in Breckonridge county When they set their heads to doing a thing and doing it right thoy generally succeed Not long ago they got their backs up over the way in which the roads were being worked in their district The parties having the work in charge put in their time and labor improving an already good road in the Roberlsou neighborhood and they neglected to put the almost impassible hill at Glendeano in any thing liko order The citizens and tax payers grumbled and some of the more hut headed poke of putting dynamite under the road ma chine and blowing it up Superintendent Si Pate heard of the ill feeling and went to GlenJeane to confer with the citizens and Aud out the true state of affairs for himself He found that the people in that hustling little town wore justified in the stand they took and he showed he was with them He made the proposition that if they would assist him he would see that the hill road was put in permanent repair They acquiesced and donated the use their teams and labor for several days Mr Pate then made preparations to metal that portion of the road and now it is beiDg put in iine shape This improvement will result in great good for Glendeane and it shows what reason and enthusiasm can do It also proves that a great deal of the opposition to tho good roads movement is unnecessary and that the people can get what they want if they go after it DESERTED CHILD Proves to Be Heir to a Large Virgina Estate Hnwc5vlllc Child Abandoned by a Desolate flother The following story which will be of interest to some of our readers was taken from tho named Mercer but alio makes no claim to being a member of the Virginia family of Mercers Twelve years ago sho was married to Jeff David sou a son of Dr Davidson aud the young couple moved out to Pueblo Col to live There tho boy was born and there it is said the father deserted the mother and her six weeks old child leaving them penniless By some means they managed to get back to Hawes- ¬ ville but only stayed there a short while ao a womim canto on to Louia ville where sho soon drifted into one of the disreputable houses on Green street pleading in her extenuation that Dr Davidson had refused her a home aud that cither shame or starvation must be chosen since she had absolutely nothing by which to gain a support She was al this timo about nineteen years of age young and exceedingly pretty For a ydar she kept the child with her and then turned it over to Jew Bet whose baby farm was the scene of such notorious cruelty that it was raided by the agents of the Humane Society a few years ago The boy with several other children was given over to the protecting care of ono of the chil Irans homes hero where he has been ever sinco The woman continued in her life of shame here for several years and then she moved to St Louis where she is Bald to have been mairied recently to a member of one of the prominent families there which has disowned the son for the mesalliance The boy would probably have been left in the home here indefinitely but for the recent opening of tho question as to the distribution of Gen Mercers pro- ¬ perty among the heirs His half aunt Mrs Martin Carnes of Mt Carmel 111 knew of the boys being in Louisville and had an interview with the hoy and the sisters of the home She has in her possession all the proof as to his identity and she claims
