producer ol milk In my opinion many of tho Shorthorns Red Foils and Devona will produce a large quantity of good milk and at the uamo timo raise a steer calf which will lay on flesh rapidly and bo profitable as a beef producer I have handled this class of cattle for many years mostly Shorthorns and have also known many lied Polled and Devon breeders who had animals which pro- Â¬ duced large quantities of butter and at the same time raised good beef steers I do not believe in the thln ileshod and plain cattle which have recently been called by the namo of milking Shorthorns Borthorns havo always been noted for their mil king qualities True many herds have been fed for beef for so many years that the milking quali ties have disappeared somewliat This however has boen done for show pur- Â¬ poses A better steer cannot be raised from such pampered stock thnn from a cow of equally good blood and desirable milking qualities We have two herds of Red Poll cattle in Ohio those oi Mr Hill and James McLain Smith which are noted for the amount of milk they produce and also for their beef charac- Â¬ teristics Many years aso I had a herd of Short horns which carried off the prize for milk and butter in ten days tests There are in my barn today three pure bred Bteers 24 to SO months old The last is from a cow traced to Imported Bios and will weigh 1425 to 1450 Bom pounds The others are also of good weight These steers are from cows which are deep milkers one of them giving milk 11 months after having given birth to her calf She is always in good flesh and she and her three sisters are my dairy cows from which I make butter and sell to city customers I get for this butter the highest retail price By carefully selecting breeding stock from cows possessing good milking qual- Â¬ ities it is easy to produce good stock for dairy and for feeding later From the breeds I have named by carefully se- Â¬ lecting I have arrived at the blocky type of cows which answer my purpose well ensilage but it has never matte a prac tice of giving them all that thoy would eat In order to see what would result by feeding a full supply eight animals six mules and two horses wero fed all tho onsilage they would eat for six weeks Thoy were given a small amount some weeks previous to the test The animals wero in good health from first to last and examined from timo to timo by a voterlnnry Russian Government an order that will keep its plant running for nearly two years The steam and surface railroad corporations and syndicates large telegraph companies colossal corporate concerns in industries in the world has vastly improved tho qual Â¬ ity of its product lowered the price to tho comunity and mado a large fortune for a great many people without Government aid For efficiency permanenoy of business and employment scien Â¬ tific experimentation and benefit to the pdblio it has scarcely any equal in the world and all that has been accomplished not by Tariffs but by the use of largo capital and superior organization It is high time that at least the decent part of the American press awoke to the importance of infusing integrity and fairness into the discussion of publio
