Judicial Dis ¬ trict As much has been said and will be said about our action In attempting to have our names as candidates or Circuit Jmlgo and Commonwealths Attornoy taken from under the rooster and placed under tho fusion device in the counties of Breckenridge and Grayson we deem It proper to give the people the reason why this was attempted and why it was abandoned In the counties of Breckonrldge and Grayson the Democrat and Populist parties had agreed on a fusion ticket for county offices and both counties had adopted tho flguro of two hands clasped together as the device of tho fusion tick ¬ et Under this dovlco all the county fu- ¬ sion ticket was placed while the Demo- ¬ cratic nominees for Clerk of the Court of Appeals Circuit Judge Commonwealths Attorney and State Senator were under the rooster It was contended by many that it would be legal for Democrats and Popu- ¬ list in voting to stamp under tho fusion dovlce and also under the rooster and it would bo counted for both tickets This view of the case however was regarded by many others as erroneous and Secre- ¬ tary of State Finley had in a letter to Judge Graham of Leitchfleld given an opinion that such votes would be thrown out as illegal We were satisfied that under this opinion many ballots would be thrown out In these two counties and in order to avoid this and to have all the votes counted that was really cast or the Democratic and usion tickets after counseling with all the fusion can ¬ didates in Breckenridge and Grayson it was decided by all of them that it would greatly simplify the vote and lessen the chances to make mistakes in voting if our names were placed under tho fusion ticket in Breckenridge and Grayson and thereby strengthen both the Democratic and fusion ticket in those counties We believed that the arrangements wore both legal and right in order to get a full voto and a fair count and so petitions were prepared in both counties to have our names placed under the fusion tick- ¬ ets as is directed In section 1 151 of tho Kentucky statutes which In our opinion expressly authorized such actions These petitions however were never filed with the Clerks of the county court in either county or these reasons Wo were advised that in the opinion of many good lawyers It would bo of doubtful legality or a district candidate to run under separate devices in different counties that the district must be con- ¬ sidered as a unite in voting or district officers and the same device must be used In all the counties and we wore advised that the Clerk of tho Brecken ¬ ridge County Court would not recognize our petition if presented to him and would not put our names under the fu- ¬ sion dovice in said county unless com- ¬ pelled to do so by mandamus Under these circumstances in order to avoid delay and legal complication we have decided to remain under the rooster and our petition to go under the usion de-¬ vice will not be presented We have been actuated in this whole matter not specially to benefit ourselves but to sim- ¬ plify the ballot and thereby aid both the Democratic and usion tickets in tho two counties of Grayson and Breckenridge T lands The advocates of this measure say that because of the awkward system of weights and measures now in use each ol the fifteen million Bchool children in the country loses needlessly a whole year in receiving arithmetical instruc- ¬ tion The metric system would thus save fifteen million years of human life in each generation In addition to this business men clerks and men of sci ¬ ence would profit immeasurably by the greater facility of calculation in math- ¬ ematical operations It has been estimated by a high authority that six hundred thousand lives were lost because of the Civil War and that tho slain would have lived on an average twenty years longer under natural conditions the loss of life ex ¬ pressed in years would therefore be twelve million Hence it is reasoned that the 15327210 school children of America are losing more of life in each generation than was sacrificed in the most sanguinary war history records and all because of tho prejudice against an innovation that would be a blessing to all who have occasion to use it Our measures of money are in strict accordance with the principles of this system and all who compare the United States currency with the sterling money table appreciate its inherent advantages Few persons realized that the first Vice President and second President of the nation originated a similar arrangement before the present metric
