell readily for horse meets a torn newspaper lying in the middle of the roan he is seized with a Conviction that it is on the point of tear- Ing him to pieces and accordingly he falls into a spasm of terror I presume that the icientiflo explanation of this fact is that the prehistoric horse was overely abused by the newspapers of the time and that his descendants have bus inherited a horror of newspapers But like most scientific explanations of familiar mysteries this would not be worth noticing Why should the pre- hIstoric newspapers have insulted the horse Did the cave men lose their noney on horseraces and
